What the Riff?!?
1971 - May: Rod Stewart "Every Picture Tells a Story"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 34:16

Every Picture Tells a Story is a great name for Rod Stewart's third solo studio album.  The songs consist of solid storytelling, using mixture of original  and cover tracks to paint a mosaic of life, love, and loss.  This album would mark the transition of Stewart from a solid rock vocalist to an A-list performer.  Every Picture Tells a Story hit the top of the album charts in both the US and the UK, and its blend of rock, blues, and folk music would have a staying power over the decades. Supposedly the album was compiled on a shoestring budget, and consists of a number of songs paired with extended jams.Stewart compiled this album during his tenure as front man for the Faces, and all five members of that group appear on the album.  Because of contractual obligations at the time, the personnel listing on each track is a bit vague, but it is possible that all five members were on the recording of "(I Know) I'm Losing You."  The first single released from the album was "Reason to Believe," which was a cover of Tim Hardin's 1966 song.  But the B-side of that album would be the one that would cause Rod Stewart to become a breakthrough success.  That song, written by Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton, was "Maggie May."  The album would top the charts, and would be a noticeable success on the year-end charts of the Billboard 200 albums in 1971 (#35) and 1972 (#65), while taking the number 2 spot for the UK album charts in 1971.  Not bad for a soccer player who wasn't able to go pro!Rob brings us the bluesy album for this week's podcast. (I Know) I'm Losing YouThis Motown hit originally recorded by The Temptations in 1966 is a lament of a relationship going bad.  Stewart's cover went to number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Motown rock group Rare Earth had a cover of this song a year earlier in 1970.  Rod Stewart has several members of the Faces playing on this track. That's Alright/Amazing GraceAnother outstanding cover, this one is of the debut single from Elvis Presley in 1954.  However, the original goes back to blues singer Arthur Crudup in 1946.  But even that long time period is dwarfed by the pairing of the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace" which dates back to 1772.  This deep cut shows some of the diversity of the album.  Every Picture Tells a StoryThe lead-off and title track to the album was an original co-written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood.  The lyrics are told from the perspective of a musician on tour who finds adventure with women in multiple cities before returning home to think back on his travels.  The lyrics are more free-form in this song, not following a consistent pattern of rhymes. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television comedy "Green Acres"This sit-com featuring city dwellers who move to the country went off the air this month in 1971. STAFF PICKS:Don't Pull Your Love by Hamilton, Joe Frank & ReynoldsBruce starts out the staff picks with a song often attributed to Elvis Presley.  After performing with the T-Bones and having an instrumental hit with the song "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" based on a popular jingle from an Alka-Seltzer TV commercial, this group went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Don't Pull Your Love."It's Too Late by Carole KingLynch brings us a song with music by Carole King and lyrics penned by songwriter Toni Stern.  This breakup song is considered to be a feminist song by many, given that the woman is breaking up with the man.  Stern completed the lyrics in a single day after her breakup with fellow singer songwriter James Taylor.  This track would top the Billboard Hot 100, and would win the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1972.Charity Ball by FannyWayne's staff pick is the single release and title track from Fanny's second studio album.  Fanny was one of the first all-female rock bands playing their own instruments, and the first to record an entire album.  They got their start in Sacramento after sisters June and Jean Millington (guitar and bass) moved there from the Philippines.  The group was completed with Nickey Barclay on keyboards and Alice de Buhr on drums. If Not for You by Olivia Newton JohnRob features a cover originally penned by Bob Dylan.  Olivia Newton John would make this her first international release and her breakthrough song.  Her cover closely follows George Harrison's cover, including prominent use of the slide guitar.  Olivia Newton John took this track to number 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and to number 7 on the UK singles chart. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Milky Way by Weather ReportThis Avant-garde jazz instrumental takes us out of this week's podcast.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Dr. Tarun “T-Bone” Agarwal is here today. T-Bone is a dentist, a podcast host, and passionate about helping other dentists turn their practice into a business. In this episode, we talk about the importance of planning ahead of time for the following year and writing down your goals and aspirations. T-Bone shares his wisdom from over 20 years experience and building a practice from scratch. We talk about the importance of clarity, and T-Bone shares the three key focus areas of patients, team, and clinical skills to go further faster. He shares tips on helping your team grow and you scale by learning to replace yourself. This episode is packed with so much knowledge that we had to split it up in two parts. Enjoy! You can find T-Bone here: T-Bone Speaks T-Bone Speaks Dentistry Podcast 3D-Dentists Tarun Agarwal on LinkedIn Tarun Agarwal on Instagram Raleigh Dental Arts   Show Notes:   [02:51] T-Bone lost his father-in-law last year and it put a damper on the year. They still grew, but it wasn't his best year. [03:22] The first step to moving forward is reflecting on the past. [03:39] T-Bone didn't set goals or plan out his 2018. He feels that this lack of planning showed. [03:55] He's actually a big believer in sitting down and writing out goals. This year he went to a seminar about planning out your goals for the year. [04:35] T-Bone was here in town for the seminar and decided to stop by the office for the podcast. [04:57] It's not only important to write out your goals. It's important to share your goals and have accountability. [05:14] Last week Sully and his office took half a day to recap what has happened in the past year of 2018. [05:50] It's important for the owner of the business to recap before he recaps with the team. [07:53] It's a good idea to map out what you are going to say before you discuss it with your team. [09:14] For T-Bone, 2018 was a non clarity year. If you don't have clarity you're going to be in trouble. [10:33] T-Bone makes the same resolution every year. That is to eat healthy and lose weight. [10:58] He feels that the best time to plan for the following year is in September and October, so that you really have time to set the stage. [14:10] To get further faster, you have to focus on your patients. You have to focus on your team. You have to focus on your clinical skills. [14:42] With patients you have to address their time, their fears, and their money. [15:12] Do more in one visit, make your dentistry last longer, and make appointments more convenient. [15:42] T-Bone's office is going to go to a 7:00 to 7:00 schedule. [18:26] Do something different to be there for the patients. [19:13] The easiest way to address fear is to offer sedation in your practice. Nitrous Oxide, oral sedation, or more advanced sedation. [22:47] Good old-fashioned TLC also helps address fear. [23:05] Money boils down to price vs affordability. [25:02] Affordability is about offering payment plans versus the price of the procedures. [25:48] Step two is addressing your team and how you lead your team. [26:17] Teach your team to learn how to replace themselves. Teach your team to know the score. Teach your team to own the space. [26:38] Replacing yourself is about personal growth. If you train a replacement, you are able to move up. [32:19] When you understand what's going on in your team members lives, then you can formulate a plan with those person. [33:18] Just listen and avoid the advice monster. [34:03] Ask questions to get them to get to your advice. [37:56] Number two is about knowing the score. Be specific with your team members about their role and how you want them to grow. [41:28] Ease people into new roles. [45:06] Owning your space is about knowing everything that happens in your operatory. [46:46] People want ownership and leadership. Make certain jobs certain people's responsibilities. [47:30] Teach people to replace themselves, so they can advance. Know the score and specific things about your part of the practice. Teach people to own their space. [50:31] Superstars get different treatment but everyone gets treated fairly. [50:49] Clinical diversity. To get further faster focus on three areas of your professional life. [51:31] We have to make a progression beyond dental school dentistry. [52:02] The top five services are perio, hygiene, restorations, extractions, and endo. A practice is moved to a level two practice by implementing the bottom 5 procedures which are socket grafting, implants, ortho, sleep, and sedation. [52:54] Implement the bottom five procedures at a high level. [54:23] T-Bones goal for 2020 is to replace himself and only do the procedures he wants to do. [56:39] It's so critical for young dentists to start to write down their goals. [59:26] It's never too late to get started and clarify your goals. [01:00:50] Learning is key and it should never stop.   As always thanks so much for listening! If you like the show we would love for you to review the show on iTunes as well as spread the word! The son of guitarist Tommy Tedesco pays tribute to his late father and a core group of studio musicians who played on some of the biggest hits of the 1960s and '70s, including "California Girls" and "Mrs. Robinson. The Wrecking Crew was a group of studio musicians in Los Angeles in the 1960s who played on hits for the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sonny and Cher, Jan & Dean, The Monkees, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Mamas and Papas, Tijuana Brass, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Rivers and were Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. The amount of work that they were involved in was tremendous.  They were also involved in groups that I like to call the Milli Vanillis of the day. A producer would get the guys in and lay down some instrumental tracks. If it became a hit, they would record an album and put a group together to go on the road. This happened many times with groups like the Marketts, Routers, and T-Bones. The next day they would do the same thing and call it another name. Same musicians, but different group name.

Greetings Earthlings. We come in peace.  To watch Grease.  Grease Two.  Here you will hear recorded evidence of our experience. That’s Jim, Maddy, and me. Instead of the traditional narrative I’ve used to introduce podcasts, I thought I’d give you various [thoughts] and “quotes” from the experience. [Have you heard about the fan theory that Sandy was in a coma throughout the entirety of Grease and at the very end died?  It’s a thing.  The writer of the musical, Jim Jacobs, disputed it…here. So I suppose it’s untrue.  But it’s still a compelling theory.] [Jim, a girl for all seasons, ah-ah-ahhh…ah-ah-ahh…ah-ah-ahh.] “In biker heaven, Cool Rider and Stephanie get to be together in matching jackets.” [There is a stage adaptation of Grease 2.  I think I wanna see it.] [The song from the rock-a-hula luau, which I always sing as, “hock a loogie luau,” sounds, looks, and feels like one of those horrid Kidsongs videos from about 10 years ago.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re probably better off leaving well enough alone.] “Everything is better with twins.” “Who doesn’t want a pool of enchantment?” “How do we rhyme together?  Oh good…feather.” “Does pause EVER work?” [Ultimately, I believe the entire thesis of Grease 2 is summed up in the diner scene with Michael and Stephanie talking about hamburgers and Hamlet.  Stephanie says, “You know I figured out what Hamlet’s big problem is.”  She then gets immediately side-tracked by the fact that the diner never puts ketchup on the hamburger.  “How can you eat a hamburger with no ketchup?”  She’s absolutely right. “Shoot that over here.”  Having fixed the hamburger situation, she hits us with this spot-on, low-brow, assessment of Hamlet.  And me, which is why I now love the movie. “You know what his problem is?  No laughs.  The guy’s gotta lighten up, right?”] I mean, right!? Anyway, today we present to you the thrilling and hilarious conclusion of our time spent with the T-Bones, Pink Ladies, et al, “Matching Jackets in Biker Heaven (Grease Two, pt 3).” Oh…music.  It’s all Beatles today. “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” and “Blackbird.”  Two of my favorites, and appropriate for this anniversary which is certainly founded in anger, sadness, and tragedy but, as is always the case if we allow it, transformed into a vessel of healing, hope, and love. God, or whatever it is you place your faith, bless you all. -G
