On this week's program, host Phil Tower (* sitting in for Allison Donahue) speaks with Andy McIntyre, chief operating officer at John Ball Zoo. Andy gave us an overview of the recently approved 10-year master plan for John Ball Zoo. The plan which was passed in early December after a 16 to 3 vote before the Kent County Commission, includes additional language that protects green space and trees. Andy discussed some of the particular elements of the recently approved 10-year master plan, including expanding the Africa exhibit at the zoo to include a giraffe habitat, reviving a sea lion habitat, and adding a large South American forest habitat featuring native animals, free-flying birds and a waterfall that reaches 30 feet. He also discussed the care and maintenance of the zoo and its animals during the winter season, the upcoming third year of the Grand Rapids Lantern Festival, and the benefits of John Ball Zoo memberships for individuals and families. You know what they say: you send Chris and Ari an email, you end up on the podcast. We're super happy to welcome Jeremiah Shon from John Ball Zoo to the show! Jeremiah is a recent NEI workshop attendee who reached out to share some cool training stuff that he and his team have been doing with their birds recently, so we brought him on the show to talk about how they put together their "group training program," the process of getting buy-in from people at all levels, the importance of seeing ourselves as scientists, and the value of recognizing when an idea you created doesn't belong to you anymore. Shout outs in this episode: Amy Fennell, Erin Moloney, Katelyn Ferringer, and Scott Trauger. Ya'll rock! If you have a shout-out you'd like us to share, a question or a topic you'd like us to discuss, or a suggestion for a guest we should have on the show, let us know at podcast@naturalencounters.com! --------------------------------- This episode is brought to you by Magic Mind! It's a hodge podge this week, with segments from all over Michigan as we go Behind the Mitten. We've got a contest to win, a hippo to visit, a beer to drink, and a great interview with a verifiable radio legend, who shares some important travel tips for those of us who are differently abled. We start off with our friends from the West Michigan Tourist Association, who are currently holding their annual summer photo contest. Paige Bodine and Dan Sippel give us all the details on this fun way to share your vision of Michigan. The contest is accepting photos until July 28, and then the public will have a chance to vote on their favorites. Prizes include a weekend on Mackinac Island, and you can enter your photo at: https://www.wmta.org/A few weeks ago we visited the new pygmy hippo enclosure at John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, where 650-pound Jahari resides in a water paradise. Located just a few blocks from the zoo on the West Side of Grand Rapids is Kusterer Brauhaus, a Bavarian-style beer hall that features both traditional German-style ales and lagers, and a few locally inspired ones too. For the month of July, their Feelgood Tap is pouring their Modern Weissbier and donating part of the proceeds from every pint to John Ball Zoo. Plan a visit to Kusterer at https://grbrauhaus.com/ Behind the Mitten's executive producer, Phil Tower is usually on the other side of the microphone, but we were lucky enough to have him join us for two segments. There is a movement afoot to force gun owners to insure each firearm they own. We bring our friend and insurance expert, Rick Lindsey from XINSURANCE on to talk about that and more. Who were the Green Mountain Boys and what historical impact did they have upon the United States of America? The Vermont government recently spit on their graves. Do you have a Hippo Gun? Do you need one? Well, before you answer, consider what just happened in Michigan. We discussed that during our Duracoat Finished Firearms segment. Also, Memorial Day is fast approaching, that means saving on gun parts from Brownells. Thanks for being a part of SOTG! We hope you find value in the message we share. The Green Mountain Boys began in 1770 at present-day Bennington, Vermont, as an unauthorized militia organized to defend the property rights of local residents who had received land grants from New Hampshire. New York, which then claimed present-day Vermont, disputed New Hampshire's right to grant land west of the Green Mountains. The Green Mountain Boys stopped sheriffs from enforcing New York laws and terrorized settlers who had New York grants, burning buildings, stealing cattle, and administering occasional floggings with birch rods. The Green Mountain Boys immediately joined the Revolution, and on May 10, 1775, fewer than a hundred of them, under the joint command of Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga. Eventually they became part of the Continental Army and served in the abortive offensive against Canada. (Click Here for Full Article) From apnews.com/article: Vermont on Monday made it a crime to own or operate paramilitary training camps in the state after Republican Gov. Phil Scott signed legislation introduced in response to a firearms training facility built without permits that neighbors called a menace. Violators face up to five years in prison or a fine up to $50,000 or both, according to the law. It prohibits a person from teaching, training, or demonstrating to anyone else the use, application, or making of a firearm, explosive, or incendiary device capable of causing injury or death that will be used in or in furtherance of a civil disorder. It also bans a person from assembling with others for such training, instruction or practice. (Click Here for Full Article)
