Have you noticed that when you are working on a problem or trying to come up with a new idea there comes a point of diminishing returns? Then the more you try, the worse it gets. That appears to be true for everyone and there is a sweet spot after which your efforts suffer. This episode begins with a discussion on why this happens and when you should stop trying and do something else instead. https://hbr.org/2014/07/get-your-brain-unstuck When you think of the factors that impact your health, you probably think of medical care. And yes, medicine is important however, the type of person you are and how you treat other people is even more important – by a long shot! That's according to Kelli Harding, M.D. and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Kelli is also author of the book The Rabbit Effect: Live Longer Happier and Healthier with the Groundbreaking Science of Kindness (https://amzn.to/2ZLksf1) and she joins me to reveal how social interaction and how kind you are impact how healthy you will be and how long you will likely live. In all of our lives there have been important moments that have helped to shape who we are. These are transformative moments. Perhaps someone said something to you that made you think differently about yourself or your abilities – good or bad. So what is it about these brief moments that make them so powerful they can actually change the course of your life or change what you think of yourself? Dr. Michael Rousell is an associate professor at southern Oregon University and has been studying these transformative moments for over three decades. He joins me to reveal the surprising reason why these moments have such an impact and how you can use them to your advantage. Loneliness, living alone and poor social connections are as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It's worse for you than obesity. And you're much more likely to suffer from dementia, heart disease, and depression if you're isolated and alone(1). The importance of social connections and touch has been proven in both human and animal models, but the solution is much less obvious. How do combat the loneliness epidemic? My guest on this week's show has some excellent ideas. Special guest: Kelli Harding, MD We all hear medical stories of triumph and frustration—there are so many mysteries when it comes to health- why some people, who are biologically healthy, but feel ill—and some patients who are biologically ill, but feel healthy. Doctors have racked their brains for years- looking for patterns, problems, links that somehow explain why certain people get better quickly and others get sick quickly and don't recover. And perhaps it might surprise you, as you will hear in the next interview—that how we feel is not necessarily about the dosage of medication or the brilliance of the doctor but about something simpler- something much more common and humane but something that isn't always provided—and it comes down to the science of kindness, connection and human compassion. When we look at our children- and notice that some thrive and some continue to falter, it will be interesting to look through the lens of kindness, compassion and connection to see if this is any area that needs to be bolstered in the lives of the kids we know and love. The lives that are often stressed with go, go, go hours being shuttled from sports practices to music practice to hours of homework, where they spend a great deal of time in school where many might not feel seen and heard, where social media can make us feel more disconnected, envious and perfectionistic than ever-- How could some shifts of the heart, in the time we spend, with who we spend it with-- make the difference in the wellness of our children and ourselves?
