They explore society's declining values, the rise in youth crime and how educational approaches impact children's development. Birbalsingh shares her philosophy of extreme ownership in schools, arguing that addressing small infractions prevents larger problems. They also discuss modern education, political correctness and the importance of teaching personal responsibility to create a better society. Katharine Burbalsingh REVEALS: Her broken windows theory approach to discipline Why society has become increasingly dangerous Why people are now afraid to confront wrongdoing That schools must teach children personal responsibility, duty towards others and self-sacrifice rather than victimhood How the absence of a Dad significantly impacts children's development and how society no longer recognises the importance of Dads How private schools have lost their way by embracing woke ideologies rather than maintaining traditional educational values That schools are microcosms of society, when schools change, society changes and vice versa Excessive bureaucracy and performative DEI training drain meaning and purpose from schools BEST MOMENTS "When you don't look after the details, the biggest stuff starts to happen... I say, what do you do when a kid throws a chair? What do you do when a kid gets up out of a lesson and angry and just marches out? I say, that never happens." "It's how you run a successful school, you care about those details and it's how you run a successful country, frankly." "Race relations were better in the nineties and the early two thousands than they are now. Religious issues in the country were better then than they are now. All this stuff around being LGBT and so on, all of it, everything was better then." "I've made a lot of money in my life and by far the best feeling is not all the cars I've bought. It's the money I've given away and the people I've helped." "Being a teacher is the best job in the world... Money makes life easier, but it doesn't bring you meaning." That's the stark warning of Katharine Birbalsingh, head of the Michaela Community School, often dubbed ‘Britain's strictest headteacher'. Here, Birbalsingh recalls her clashes with Bridget Phillipson, the Labour education secretary. She explains why the government's new schools bill will drive down academic standards, let bad behaviour slip and make it harder for kids to get into a decent state school. She also discusses the dangers of ‘decolonising' the curriculum and why schools must cultivate a sense of national belonging. Celebrate 25 years of spiked. Parenting, President Trump and UK net zero - is it time for a reality check? Have the middle classes ruined parenting in the UK? Uber head Katharine Birbalsingh has spoken out on parenting methods, and it's given Giles an idea for a book – “Parenting tips for the working class.” Do the travails of modern parenting have anything in common with the redrawing of post war alliances and UK net zero targets? Could it be that across the board things are a little too comfortable and it is time for shake up? Esther turns to the history books for the answer and espouses the benefits of upheaval and existential threat…purely from an objective standpoint. Anything is better than talking about toilets! The freedoms that the UK's academy schools have been granted could be curtailed. Labour's Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill proposes centralising and standardising decision making across state schools in the UK. The Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, claims this will improve conditions for every student across the country. Katharine Birbalsingh, who has been called "Britain's strictest headteacher", is highly critical of these developments, calling them cultural Marxism. However, senior educator Leora Cruddas - who leads an organisation representing two thirds of UK academies - has welcomed many of the measures in the bill. Pippa Bailey is joined by Birbalsingh, Cruddas and the New Statesman's Hannah Barnes to discuss who should decide how and what children are taught. Katharine Birbalsingh has many monikers: the founder and headmistress at Michaela Community School; chair of the Social Mobility Commission, an advisory body in England's Department for Education; Commander of the Order of the British Empire; honorary fellow at New College, Oxford; Britain's strictest headmistress; and of course, Miss Snuffy. In 2010, she was tapped to give a speech at Britain's Conservative Party conference, after which she was asked not to return to the school where she was employed. She eventually resigned and established her own school in 2014. A decade later, The Michaela Community School, a British free school comparable to an American charter school, which serves roughly 800 students ranging from eleven to eighteen, regularly boasts the highest growth scores of any K–12 educational institution in England. There are probably many correct answers to these questions, but on this episode of The Report Card we want to narrow it down and focus on one particular school, Michaela, that has a very particular set of answers to these questions. Located near London's Wembley Stadium, Michaela is a free school that opened its doors in 2014 and today has the highest GCSE value-added score in all of England. Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with the headmistress of the Michaela Community School, Katharine Birbalsingh. They discuss the importance of K-12 education, why it matters more than the universities in regard to the formation of thinking minds, how children can pursue both excellence and a life of dignity, and why strictness, absent tyranny, is the best form of education. Katharine Birbalsingh is Headmistress and co-founder of Michaela Community School and former Chair of the Social Mobility Commission. Recorded at the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Saturday 28 October at Church House, London. Digital devices are so omnipresent that sociologists call today's children ‘Generation Glass'. Our pre-teens have never known a world without tablets and apps. The ubiquity of technology during their formative years risks turning them into ‘screenagers' with high digital literacy but low socialisation and focus. In education, devices are routinely distributed to pupils and the gamification of learning is well-established. Yet pushback is mounting. The controversial Online Safety Bill proposes reams of radical measures drafted specifically to quell fears over children's internet safety. Meanwhile increasing numbers of schools are adopting mobile-phone bans, claiming they improve concentration and mental health while reducing cheating and cyberbullying. Parents' lobby group UsForThem is even pressing for a total ban on phones for all under-16s and grim tobacco-style health warnings on devices. The campaign is endorsed by Katharine Birbalsingh, headteacher and former social mobility tsar, who has equated the threat to youth of mobile phones to that of heroin addiction. But is this all merely a re-heat of the ‘square eyes' moral panic which once beset television? The BBC thinks so: its high-profile Square-Eyed Boy campaign seeks to reassure parents that screens can be a force for good for children. After all, isn't greater literacy, be it via screens or paper pages, something to be encouraged? Some teachers argue that phones can enhance schoolwork while others insist banning them is draconian, impractical and futile. Should we take phones away from kids for their own good, or should the very idea be dismissed as screen-shaming? Katharine Birbalsingh is a British teacher and education reform advocate. She is the founder and Headmistress of Michaela Community School, a free school established in 2014 in Wembley Park, London.Despite achieving remarkable results for students, Michaela faces political resistance due to its traditional approach, and prioritizing hard work and academic rigor over identity politics. Katharine discusses this opposition (which mostly comes from the political left) as well as the importance of integration among students. The discussion extends to broader societal issues at the intersection of race and education. Katharine instituted a prayer ban at the school, and an incident between a Muslim student and the school was taken to the High Court of Justice. On April 16th, 2024, the High Court ruled in Katharine's favor. Watch this episode on YouTube.

With reference to Lauren Southern, Candace Owens, Katharine Birbalsingh, and Pearl Davis, we ask why so many rightwing women do not practice what they preach in terms of trad gender roles? High-powered, and often unmarried and/or childless career women, traditionalists and conservative women advocate marriage and being a housewife for women, but not for themselves. We explore this political trend, what Andrea Dworkin had to say about the tendency of rightwing women towards exceptionalism, and comment on a number of topics, from educational traditionalism, to the importance of having the freedom to learn conflict resolution during adolescence, and the latest Marks & Spencer's Christmas advert. We also wonder why Marxist-feminists, who only view women's liberation as women workers under capitalism, not liberation for women as a sex class, so often want to be stay-at-home wives and mothers? Despite their politics focusing on the workplace and women as workers. How is it that more leftwing women want what rightwing women advocate for in terms of lifestyle, than rightwing women do themselves?
On October 2nd, England's Department of Education announced it will back all head teachers who ban smartphone use in schools, even during break times. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, during the 2019-20 school year, 77% of public schools in the U.S. said they did not allow phone use during school hours, yet many schools still struggle to enforce such policies. What can educators do to ensure distraction-free environments where students can focus on learning? Naomi and Ian are back after a few months' hiatus and joined by Katharine Birbalsingh, founder and head teacher of Michael Community School, a free school established in 2014 in Wembley Park, London. Katharine explains Michaela's “if we see it, if we hear it, we take it” policy on phone use in school, along with the remarkable results she has seen in student performance and behavior during the school day. Consistency in messaging and enforcement, she explains, is the key to creating a culture where teachers, parents, and even students, are in support of a phone-free environment. Beyond just banning phones, Michaela seeks to instill in students the principles of personal responsibility, self-discipline, and resilience. Katharine outlines how she applies these principles to specific issues like assigning homework, encouraging all students to see themselves as “British,” not just members of a particular racial or ethnic group, and teaching children “knowledge” over “skills.” ResourcesFinally, We're All Wising up About the Dangers of Screen Time for Kids – Naomi Schaefer Riley, The Los Angeles TimesThe Power of Culture: The Michaela Way – book by Katharine Birbalsingh Katharine Birbalsingh on Michaela – The Report Card with Nat MalkusShow Notes0:00:50 – What is Michaela's approach to devices in school?0:06:47 – How do you gain consistency among your team regarding phone use?0:15:14 – How replicable are Michaela's policies, and is anyone attempting to replicate them?0:19:31 – How does a free school in England compare to a charter school in America? 0:24:42 – is the success of the Michaela model garnering attention from policymakers and leaders in education? 0:28:04 – how does E.D. For this archive debate from 2019, we invited a panel of top speakers to discuss the motion: The West Should Pay Reparations For Slavery. Should there be a broad programme of reparations – not just financial compensation, but acknowledgement of the crimes committed and the lasting damage caused by slavery? Or would this just worsen social tensions by reopening old wounds? Arguing for the motion were Kehinde Andrews, Professor of Black Studies at Birmingham City University; and Esther Stanford-Xosei, reparations activist and lawyer. Arguing against the motion were Katharine Birbalsingh, headmistress and co-founder of Michaela Community School in London; and Tony Sewell, educational consultant and CEO of the charity Generating Genius. The debate was chaired by social historian, author and academic, Emma Dabiri. ... Did you know that Intelligence Squared offers way more than podcasts? Twitter erupted when she tweeted that 'original sin' was responsible for the fact children need to be habituated into choosing good over evil. She discusses child education and human nature with Christian leader Steve Chalke, founder of numerous Oasis Trust schools, who says that 'original goodness' is a more biblical view than 'original sin'.
