This week on Songwriter Soup, the trio talks to Driver about what it was like to grow up in the thick of the Nashville songwriter scene, leaving it to follow his love of heavy metal, how that love somehow led him to Eric Church, and the breadcrumb trail that brought him back home. Global Partners, Brian and Jody Williams, recently transitioned back to the States after serving in Cambodia for 13 years. While in Cambodia, the Williams' partnered with locals to open an international preschool which, as you'll hear, God has used in incredible ways to advance His Kingdom. Even though they no longer live in Cambodia full-time, Brian and Jody are still quite active in the ministry that's taking place there, and they even have a vision for how they can extend that ministry to other parts of the world.
For Rita Sodi, cooking isn't so much an art or a science, but rather an intuitive way for her to channel her Tuscan roots and provide a profound sense of home. Following a 15-year career in the world of fashion as a self-described “denim guru” for Calvin Klein Jeans, Sodi transitioned into the realm of restaurants in 2008, when she moved to New York City from Bagno a Ripoli, Italy, and opened the West Village establishment I Sodi. Soon after, Sodi serendipitously met her life and work partner, Jody Williams—the chef-owner of the French bistro Buvette—and the two went on to found the restaurant group Officina 1397. Now, in addition to I Sodi and Buvette, they also operate Via Carota, The Commerce Inn, and Bar Pisellino. Across all of Sodi's undertakings, her motive is clear: to create dishes she loves with great care and rigor, and, at least in the cases of I Sodi and Via Carota, to share an abiding passion for Tuscan cooking. On the episode, Sodi discusses learning to cook from her mother, her atypical journey from fashion to food, and some of the stringent rules she follows in the kitchen and in life.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Rita Sodi[25:50] Tuscany[4:50] West Village[5:58] I Sodi[6:47] Calvin Klein Jeans[8:31] Jody Williams[8:31] Via Carota[8:31] Officina 1397[8:31] Bar Pisellino[8:31] The Commerce Inn[8:31] Buvette[20:29] Pete Wells[23:22] “An Ode to I Sodi”[23:22] “The 100 Best Restaurants in New York City 2024”[23:22] “When I Want to Be Alone, I Eat Dinner at the Bar at I Sodi”[25:50] Bagno a Ripoli[29:35] “The Laws of Tuscan Eating at I Sodi in the West Village”[48:26] Emilia-Romagna[53:53] Jeff Gordinier

Calvary Preschool has been serving countless families in our community for 50 years! This is such a huge milestone, and while CPS has already begun celebrating, we thought that there would be such value in publicly celebrating God's faithfulness to this important ministry. So today, Calvary Preschool's current Director, Susan Hixon, and one of the former Directors, Jody Williams – who is also one of Calvary's Global Partners – are here to welcome us in to the celebration. While they will unpack some of the history and purpose of the preschool, they will, more importantly, share stories of how God has worked mightily in using CPS to extend the gospel within our local community.

Mark talks too long time friend and midwest blues guitar legend Billy Flynn. Billy Flynn was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin.[1][3] In 1970, a local blues club opened and Flynn was inspired by the music provided there by Luther Allison, Johnny Littlejohn and Mighty Joe Young. Flynn was fortunate to be spotted playing outside the venue by Jimmy Dawkins, who arranged for Flynn to play with him on stage.[4] Flynn joined Dawkins's backing band in 1975, and he played and toured with them until the end of the decade.Flynn also worked locally during this period and played alongside Sunnyland Slim. In the early part of the 1980s, Flynn was a member of the touring ensemble Jim Liban and the Futuramics.[4] In the late 1980s, he joined the Legendary Blues Band. He also played with Mississippi Heat. In addition to his own work and works mentioned later, he has worked and recorded with Bryan Lee, Little Smokey Smothers, Mark Hummel, Willie Kent, Snooky Pryor, Big Bill Morganfield, John Brim, Jody Williams, Little Arthur Duncan, Deitra Farr, and Billy Boy Arnold. Tonight's special guest is Jody Williams from Las Vegas, a survivor of child abuse, rape, domestic violence, and sex trafficking. Jody's a returning NAASCA family member. She has been in recovery from drug addiction and the sex industry as well as mental illness since 1985. In 1987, Jody founded Sex Workers Anonymous - the first program of it's kind to help men and women across this country to exit the sex industry and/or find recovery after having left it. The hotline answered hundreds of thousands of calls over the years. What started out as a small meeting in a coffee shop soon exploded, and there were eventually meetings across the USA, as well as in five other countries now. Spending five years interviewing 1,000's of recovering prostitutes and sex workers, Jody published the Recovery Guide. This is her group's version of what is the Big Book in Alcoholics Anonymous. For decades Jody has been successfully fighting back the legal brothels from expanding outside of their small county into both California and Nevada. But her activism has sometimes been met with violent retaliation. In 2014, Jody came out with an e-book for parents on "What to do if you suspect your child is involved in prostitution" based on years of getting the same phone call question over and over again.

She put together the first ever press conference about trafficking as it exists within the legal brothels of Nevada in 2008 where she was met with violent retaliation. Many courts are using this program today as part of their probation and alternative sentencing programs, while there are local meeting in many cities and phone meetings for those who wish to remain truly "anonymous" or for those who can't travel. The SWA hotline is the only one answered by a survivor that's not connected with law enforcement. Jody has just come out with an e-book for parents on "What to do if you suspect your child is involved in prostitution" based on years of getting the same call over and over again.
