On this episode of Spellbreakers, Matt Trump dives into the often-overlooked capture of Fort Ticonderoga, America's first successful offensive strike in the Revolutionary War, marking its 250th anniversary. He explores the critical role of Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys and the surprising heroism of Benedict Arnold before his infamous betrayal. We learn how the cannons seized were hauled by Henry Knox across wintery terrain to Boston, laying groundwork for victory. Matt weaves this colonial milestone into broader reflections on history, identity, and the soul of a nation, drawing parallels between eras of American renewal and current cultural crises. From Ticonderoga pencils to AI anxieties and simulation theory, this episode is a vibrant mix of historical deep dive, modern commentary, and patriotic introspection.

Champ the Lake Champlain MonsterThis week we dive into the legend of Champ, the Lake Champlain Monster, exploring over 300 reported sightings dating back to 1609 when Samuel de Champlain claimed to witness a 20-foot serpent-like creature. We chronicle key evidence including Sandra Mansi's famous 1977 photograph, sonar readings capturing unusual shapes, and alleged echolocation recordings from cryptozoologist Katy Elizabeth.Throughout the episode, we discuss theories about whether Champ could be a prehistoric survivor like a plesiosaur or tanystropheus, citing Lake Champlain's substantial depth of 400 feet as a potential habitat. We also look at alternative explanations for the Lake Champlain cryptid, including large sturgeon (which can reach 27 feet), groups of otters swimming in formation creating a serpentine illusion, or partially submerged logs moved by underwater currents called seiches.Patreon: Support Believing the Bizarre and get tons of extra content by joining our Patreon. For updates, news, and extra content, follow Believing the Bizarre on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterDiscordShop Merch: You can rep Believing the Bizarre and buy some unique merchWant to send BTB something? For my 2025 kickoff of Insider Interviews marketing luminaries Lou Paskalis and David Sable joined me for one of the most candid conversations on the media and ad world for an incredibly candid conversation on the media and ad world that cuts through what David famously coined as "digibabble" years ago. We moved from their personal passions (don't get David started on The Doors!) to how advertising evolved in the tech era... to its future, jam packed with opinions based on their decades of award-winning experience. (Lou, who previously ran global marketing at a couple of small brands you may have heard of, like Bank of America, American Express, and where I first met him, E.J. Gallo, is now the strategic mind behind news assessor Ad Fontes Media, The street cred of David - a top voice on LinkedIn, thanks in part to his terrific blog, "Imagine," stems from being former global CEO/Chairman of Y&R (now VMLY&R) and board member for a ton of big companies like American Eagle and Ethan Allen. He is now Vice-Chairman at the forward-thinking mid-size holdco, Stagwell, where Lou is also an advisor, I discovered!) What informs a lot of the conversation is David's explanation of how Stagwell flipped the traditional agency model on its head: Instead of buying up creative agencies, founder Mark Penn premise to build around tech."... We began by buying tech, aggregating tech and creating a tech platform. Then we went out and wrote in the creative pieces of business." But as David emphasized, "Tech leads the way for everything. But our model, which is the model that's working the best, is that tech is an enabler: Our job is to tell stories and to tell them well." Stories - and art itself, even using the most sophisticated tech and AI - is only a result of the information fed to it. David shares a beautiful analogy about what a Monet envisioned using different brushstrokes on, say, Water Lillies. We have to inform our models to consider "impressionism," just as we have to provide data for use. He says, "Data is a picture of what happened before. That's it. Now, I can interpret it, I can use it, I can I can create algorithms or models, but at the end of the day, data is a picture of what was. It can predict, and AI is going to be better at that, but that's all it is. So it's only as good as the data that it has." And don't get him started on OMNICHANNEL as a buzzword, either. The through line of this episode is to appeal to and follow the consumer. Not jam tech terms or "digibabble" down their throats. Unsurprisingly, Lou agrees, comparing ineffective presentations to Charlie Brown hearing his teacher: "Wah wah. Wah wah. Digital." His point when pitching the CFO could also apply to the consumer: "If you don't contextualize everything into the growth agenda, you might as well not go to the meetings. They don't care what we do, they care how what we do achieves growth." Be human, even in an AI world. That applies to retail, to advertising and, as we learn, the news media. The Future of News Perhaps most compelling was our discussion about the critical importance of news. Insider Interviews followers know this is a clarion call for Lou, which he focused on in his first appearance here last year. Now, backed by Stagwell's staggering study of 50,000 people, Lou shared a startling insight: "The ROI, or return on advertising -- ROAS, on news is higher than any other content vertical you can buy." Marketers are missing out on if they are "news-averse," based on some misguided perceptions about "brand suitability." "11% are self-identified as news junkies who only read or watch the news when they're consuming media. That's 11% more business for any marketer in America in 2025 who will achieve the growth agenda and win by reaching these very influential people." (To learn more, all Insider Interviews fans who are publishers are invited to apply to attend Stagwell's Future of News next meeting at 1WTC on January 2...

Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys made Vermont possible. Formed by Connecticut natives Allen (Litchfield) and Seth Warner (Roxbury), the group fought to retain land grant rights in the 1700s in the wilderness between New Hampshire and New York. Their efforts paved the way for Vermont to become a separate state. The story is told by historian and author Gene Procknow.

Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
This is a recording of our "Capital markets structures for originators (sidecars for MGA's)" live webinar that was held on November 21st 2024 and featured insurance-linked security (ILS) and reinsurance industry experts that joined us to discuss the developing trend for risk originators using ILS structures to source capital markets risk and partner capacity. The use of alternative sources of risk and reinsurance capital by the originators of insurance risk, such as managing general agents (MGAs), is a notable trend and one we anticipate expanding over time. There have been numerous attempts to achieve this in the past, effectively bringing the capacity of ILS funds and institutional investors closer to the sources of risk. Some of these have faced challenges, in terms of controlling attritional losses to find the right balance between risk and return. But now, the market has started to make innovative use of ILS structures such as sidecars, to provide aligned mechanisms through which investors can participate in the underwriting performance of MGAs, while those MGAs can benefit from access to an efficient, alternative capital source. This Artemis Live webinar was moderated by Steve Evans and featured participants: Scott Cobon, Managing Director of Insurance Management Services at Artex Capital Solutions; Raoul Lobo, Vice President at Stone Point Capital; Brad Adderley, Managing Director and the Bermuda Managing Partner at Appleby; and Ethan Allen, Executive Vice President, Chief Risk Officer at MS Transverse Insurance Group. Speakers explored what potential sponsors of these structures need to be aware of and preparing for, as well as the opportunity for investors to partner with risk originators using sophisticated ILS and capital market structures. Listen to the full podcast episode to gain insights from industry experts and hear discussion on this developing area of the insurance-linked securities (ILS) and reinsurance capital market.

Ethan Allen is lionized as the founding father of Vermont. But filmmaker Jay Craven has reimagined the story of the Revolutionary War figure and leader of the Green Mountain Boys to tell a fuller story of patriotism laced with greed and ambition. In Craven's latest epic film, “Lost Nation,” Ethan Allen meets Lucy Terry Prince, a formerly enslaved woman in Guilford who scholars believe was the nation's first African American poet. The improbable duo have a shared conviction to protect their land and people. Their fictionalized connection lies at the heart of Craven's saga.“Lost Nation” opens with a quote from Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker, who wrote, “All history is current.”“One of the questions we pose in the film is whether the promise of the American Revolution would be fulfilled,” said Craven. “There was a belief and a hope that slavery would be abolished as a result of the American Revolution. Of course, that did not happen. And some of the racial tensions of that time, unfortunately, have persisted … And today we're facing the problem of even banning African American history.”“Maybe this film itself would be banned, frankly, because it tells some African American history about struggle,” he mused.Jay Craven is one of Vermont's cultural visionaries. He is a founder of Catamount Arts, co-founder of Circus Smirkus, and co-founder of Kingdom County Productions, which he runs with his wife, documentary filmmaker Bess O'Brien. Craven has directed 10 films, including “Where the Rivers Flow North” (1993), “Disappearances” (2006) and “Northern Borders” (2013). Craven is also artistic director of the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival and a former professor of film studies at Marlboro College. Craven attended Boston University, where he was student body president and led protests against the Vietnam War. He formed a lifelong friendship with radical historian Howard Zinn and traveled with a student peace delegation to North Vietnam.Filmmaking is an extension of Craven's lifelong social justice mission. Some 45 students from 10 colleges were involved in making “Lost Nation,” part of his commitment to empowering a new generation of filmmakers through Semester Cinema.Making films “gave me voice, it gave me agency and also instilled in me a certain activism that became a guiding force when I moved to Vermont in wanting to work within the arts to connect communities and to work with this idea of community and culture,” Craven said. “Making movies based on stories from where I lived, as an alternative to the Hollywood narrative, was part of that activism.”
A new film by filmmaker Jay Craven imagines what would happen if the paths of two historical figures crossed – the Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen, and the poet Lucy Terry Prince.

There is a movement afoot to force gun owners to insure each firearm they own. We bring our friend and insurance expert, Rick Lindsey from XINSURANCE on to talk about that and more. Who were the Green Mountain Boys and what historical impact did they have upon the United States of America? The Vermont government recently spit on their graves. Do you have a Hippo Gun? Do you need one? Well, before you answer, consider what just happened in Michigan. We discussed that during our Duracoat Finished Firearms segment. Also, Memorial Day is fast approaching, that means saving on gun parts from Brownells. Thanks for being a part of SOTG! We hope you find value in the message we share. The Green Mountain Boys began in 1770 at present-day Bennington, Vermont, as an unauthorized militia organized to defend the property rights of local residents who had received land grants from New Hampshire. New York, which then claimed present-day Vermont, disputed New Hampshire's right to grant land west of the Green Mountains. The Green Mountain Boys stopped sheriffs from enforcing New York laws and terrorized settlers who had New York grants, burning buildings, stealing cattle, and administering occasional floggings with birch rods. The Green Mountain Boys immediately joined the Revolution, and on May 10, 1775, fewer than a hundred of them, under the joint command of Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga. Eventually they became part of the Continental Army and served in the abortive offensive against Canada. (Click Here for Full Article) From apnews.com/article: Vermont on Monday made it a crime to own or operate paramilitary training camps in the state after Republican Gov. Phil Scott signed legislation introduced in response to a firearms training facility built without permits that neighbors called a menace. Violators face up to five years in prison or a fine up to $50,000 or both, according to the law. It prohibits a person from teaching, training, or demonstrating to anyone else the use, application, or making of a firearm, explosive, or incendiary device capable of causing injury or death that will be used in or in furtherance of a civil disorder. It also bans a person from assembling with others for such training, instruction or practice. (Click Here for Full Article)
