To make sure you never miss great content like this, subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/@spiked Labour is about to destroy England's top-performing state schools. That's the stark warning of Katharine Birbalsingh, head of the Michaela Community School, often dubbed ‘Britain's strictest headteacher'. Here, Birbalsingh recalls her clashes with Bridget Phillipson, the Labour education secretary. She explains why the government's new schools bill will drive down academic standards, let bad behaviour slip and make it harder for kids to get into a decent state school. She also discusses the dangers of ‘decolonising' the curriculum and why schools must cultivate a sense of national belonging. Celebrate 25 years of spiked. Bridget Phillipson has updated the House of Commons on the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act (HEFSA), which secured cross-party support in the last Parliament and received Royal Assent in May 2023. She will now implement some – but not all – of the remaining clauses. Clause 4, a cornerstone of the original law, will not be commenced, according to Phillipson. This would have introduced a statutory tort enabling students, university employees and visiting speakers to seek compensation in the courts if their free speech rights had been breached. The government has also removed provisions that would have included student unions in the Act's scope. Speaking to The Telegraph, Toby Young said: “It comes as no surprise that the government appears to have performed a U-turn in response to our claim. But the Free Speech Union hasn't received any communication from the Secretary of State, and the devil will be in the detail. In the meantime, we will be pressing on with our case.” During our discussion we refer to a very interesting post on X by Professor Jo Phoenix. There was further good news this week, reported in both The Telegraph and The Sunday Times. Eleanor Frances has secured a £116,749 settlement after bringing claims of victimisation, constructive dismissal and discrimination on the grounds of philosophical belief against the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). Ms Frances said she was forced out of the service because of a “politicised climate of fear” within Whitehall, exacerbated by internal policies influenced by Stonewall and adopted without proper consultation. The departments are now working together to introduce a revised gender reassignment policy, informed by a new central model policy. We end with a discussion around how the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has abolished the terms ‘slaves' and ‘the slave trade' as part of the process of decolonising the curriculum in Scotland. The full story was reported this week in The Mail. ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.

We are called to cultivate listening communities in a society that does not listen well and that does not fear God. I believe we must speak confidently, faithfully, boldly, and courageously. If I stand up in my congregation and they don't trust that I believe what I'm saying, that I am who I say I am, that I am a Christian, then the appeals to emotion, the appeals even to the Word will probably fall on doubting ears and heart. I never take that trust for granted and I work to earn it every single day of my life.---Listen to Rev. Dr. Connie Phillipson being interviewed by CBS Ambassador Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling. Prior to Connie's call to ordained ministry within the Anglican Church, she worked in Ontario's criminal justice system for over 30 years. In this episode, Connie talks about her close relationship with God which started at a young age and how she came to realize that He was calling her to serve. She describes how we are all capable of falling from grace and deserving of redemption.Rev. Dr. Connie Phillipson has served at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Toronto), St. Mark's Anglican Church (Orangeville), and as the Incumbent of St. George's Anglican Church (Utopia) and Christ Church-St. Jude's Anglican Church (Ivy). In January 2024, she assumed responsibility as Interim Priest-in-Charge of the Parish of Haliburton.Prior to her call to ordained ministry, Connie worked for 30+ years within the Ontario criminal justice system. At the outset of her career with the Ministry of Correctional Services, Connie provided social work services to inmates and supervised clients on probation and parole. She fulfilled her desire to superintend a large maximum-security male institution when she was appointed Superintendent of the Toronto (Don) Jail. In addition, she held senior management positions at the Toronto East and Toronto West Detention Centres, the Mimico Correctional Centre, Toronto City Hall Court Services, as well as various corporate positions in policy and program development. In 2000, Connie became the first Executive Director to the York Regional Police Services Board and when she retired in 2009, she continued her studies at Wycliffe College.Connie graduated from the University of Toronto with her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, Master of Social Work, Master of Education, and Master of Divinity (Honours) degrees. That's right, it's another brand new shiny episode! And what an episode it is. Bridget Phillipson is one of Labour's brightest stars and is increasingly in the limelight. Despite having been an extra in Byker Grove (if you're under 40, Google it), the spotlight isn't what she's about. This is a fascinating hour with a highly driven politician who may be shyer than some of her peers, but is no less animated about changing the world. Heather Phillipson's The Creeps is written in response to Emma Talbot's How the Web was Woven (2009), an acrylic on canvas work with a variety of vignettes, spider webs, texts and mysterious figures. Reflecting the haunting, unsettling atmosphere in Talbot's painting, Phillipson considers how an artwork can never be fully understood or described, but is something we can continually think with and learn from. The text was commissioned as part of our exhibition Close Looking: Collection Studies from the Roberts Institute of Art at Cromwell Place, on show from the 22 November to 3 December 2023.The exhibition is about close looking and reading. Six writers of different backgrounds have been specially commissioned to write responses to six works from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection, with texts that span from poetry to storytelling.Read the text and see the artwork here.Have questions, comments or want to see more of what the Roberts Institute of Art does? Steven is the Clinical Director at the Center for Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy in New York. We discuss the things Steve wants you to know about OCD recovery, including why the OCD topics are irrelevant, we need to show the brain that the topic is meaningless, why we shouldn't use memory to prove the OCD topic is irrelevant, the topics of OCD are only made relevant by the emotion behind it, people with OCD are not fearful people (generally speaking) they are fearful of a small amount of specific worries only. Steve then answers questions from some of the listeners of the show. He answers whether he has OCD or not, superstition and metaphysical OCD, clarification on Steve's comment about an OCD god, dealing with the fear of death, ways to unhook from OCD thoughts, dealing with obsessing about emotional numbness, are OCD and addiction related, how to deal with intrusive thoughts in everyday moments, how much therapy homework should I do, why am I not getting better from exposures I.e. I'm still obsessing, sensorimotor OCD around the anus, magical thinking around OCD, and much more. Hope it helps. The conservatives and Labour party appear to be agreed on one issue on the political agenda – that is childcare. Both parties realise it will be a key battleground in the general election with polling suggesting it is of particular concern in some of the red wall seat which the conservatives need to hold onto if they are to stay in government. The UK's childcare system is one of the most expensive in the world and ranked one of the least effective according to a recent report by UNICEF. Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson joins Nuala McGovern in the studio to discuss her party's plans for reform which she says will compare with Aneurin Bevan's creation of the National Health Service. What is the role of a best friend at a deathbed? ‘We All Want Impossible Things' a new novel by Catherine Newman is funny and rude as well as very sad and it's a celebration of all sorts of love. Ash's best friend is dying and her heart is breaking but life does go on, until it stops. Catherine Newman joins Nuala to explain what inspired the book When she was 19, Chanel Contos was playing a drinking game with friends. Someone asked ‘what's the kinkiest thing you like to do during sex? Her 17-year-old friend replied, ‘It's not really that kinky, but I guess choking.' Now 24, and listed as one of the BBC's 100 Women, Chanel wants to challenge the normalisation of sexual choking (and other acts such as spitting or slapping). She's joined on the programme by writer Rachel Thompson, author of Rough: How Violence Has Found Its Way Into the Bedroom and what We Can Do about it. They discuss why these acts are so prevalent, and whether women and girls are feeling pressured into them. Could the state pension age be raised again from 67 to 68 and what would it mean for women? We talk to the former pensions minister and conserative peer Baroness Ros Altmann. And we hear the latest about female nominations at the Oscars with film critic Karen Krizanovich. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Manager: Donald McDonald
