Thanks to the movie, The Raiders of the Lost Ark, most people have heard of the Ark of the Covenant, and yet do we understand its central role in Old Testament worship? Today, we'll unpack Exodus 25 teachings on the tabernacle and the ark, the showbread and the lampstand. Join us for this important study on these important topics!   DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Verse 9 contains the first time the term “tabernacle” is used. When not being used of the official tabernacle, how also could this word be used? What did the podcast explain is the idea behind the term “tabernacle”? How is it sometimes used as a verb? 2.    What was the specific dimensions of the tabernacle tent? What in our world is about that same size? Is this smaller than you were expecting? 3.    In verse 2, what was supposed to prompt the people to donate supplies towards the construction of this tabernacle complex? In regard to their contributions, what had to happen in Exodus 36:5? What does this tell us about the people's heart to be involved with the Lord's work? 4.    Of all the items that were built for the tabernacle, why was the ark listed first? What were the dimensions of this ark? Does this size surprise you? How about it's weight, what did it weigh and how was it moved around? How does this help us understand why Uzzah died when he touched the ark in 2nd Samuel 6:6-7? 5.    What was special about the lid of the ark? What was to take place there on the Day of Atonement? It's often called “The Mercy Seat” but it can also be called “The Atonement Cover”. Which do you prefer and why?  6.    Why did the podcast suggest that the golden cherubim (on top of the ark) did not violate the 2nd Commandment to make no graven images? What did the podcast suggest that these golden cherubim teach us? How? 7.    The podcast explained that the Hebrew term for “cover” is “Kaphar”, which is also the root word for “atonement”. Kaphar was used in Genesis 6:14 when the Lord had Noah make his ark out of wood that was covered (kaphar) with tar. What did the High Priest do at the ark once a year on the Day of Atonement? What does this signify? How does this help us understand the covering (or the atonement) that we have in Christ's blood? 8.    Verse 23-30 is talking about the showbread. What is it also called in verse 30? How does verse 30 help us understand the showbread was to signify? According to Leviticus 24:5-9, how often was the showbread to be made? Who would eat the old showbread? 9.    How does the showbread point us to Jesus, who calls Himself the Bread of Life in John 6:32-35? 10.    The golden lampstand is described in verses 31 to 40. Where was this placed and what was it for? According to Exodus 27:20-21, who was to keep this lamp burning? How is Jesus the fulfillment of this lamp in John 8:12?  11.    How does the tabernacle teach us that God's presence is not automatic? Why would the Lord want to teach this lesson to the people? What needs to happen to us to have eternal fellowship with Him? 12.    How does this whole chapter help us understand the perfect tabernacle and atonement offering of Jesus in Hebrews 9:11-12?  Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Mike and Kenny discuss the wonderful film and spot faith elements reflected in Titus Kaphar's feature length directorial and screenwriting debut. Included in the episode is an indepth conversation with Titus Kaphar. Based on Kaphar's life, Exhibing Forgiveness examines the need and difficulty many face in offering forgiveness. Titus Kaphar is a well known artist whose paintings and sculptures are highly sought after by private collectors and galleries. The forgiving process mirrors Kaphars understanding of art as a way to disrupt past narratives which breaks the power of past events in the present and future.  Faith Issues: The true nature, difficulty, and process of offering forgiveness.  When one withholds forgiveness, one allows the other to keep power over oneself. The healing that can come through replacing anger and resentfullness with forgiveness changes the narrative and arc of one's emotions, spirit, and life.

Sister Dennis speaks about symbols and the power of symbols to teach us deeper meanings and remind us of important things. She specifically talks about covenants being symbols and the symbols used in the ordinances we participate in to make covenants. She also covers garments and the symbols they are in our lives. She also reminds us that missions and marriage are not a requirement for going through the temple for our endowment. Anyone who is eighteen and feels they are ready should talk to their bishop about preparing. She ends her talk with her testimony of covenants and the power they have had in her life. “Baptism by immersion is the symbolic gate through which we enter into a covenant relationship with God. Being immersed in the water and coming up again is symbolic of the Savior's death and Resurrection to new life. As we are baptized, we symbolically die and are born again into the family of Christ and show we are willing to take His name upon us. We ourselves embody that covenant symbolism. In the New Testament we read, “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” With our baptism we symbolically put on Christ.” How do you strive to keep your baptismal covenant? “The garment of the holy priesthood is deeply symbolic and also points to the Savior. When Adam and Eve partook of the fruit and had to leave the Garden of Eden, they were given coats of skins as a covering for them. It is likely that an animal was sacrificed to make those coats of skins—symbolic of the Savior's own sacrifice for us. Kaphar is the basic Hebrew word for atonement, and one of its meanings is “to cover.” Our temple garment reminds us that the Savior and the blessings of His Atonement cover us throughout our lives. As we put on the garment of the holy priesthood each day, that beautiful symbol becomes a part of us.” If you are already endowed, how does this change the way you think about your garments? If you are not endowed, how does this change the way you think about and prepare for one day wearing them? This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 2024 edition of New Directors/New Films with Exhibiting Forgiveness director Titus Kaphar and lead actor André Holland. One of the contemporary art world's most important painters, Titus Kaphar creates powerful work that is multidisciplinary in nature and profound in historical meaning, often incorporating multiple layers and sculptural dimensions to his canvases. Kaphar brings the same sense of profoundly felt dynamism to his startlingly accomplished cinematic debut, Exhibiting Forgiveness, a wrenching work of emotional depth and visual flair starring the magnificent André Holland in one of the actor's greatest screen roles so far. Painter Tarrell Rodin (Holland) is a loving and grounded husband to singer Aisha (Andra Day) and father to young Jermaine (Daniel Berrier), but he's violently haunted by nightmares of his childhood. While preparing for a new gallery show, Tarrell finds his life upended by the sudden return of his father, La'Ron (John Earl Jelks). His mother, Joyce (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), has forgiven La'Ron for the abuse and addiction of their family's troubled past, but Tarrell cannot bring himself to do the same. While working on his large-scale canvases, Tarrell journeys to his past, wondering if he can alter the pain of his present. Kaphar's film—as provocative in its depiction of unresolvable familial crises as it is about the meaning and co-opting of Black voices in the contemporary art scene—wrestles with difficult, personal questions without settling on easy answers. The conversation was moderated by New Directors/New Films selection committee member Madeline Whittle.

Ep.147 features Titus Kaphar, an artist whose paintings, sculptures, and installations examine the history of representation by transforming its styles and mediums with formal innovations to emphasize the physicality and dimensionality of the canvas and materials themselves. His practice seeks to dislodge history from its status as the “past” in order to unearth its contemporary relevance, and to reveal something of what has been lost and to investigate the power of a rewritten history. Kaphar's commitment to social engagement has led him to move beyond traditional modes of artistic expression to establish NXTHVN, a new national arts model that empowers emerging artists and curators of color through education and access. Through intergenerational mentorship, professional development and cross-sector collaboration, NXTHVN accelerates professional careers in the arts. https://www.nxthvn.com/ Titus Kaphar (b. 1976, Kalamazoo, Michigan) lives and works in New Haven, CT. Kaphar received an MFA from the Yale School of Art and is a distinguished recipient of numerous prizes and awards including a 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, a 2018 Art for Justice Fund grant, a 2016 Robert R. Rauschenberg Artist as Activist grant, and a 2015 Creative Capital grant. Kaphar's work, Analogous Colors, was featured on the cover of the June 15, 2020 issue of TIME. Episode 1, "Revealing a Portrait," considers what the canon of art history is, and looks to a painting by contemporary African American artist Titus Kaphar to consider what it excludes. It also addresses the notion of “subject positions,” a way of acknowledging  who we are and how that influences what we see and how we look at art. Kaphar's work aims to make the invisible visible, and to reveal those figures that have been excluded from art history. His work highlights the Black experience, which has been overlooked in traditional art history courses, museums and other art institutions.    In his powerful 2017 TED Talk, Kaphar demonstrates to the audience how European art has erased Black people, and how those people might be brought to the forefront. He uncovers his slightly altered copy of a 17th century family portrait by Dutch artist Franz Hals. He then proceeds to white out the prominent figures with a mixture of white paint and linseed oil, eventually revealing a small Black boy in the group.   Kaphar notes that “Historically speaking, in research on these kinds of paintings, I can find out more about the lace that the woman is wearing in this painting -- the manufacturer of the lace -- than I can about this character here, about his dreams, about his hopes, about what he wanted out of life” (Kaphar, Can Art Amend History?). Episode 1 asks listeners to think about the role of history in art and the ways in which historical art is connected to contemporary culture. We must shine a light on the past to live more abundantly now. Historian Annette Gordon-Reed and painter Titus Kaphar lead us in an exploration of that as a public adventure in this conversation at the Citizen University annual conference. Gordon-Reed is the historian who introduced the world to Sally Hemings and the children she had with President Thomas Jefferson, and so realigned a primary chapter of the American story with the deeper, more complicated truth. Kaphar collapses historical timelines on canvas and created iconic images after the protests in Ferguson. Both are reckoning with history in order to repair the present. Titus Kaphar is an artist whose work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions from the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Seattle Art Museum to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His 2014 painting of Ferguson protesters was commissioned by “TIME” magazine. He has received numerous awards including the Artist as Activist Fellowship from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and the 2018 Rappaport Prize. Annette Gordon-Reed is the Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School and a professor of history in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. Her books include “The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family,” for which she won the Pulitzer Prize, and “‘Most Blessed of the Patriarchs’: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination.” This interview originally aired in June 2017. RSS PODCASTDESCRIPTION: Never let a person ... or a ministry ... or a church ... be your covering! Many people who had a powerful call of God on their lives have been deceived by the “false covering” (false discipleship) movement. Their anointing was diluted, the fire of the Spirit was quenched, and many millions of people were not reached for Christ! This teaching will expose the teachings ... and the calamity ... of the false discipleship (false covering) movement, and will protect you so that you can have a VITAL ministry! NOTICE: This information will protect you and your ministry in the future! THE FALSE COVERING MOVEMENT In the late 1960's and into the 1970's there arose a damaging movement to the Body of Christ called “The Covering” movement. Other names for this group were the (false) discipleship movement … or the (false) shepherding movement. Satan realized he could NOT stop the great outpouring of the Spirit, so he devised a means whereby he would use a sector of the church ‑ and some Christian leaders ‑ to slow it down and divert it: diffusing its power and intended Kingdom result! There were several popular teachers involved in this movement; however, not many were brilliant expositors. The teaching went to excess so far as to be used by Satan to quench true evangelistic and prophetic ministry with the result that false prophetic ministries came into being. Some of the excesses were as follows: I knew a pastor who was near death in the hospital. A person was taking the pastor flowers and was told they must first submit the idea to elders. I knew a young man who left the Midwest and came to the West Coast of the USA extremely discouraged. He had a flourishing and powerful youth ministry. He felt the Lord leading him to start a church; however, the pastor and elders of his church told him not to start it. A well known pastor friend of mine called me and asked me if I would come counsel the young man. I had just returned from a very exhausting six weeks in Africa and told my friend I would pray about it. On the third day, I called my friend and said, “The Lord wants me to counsel the young man.” I went to the pastor’s home, and during dinner the Spirit came upon me. I spoke to the young man and give Him the Lord’s directive: “Go back there and start a church!” That church has, I think, over 10,000 people now and has been sending missionaries all over the world. I knew a powerful pastor who also had a ministry gift of evangelism. This pastor had ministered for years and moved into a new geographic area. He felt God leading him to evangelize at the local university. During the time of his getting acquainted in the new city he was fellowshipping with some brethren in a local church. He thought it would be nice to invite them to evangelize with him. The elders of the church were involved in the “covering” movement and told him NOT to evangelize at the university. When he asked them what they would do IF he did so, they answered, “We will come against you with everything we have in the name of Jesus!” This man was one of the greatest pastors I have ever known, and who also worked with some of the best missionary organizations in the world. Many young people, and older people coming into the call of ministry, were kept from fulfilling the will of God in their lives, as well as hindered from being used to maximum potential by the Lord. Many of the pastors and Christian leaders who were involved in the (false) covering movement were NOT trying to operate with false or hidden motives. Many were trying to protect the sheep from bad decisions or from harmful teaching, or from people with hidden agendas. However, many were using the (false) covering mantra as a means of control, whether consciously or unconsciously; i.e., doing it purposely for control means, or not realizing that was why they were using it. It became an easy method whereby those under their ministry were controlled … kept from receiving other ministry … or, sadly to say, kept the tithes and offerings at the home front. During the 1970's the Lord sent me around the USA and also to other countries to expose this false teaching. Lots of precious ministries were saved from shipwreck. I can think of pastors who each have thousands of people in their congregations now who were under the bondage of the “false” covering movement, and who saw the light as God used me to expose it. These young men and women went on to OBEY what the Lord was telling them and started their own ministries with the result of cities and nations being reached for Christ. They came out of spiritual bondage - the trap of Satan - into FREEDOM of ministry! These are just of few of the multitudinous extremes of this Satanic strategy. The reason that Satan tries to get people deceived into the “false” covering trip is because he was once the “anointed cherub who covers” ... and NOW he does NOT want anyone under the covering of Jesus Christ. (Ezekiel 28:14-15) Man is NOT your covering; neither is a ministry or a church. If you think so, try this. The next time you start to get into a wreck or have an accident, see whose name you call on: the church, a minister, or … JESUS! When the BLOOD in the Tabernacle was placed by the High Priest upon the mercy seat in the Holy Place it effected atonement. The Hebrew word for “atonement” is “kaphar” and is a primitive root which means “to cover, (figuratively) to cancel, to cleanse, be merciful, to forgive, and to purge.” Once a year the High Priest would go into the Holy of Holies with the BLOOD of the sin offering of atonements. It was most holy unto the LORD. The Hebrew word here used for “atonements” is “kippur” and means “expiation” (in the plural), or “a satisfaction, or to appease for guilt or sin by sacrifice.” (Exodus Chapter 30) "Kaphar" and "kippur" both derive their meaning from the same Hebrew root form. It is the same word from which the High Holy holiday Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) derives its meaning. Make sure that the BLOOD of Jesus the Messiah is your covering. Lucifer was once the “anointed cherub who covers” and had authority and responsibility to protect and defend the holy mountain of God. Ezekiel 28:13 alludes to the possibility that part of his duty was to lead Heaven’s choirs in the worship of God. However, the scripture shows he wanted glory for himself and was cast down. Many in the “false” covering movement want “glory for themselves.” They are taking the position of God telling the people of God WHEN, HOW, and WHERE they can minister ... even to the extent of telling them NOT to minister. It’s interesting to note that in the Revelation of Jesus to John on the island of Patmos, the Lord commended the Church of Ephesus by saying: “But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I (Jesus) also hate.”  (Revelation 2:6) He also told the Church of Pergamos: “You also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.” The word “Nicolaitans” is a combination of two Greek words: nikos (meaning conqueror or victory) and laos (meaning people), which combination means “people conquerors, or conquering the laity.” Christ is saying here that he hates the doctrine of “people conquerors.” It is demonic in that it quenches and restricts the ministry of the Holy Spirit, thereby causing many people NOT to find Christ, and many people NOT to receive miracles, healing, and prophecy. Also, many workers for Christ are NOT thrust out into the harvest field. What the Holy Spirit starts, He wants to complete. Jesus purchased His people with His own BLOOD, and He does NOT want people - especially those who call themselves ministers of the Gospel - putting Christians in bondage and trying to own or control the people ... or to control the work the Holy Spirit wants to do through them. As ministers of the Gospel, we are to encourage and direct those the Spirit is calling and sending. There is a BIG difference between real discipleship and false discipleship. In real discipleship we produce, by God’s grace, disciples of Christ … NOT our disciples. Also, there is a BIG difference between mentoring and (false) covering. When we mentor others, we are available, as “sounding boards,” for people to come for advice, counsel, direction, and instruction … NOT as a controller of ministry or persons. Do NOT let men take the place of the Holy Spirit in your life and ministry. Let Jesus and His shed BLOOD be your covering. Align yourself through faith with His WILL and His PROTECTION.
