This week we talk about Jeep's plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and share our driving impressions, as well as what it is like to go off-road on pure electric power. We also discuss the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall of the 2017 - 2019 Chevrolet Bolt due to the potential of a battery fire, and what you need to know if you own one. Other topics include: whether a Nissan Leaf is a good first car for a teen driver; why you need to be sure your tires aren't inside out when you have them mounted by a professional; if engine braking can damage a vehicle's transmission; and we choose our favorite SUVs that could become classics in the future. ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts? Some doubted that an electrified Jeep Wrangler could be anything more than a publicity stunt, but Jeep engines have proved them wrong. We just got the chance to tackle some of Texas's most rugged terrain in the all-new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and we can attest to the fact that it is a capable Jeep every sense of that fabled word. “Go anywhere” really means go anywhere in the 2021 Wrangler 4xe. We have an exclusive interview with one of Jeep's prime movers-and-shakers on the 4xe, Dan Fry. He's vehicle integration manager on the project, and host Jack Nerad got a chance to have an in-depth conversation with him about the vehicle at a recent test event outside Austin, Texas. The 2021 Genesis GV80 is a high-value luxury SUV that can compete head-to-head with the European heavyweights. In the road test segment of this edition of America on the Road co-host Chris Teague will tell about his experiences in the 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV, a vehicle that recently gained some fame as the model Tiger Woods recently crashed in Southern California. Teague was on the other side of the country, in Maine, for his test drive of the handsome new model. The 2021 Mazda Miata is just as alluring as it ever was, as our 400-mile road test proved. Also in the road test segment, Jack Nerad will discuss his recent 400-mile round trip in the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Nerad was on hand for the launch of the Miata as Editor of Motor Trend in 1989, and he's been reporting on the car ever since. In his most recent adventure with the vehicle, he tests it on some of California's most challenging highways. Leading the car news this week is the report of strong auto sales in April. The industry is rebounding quickly from the pounding it took during the worst of the COVID-19 crisis. But a dark cloud is looming over sales. We'll tell you what that is. And about what some carmakers plan to do about it. See what we said about the conventional Jeep Wrangler
