Episode 165In today's guest episode it is a very welcome return to the podcast for Darren Freebury-Jones. Darren appeared previously to discuss his book ‘Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers' and I asked him back on this occasion because his earlier book ‘Shakespeare's Tutor: The Influence of Thomas Kyd' is now published in a paperback edition by Manchester University Press, making it a much more accessible resource for any enthusiast of early modern theatre. In our conversation about the book Darren mentions a few points, like the detail of verse structure and characters like Robert Greene and Thomas Nashe that we discussed in more detail in our earlier encounter. If you would like to listen to that again it is still out there on the podcast feed as episode 126, that's season six episode thirteen.Dr Darren Freebury-Jones is author of the monographs: Reading Robert Greene: Recovering Shakespeare's Rival, Shakespeare's Tutor: The Influence of Thomas Kyd, and Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers. He is also Associate Editor for the first critical edition of The Collected Works of Thomas Kyd since 1901. He has investigated the boundaries of John Marston's dramatic corpus as part of the Oxford Marston project and is General Editor for The Collected Plays of Robert Greene, also published by Edinburgh University Press. His findings on the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries have been discussed in national newspapers such as The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Observer, and The Independent as well as BBC Radio. His debut poetry collection, Rambling, was published by Broken Sleep Books in 2024. In 2023 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship.Amazon UK link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shakespeares-Tutor-Influence-Thomas-Kyd/dp/1526182610/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0Amazon US Link: https://www.amazon.com/Shakespeares-tutor-influence-Thomas-Kyd/dp/1526182610/ref=sr_1_1?Manchester Universty Press link: https://manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526182616/Support the podcast at:www.thehistoryofeuropeantheatre.comwww.patreon.com/thoetpwww.ko-fi.com/thoetp Hosted on Acast.

The Curtain Theatre was built in 1577 in a section of London called Shoreditch. Constructed only about 200 yards, or 600 feet, away from The Theater, which is the building James and Richard Burbage built as the first purpose built theater in London. For context, this distance about half a city block in Manhattan, and little less than 1 city block in Chicago. In 1585, the Burbages took advantage of this close proximity and struck a deal with the owner of The Curtain to use it as a second performance venue. From 1597-1599, The Curtain was home to the Lord Chamberlain's Men and saw the staging of some of Shakespeare's most famous plays including Romeo and Juliet, and Henry IV Part 1 and 2. The Curtain also staged contemporary plays by John Marston and even one production of Ben Jonson's Every Man in His Humour in 1598, which is a significant production for Shakespeare history, since William Shakespeare was listed as a member of the cast, making The Curtain theater a place we know Shakespeare would have performed himself. There are no records of the Curtain after 1627, so historians are unclear what happened to cause the theater space to be closed down, but a recent development of a square in Shoreditch is bringing The Curtain back to life by having uncovered remains of The Curtain theater that have not only been preserved, but are being showcased as the new Museum of Shakespeare in London, that will allow patrons to literally stand where Shakespeare once stood. Here today to share with us the details behind the dig, and how you can visit the Museum of Shakespeare, is our guest, and lead archaeologist for the excavation with the Museum of London Archaeology, Heather Knight. What does it mean to be called an “upstart crow”? In 1592, a pamphlet titled Greene's groats-worth of witte described William Shakespeare, in the first allusion to him as a playwright, with this phrase, calling him “an upstart crow, beautified with our feathers.” This phrase sparked centuries of speculation. As Darren Freebury-Jones explores in his book, Shakespeare's borrowed feathers: How early modern playwrights shaped the world's greatest writer, Shakespeare's so-called borrowing was neither unusual for the time nor a weakness—it was ultimately a testament to his genius. Exploring how Shakespeare navigated a competitive theatrical scene in early modern England, Freebury-Jones reveals the ways in which Shakespeare reshaped the works of contemporaries like John Lyly, Thomas Kyd, and Christopher Marlowe into something distinctly his own. By combining traditional literary analysis with cutting-edge digital tools, he uncovers echoes of Lyly's witty comedies and gender-bending heroines, Kyd's tragic revenge dramas, and Marlowe's powerful verse in Shakespeare's early plays. This episode sheds light on Shakespeare's role as a responsive and innovative playwright deeply embedded in the early modern theatrical community. Listen in to learn more about the influences on the “upstart crow” as he created a canon of timeless works. Dr Darren Freebury-Jones is author of the monographs: Reading Robert Greene: Recovering Shakespeare's Rival (Routledge), Shakespeare's Tutor: The Influence of Thomas Kyd (Manchester University Press), and Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers (Manchester University Press). He is Associate Editor for the first critical edition of The Collected Works of Thomas Kyd since 1901 (Boydell and Brewer). He has also investigated the boundaries of John Marston's dramatic corpus as part of the Oxford Marston project and is General Editor for The Collected Plays of Robert Greene (Edinburgh University Press). Komplitnya dengerin sampe abisss! This week it's another chat with Dr Darren Freebury-Jones about... a lot of playwrights. This chat most stays within the Elizabethan world of dramatists, inspired by Dr Jones book Sxxxxxxxxx's Borrowed Feathers, which will be available in October 2024. So there's a lot about Marlowe, Lyly, Kyd, Greene and Peele, and then we ran out of time. Shakespeare's borrowed feathers offers a fresh look at William Shakespeare and the community of playwrights that shaped his work. In today's episode, we are joined by Shakespeare scholar, Darren Freebury-Jones, to discuss his soon-to-be-released book, Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers, which explores how Shakespeare was influenced by his fellow contemporary dramatists like John Lyly, Ben Johnson, and Christopher Marlowe, and how he also influenced their work. We'll discuss Darren's research process and the methods he used to analyze the works of Shakespeare and Shakespeare's contemporaries. We will also learn from Darren what this research reveals about the playwrighting and theatrical community of early modern London, and what readers and theatre-makers can learn from having a broader knowledge of early modern drama beyond Shakespeare. Rockstar has announced that Red Dead Redemption and its zombie-themed Undead Nightmare expansion will be available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch from August 17. The game is being ported by Double Eleven Studios and will also support PlayStation 5 backward compatibility. This is a "conversion" rather than a remaster or remake, and it includes additional language options. The price will be $49.99 on the Nintendo Switch eShop and PlayStation Store, with physical copies coming on October 13. There's no mention of PC or Xbox versions, disappointing PC players. The game follows John Marston's journey to hunt down the remaining members of the Van der Linde Gang in the American west and Mexico, and the Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions include the Undead Nightmare expansion with a zombie theme. In another announcement, Street Fighter 6 will have a crossover with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). TMNT-themed gear, emotes, titles, stamps, and costumes will be added to the game on August 8. The collaboration was revealed at EVO 2023 and includes a TMNT-themed storefront, character costumes, turtle-like emotes, and other in-game items. While not full DLC characters, this partnership offers a blend of the two franchises and coincides with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in theaters and the upcoming arrival of the original 1987 TMNT series on Nickelodeon. #gaming #TMNT #reddeadredemption

Red Dead Redemption 2: The story is set in 1899 and follows the exploits of outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang, in a fictionalized representation of the Western, Midwestern, and Southern United States. Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West whilst attempting to survive against government forces, rival gangs, and other adversaries. The game's epilogue follows fellow gang member John Marston, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption. Becky Yearling and Tom Harrison discuss early modern satire, a popular genre for the stage and page which achieved its greatest notoriety in the 1590s, when the Bishops' Ban resulted in the censoring and burning of satirical texts. Becky and Tom look in particular at the works of John Marston and Ben Jonson, and discuss how these two writers exploited and innovated this messy and combative literary form.

It's a miracle we got this epsidoe out... but we did it. And we did it because we love bloviating about games despite our limited time to play them. I guess that's what makes the games on today's show so important, though - we made time for them. Isn't that the highest praise of all? Our most limited resource, time, was dispensed like currency on the likes of Mario, John Marston, Jack Shepherd and so many more these past ten years. We spend this episode both reminicsing and listing our favorite games of the decade all before sending you off into the new year with our merriest of holiday wishes. So, with that we leave you with the remainder of 2019. We hope you remember the past decade as fondly as we do (as far as video games go). Catch you on the other side.
