Arnold Kamler, CEO of Kent International, discusses the evolution of his family's three generations of the bicycle business from its inception in 1906 to the present day. The journey includes the transition from retail to wholesale, adapting to market trends like racing and mountain bikes, overcoming challenges during the financial crisis and COVID-19, manufacturing in the US, moving it to Europe, then to Chin and then back to the US all the while remaining resilient in a dynamic industry that has now gone electric. Barbara Kamler Author Love, regardless—the second collection from Melbourne-based author poet Barbara Kamler—is an enthralling gallery of poetic portraits celebrating love that endures. It features a unique mode of storytelling, whereby interviews with fourteen couples are poetically crafted into rhythmic, syllabic verse. For each couple, each poem explores the intimacy of first connecting and the various complications negotiated along the way – crushing pressures of sexual or racial norms, the challenge of chronic illness or disparate histories, and demands of extended family, geographic distance or migration. Yet these are sanguine stories that transcend the trials of the everyday, making real the possibility of mutual love and joy over a lifetime. On my recent trip to India I read it cover to cover in a few hours I kept reading my husband excerpts as so many gems about love and it's many conundrums. I adored it's raw and sometimes confronting tales of love lost and found and everything in between. The stories are truly immersive and brutally honest sometimes uncomfortable but often about loyalty courage dedication and enduring connection.Deborah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/what.ive.learnt/Mind, Film and Publishing: https://www.mindfilmandpublishing.com/Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/what-ive-learnt/id153556330Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3TQjCspxcrSi4yw2YugxBkBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1365850
What can we learn from individuals who make life-and-death decisions in the most dangerous environments on the planet? Dr. Ken Kamler, Expedition Climber, Microsurgeon, and Extreme Medicine Doctor, joins our guest host Annie Duke, to talk about decision-making insights discovered on his perilous expeditions on Mount Everest, and to share his powerful account of the notorious 1996 Mount Everest Disaster. Ken and Annie discuss the importance of sticking to turnaround times on an ascent to save yourself from flawed in-the-moment decision-making, the mental challenge of turning back so close to the summit, and why Olympic bronze medalists are surprisingly often happier than silver medalists. Ken also reveals what the true goal on Everest is—hint: it's not to get to the top—and how getting the time horizons of our goals wrong can have devastating consequences for all of us.
Ever since Dr. Ken Kamler, an orthopedic microsurgeon and Fellow in the Explorers Club, found a random book with a weird name on his dad’s bookshelf that just so happened to inspire him, his life has been the definition of adventure. From Everest to Peru, he has traveled all over the world on various expeditions. Dr. Kamler has documented many of his adventures in his books. In one of these books, he records his experience as one of the only doctors on the mountain during the 1996 Everest tragedy which was later turned into the movie, Into Thin Air. However, he never envisioned himself sitting on "The Oprah Winfrey Show "as a full hour guest talking about his adventures. Before he was well-known for research on surviving the extremes, Dr. Ken Kamler signed up for a rock climbing class. He knew that that class would be the first part of achieving his dream which had been awakened by a random book that he happened to pick up. In this week’s episode, Dr. Kamler explains his practical advice for conquering one’s goals. Even if they are the size of Everest. Generous, kind and funny, John Yelenic had dated regularly but never felt he had met the woman to marry. But with his mother's wish and at the age of 29, John thought maybe it was time to settle down. Why not with Michele Magyar Kamler, the 25-year-old woman he was dating? Friends quickly ticked off the reasons for their concern, but the couple wed anyway. John would learn all too soon this would be no fairy-tale marriage.

(recorded 4/16/15)After some illnesses and schedule conflicts, we finally made it back with an opportunity to talk about the Royals' hot start to 2015 and the key contributors. We had an old voice on the show, as Chris Kamler, aka @TheFakeNed, joined us to talk about his book The Silence, The Series, and the Season of SungWoo (available at kamlerbook.com) and the spirit of Kansas City and the magical summer and postseason in 2014.After Kamler snuck away, Jeff and Mike talked about the Yordano Ventura extension, the Mike Moustakas adjustments, and the potential stardom of Lorenzo Cain.We also talked about beanball wars and retaliation (and this was even BEFORE the Brett Lawrie stuff).Follow the KCBBV on Twitter at @KCBaseballVault. You can follow Jeff at @TheJeffReport, and Mike at @michaelengel. And give our sponsor, Kelly's Westport Inn, a follow as well to keep up on all upcoming events and fun at @KellysBarKC.

This week, we discussed a few Royals news and notes as we wait for spring training to arrive. First, we talked about Jeremy Guthrie's contract restructuring and what it means for the 2014 Royals. At the time, it seemed like a change that might have bigger impacts down the line (and still could), but after reflection, Mike saw it as more of a clerical move, but was hopeful that it might mean another acquisition could happen. Jeff interpreted it as a way to kick back some money to ownership this year. We also discussed other theories. Then, we brought up the minor league signings of Brad Penny and Guillermo Mota and wondered if they have anything left in the tank. The Royals like to try out reclamation projects, and these two fit that description. Where does Penny fit in the rotation competition? What are the odds he makes the team? And how would Mota fit into an already stacked bullpen? After pondering those questions, we talked briefly about salary arbitration and which cases were still unsettled. We also talked about Baseball America's top ten Royals prospects, including a name you don't hear about very often, and we brought on Chris Kamler for a moment to add some nonsense to the show. Kamler has been helping Troy put together a video for the MLB Fan Cave that urges everyone to #VoteRoyalman. You can see that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y9BHkL-qGw #MLBFC2014

While Chris Kamler was hanging out in 100 degree heat watching little league and Jeff Herr was on assignment, Troy Olsen and Mike Engel had an afternoon discussion about the Royals weekend problems and their bipolar play lately. They covered the Billy Butler all star announcement, guessed at his odds in the Home Run Derby and talked about other All Star selections. The plight of Jonathan Sanchez came up as well, and they agreed that he's been about as bad as possible since coming to the Royals. Things wrapped up by talking about upcoming all star events and there's an interview that Mike did with Craig Brown (@RoyalsAuthority) of Royals Review (formerly Royals Authority) to talk about the Royals blogosphere, Royals in contention and the fans' reactions and the Baseball Prospectus event. Tickets to the BP event are still available http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17278 **Note quality a little off from normal.
Jeff Herr, Troy Olsen and Jeff Logan took over the hosting duties while Michael Engel and Chris Kamler were out on assignment. They were joined on the phone by Betty Caywood-Bushman and Monte Moore, the original announcers of the KC A's. We then talked about the Brewers series, the minor leagues, the T-Bones and the upcoming Royals Series. We then talked about the recent moves for the Royals. Next Week We have Danny Jackson and Greg Pryor in studio. Join us every Thursday, 6-7pm on ESPN 1510.
