345 | Will Governor Jeff Landry's Push to Execute More People get an Innocent Man Killed? w/Piper French

Today, Hunter spoke with journalist Piper French about the wrongful conviction of Jimmie “Chris” Duncan. In 1998, Duncan was convicted of murdering his girlfriend's 23-month-old daughter. Originally, Duncan was charged with negligent homicide as it appeared his story, that he stepped away for a few minutes while the child took a bath and then she fell and drowned, was accurate. However, the notorious peddler of the junk science bite mark “evidence,” Dr. Michael West, conducted a dubious autopsy where he pressed a mould of Duncan's teeth into the body of the girl. With this dubious autopsy and the help of a jail house snitch, the state convicted Duncan of capital murder. Since then, Duncan has been fighting to prove his innocence, but with Governor Jeff Landry's drive to increase the number of executions in the Louisiana, Duncan might never get the chance.     Guest Piper French, Part Time Staff Writer at Bolt Magazine, Freelance Journalist   Resources: Read the Article Here https://boltsmag.org/the-human-cost-of-jeff-landrys-drive-to-resume-executions/ https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2025/03/louisiana-execution-bolts-chris-duncan-jeff-landry-death-row-capital-punishment/  Read more by Piper Here https://www.psfrench.com/ Contact Piper piperstrehlowfrench@gmail.com https://x.com/pipersfrench https://bsky.app/profile/psfrench.bsky.social Read more About Duncan's Case Here https://innocenceproject.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-an-innocent-man-jimmie-chris-duncan/ https://www.propublica.org/article/louisiana-jimmie-duncan-bite-mark-analysis-death-row-junk-science   Contact Hunter Parnell:                                 Publicdefenseless@gmail.com  Instagram @PublicDefenselessPodcast Twitter                                                                 @PDefenselessPod www.publicdefenseless.com  Subscribe to the Patron www.patreon.com/PublicDefenselessPodcast  Donate on PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5KW7WMJWEXTAJ Donate on Stripe https://donate.stripe.com/7sI01tb2v3dwaM8cMN Trying to find a specific part of an episode? Man remains on death row despite faulty bite mark evidence; LSU Lady Tigers gear up for March Madness

Nine prisoners are walking free after being convicted in part on faulty evidence presented by Mississippi dentist Michael West and his pathological partner Dr. Steven Hayne. Seven of those nine convictions involved bite mark evidence, and three of the recently-freed men had been on death row. There is one inmate left who awaits execution based on evidence presented by the now defamed medical professionals, and state prosecutors aren't budging about his guilt. All the while, Louisiana had been gearing up for its first nitrogen gas execution, which has since been temporarily barred by a federal judge. Richard Webster, a reporter for Verite News and ProPublica  has been following this closely, and joins us to share more. The 2025 March Madness tournaments are just around the corner, and all eyes are on the LSU women's basketball team. The Lady Tigers won the championship in 2023, and lost in the Elite Eight in 2024. While this year's squad will lack the familiar faces of Angel Reese and Haley Van Lith, fans will remember Flau'Jae Johnson, who has taken on a larger role with this year's team. And of course, there's the colorful coach Kim Mulkey and her unforgettable sideline jackets. Reed Darcey, who covers the team for the Baton Rouge Advocate, joins us to look back at  the regular season and offer tournament predictions.___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Ryan Vasquez. Low-code and no-code platforms are revolutionising application development by empowering technical and non-technical users to quickly and efficiently build powerful applications. These platforms provide intuitive visual interfaces and pre-built templates that enable users to create complex workflows, automate processes, and deploy applications without writing extensive lines of code. By simplifying development, low-code and no-code tools open up software creation to a wider range of contributors, from professional developers looking to accelerate delivery times to business users aiming to solve specific problems independently. This democratisation of development reduces the demand for IT resources and fosters a culture of innovation and agility within organisations. The impact of low-code and no-code technology extends beyond just speed and accessibility; it's transforming how businesses adapt to change and scale their digital solutions. These platforms allow companies to quickly respond to evolving customer needs, regulatory requirements, and competitive pressures without the lengthy timelines associated with traditional development cycles. In this episode, Paulina Rios Maya, Head of Industry Relations, speaks to Michael West, Analyst at Lionfish Tech Advisors about LCNC platforms and their benefits. Key Takeaways:Low-code and no-code platforms enable business solutions without coding. These platforms broaden the developer base to include non-technical users.Choosing the right platform involves considering functionality, standards, and vendor viability.Low-code platforms can handle enterprise-level applications effectively.AI integration is transforming how applications are developed.Democratisation of development addresses the shortage of professional developers. The market for low-code and no-code platforms is rapidly evolving.Future trends will focus on AI capabilities and user experience.Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Low-Code and No-Code Platforms02:59 The Evolution of Development Roles05:49 Key Considerations for Adopting LCNC Tools09:04 Democratizing Development and Innovation11:59 Future Trends in Low-Code and No-Code Markets

Summary In this episode, Tim interviews Dr. Jennifer Bird and Dr. Michael West to discuss the topic of in vitro fertilization (IVF). They address the misconceptions and propaganda surrounding IVF, particularly in right-wing fundamentalist spaces. Takeaways Life does not begin at conception but rather at around 14 days when individuation occurs. Understanding the biological facts is crucial in debunking the myth that life begins at conception. IVF is a pro-life procedure that helps individuals and couples who are unable to conceive have children. Legislation that restricts or bans IVF infringes on reproductive freedom and ignores scientific and ethical considerations. The theological and ethical aspects of reproductive rights, including abortion and IVF, are complex and require thoughtful consideration. Biblical perspectives on these topics vary, and it is important to engage in dialogue and critical examination of the texts. Women's autonomy and well-being should be central to discussions on reproductive health and technology. Education and informed decision-making are crucial in navigating the complexities of reproductive rights. The rise of Christian nationalism poses challenges to these discussions and requires a reevaluation of religious and ethical values. The Australian investment landscape is dominated by oligopolies. Many of these oligopolies are large donors to both sides of politics and seem to get an easy run when it comes to tax and regulation. Michael West runs a website that focuses on independent journalism. Part of what he does is hold companies accountable over unpaid tax, poor corporate practices and government/regulatory concerns. There is a good argument, that in Australia over the last 20 years, some of the best investments you could have made are in regulated companies and vested interests. Socially and ethically, we are supporters of Michael's work and supportive of change. As an investor, you need to invest in what the world is, not what it should be. You need to be aware that much of the value in particular Australian stocks is tied to their closeness to regulators and political parties. If this changes, then the winners/losers in the stock market could change dramatically. The Compassionate Leadership Interview

Eleanor Rutter is Assistant Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, and Leader of Sheffield's Compassionate Sheffield programme.A talented mathematician as a child, Eleanor went to medical school out of a need to seek the approval of other people. Following a complicated pregnancy, she was away from work as a hospital doctor for 18 months, after which she went into public health. She had a further two children and time off through mental ill-health, and the training programme, nominally five years, took her 12 years to complete. She had a false start in an authority with what she feels was an ‘over-medicalised' model of public health, but has now found her feet in what she describes as her “dream job.”In her current role, Eleanor leads the Compassionate Sheffield programme. It is in fulfilment of the city's 2018 public health objective to ensure that everyone has a dignified death in a place of their choice. She soon found out that there were a lot of compassionate communities doing good work in this area.Eleanor's approach is informed by the academic work of Professor Allan Kellehear at the University of Bradford. It recognises dying as a social and spiritual process first and foremost, rather than a medical one. She says that communities and neighbourhoods are best placed to allow people to live the complete lives they choose to value.Eleanor's team comprises two community development workers, one of which is an end-of-life doula, a communications officer, a clinical lead, and a programme manager. They are funded by Public Health Sheffield City Council, the ICB (Integrated Care Board), and St Luke's Hospice. She says the team is an enabler, building capacity, confidence and connections within and between communities. The main strands of the team's work to date have been advance care planning, developing training to help people navigate the end of life, building ‘death literacy' through death cafes, and leading Sheffield's covid memorial project.Atul Gawande's book ‘Being Mortal' has also had a strong influence on Eleanor's thinking. She says that by not listening to people and over-medicalising their problems we are at risk of stripping away their humanity. The next stage for Compassionate Sheffield is to build on the work that people did in the pandemic as compassionate neighbours. In the longer term, Eleanor feels that compassion runs through everything we do and its potential is far greater than transforming the end of life. For example, in Sheffield's economic anchor organisations many people are in a conversation with Michael West concerning compassionate leadership. She says “I don't think it's just a silly pipe dream, this idea of Sheffield becoming a compassionate city in its entirety.”Sheffield has not intentionally diverged from the Frome Model, which is the basis of Compassionate Communities UK. Rather, Sheffield's Health and Wellbeing Board, aware of the compassion that was already manifest in Sheffield's communities, wanted to grow Compassionate Sheffield using an asset-based approach. As white and middle class, Eleanor is very conscious of her privilege. Therefore, she has a problem with the term ‘achievements' and feels that often she has just needed to “scoop up the opportunities that were given to me.” Only two or three times in her career has she been faced with making a genuinely tough choice, which on one occasion involved insisting on doing the right thing even though her position was unpopular with some very senior colleagues.Through therapy Eleanor has learnt to see life as a learning process. One of the things she has learnt is the power of saying sorry and actually meaning it. Eleanor credits therapy as being the experience that has changed her the most. She put herself “heart and soul” into it. It was gruelling, but she is “massively transformed” and no longer driven by self-loathing.Otherwise,...

The Senate Finance and Public Administration References Committee has uncovered explosive evidence about the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) secrets-for-sale scandal. View online at: https://www.greenleft.org.au/video/video-price-waterhouse-coopers-scandal What went wrong at PwC and why is it such a big deal for Australian democracy? Suzanne James talks to investigative journalist Michael West about the PwC scandal and the unsustainability of the Big 4 government consultancy model. The scandal, triggered by a Senate Inquiry led by SA Greens Senator Barbara Pocock, has immense ramifications for Australia with a compromised corporate consultancy - the Government's own auditor - now deeply embedded in Government core business. Clients include the ATO, the AFP and Defence to name a few. The interview explores the global reach of KMPG, Deloitte, Ernst & Young and PwC, their lack of regulation and disclosure requirements, and why they are the very antithesis of democracy itself. Bob Freeman is an Occult Detective, author, artist, game designer, and musician. His lifelong passions for mythology, folklore, magick, and religion has led him to become a respected lecturer on the occult and paranormal phenomena. While his base of operations is squarely in Northern Indiana, over the years Freeman has tracked shapeshifters through the Ozarks of Arkansas, communed with spirits at Mesa Verde's Sun Temple, searched for the Holy Grail in Rosslyn Chapel, helped call down rain atop Hopi's First Mesa, hunted the Skunk Ape in the swamplands of Florida, gone spelunking in the caves of Southern Indiana and Kentucky in search of Paisa, and more… His published fiction includes the Cairnwood Manor series — Shadows Over Somerset and Keepers of the Dead — and the Tales of the Liber Monstrorum — First Born and Descendant. Freeman has also written numerous short stories, articles, and reviews for various online and print publications, and as an illustrator, his art has been showcased on book covers by authors such as Steven L. Shrewsbury, Michael West, and Christine Morgan. Freeman lives in the haunted hinterlands of Indiana with his wife Kim and son Connor. When most people imagine an Occult Detective, they think in terms of fiction, in which a story is told, regardless of medium, that combines the tropes of traditional detective stories with those found in supernatural horror. Occult Detectives, however, are more than just fictional characters. Occult Detectives are investigators who immerse themselves in all things strange and unusual. More than just “ghost hunters”, occult detectives are well versed in all manner of occult and magical traditions; in the beliefs, denominations, cults, and sects of traditional and fringe religions; in folk and shamanic practices; in conspiracy theories of all stripes; in ancient aliens, alien abductions, ufology, cryptozoology, altered states of consciousness, ancient history and archaeology, cryptoanthropology, psychic phenomena, and other Fortean matters; in climate change and geopolitics; in secret societies and political structures. And more… so much more. Occult detectives have a diverse skill set that ranges from the scientific to the fantastic and all points in between.
