Really Interesting Women - the podcastEp. 138Jo StanleyJo Stanley has had an incredibly successful media career spanning over 2 decades. During that time, amongst many other achievements, she took 2 radio shows on 2 different networks to Number 1. She's probably the only woman in Australia to ever do this. She was co-host of The House of Wellness TV and Radio, is producer and host of numerous podcasts, writes a regular column for the Sunday Life Magazine, and is the creator of the ‘Play Like a Girl' children's book series. Most of us would recognise Jo from her television appearances on Australia's Brainiest Kid, The Panel, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Thank God You're Here, The Projet, Studio 10 and Hughesy, We Have a Problem. But it's what she's done more recently that is, I think, her most impressive undertaking. Having the experience she had, Jo became concerned that there was no radio station catering to women's interests and life experience. So... she is building a new radio network for women, by women called Broad Radio. She's an incredibly hard worker, fun, funny, has a searing intellect and a good heart. Others have described her as having 'a warm and vibrant honesty'. I agree. Have a listen to our conversation by heading to the link in my bio.Jo's new radio network can be found by downloading the broad radio app or by heading to www.broadradio.com.au and listening live. 13.10.23What Happens Next? What Can Influencers Teach Us About Women and Work? | 89 New this season: Subscribe to Monash's YouTube channel to watch the video version of each full episode. They're in your social media feeds, on YouTube, and these they're days even appearing in movies. The rise of influencer culture has been meteoric, but what's going on behind the selfie stick? And what does it have to do with gender dynamics? This episode of Monash University's "What Happens Next?" podcast, hosted by Dr Susan Carland, features insightful discussions with experts in the field, including public relations academic Dr Kate Fitch; Jo Stanley, co-founder and CEO of Broad Radio; and content creator Olivia White, all of whom bring their unique perspectives to the table. Being an influencer is not just a hobby or part-time gig – it's a billion-dollar industry primarily powered by women. Nevertheless, male influencers are paid about 30 per cent more than female influencers. Kate explains that the pay gap is only the tip of the iceberg of gender inequity in this precarious line of work. Jo, a veteran broadcaster, highlights that content creation requires a high level of skill. Influencers and content creators are adept at understanding and conveying stories that resonate with their audiences, making it appear effortless to connect with followers. She also points out that traditional media has been slow to include female voices, perhaps as a result of unconscious bias. The rise of the internet presented an opportunity for female creators to carve out digital spaces for themselves, democratising content creation. Mommy-blogger-turned-social-media-influencer Olivia talks about the struggle to balance authenticity with privacy. She discusses the ethics of sharing information about her children online, as well as the threat of cancel culture and algorithm changes that all influencers face. 06.10.23What Happens Next?Does Influencer Culture Have a Dark Side? | 88 New this season: Subscribe to Monash's YouTube channel to watch the video version of each full episode. This week on What Happens Next?, we're kickstarting a new series on influencer culture. Did you know roughly 70% of influencers identify as female? Specific industry research indicates that this percentage can be even higher on certain platforms, for instance, 80% of content monetisation influencers on Instagram are women. In this new episode of Monash University's podcast, “What Happens Next?”, our guests look into the societal perceptions surrounding feminized labor. We delve into the influence of stereotypes on public perception of influencers. We also discuss the experience of living a life where every moment is an opportunity for content creation and the potential impact it may have on one's well-being. Dr Kate Fitch from Monash University Faculty of Arts, provides insight into the billions of dollars the influencer marketing industry creates. Based on findings by Ogilvy's research, the worth has surged from $1.7 billion to $16.4 billion over the past eight years. Well known influencer and content creator, Olivia White, gives us a first hand account of the negative perceptions of the industry. She provides a fascinating behind the scenes insight into the life of a professional content creator. Jo Stanley, the CEO of Broad Radio and a prominent broadcaster, delves into the profound influence of gender norms and stereotypes on the media landscape. She highlights how the internet has ushered in a new era of empowerment for women, enabling them to break into an area historically dominated by men. Additionally, Jo explores the intriguing dynamics between the public and private spheres and delves into the captivating concept of para-social relationships. SLOPPY SECONDS WITH JO STANLEYToday we have our second return co-host - the one and only Jo Stanley. Jo joined us for episode 10 on 23rd March and talked us through her late start to dating, her early(ish) marriage and making it work through the trials and tribulations of life, love, alcohol, date nights and kids. In this episode Jo asks me about how to support friends through divorce and separation. We take some awesome listener calls on what to do if your partner gets jealous when you exercise (that one floored us both) and Mari calls back to tell us how's she's going post-chemo. As always Jo is thoughtful, kind and hilarious – there's a reason I asked her back. We recorded this ep on zoom but don't worry, I upped the wifi and it sounds good. “My career has done a lot to exacerbate my natural inclination towards anxiety! But I also see it as a privilege to be able to be a voice for those who aren't heard very often in mainstream media,” says celebrity radio and tv presenter, comedian and columnist Jo Stanley. “For me that specifically means diverse women, and I'm passionate about women's and girl's health, gender equality, social justice and mindfulness.” Jo describes herself as an introvert who was a standup comedian, a night owl who was a breakfast radio host, and someone who is innately risk averse who is now a startup founder. Jo is today's guest on our radio show Brainwaves, and will talk about mental health, gender equality and founding Broad Radio — radio by women for women. Episode 10: The Story of Anne Bonny & Mary Read Anne had flaming red hair, and the stereotypical fiery temper to go with it. She was the illegitimate daughter of Irish lawyer, William Cormac. In those days, having a child out of wedlock was kind of a big deal. William Cormac's maidservant, Mary, gave birth to Anne in sixteen ninety seven. Shortly after her birth and, not surprisingly, William's wife found out about the child and his mistress. So William fled with Mary and baby Anne to America, in order to avoid the scandal. They settled in Charleston, where they fell into a tumultuous life with a Troublesome Anne. As Anne got older, her father wanted nothing more than a respectable marriage for his daughter, but Anne had a mind of her own. A respectable marriage was not on her list of things to do.
