Now, strangely as the party finds itself in electoral crisis, its federal leader, Peter Dutton, is speaking out against heads of business on a surprising topic: the Voice to Parliament. When Liberal MP Julia Banks quit the Morrison government in 2018, her resignation was cited as an example of how hostile the political environment can be towards women. But Banks' story and her resignation happened to coincide with a landmark report: Respect@Work. That report, and the changes it recommended, languished on the desk of the former government. But reform is now finally coming into effect and, in theory, should change the workplace for women. Today, former politician Julia Banks, on the report she watched be pushed aside, and her hope that this year it's finally going to change our workplaces for the better. Power Play by Julia Banks delves into the toxic workplace culture in Parliament House – and now is the time to read it. But before you do, listen to this episode. In today’s conversation, hosted by our managing editor Gemma Dawkins, you’ll hear how Julia was verbally abused and told she was a “pighead,” by a male Liberal staffer inside her own home. Her son was upstairs studying at the time. She was also told to “stop acting like a fucking CEO”. How did she react in these toxic situations? We asked her. Julia shocked Australia when she announced she would stand as an independent MP in 2018. Following her resignation, the PM’s office span a public narrative that she couldn’t cope and was emotionally unstable – today we talk about what it was like in the middle of a narrative so removed from the truth. We also talk ambition, motherhood and all the in-between and as always, don’t leave anything out. Purchase Power Play by Julia Banks See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The first high=temperature cooking stage will develop a deeply caramelised top, while the lower one is to cook the cake until it has just a slight wobble in the centre, or reaches 68 degrees C on a digital thermometer. If chilled after cooking, bring to room temperature before eating.Step 1. Preheat oven to 240degrees C fan-formed. Line base and side of a 22cm springform tin with two pieces of baking paper, extending paper 5cm above the rim of the tin (see note).Step 2. Beat 1kg room temperature cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on medium speed until smooth. Gradually beat in 500ml pouring cream until just combined, occasionally scraping down the sides of the bowl. Add 270g caster sugar and 1tsp fine salt; beat for 2 minutes. Add 20gm each sifted plain flour and cornflour, and 2 egg yolks; beat until incorporated. Add 5 room temperature whole eggs (60gm each), one at a time, beating after each addition until just combined (3 minutes).Step 3. Sieve mixture into prepared tin and level. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven until top is deeply caramelised (40-45minutes). Reduce temperature to 150degrees C and bake until cheesecake is cooked but has a slight wobble in the centre (15minutes). Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely before slicing.NB – how to line the tin.Tear off two 30cm x 45cm lengths of baking paper. Place one sheet over the tin, then place the second sheet across the first. Press paper down firmly to cover the base and sides of the tin, then fold the overhanging papers slightly over the rim. The creases in the paper will add character to the sides of the cooked cheesecake, while the excess paper on top will prevent the cake from overcooking. To serve, ease the baking paper away from the sides of the cheesecake and cut with a hot dry knife, wiping between cuts.

The Sydney lockdown continues into its third week and the Gladys Berejiklian show moves into the full public relations mode and spin cycle to get itself out of political trouble. It's almost as though if the NSW Government put as much effort into managing the effects of COVID-19 as they put into media manipulation, there would be no lockdown to speak of. But where is the challenge in doing the right thing in the first place? The facade of “The Woman Who Saved Australia” so prominently promoted in the media just a few weeks ago has receded into the distance, and slowly being replaced with an understanding that Berejiklian is now the woman who let her ideology stand in the way of the public interest. And she was all on her own, as the Prime Minister for Sydney – who is also in the position of Prime Minister of Australia but that seems to be a lesser role – disappeared for five days. Strangely for a Prime Minister who loves to make announcements, there was no announcement of his whereabouts, but he did return with what appeared to be a new tonsure and extra hair implants. And what of the Liberal Party? Scott Morrison seems to be the end point of a lineage that commenced in the early 1990s, when the Liberal Party purged all of its moderates and turned itself into a fully-fledged conservative party, based on all the worst attributes of the US Republicans and the British Conservatives. And it's not a very good look, as can be attested by the former Liberal Party member for Chisholm, Julia Banks, who provides an excellent description of Scott Morrison: a menacing and controlling wallpaper. The Liberal Party needs to be reformed from the rank conservative party it has become, into a political party Menzies and Fraser could be proud of, but that may have to wait until it finds itself in opposition again. And after the mismanagement of vaccination, quarantine and now the Sydney lockdown that didn't need to happen, that stint in opposition might not be too far away.

Her Good Weekend piece is an edited extract from her upcoming book Power Play: Breaking Through Bias, Barriers and Boys' Clubs.    Read the full story: https://www.smh.com.au/national/shut-up-and-take-your-hrt-ex-mp-julia-banks-on-canberra-s-boys-club-20210514-p57s31.html Become a subscriber: our supporters power our newsrooms and are critical for the sustainability of news coverage. A minister's hand on her knee during a late-night vote at Parliament House left Julia Banks shocked. If this could happen to her, a 52-year-old corporate lawyer-turned-MP, who else is it happening to? Julia Banks opens about the sexism and bullying that lead to her resignation from the Liberal party, and this government's "women problem."In response to Julia Banks' comments, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister said:“The Prime Minister was disappointed in Ms Banks' decision to quit the Parliamentary party and had several conversations with her to understand what she was going through to see what support could be offered before she made her decision. That included support for personal leave so she could take the time to recover from the upset many people suffered during that period. Several of Ms Banks' colleagues had similar conversations. “The Prime Minister absolutely rejects claims about the nature of those conversations. “The Prime Minister is not aware of any allegations of sexual harassment Ms Banks faced. Any such behaviour is completely inappropriate. “Everyone has a right to feel safe in their workplace, and the work currently underway by Kate Jenkins will continue to improve Parliament's workplace culture. “In addition, the Government has released the consultation report provided by Stephanie Foster PSM into the processes and procedures relating to serious incidents in the parliamentary workplace. This report has made some significant findings and recommendations to improve how serious incidents are prevented and dealt with in the parliamentary workplace. We have already taken steps to implement Ms Foster's recommendations, including the introduction of a dedicated 24/7 support line, 1800 274 778, and face-to-face education and support for parliamentarians and their staff. “The Foster Report also provides a recommendation for an independent and confidential support mechanism. This body of work is complex, however consultation across the Parliament is underway. The Government looks forward to Ms Foster bringing back a final report, informed by those briefings, as soon as possible.”Reported by Stela TodorovicProduced by Sydney Pead See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Julia Banks was a successful corporate lawyer with a couple of decades of leadership under her belt. Not one to shy away from an argument, or a challenge, she felt the tug of politics around 5 years ago.In 2016 she decided it was time to try and toss out the Labor member for the Melbourne seat of Chisholm who'd held the seat for 17 years, Anna Burke… and win the federal seat for the Liberal party. And she did! The seat became known as the one seat in the one-seat majority, and the only seat won from Labor in the 2016 election. But her enthusiasm for morphing from lawyer to legislator soon turned sour. In fact worse. Julia found parliament and her party's power plays stank. What she later called out as ‘gender bias, bullying and intimidation' has since become a regular headline describing the current Australian government…. But back in 2018, when Julia quit the Liberal party and became an Independent, she was the first woman to so boldly turn on her own party. The move was described in the media as “a blistering farewell” amid chaos and political thuggery. What followed was a relentless attack on Julia Banks sanity … from death threats to numerous attempts to discredit her. Not only did she survive and fight back … she has now dedicated herself to tackling face-on the scourge of sexism inherent in Australian politics.  Episode 57 - Starting a movement with Steve Crawford Financial advice in some form should be accessible to everyone. Whilst we often associate financial advice with investments and managing cashflow, changing behavior around money management and measuring progress towards lifestyle goals, does not receive as much attention as it should. My gest today is Steve Crawford, Advice Leader of The Advice Movement. He sheds light on the importance of financial literacy in today’s constantly shifting economic climate. He discusses his role as the founder of The Advice Movement which is driving change in the way financial advice is provided to the Gen X and Gen Y population. He also shares some of the problems he sees in the financial industry, describes how he and his team seek to solve them and explains how a financial adviser can benefit you regardless of financial status. Don’t miss this week’s segment of Reuben’s Rant where I share my opinion on Julia Banks defecting from the Liberal Party and why I think it’s not right. “The fear of making the wrong decision sort of keeps everybody thinking they need to stay inside the system and dependent on it. We’re really just trying to break that right from the outset.” - Steve Crawford   This week on The Finance Hour Podcast: What drove Steve to start the Advice Movement? His thoughts on what the financial industry is today and who it serves. Why the industry is set up to keep everybody confused. The percentage of licenses in the country owned by four banks. Problems in the financial industry today and the solutions he proposes. How the industry changed over the past ten years. His thoughts on industry disruptors and how you can prepare for it. What the Advice Movements looks like right now and where it is headed.   Connect with Steve Crawford The Advice Movement Experience Wealth Facebook LinkedIn Twitter #LTMA19 event   Subscribe to The Finance Hour Podcast with Reuben Zelwer! Josh Frydenberg, who became treasurer and deputy Liberal leader in the tumultuous events of August, said the party has “big challenges”. While the party is “disappointed” by this week’s defection of Julia Banks to the crossbench they “remain as a group focused on the challenges ahead. And we have big challenges, there’s no doubt about that.” He said he “absolutely” will be keeping in touch with Banks. Frydenberg reiterates that the Liberal party is still a “broad church” and says he isn’t concerned about other MPs like Craig Kelly following Banks’ suit. “I know that Craig is a strong Liberal and that Craig will continue to put the government’s case.”
