The U.S. has spent the last 70 years making massive investments in basic and applied research. Government funding of research started in World War II driven by the needs of the military for weapon systems to defeat Germany and Japan. Post WWII the responsibility for investing in research split between agencies focused on weapons development and space exploration (being completely customer-driven) and other agencies charted to fund basic and applied research in science and medicine (being driven by peer-review.)
European Explorers kicked off globalization during the Age of Discovery as they ventured to find a see route to India and circumnavigate the globe. This was followed by the first wave of globalization from 1870 to 1914. Post WWII, the US led the establishment of a new financial order which culminated in China joining the WTO in December 2001.
Inside Strategic Coach: Connecting Entrepreneurs With What Really Matters
Are you prepared for the biggest economic shift in 80 years? In this episode, Dan Sullivan reveals how the new global tariff landscape creates unprecedented opportunities for agile entrepreneurs. Learn why the post-WWII economic order is over, how to adapt your business model, and why being alert, curious, and resourceful is the secret to success in this emerging era. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episode: The real history behind today's tariffs—and why it matters for your business. How WWII transformed the U.S. economy into a global powerhouse. Why the U.S. dollar leads world trade (and why that's changing). Why the U.S. Navy started protecting trade routes around the world.Five critical strategies every entrepreneur must adopt now.A simple framework to help clients regain confidence in uncertain times. Why China faces unprecedented challenges in this new era. Show Notes: On April 3, the U.S. announced tariffs of 10% for most countries, with higher rates for nations with significant trade imbalances. Post-WWII, the U.S. economy was self-sufficient, yet other countries charged tariffs on U.S. goods while enjoying tariff-free access to American markets. One-sided tariffs led American corporations to offshore factories, costing U.S. jobs and prosperity. Trump's tariffs are a negotiation tactic to reset unfair trade terms and bring manufacturing back to the U.S. China's current trade practices make it the primary target of aggressive tariffs (now 125%). U.S. companies abroad face tariffs unless they relocate production home—creating a surge in domestic opportunities for entrepreneurs. You want to be the buyer in every negotiation. The buyer is the one who can walk away from the table. The United States is the best place to sell a product created anywhere in the world because it has the most customers. Tariffs aren't about fairness. They're about trade. Entrepreneurs are skilled at responding very quickly to new dangers and new opportunities and developing new strengths in the process. Global supply chains are fracturing, forcing businesses to source locally and regionally. During uncertain times, people feel as though they've lost their future. BONUS: The Power of TWI in Transforming Supervisory Skills and Software Leadership With Hugh Alley In this BONUS episode, we delve into how Training Within Industry (TWI) principles can revolutionize leadership and supervision, and those principles can be adapted to the software industry. Hugh Alley, industrial engineer, author of The TWI Memory Jogger, and seasoned consultant, brings invaluable insights on how adapting these timeless methods can enhance team cohesion, productivity, and job satisfaction. From Toxic Workplaces to Transformative Solutions "When I first saw supervisors shouting in the workplace, I knew there had to be a better way." Hugh's journey began in the high-stress world of manufacturing where ineffective leadership was the norm. His turning point came when he discovered TWI, which shifted a company from zero employee suggestions to implementing 2-3 improvements per week. He shares the importance of recognizing poor patterns and seeking practical solutions that lead to lasting change. "A key insight? The power of TWI isn't just in theory; it creates immediate, real-world results." The Historic Power of TWI: Lessons from World-War II "We learned that repetition is essential for true skill mastery." Hugh recounts the origins of TWI during WWII when the U.S. War Manpower Commission had to quickly upskill the workforce and develop leaders. He highlights the drastic improvement in training time for complex tasks, such as lens grinding, reduced from five years to just five days. This approach emphasized breaking tasks into micro-skills and practicing them repeatedly. "The secret to learning is practice—not just once, but deliberately and consistently." Core Managerial Responsibilities: Mission and People "If you don't look after your people, they'll leave." Hugh elaborates on two often-overlooked managerial duties: achieving the mission and caring for the team. In software projects, where meeting deadlines becomes paramount, leaders may overlook their teams' well-being. He shares a case where training in TWI's Job Relations (JR) module reduced turnover from 60% to 10%, proving that attention to people directly impacts results. "Feedback isn't optional—it's the backbone of a motivated team." The Five Essential Supervisory Skills "Getting people up to speed isn't luck; it's skill." Hugh discusses the five essential skills for supervisors outlined in TWI: giving instructions, fostering performance, improving methods, setting priorities, and listening. These skills ensure that new team members integrate smoothly and that ongoing work aligns with team goals. For software teams, he emphasizes that structured training can prevent future issues and enhance productivity. "Supervisory success is built on clear guidance and active listening." Why TWI Gets Overlooked and How to Revitalize It "We don't need heroes; we need high-functioning teams." Post-WWII, TWI lost momentum as it was seen as outdated, and the culture shifted toward individual heroics in the workplace. Hugh argues that today's teams thrive not on isolated brilliance but on collective efficiency and shared learning. "Our challenge today is to reclaim TWI's structured approach for consistent team performance." Addressing Performance Issues with TWI "Inspection isn't just watching; it's understanding and acting." Hugh explains how the Job Relations module of TWI can be adapted for software teams to address performance issues. He shares practical steps for leaders to approach these conversations constructively, improving team trust and transparency. "Proactive feedback, rooted in observation, fuels team growth." Application for Scrum Masters and Agile Leaders "Basic certifications don't cover these leadership essentials." Hugh talks about how Scrum Masters can leverage the insights from his book, The TWI Memory Jogger, to build vital supervisory skills that foster better team dynamics and output. He emphasizes the importance of continuous learning beyond basic training to handle real-world challenges effectively. "To be truly effective, Scrum Masters must master supervisory fundamentals." The Art of Listening in Leadership "Respect starts with truly hearing your team." Hugh shares a story about a colleague named Angie, illustrating how active listening can uncover underlying issues affecting performance. He discusses how TWI encourages leaders to move beyond surface-level interactions and engage meaningfully with their teams. "Listening is the gateway to trust and respect in leadership." Improving Methods: A Supervisor's Guide "Ask better questions, get better answers." For supervisors and Agile Coaches, Hugh introduces six reflective questions that improve work methods. He explains how applying these questions can enhance retrospective meetings and process improvements in software teams, reinforcing TWI's impact on continuous improvement. "Improvement begins when you challenge every assumption and ask the right questions." TWI's Influence on Team Cohesion and Values Hugh shares a success story from his book where TWI principles transformed team unity. He shows how applying these principles nurtures an environment of mutual respect and shared responsibility. "True cohesion comes from shared learning and collective effort." Hugh encourages listeners to explore TWI resources and start with practical application in their teams. For those eager to dive deeper, his books Becoming the Supervisor and The TWI Memory Jogger offer accessible entry points to mastering these crucial skills. About Hugh Alley Hugh Alley is an industrial engineer, author, and consultant specializing in continuous improvement and supervisory skills. He has led multiple manufacturing firms and trained over 1,000 front-line leaders, authoring two books on effective supervision. Dr. Tara McCormack discusses international politics and how she believes America remains the hegemonic power with it's control becoming ever more direct and overt, especially militarily. We are entering a more multipolar world, for which Syria was a watershed moment, but it will take some time. In today's episode we delve into the remarkable rise of supernatural phenomena in post-World War II Germany, a period marked by the extraordinary popularity of faith healers like Bruno Gröning and a wave of witchcraft accusations. Joining us is Monica Black, the acclaimed historian and author of ‘A Demon-Haunted Land: Witches, Wonder Doctors, and the Ghosts of the Past in Post-WWII Germany'. Monica offers a compelling exploration of how a nation, grappling with the aftermath of war and the Holocaust, turned to supernatural beliefs and practices to cope with its collective trauma. In the wake of the war, Germany saw a resurgence of messianic figures and mystical healers drawing enormous crowds, prayer groups conducting exorcisms, and widespread sightings of the Virgin Mary. This period also witnessed a startling number of witchcraft accusations as neighbours turned against each other in a climate of pervasive fear and suspicion. Monica Black unpacks these phenomena, arguing that they were deeply intertwined with the nation's unaddressed guilt and the haunting silence over its recent atrocities. Our discussion highlights how these supernatural obsessions reveal a darker, more troubled side of Germany's postwar recovery, often overshadowed by narratives of economic resurgence and democratic rebirth. Monica's insights, drawn from previously unpublished archival sources, paint a vivid picture of a society struggling with profound moral and spiritual disquiet. This episode is a deep dive into the shadow history of postwar Germany, offering a fresh perspective on the emotional and psychological toll of trying to bury a painful and horrific legacy. My Special Guest Is Monica Black Monica Black is a historian of modern Europe. Her research focuses on the cultural and social history of Germany, with an emphasis on the era of the World Wars and the decades immediately after 1945. Much of her work has concerned how National Socialism functioned in daily life, and what happened to it after 1945. She is a Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), where she has been a faculty member in the history department since 2010. From 2021 to 2023, she served as associate director of the UT Humanities Center. Earlier in her career, she taught at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and at the University of Virginia. Since 2019, she has been the editor of the journal Central European History (Twitter: @CentralEuropean). She also serve as an associate review editor for the American Historical Review and served from 2016 - 2021 as a member of the editorial board of German Studies Review. In 2022, she joined the German Studies Association's executive board. In 2023, she was named to the advisory board of the George L. Mosse Series in the History of Culture, Sexuality, and Ideas (University of Wisconsin Press). In 2014, she was awarded the Berlin Prize by the American Academy in Berlin. She has been a fellow of the Shelby Cullom Davis Center at Princeton University and the American Council of Learned Societies and the National Endowment for the Humanities have supported her research. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Uncovers the lesser-known spiritual and psychological undercurrents of a nation in turmoil, and how these forces shaped the postwar German experience. 2. Discover more about the extraordinary popularity of faith healers like Bruno Gröning. As the world marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the historic moment is also remembered as a catalyst for the turning of economic tides. A series of post-war events and decisions such as the Bretton Woods Conference heralded a new era for economic cooperation and financial order. We also look at the United States' role in rehabilitating Europe with its Marshall Plan: aid worth an estimated $140 billion in today's money.

From its heyday in the Victorian era, the fortunes of Dundee declined as traditional industries were lost and employment became hard to find. We look at the post-war years and the efforts that were made to find success in light engineering. While there were many successes these too were doomed to failure and towards the end of the 20th C the city once again found itself on its uppers. However, Dundee is not known as the "City of Discovery" without reason. With typical resilience and optimism the city is rediscovering itself as a cultural centre and tourist destination with its mega-million pound Waterfront Regeneration Project, including the flagship V&A museum.

Chapter 1 What's Savage Continent Book by Keith LoweSavage Continent is a book written by Keith Lowe and published in 2012. The book offers a comprehensive account of Europe in the aftermath of World War II. It focuses on the period from 1944 to 1949, exploring the physical, political, and psychological ruins left behind by the war. Lowe examines the deep divisions, violence, and chaos that plagued the continent during this time, as countries and communities struggled to rebuild while dealing with the aftermath of Nazi occupation, mass displacements, ethnic cleansing, and vengeful violence. Savage Continent sheds light on lesser-known aspects of the post-war era and offers a poignant analysis of the long-lasting effects of war on societies and individuals.Chapter 2 Is Savage Continent Book A Good BookOpinions on whether a book is good can vary greatly depending on individual tastes and interests. However, "Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II" by Keith Lowe is generally well-regarded by both critics and readers. The book offers a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the immediate aftermath of World War II in Europe, focusing on the social, political, and cultural consequences of the conflict. It delves into the widespread violence, displacement, and chaos experienced by the continent during this period. Many readers appreciate Lowe's thorough research, engaging writing style, and ability to unveil lesser-known stories and perspectives. However, it is important to note that the book's content can be quite graphic and disturbing, as it deals with the atrocities committed during the war and its aftermath. If you have a particular interest in this historical period and can handle graphic descriptions, "Savage Continent" is likely to be an informative and thought-provoking read.Chapter 3 Savage Continent Book by Keith Lowe Summary"Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II" is a book by Keith Lowe that examines the continent's tumultuous period between 1944 and 1950, immediately following the end of World War II. The book offers a comprehensive and often shocking account of the destruction, violence, and chaos that characterized the post-war era in Europe.Lowe begins by highlighting the immense devastation caused by the war, from the physical destruction of cities and infrastructure to the loss of life and displacement of millions. He explores the psychological and emotional trauma suffered by not only soldiers but also civilians who had endured years of occupation, bombings, and forced labor. The book delves into topics such as the mass rape and sexual violence inflicted upon women, the vengeful acts committed by both victorious and defeated nations, and the revenge taken against collaborators and perceived enemies. Lowe also examines the displacement and forced migration of millions of people, the challenge of rebuilding shattered economies and societies, and the rise of political extremism and nationalist movements. While Savage Continent paints a bleak picture of post-war Europe, it also highlights acts of compassion, solidarity, and resilience in the face of immense hardship. Lowe explores how individuals and communities rebuilt their lives, the efforts made to establish new systems of governance, and the beginning of the process of reconciliation between former enemies.Overall, "Savage Continent" offers a detailed and often disturbing account of the harsh reality faced by Europeans in the aftermath of World War II. It challenges many commonly held beliefs about the immediate post-war years and provides a deeper understanding of this complex period in European history. Chapter 4 Savage Continent Book...

This episode features excerpts of an interview with attorney Claude R. Wheatly, Jr. from Beaufort County. Wheatly was licensed to practice law in 1941 but postponed his legal career to enlist in the U.S. Army after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor later that year. Post WWII, he returned to Beaufort County where he earned recognition and praise as a general practitioner for over 70 years. In the interview, Wheatly gives advice to new attorneys and shares stories about his life and career which included an account of being held at gunpoint by a disgruntled client. The interview was conducted by attorney James T. Cheatham in 2005 for the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism."Just because your opponents may be experienced trial lawyers and you are a beginner, don't let that frighten you," said Wheatly on the podcast. "Look into the facts of the case. Because they are experienced does not mean they are right." This interview is part of the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism's Historic Video Series. A video of this interview can be found on the NCcourts YouTube channel.

Security Expert Lee Slusher discusses the state of Pax Americana and how the post-WWII status quo is failing. The West's foray into Ukraine is a fool's errand and it's likely we've reached peak NATO and EU. He analyzes the recent Prigozhin incident and evaluates Russian power. Lee lived and worked in Taiwan and believes the U.S. no longer has the capability to defend Taiwan. He feels countries are making concrete steps toward multipolarity. In celebration of Women's History Month and International Women's day, we're talking about women's increased role in a heavily male-dominated industry. Rebekah Fisher from CRG Automation is interviewed by MFG Tribe's own Nancy Bell to discuss her leadership experience and career highlights.Rebekah is one of the leading actors in CRG's partnership with the DoD to decommission Post-WWII chemical warheads safely and swiftly by 2023. With a custom-designed automated facility, they devised a method to disarm and safely dispose of these warheads before the deadline in 2023. As a female in a male space, Rebekah brings skills suited to her role, mainly listening to a client to discover the best solution. With open coordination, her team can better assess and solve their clients' problems in more unique and efficient ways than before. With the newer generation entering the workforce, a bridge is being created between the older and younger workers in manufacturing, finding answers to industrial quandaries. Women help to serve as that bridge, and there has been a wider acceptance in both young and older men. The fresh perspective that millennials bring is changing the game unlike ever before.Women have the social advantage of coming in with a smile and bringing confidence to a situation. Knowing how to read a situation, when to back off, and when to have your voice heard is also essential. Remember that your personal life doesn't have to take a backseat, and you don't have to apologize for everything.#industrial #womenatwork #womenshistorymonth __________Subscribe For More Video Content :https://www.youtube.com/kylemilan__________Say Hi on Social:LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylemilan/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kylejmilanFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/KyleJMilan/__________Connect For Business:MFG Tribe: https://mfgtribe.comMFG Tribe on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/mfgtribe/Technical Sales University: https://training.technicalsalesu.com/enroll

Mickey opens this week's program in conversation with Aaron Good; they examine the post-WWII U.S. rise to global dominance, and how that underlies many of our current events, notably the Russia-Ukraine-NATO conflict. In the second half of the show, Eleanor Goldfield speaks with Chris Garaffa about the prospects for stronger net-neutrality protections in the months ahead, as well as the broader issue of how to "democratize the internet." Aaron Good is the author of "American Exception: Empire and the Deep State," a new book from Skyhorse Publishing. He also hosts a podcast titled "American Exception." He holds a Ph.D from Temple University. In the tradition of Peter Dale Scott, Aaron's writing emphasizes the role of a 'deep state' (a powerful, secretive, unelected governing force) in history. Chris Garaffa is co-host of the Covert Action Bulletin podcast, and is a frequent radio guest on issues of technology and surveillance. The Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895 makes China cede Taiwan and the Peng-hu Islands to Japan in perpetuity. Tokyo's first attempt at colonialism is a great success as it establishes order, eradicating disease, building infrastructure, and creating a modern economy. Taiwan soon becomes the most-advanced place in East Asia outside Japan itself. Post WWII, Taiwan is handed over to China, but Chiang Kai-Shek is defeated by Mao and he flees to Taiwan and is seated in the UN Security Council as ROC (Republic of China). Chiang surrounds himself with Economists and Technocrats to build a strong Taiwan economy and his son, CCK continues the same trajectory, making Taiwan a democracy in the process. Tensions between the PRC and ROC restart after President Xi's 2017 19th Party Congress report sets a deadline for reunification by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the Communist rule in Mainland China.
Pastor Jim continues telling the story of the history of Cornerstone with Pastor Scott, reflecting on a Post-WWII era characterized by incredible growth and missionary sending while also plagued by ongoing social and racial tensions.
With the recent passing of Jean-Luc Godard, we look at three French New Wave heist films: Shoot the Piano Player, Band of Outsiders and Le Doulos. We start with a very cursory explanation of the French New Wave, Cahiers du Cinema and the influence of Post WWII gangster films, what we would later call film noir: private eyes, trench coats and fedoras, femmes fatale, chiascuro lighting and so on. (Apologies to all my former film professor for some very brief oversimplifications.) Shoot the Piano Player (1960) was Truffaut's second film after The 400 Blows. It's the story of a piano man with a dark secret, his ne'er-do-brothers, some gangsters and the bar maid that has a crush on the piano man and who also knows his secret. Plenty of humor in this often-dark movie. Band of Outsiders (1964) is often called Godard's most accessible film, thanks to its straightforward plot, humor and pop references. Two guys and a girl plan to steal a pile of cash from the villa where the girl Odile (Anna Karina) lives nearly. There's also the burgeoning love triangle between Odile and the two guys, Franz and Arthur. And a lot of silliness before the robbery, where, of course, things go wrong. Le Doulos (1962) was one of many crime films made by Jean-Pierre Melville, who is sometimes called “The Godfather of the French New Wave” since he was making films before the Cahiers critics and mentored some of them along the way. Le Doulos was the slang term for a police informant and the question is the film is just who was tipped off the police to the heist being pulled by Maurice and Remy? Was it Silien, the film's trench coat and fedora wearing gangster, played by perennial French New Wave star Jean-Paul Belmondo? Or was it someone else? You need a score card to keep track of the twists and turns, as the body count grows throughout the picture. There are of course many other heist films worth checking out. These three are currently streaming on the Criterion Channel and HBO Max and Prime also have a number of French New Wave classics. We wanted to talk about Rififi, but it's not currently streaming anywhere, so we're saving that for another day. The Plot is a co-production of Odessa Steps Magazine and The When It Was Cool Network.
Post WWII, C.P. Snow warned that American universities & politics will become dominated by people with no standards to measure the success or failures of their theories. The scientists and engineers will be forced out by the Humanities Department.
Post WWII in Berlin, Russia engaged in one of its many and continuing attempts to expand its land, power and influence by harming millions of others. The US responded with the heroic and surprisingly successful Berlin Airlift, saving Berlin from the vengeful grip of Joseph Stalin. At the same time, then US Army pilot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Halvorsen (Gary Halvorsen) became famnous for being the Candy Comber, delighting and encouraging the children, their parents and all of Berlin by “bombing” the hungry, deprived children of Berlin with tons of candy. This sequence of events had started with the Allied bombing of Berlin during the war, moved to the Soviet post war aggression, then onto the Airlift, next to the Candy Bombing, to, eventually, freedom for all Germans. Each step played a critical part. Recently the legend of the Candy Bomber was honored when a modern group brought in critical supplies to beleaguered Ukraine in the name of the Candy Bomber. Today, each of us, in our own way, can be a Candy Bomber, bringing delight and hope to anyone or any group in our lives. What is your way? Evan Taparata is a postdoctoral fellow at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University. Evan is currently authoring his latest book “State of Refuge: The Origins of Refugee Law and Policy in the United States”. In this edition, he explores the origins of American refugee law in the years after World War II and how immigration policy in the past and present has centered around the interests of the U.S. settler state. So today we discuss its historical implications, and how sentiments around settlement have developed throughout the 20th century.
The League of Nations was formed post WWI to maintain World peace. During the course of WWII, the United Nations was conceived as the new global body to maintain peace. However, as the Cold War ensued, the US and its western allies formed NATO and the Soviet Union retaliated with the creation of the Warsaw Pact. The newly independent nations formed the Non-Aligned Movement to have a voice on the global stage.

Darkness Radio enters A Demon-Haunted Land: Witches, Wonder Doctors, and the Ghosts of the Past in Post WWII Germany with guest Monica Black Today the boys take a look at a revelatory counter-history of postwar Germany, not as a reborn democracy but as a nation convulsed by apocalyptic visions, witchcraft trials, and supernatural obsessions. In the aftermath of World War II, a succession of mass supernatural events swept through a war-torn Germany. As millions were afflicted by a host of seemingly incurable maladies (including blindness and paralysis), waves of apocalyptic rumors crashed over the land. A messianic faith healer rose to extraordinary fame, prayer groups performed exorcisms, and enormous crowds traveled to witness apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Most strikingly, scores of people accused their neighbors of witchcraft and found themselves in turn hauled into court on charges of defamation, assault, and even murder. What linked these events, in the wake of an annihilationist war and the Holocaust, was a widespread preoccupation with evil. “…social democracy recognizes the need for the state to put some band-aids on some sores, right? Democratic socialism comes along and says, that doesn't work. That's not enough. That really, that we need to change society institutionally.”—big mike Listen: iTunes, Spotify, Mixcloud | Transcript In this episode: 00:00 A brief recap of last episode: how can the uprising of communism and fascism in the 20th century be seen as responses to the crises of capitalism? 05:26 Why is it important for us to think about the history of the Cold War, and how we think about the history of the Cold War (and beforehand)? Why was the Russian Revolution such a massive, world-historical event? 12:50 How does the Western response to the Russian Revolution (and the ensuing civil war) shape the trajectory of Soviet communism towards state power? How does the need to accumulate capital lead to a communism that, when lived on the ground, is essentially like fascism? 26:14 How does the brief, tenuous alliance between the Soviet Union and the U.S. during World War II collapse into the Cold War? Post-WWII, how and why do perceptions form, at least in Northern and Western Europe, of communism as more viable and powerful than capitalism, a perception immensely foreign to us in the U.S.? How does this lead to the rise of social democracy, or at least social democratic party and policy, in Europe? 35:26 What's social democracy, and how does it differ from ‘ameliorated capitalism'? How is the role of charities in ameliorated capitalism similar to the role of the state in social democracy? 39:29 What is the move that takes us from social democracy to democratic socialism? Why is a fundamental restructuring and redistribution of resources necessary to democratic socialism, and what are some historical examples of this? 46:31 If America is heading towards further and further privatization, how does that create problems over who has the power to make decisions over economic and political life? How do those tensions over equality of power also exist in a democratic socialist society in which the state has control over resources and distribution? 56:26 If we're going to have the structural changes needed to face our crises and still respect everyone's autonomy? How will this require changes in the way we live, and the way we think about how we live?
