Joshua Green discusses his involvement with the Curator's Circle at LACMA, which provides opportunities to visit artist studios and attend special curator-led tours of exhibits. He mentions having lunch with the head of the photography department at LACMA who expressed interest in meeting Paris Chong. The Curator's Circle events offer insights into artists' processes and curators' decision-making when organizing exhibitions, providing a deeper understanding of art. Green mentions visiting Tristan Duke's studio and a curator trip to the Cheech Museum in Riverside, highlighting the value of gaining extra knowledge beyond simply viewing art on the wall. He's been involved with the Curator's Circle for about two years and enjoys learning about art through these experiences.Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Joshua Greenhttps://youtu.be/TWzl7Ya_hfshttps://www.theparischongshow.com
Joshua Green sits with Paris and discusses his long history with photography, starting from building a darkroom with his father as a child. He shot for his high school paper and various independent papers at UCLA. Despite his love for photography, he faced challenges at Art Center due to an allergy to the chemicals used in traditional development, which forced him to leave the program midway. Now, he primarily uses digital cameras for his photography, but Paris Chong has not yet seen much of his work and expresses a desire to view it. They also briefly mention discussing ideas for making positive changes in the world, jokingly referencing lawsuits related to water issues.Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Joshua Greenhttps://youtu.be/TWzl7Ya_hfshttps://www.theparischongshow.com
Joshua Green explains that the biggest water issue in California is management, as the state has allocated five and a half times more water rights than actually exist. He discusses a major project, the Delta Conveyance Project (formerly the Peripheral Canal), which his organization, C-WIN, has been suing the state over for 25 years due to lack of funding, water rights, and construction permits. Green highlights historical water rights issues dating back to the Gold Rush and the current "use it or lose it" system that incentivizes water-intensive agriculture, like almonds and pistachios, which consume a vast amount of water, often for export. He also mentions that the Resnick family, known for their agricultural businesses, face criticism for their water use. C-WIN's approach involves litigation based on the Public Trust doctrine to ensure water is available for everyone and everything, including fish and wildlife, as the state's mismanagement has led to significant problems.Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Joshua Greenhttps://youtu.be/TWzl7Ya_hfshttps://www.theparischongshow.com
Paris Chong and Joshua Green discuss Joshua's mother, Dorothy Green, who founded Heal the Bay and other organizations focused on environmental issues, particularly water. Dorothy Green was described as a "serial entrepreneur" who started organizations to address problems, then left them in good hands to tackle new issues. One organization she founded aimed to get government agencies to communicate about the LA and San Gabriel Rivers, now known as the Council for Watershed Health. Her last organization, the California Water Impact Network (C-WIN), focuses on litigation to uphold state water laws. They also discuss the recent fires and the issue of drained reservoirs leaving firefighters without water, as well as broader water management problems in California.Show Clip from The Paris Chong Show with Joshua Greenhttps://youtu.be/TWzl7Ya_hfshttps://www.theparischongshow.com

On Monday, Bloomberg News broke the story that Chinese officials were considering allowing Elon Musk to buy TikTok—something that, if it happened, would be earth-shaking for a whole host of reasons (though Elon, Inc. listeners heard us discuss the possibility months ago). Host Max Chafkin talks to Bloomberg social media reporter Kurt Wagner about what a Musk-owned TikTok could mean for the US (and China). Then Bloomberg political writer Joshua Green joins Chafkin and Musk reporter Dana Hull to unpack the ongoing MAGA feud between two of America’s most famous far-right figures: Musk and Steve Bannon. Recently, a Democratic pollster surveyed the value of celebrity endorsement on the presidential race—looking at a sample of younger voters. The upshot was that Zendaya was the most influential celebrity—but Elon's name came up, too. He was one of the celebrities whose endorsement sends people running the other way. Call him an anti-influencer. SERIES 2 EPISODE 180: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: We may have had a breakthrough with the electorate. Democratic AND Republican pollsters are finding a shocking number of undecideds or Republicans who will not vote for Trump because of his talk of trying to make himself eligible for a third term, or eliminating term limits entirely, or elections entirely. The fundamental lesson of January 6th - that he will never leave office voluntarily - has sunk in. And which ever way the cult is trying to position it, these voters are taking it seriously. More over, these seem pollsters are finding a sudden surge in independent and even Republican backlash against The Supreme Court because the gutting of Roe-V-Wade has caused countless voters to reconsider what kind of havoc a corrupted Trump-owned Court would be willing to do to fraudulently bring about the America the fascists want. It's stunning news and combined with additional polling showing Biden running far behind Democratic Senators in the swing state, it suggests not only that there are margins of victory to be added to his vote totals in those states, but that there is a straightforward way to get them: campaign AGAINST dictatorship, third terms, and a rogue Court. PLUS: THE DEFENSE RESTS at the Trump Trial. Literally, in his case. All you need to know about what happened was that on Trump's Tuesday posse was comedian Joe Piscopo, who was very good on his last hit, Saturday Night Live, which he just left recently. Well, no, not recently - FORTY YEARS AGO THIS MONTH. B-Block (30:47) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Marco Rubio doesn't know what the phrase "last name" means. Chris Cillizza has just discovered people have been diagnosing mental acuity of presidential candidates from afar (it started a decade ago, by Trump. Chris thinks it started earlier this week with Stuart Stevens). And having burned through CNN, MSNBC, PBS, and Fox News, Tucker Carlson premieres on Russia-24. C-Block (37:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: At 5:40 AM he told me he was going to get my fired from our radio station, and kill me. At 6:40 AM he was promising me a multi-year contract as a new sportscaster on our radio station. It's more than four decades ago and it is still as scary an experience as I've had in my career. The remarkable shift in the economic ideas at the heart of the Democratic Party—from the embrace of neoliberalism in the '90s to the left-wing populism that Joe Biden accommodates today—traces its origins to the 2008 financial crisis. Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders and AOC after her, put the economic frustrations of ordinary Americans at the heart of her policies, making fashionable a populism of the left that was not unlike Donald Trump's brand of it on the right. Journalist Joshua Green joins host Richard Aldous to discuss the rise of those who helped reorient the Democratic Party as told in his new book, The Rebels: Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the Struggle for a New American Politics (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/586025/the-rebels-by-joshua-green/).

He has also written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Vanity Fair. Green regularly appears on CNN, MSNBC, HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, and PBS's Washington Week and Frontline. ABOUT THE REBELS From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Devil's Bargain comes the revelatory inside story of the uprising within the Democratic Party, of the economic populists led by Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In his classic book Devil's Bargain, Joshua Green chronicled how the forces of economic populism on the right, led by the likes of Steve Bannon, turned Donald Trump into their flawed but powerful vessel. In The Rebels, he gives an epic account of the long struggle that has played out in parallel on the left, told through an intimate reckoning with the careers of the three political figures who have led the charge most prominently. Based on remarkable inside sourcing and razor-sharp analysis, The Rebels uses the grand narrative of a political party undergoing tumult and transformation to tell an even larger story about the fate of America. For many years, as Green recounts, the Democrats made their bed with Wall Street and big tech, relying on corporate money for electioneering and embracing the worldview that technological and financial innovation and globalization were a powerful net good, a rising tide lifting all boats. Yes, there were howls of pain, but they were written off by most of the elites as the moaning of sore losers mired in the past. There were always some Democratic politicians representing the old labor base who resisted the new dispensation, but these figures never made it very far on a national level. For one thing, they didn't have the money. But as income inequality ballooned, widening the gulf between the wealthy elite and everyone else, pressures began to build. With the 2008 crisis, those forces finally erupted into plain sight, turning this book's protagonists into national icons. At its heart, The Rebels tells the riveting human story of the rise and fight of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from the financial crisis on, as outrage over the unfairness of the American system formed a flood tide of political revolution. That same tide that would sweep Trump into office was blunted on the left, as the Democratic party found itself riven by culture war issues between its centrists and its progressives. But the winds behind economic populism still howl at gale force. Whether the Democrats can bridge their divisions and home in on a vision that unites the party, and perhaps even the country, in the face of the most violently deranged political landscape since the Civil War will be the ultimate test of the legacies of all three characters. A masterful account of one of the defining political stories of our age, The Rebels cements Joshua Green's stature at the first rank of American writers explaining how we've arrived at this pass and what lies ahead. In early 2020, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told New York Magazine that, “In any other country [she and President Joe Biden] would not be in the same party.” Yet, by April of that year, after Bernie Sanders dropped out, she “absolutely” threw her support behind Biden, saying “the stakes are too high when it comes to another four years of [former President Donald] Trump.” Since Trump's victory in 2016, opposition to the former president has served as one of the strongest organizing principles for the Democratic Party. And that dynamic has likely helped paper over some of the “progressive left vs. establishment” divides that were visible in the 2016 and 2020 primaries. While the 2024 Democratic primary is essentially uncompetitive, some cracks in that unity have still emerged. For example, since Biden took office, one of his steepest declines in support has been among young voters, a cohort that backed Sanders in 2016 and 2020. Differing views of the current war between Israel and Hamas have further highlighted the generational divide in the party. In this installment of the 538 Politics podcast, Galen speaks with author Joshua Green about those divides, where they come from and how they may manifest in 2024. Green's new book is titled, “The Rebels: Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the Struggle for a New American Politics.” Learn more about your ad choices.
