An Horse: Live at The Zoo, Fortitude Valley, 28 February 2020 An Horse are a duo formed by singer/guitarist Kate Cooper and drummer/backing vocalist Damon Cox. They met while working in Brisbane record store Skinny's and started playing music together in the shop after work. Their debut EP, "Not Really Scared" was released in 2008. When Canadian duo Tegan and Sara played an instore performance at Skinny's, Cooper slipped them a copy of the EP and shortly after An Horse were invited to join the Canadians on an American tour. An Horse's big American break quickly snowballed, with subsequent tours supporting Death Cab for Cutie, The New Pornographers and Jessica Lea Mayfield. They were signed to New York label Mom + Pop Records, and debut album "Rearrange Beds" was released in 2009. An Horse made waves back home when they became one of the few Australian bands to ever play live on The Late Show with David Letterman. Second album "Walls" followed in 2011 and then - after relentless touring - Cooper and Cox took a long break to concentrate on other projects. Cox drummed for Kevin Devine, Tancred and Brand New while Cooper recorded a solo album and pursued a career in commercial music production. Eventually, An Horse came back together to record a third album, "Modern Air", which was released in 2019, and the following year they came home to tour Australia. Jessica Lea Mayfield is an alt-rock/country singer-songwriter from Kent, Ohio (with musical roots in Nashville) who resides in an RV in Los Angeles where she is recording and self-producing her next album - which is a pretty familiar setting for her. Jessica grew up on a tour bus (with a family full of musicians) and spent her youth writing music and homeschooling herself. She has collaborated and toured with big names and is a headliner, as well. In part one of this episode, LG and Jessica chat about their mutual, self-described “white trash” upbringing, their shared passion for DIY recording, owning their down-to-earth identities, and more. Episode 6: A few years back, I took an unplanned solo bike tour through Washington, Oregon and most of California. The trip crossed rivers - like the Columbia, the Rogue and the Klamath, visited breweries - seventeen of them to be exact - and ended abruptly in the worst campsite on earth. This episode provides a glimpse into the quirky calamity of solo cycling and the understated joy of moments in between. Music by Seeking Madras, Blue Dot Sessions, Scott Gratton, AA Aalto, Podington Bear, me, and a live recording of a Jessica Lea Mayfield show that I caught in San Francisco. By far, this is our happiest, bounciest and most upbeat collection of music in one episode. That's because we're talking about "the pink cloud" in addiction recovery—the temporary sense of euphoria, hope and well-being that occurs during very early sobriety. Artists this time around include Phantom Planet, Gotye, Phoenix, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Florence + The Machine and Jessica Lea Mayfield. Dan Auerbach, along with drummer Patrick Carney, started The Black Keys in 2001 as a writing and recording project, releasing their first album in 2002. Dan also began recording and producing other artists along the way, initially with musicians like Jessica Lea Mayfield, Patrick Sweany, and others. Big changes arrived for The Black Keys in 2010, when the album Brothers and the single "Tighten Up" sold millions of copies and garnered three Grammy Awards. Dan moved to Nashville around then and opened up his Easy Eye Sound studio, a place filled with the best vintage and new recording equipment and is also home to many fun instruments. Sessions for The Pretenders, Dr. John, Shannon & The Clams, Lana Del Rey, and many more have gone on here, so I dropped in to hang with Dan, and his engineer Allen Parker, in June of 2018 to learn more about his career and thoughts on producing records. Check out the new Black Keys album, Let's Rock, and look for a Tape Op interview with Patrick Carney of the band soon. Enjoy! Sponsored by Soundtoys www.soundtoys.com

In this episode, a first for My Favourite Elliott Smith Song, we hear from two guests: the musicians Jessica Lea Mayfield and Seth Avett. Both artists made their names separately, Jessica as a singer-songwriter and Seth as part of the band the Avett Brothers, but they joined forces in 2015 to release the album Jessica Lea Mayfield and Seth Avett Sing Elliott Smith. It was so enjoyable speaking to them both. They have a great chemistry and are both huge fans of Elliott's work. In the interview we cover their individual favourite song picks, as well as the album they worked on and a pet named after Elliott. Hope you enjoy it. Jessica Lea Mayfield released her fourth album, "Sorry Is Gone," last fall. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter continues to push her music toward an alternative rock sound while maintaining the country influences of her early work. It's also a deeply personal record for Mayfield, who addresses her experience as a domestic violence survivor on several of the album's tracks. Mayfield, who previously visited CPR's OpenAir in 2014, returned to the CPR Performance Studio to play three stripped-down versions of songs from "Sorry Is Gone." She also spoke with Bruce Trujillo about viewing her lyrics as a conversation with herself, her decision to be candid about her experience with domestic violence and how her music has gotten heavier in recent years.
Last year, Jessica Lea Mayfield opened up about her experiences with domestic violence. The conversation she started on Instagram ultimately culminated in "Sorry Is Gone," a collection of deeply personal, raw songs about her time in an abusive marriage and her journey out of it.
