This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the debut film by artist Titus Kaphar, "Exhibiting Forgiveness." The semi-autobiographical film starring Andre Hollad, John Earl Jelks, and Andra Day follows an artist on the path to success that is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. Together, they struggle and learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving.
"Exhibiting Forgiveness" had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances from its cast members, André Holland, Andra Day, John Earl Jelks & Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and debut director Titus Kaphar's sensitive writing and direction which drew upon his own personal experiences with his father. Day, Earl Jelks, and Kaphar were all kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters from Roadside Attractions on October 18th. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Sewage has proven to be a valuable source of real-time SARS-CoV-2 data during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving public officials insights into the health of their community without relying on individuals getting tested. But as wastewater monitoring expands, local officials and their research partners are increasingly interested in how wastewater testing might also advance or hinder equity. On this episode of On the Evidence, guests Dr. Na'Taki Osborne Jelks, Dr. Otakuye Conroy-Ben, and Aparna Keshaviah discuss the challenges of and opportunities for ensuring an equitable approach to wastewater monitoring and the importance of representation from historic Black neighborhoods, Indigenous communities, and rural communities. Jelks, Conroy-Ben, and Keshaviah are involved with the Wastewater Action Group, a national initiative founded and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation's Pandemic Prevention Institute that seeks to transform wastewater data into public health action. The group includes five grantees that serve tribal nations and four cities: Atlanta, Houston, Louisville, and Tulsa. • Jelks, an assistant professor in environmental and health sciences at Spelman College, is an expert on health equity and community-engaged research approaches for environmental justice in southwest and northwest Atlanta's African-American neighborhoods. • Conroy-Ben is an assistant professor of environmental engineering at Arizona State University, a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, and the principal investigator for research and community outreach projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health to support tribal nations in combatting coronavirus and improving local resources. • Keshaviah is an applied biostatistician and principal researcher at Mathematica who is a nationally recognized expert in translational wastewater research, has led wastewater-based research in Montana and North Carolina, and is collaborating with the Rockefeller Foundation to develop robust analytics and tools that boost the capacity of public health personnel to use wastewater data. My guest is Jonathan Jelks. He’s an entrepreneur and leader in the downtown business community. His businesses include Motu Viget Spirits, GRUSA Apparel and Ambiance Kitchen and Lounge. Jonathan moves unflinchingly in many social and entrepreneurial circles in and around Grand Rapids and is someone I admire very much. This conversation centers much around race relations in Grand Rapids, Michigan which remains one of the most segregated cities in the United States. It took place about a week or so after protests in Grand Rapids turned destructive in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. Let’s just say we had an awful lot to talk about. We’ve two of Jonathan’s business partners on this podcast last year…Andrea “SuperDre” Wallace and Willie the Kid. Please listen to these conversations. All three are incredibly adept entrepreneurs that are moving the city of Grand Rapids forward in many different ways. Eric Nelson talked w/ former US resident Dionte Jelks about moving from Chicago to Canada, the difference in getting pulled over in the USA compared to Canada, getting over his fears of police and more.

The chaos in U.S. cities over the death of George Floyd has hit home for a Ladysmith school principal. Dionte Jelks says his brother and cousin were shot to death on Sunday afternoon in Chicago, as they were driving to his mother's home. Jelks says he is torn apart, debating whether to risk his life by returning to Chicago to mourn with his family. Jelks says he is so grateful that his three sons do not have to live in fear on Vancouver Island. He says he is thankful for the kind words and support from the school district and the Ladysmith community. A Go-Fund-Me campaign to help with funeral expenses has doubled its $5,000 dollar goal. The City of Parksville will not get its way when it comes to a proposed bylaw to restrict the distribution of clean needles. The bylaw would require any group distributing harm reduction supplies to register with the city and to track who is receiving needles. It would only be allowed to distribute retractable needles. And users would be required to return discarded needles or declare they have been safely disposed of before being given a new supply. The medical health officer for the mid-island has told the city its bylaw is likely unconstitutional and a contradiction to widely accepted government harm reduction practices. Dr. Paul Hasselback has refused to endorse it. Nanaimo News Now is reporting the Minister of Health, Adrian Dix, has formally rejected Parksville's plan saying “The bylaw restricts access to health services.”Ferry service resumes today between Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay. There will be four round trip sailings per day, but the vessels will only carry half their capacity to ensure social distancing. That's why BC Ferries is recommending vehicles and foot passengers make reservations. The increased demand for service will see more changes starting next week. Starting June the 9th, service between Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands will increase with the return to the winter schedule. Resumption of sailings between Long Harbour on Saltspring Island and Tsawassen will also begin on June the 9th. Did you lose your car in the flood waters that Imelda brought to the Gulf Coast area? Without reliable transportation to get you to work or take the kids to school how do you start getting back on track? Are you worried that based on your credit history you might get price gouged or pay an unreasonably high interest rate? Many people are not aware of a nonprofit organization that can help get you back on the road. We already have solutions in place as part of the Rebuild Texas Fund partnership. We were joined today by On The Road Regional Director, Lucretia Jelks. On the Road Lending is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2013 that provides vehicle selection assistance and long-term financial mentoring to address a little understood, but substantial problem—providing a way for low-income individuals and families to overcome transportation barriers so they can get to work, lead healthier lives, and avoid predatory lending. We help people improve their credit and purchase fuel-efficient, reliable cars, financing them through our sister private-equity loan fund with a low-cost loan. In the latest episode of the “Best Coast Boys” podcast, hosts Landon McCool and John Owning dive into the Cowboys haul during the 2019 NFL Draft, specifically looking at the defensive players that were added. "The “Best Coast Boys” podcast is a Cowboys-centric podcast that will delve into many other topics. Whether it is the NFL, Cowboys, movies, music, comics, food or Mixed Martial Arts, nothing is off limits on the “Best Coast Boys” podcast. After the pleasantries, Landon and John dive draft talk surrounding the Cowboys. The guys start by discussing the defensive players selected by the Cowboys in the 2019 NFL Draft. The guys begin by giving their overarching thoughts on the draft class before diving into their thoughts on Trysten Hill. The guys discuss why Hill is such a great fit and why Dallas selected him when there were better graded players on the board. From there, the guys discuss Mike Jackson Jr.’s fit on the defense and why he has the size and length are important for his projection into the Cowboys defense. The guys then move their attention to Joe Jackson. Landon details why he’s a good fit at left defensive end while John wonders how Jackson is going to make the 53-man roster. Next up, the guys discuss Donovan Wilson, and Landon drools over Wilson’s physicality from the box. After that, the guys take a look at Jalen Jelks’ fit on the team. John discusses how Jelks can be used in different ways and why he’s a dark horse candidate to make Dallas’ 53-man roster. The guys end the podcast by discussing if UDFA’s Daniel Wise and Chris Westry have a shot to make the 53. John gives his first post-draft hot take. The “Best Coast Boys” podcast will be back next week to review the Cowboys’ haul from the 2019 NFL Draft. You won’t want to miss it!
That’s right, for some reason this episode is two hours long. We cover the Softball team’s chances at reaching .500, then we chat about the Baseball team’s somewhat mediocre season.Of course, we talk all about the NFL draft, where Amadi, Hollins, Jelks. Mitchell, Brooks-James, and Dillon found new homes. We wrap it all up with an ATQ & A and a review of the 1953 Webfoot Football season. But after the credits, we discuss the most recent episode of Game of Thrones.SPOILER ALERT FOR HEREDITARY, PSYCHO, AND GAME OF THRONES!!!!Available on just about every podcast app!

We also get into the Heisman race as an end of show bonus!
Jalen Jelks talks about Oregon trying to be tougher on the road.

Throughout this podcast both of us sound pretty negative at times. But we are actually pretty optimistic about the rest of the season. We move on to recapping the game against Washington State. The strides that the defense has made have been nothing short of astonishing. Leavitt is getting paid a lot by the athletic department but he has certainly earned it so far. Troy Dye has been an absolute force in the middle of the field. Springs and Jelks have also caught the attention of Pro Football Focus. Ultimately, we have a true freshman quarterback who looked like a true freshman quarterback against one of the better defenses in the conference. He made some freshman mistakes and struggled at times but I think he’ll have a much better second game after simply having a start under his belt. The offense made it harder, especially the line by not getting much of a push on first down or on the fourth down tries. Washington State did a good job of making late shifts and stunts on the defensive line that were effective in causing confusion. Ifo Bomaye and I have a long conversation near the end of the podcast addressing the trend of fans leaving early from Duck games. We’re pretty understanding of the situation with night games and we do not believe in fan-shaming. This also leads into a short discussion about selling alcohol at college sporting events, which we disagree on. Lastly, we look to the upcoming weekend of football. There are a lot of games with double-digit spreads but will be pretty telling about the teams involved. Oklahoma plays Texas, West Virginia plays Texas Tech, and with San Jose State at Hawai’i capping off the night.

In the first full-length biography of Benjamin Mays (1894–1984), Randal Maurice Jelks chronicled the life of the man Martin Luther King Jr. called his “spiritual and intellectual father.” Dean of the Howard University School of Religion, president of Morehouse College, and mentor to influential black leaders, Mays had a profound impact on the education of the leadership of the black church and of a generation of activists, policymakers, and educators. Jelks argued that Mays’s ability to connect the message of Christianity with the responsibility to challenge injustice prepared the black church for its pivotal role in the civil rights movement.
