Does healthcare have a moral emergency? In this episode of the Medicine and Science podcast, Kamran Abbasi sits down with healthcare leaders Maureen Bisognano, president emerita of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and Bob Klaber, director of strategy at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, to discuss why they're calling the lack of humanity in medicine an emergency. We ask why this dangerous imbalance between the rational (efficiency, data, and metrics) and the relational (human connection, empathy, and listening) has developed in modern medicine. We also learn how simple changes, like asking "What matters to you?" instead of just "What's the matter?, can help us put the humanity back into healthcare. Today on Ascend: The Great Books Podcast, Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Dr. Michael West discuss the top of Mount Purgatory: The Earthly Paradise (Cantos 28-31). Check out our WRITTEN GUIDE to the Purgatorio.Check Ascend out on X, Facebook, Youtube, and More! They explore the serene, uncultivated garden where Dante encounters the mysterious Matilda picking flowers, the two rivers (Lethe, which erases the memory of sin, and Eunoe, which restores the memory of good deeds), and the elaborate apocalyptic procession featuring candelabras, elders, symbolic creatures, the griffin-drawn chariot of the Church, and dancers representing the theological and cardinal virtues. The discussion highlights Dante's use of erotic imagery, classical allusions (Proserpina, Venus, Hero and Leander), and the communal themes running through the Commedia, while noting how Purgatorio depicts the gradual strengthening of the will through spiritual “exercise,” much like physical training. The conversation then turns to the dramatic appearance of Beatrice in Canto 30, her stern rebuke of Dante for pursuing “shadows of false goods” after her death, and the emotional departure of Virgil, whose guidance ends as Beatrice assumes the role of divine wisdom. They interpret Canto 31 as a sacramental confession scene in which Dante acknowledges his sins, experiences contrition while gazing at Beatrice's eyes reflecting the dual-natured griffin (Christ), and is immersed in the River Lethe by Matilda. The hosts reflect on the limits of human reason and mentorship (Virgil), the incarnational role of beauty in leading the soul to God, the necessity of properly ordered eros, and the deeper Christian vision that Eden is not the final destination but a way station toward the beatific vision. The episode ends with anticipation for the conclusion of Purgatorio in the next installment.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Ascend and the Great Books02:19 Exploring Dante's Purgatorio: Canto 28-3104:03 Scholarship and Themes in Dante06:52 The Role of Community in Dante's Works09:43 Personal Reflections on Purgatorio12:20 The Earthly Paradise and Its Significance14:48 Matilda: A Symbol of Beauty and Desire17:44 The Rivers of Lethe and Eunoë20:25 The Dichotomy of Memory in Dante's Vision33:04 The Nature of Confession and Memory34:32 Exploring Apocalyptic Imagery38:08 The Role of Virtues in Spiritual Life45:58 The Significance of the Procession52:43 The Transition from Virgil to Beatrice01:04:09 Virgil's Journey and Final Gift01:05:25 The Role of Mentorship and Growth01:07:24 The Pain of Separation from Mentors01:08:58 Understanding Virgil's Absence01:10:52 Beatrice's Introduction and New Guidance01:12:22 Beatrice's Sarcasm and Wisdom01:14:07 The Complexity of Virgil's Guidance01:15:11 The Nature of True Goodness01:17:04 The Pursuit of Apparent Goods01:19:47 Beatrice as an Icon of Divine Beauty01:21:41 The Role of Pity in Relationships01:25:56 The Sacrament of Confession01:27:43 The Importance of Tears and Remorse01:33:41 The Vision of the Griffin and ChristGood work reading the great books! Today, Hunter spoke with journalist Piper French about the wrongful conviction of Jimmie “Chris” Duncan. In 1998, Duncan was convicted of murdering his girlfriend's 23-month-old daughter. Originally, Duncan was charged with negligent homicide as it appeared his story, that he stepped away for a few minutes while the child took a bath and then she fell and drowned, was accurate. However, the notorious peddler of the junk science bite mark “evidence,” Dr. Michael West, conducted a dubious autopsy where he pressed a mould of Duncan's teeth into the body of the girl. With this dubious autopsy and the help of a jail house snitch, the state convicted Duncan of capital murder. Since then, Duncan has been fighting to prove his innocence, but with Governor Jeff Landry's drive to increase the number of executions in the Louisiana, Duncan might never get the chance. Nine prisoners are walking free after being convicted in part on faulty evidence presented by Mississippi dentist Michael West and his pathological partner Dr. Steven Hayne. Seven of those nine convictions involved bite mark evidence, and three of the recently-freed men had been on death row. There is one inmate left who awaits execution based on evidence presented by the now defamed medical professionals, and state prosecutors aren't budging about his guilt. All the while, Louisiana had been gearing up for its first nitrogen gas execution, which has since been temporarily barred by a federal judge. Richard Webster, a reporter for Verite News and ProPublica has been following this closely, and joins us to share more. The 2025 March Madness tournaments are just around the corner, and all eyes are on the LSU women's basketball team. The Lady Tigers won the championship in 2023, and lost in the Elite Eight in 2024. While this year's squad will lack the familiar faces of Angel Reese and Haley Van Lith, fans will remember Flau'Jae Johnson, who has taken on a larger role with this year's team. And of course, there's the colorful coach Kim Mulkey and her unforgettable sideline jackets. Reed Darcey, who covers the team for the Baton Rouge Advocate, joins us to look back at the regular season and offer tournament predictions.___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Ryan Vasquez. Instead, the police dragged the organisers to Court and furthered the public's perception that they're acting under political pressure to protect the interests of the fossil fuel industry.”
Low-code and no-code platforms are revolutionising application development by empowering technical and non-technical users to quickly and efficiently build powerful applications. These platforms provide intuitive visual interfaces and pre-built templates that enable users to create complex workflows, automate processes, and deploy applications without writing extensive lines of code. By simplifying development, low-code and no-code tools open up software creation to a wider range of contributors, from professional developers looking to accelerate delivery times to business users aiming to solve specific problems independently. This democratisation of development reduces the demand for IT resources and fosters a culture of innovation and agility within organisations. The impact of low-code and no-code technology extends beyond just speed and accessibility; it's transforming how businesses adapt to change and scale their digital solutions. These platforms allow companies to quickly respond to evolving customer needs, regulatory requirements, and competitive pressures without the lengthy timelines associated with traditional development cycles. In this episode, Paulina Rios Maya, Head of Industry Relations, speaks to Michael West, Analyst at Lionfish Tech Advisors about LCNC platforms and their benefits. Key Takeaways:Low-code and no-code platforms enable business solutions without coding. These platforms broaden the developer base to include non-technical users.Choosing the right platform involves considering functionality, standards, and vendor viability.Low-code platforms can handle enterprise-level applications effectively.AI integration is transforming how applications are developed.Democratisation of development addresses the shortage of professional developers. The market for low-code and no-code platforms is rapidly evolving.Future trends will focus on AI capabilities and user experience.Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Low-Code and No-Code Platforms02:59 The Evolution of Development Roles05:49 Key Considerations for Adopting LCNC Tools09:04 Democratizing Development and Innovation11:59 Future Trends in Low-Code and No-Code Markets

Summary In this episode, Tim interviews Dr. Jennifer Bird and Dr. Michael West to discuss the topic of in vitro fertilization (IVF). They address the misconceptions and propaganda surrounding IVF, particularly in right-wing fundamentalist spaces. Takeaways Life does not begin at conception but rather at around 14 days when individuation occurs. Understanding the biological facts is crucial in debunking the myth that life begins at conception. IVF is a pro-life procedure that helps individuals and couples who are unable to conceive have children. Legislation that restricts or bans IVF infringes on reproductive freedom and ignores scientific and ethical considerations. The theological and ethical aspects of reproductive rights, including abortion and IVF, are complex and require thoughtful consideration. Biblical perspectives on these topics vary, and it is important to engage in dialogue and critical examination of the texts. Women's autonomy and well-being should be central to discussions on reproductive health and technology. Education and informed decision-making are crucial in navigating the complexities of reproductive rights. The rise of Christian nationalism poses challenges to these discussions and requires a reevaluation of religious and ethical values. Bob Freeman is an Occult Detective, author, artist, game designer, and musician. His lifelong passions for mythology, folklore, magick, and religion has led him to become a respected lecturer on the occult and paranormal phenomena. While his base of operations is squarely in Northern Indiana, over the years Freeman has tracked shapeshifters through the Ozarks of Arkansas, communed with spirits at Mesa Verde's Sun Temple, searched for the Holy Grail in Rosslyn Chapel, helped call down rain atop Hopi's First Mesa, hunted the Skunk Ape in the swamplands of Florida, gone spelunking in the caves of Southern Indiana and Kentucky in search of Paisa, and more… His published fiction includes the Cairnwood Manor series — Shadows Over Somerset and Keepers of the Dead — and the Tales of the Liber Monstrorum — First Born and Descendant. Freeman has also written numerous short stories, articles, and reviews for various online and print publications, and as an illustrator, his art has been showcased on book covers by authors such as Steven L. Shrewsbury, Michael West, and Christine Morgan. Freeman lives in the haunted hinterlands of Indiana with his wife Kim and son Connor. When most people imagine an Occult Detective, they think in terms of fiction, in which a story is told, regardless of medium, that combines the tropes of traditional detective stories with those found in supernatural horror. Occult Detectives, however, are more than just fictional characters. Occult Detectives are investigators who immerse themselves in all things strange and unusual. More than just “ghost hunters”, occult detectives are well versed in all manner of occult and magical traditions; in the beliefs, denominations, cults, and sects of traditional and fringe religions; in folk and shamanic practices; in conspiracy theories of all stripes; in ancient aliens, alien abductions, ufology, cryptozoology, altered states of consciousness, ancient history and archaeology, cryptoanthropology, psychic phenomena, and other Fortean matters; in climate change and geopolitics; in secret societies and political structures. And more… so much more. Occult detectives have a diverse skill set that ranges from the scientific to the fantastic and all points in between. Ashley Sanchez and Aaron Keller sit down with NDOW Wildlife Diversity Biologists Mackenzie Jeffress and Michael West to talk about the different bat surveys they're working on. This includes a new effort for the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), an international interagency program designed to monitor bat distributions on public and private lands. NDOW's effort with NABat includes acoustic work involving specialized detectors that record bat calls to help us determine which bat species live in which parts of the state. On top of explaining their work, Mackenzie and Michael also share some of their favorite bat facts!
