[Short form interview with immersive audio]2025 marks the 55th anniversary of the Samaritans' presence in Ireland. Lucy's grandmother, Judy, dedicated 30 years as a volunteer with the organisation, offering support through their phone line. Although Lucy has always been curious about her grandmother's experiences on those calls, Samaritans volunteers are bound by a pledge of confidentiality regarding their callers. However, there was one call Judy could share with Lucy—and the reason why will soon become clear.Produced and narrated by Lucy Nuzum.Edited by John Roche.Cover artwork by Ed Taylor.Music: Epidemic Sound.-Comments and feedback very welcome!Email: yarnstorypodcast (at) gmail.com.Insta: @YarnStoryPod-Struggling to cope and need someone to talk to? It was a pleasure to welcome back John Roche (Guitar & Bass) & Shane "Red" Corcoran (Vocals) of brutal Death Metal band Crimson Butchery, to the show. Flying the flag for Death Metal, the Kilkenny duo have released their sophomore album 'Violence by Design' independently on November 1st. This album, like much of Crimson Butchery's work, has a masterful blend of technical riffs and drums and brutal mayhem of old-school 80s and early 90s death metal, with Red giving a master class in true guttural vocal styles. Mixed and Mastered by Floor van Kuijk once again, with programmed drums instead of a drummer, Crimson Butchery have once again released an all killer no filler lesson in brutality. Red & John do a track by track run through of the album with me and there's plenty of insights into the inspiration behind the lyrics and music. I hope you enjoy the chat and of course 'SUBSCRIBE' to the channel. What are the contributing factors and are there ways we mitigate them? To learn the facts about dam failures, we talk with John Roche, who is Chief of the Dam Safety Permits Division of the Maryland Department of the Environment. John's work on dams includes emergency preparedness and response, public safety strategy, policy development, hydrology and hydraulics, and natural resources management. Adoption is a thread that has been woven all throughout Debbie & John Roche's story. As they prayed for a family, God answered by taking them on a journey not once, but three times, to adopt from China. That journey was not always smooth sailing, but God continued to impress upon their hearts a burden to care for orphans, and they continued to seek His leading. Today, Debbie and John share just part of their story, and give us a glimpse into the ways that God continued to show up and answer their prayers in ways they could have never imagined!

There has been a lot of progress in relation to equal rights and protections for members of the LGBTQ+ in Ireland. However, despite decriminalisation in 1993, and the passage of Marriage Equality in 2015, there is still much to do. In addition to requiring effective hate speech legislation, the defence of provocation does allow a person accused of murder to claim that a romantic or sexual advance by an LGBTQ+ person resulted in a loss of control leading to the killing of that person. In this episode, we explore cases where this partial defence was employed at trial and appeal: the killing of John Roche in 1982, the murder of Gerard Hackett in 2002, and the kidnap and murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming in 1998. He played for Holy Name, Skelmersdale, Kirkby Town amongst others but most notably Marine where he had his longest and most successful stint. He tells us the signs to look out for and how to look out for your friends and team-mates. He tells us tales from all the clubs he played for over the years including one about meeting Pele! and the players he played with and against and throughout those times. [3-part documentary] Episode 3 of 3 - Darkest before the dawn. 1900s - 2000s In this new Yarn Miniseries I'm going to give you a rough history of Disability. In episode three things start with one of modern history's darkest ideas, Eugenics. We explore its prevalence, especially in America and some of its most famous proponents. Then we jump over to Post WW2 Britain and we uncover how wars not only created Disabled people but how post war periods also led to infrastructure and programmes that helped people with disabilities. We will confront the horrific conditions Disabled residents of institutions were forced to live in and see how the era of the big institution eventually came to an end. We'll intersect with the Civil Rights movement and see how it inspired the Parent's movement, which led to the Independent Living movement and the fight for Human Rights for people with Disabilities. [3-part documentary] Episode 1 of 3 - Parallel Worlds. Prehistory - 1400s In this new Yarn Miniseries I'm going to give you a rough history of Disability. The story of Disability runs in parallel with the story of humanity itself and like the story of humanity, some of it isn't pretty. It involves murder, neglect, segregation and sterilisation but it's also a story of innovation, determination and love. In episode one I define what a disability is before diving into the past. I start with the Neanderthals, checking in with the Egyptians, the Celts, the Ancient Romans and I also highlight the effect organised Religion has on the perception of people with a disability. For this month of October, month of mission, Fr John Roche a member St. Patrick's Missionary Society shares his faith journey with us. Born in Athlone he spent many happy years living within the local community including playing a lot of gaelic football some of which involved playing for his county. He shares with us his journey to priesthood and of ministering in Africa for nearly 50 years. Now retired in Athlone he took time out to tell his story and share some of his thoughts on evangelisation and encouraging words to those of us living our faith in the present day. We thank Fr John for allowing us to hear him tell of his journey in faith and wish him many happy years listening to the Holy Spirit as it continues to guide him.
On this weeks programme we continue into October as the month dedicated to the missions. John has the third part of an interview with Fr John Roche SPS who is a member of the St Patrick's Missionary Society (Kiltegan Father's) who has recently returned to Ireland after a life over seas. We have our regular reflection on the Sunday gospel and a quick run through the saints of the coming week. This week interview with Fr John Roche's part three of a three part interview which will be broadcast in October. This weeks part of the interview focuses on Fr John's ministry after his expulsion from Malawi in 1992 where his journey has taken him to various countries in Africa ministering in a variety of ways. This weeks part of the interview focuses on Fr John's happy and fulfilling ministry in Malawi, from 1972 to 1992, and while his final years were calamitous, he did triumph over his adversity there. In 1992, after 20 years of serving the Malawian people, as a priest, with seven of those years as an apostolic administrator in a diocese, John was expelled under threat of death from the central African country. The end for John in Malawi happened when the powers of the country discussed the assassination of the country's bishops, following a Lenten pastoral letter promoting the the justice and peace teachings of the church. The Athlone-born priest had just 24 hours to leave Malawi, or he would have been killed.

[A travel and history documentary] It’s October 2019 and we're visiting the Chernobyl exclusion zone in the Ukraine. We'll spend two days exploring the zone with a small group of tourists and a guide and we'll stay overnight inside the exclusion zone, in Chernobyl’s only functioning hotel. This year the exclusion zone has received a surge in visitors following the popular HBO TV drama series starring Jared Harris. That series took an in-depth look into what exactly happened the night of the disaster and the events in the immediate aftermath. In this podcast we will focus much more on the zone as it is today, its most intriguing sites and its recently declassified secret origin. So come with us as we explore what was once, the most dangerous place on earth. - Written and produced by John Roche. Music score and sound mixing by Drembot. It doesn't take much for John Roche to be happy in his second year of retirement. Besides the obvious of good shelter, good food, and good health he needs two things only: something to make him think and someone or something that he cares about. John is the second of my series of checking in with college friends to see how retirement is going for them.
