In this conversation, I sit down with Andrew Sanders to explore the cyclical nature of conflict and war, examining historical patterns, the role of security as a resource, and the impact of media on public perception. It delves into the radicalization of individuals, particularly in the context of the IRA, and discusses the implications of internment and inequality in Irish Republicanism. The discussion also touches on necropolitics and the manipulation of state power, drawing parallels to contemporary issues. This conversation delves into the complexities of the Northern Ireland conflict, exploring the fragmentation of paramilitary groups, the justifications for violence, and the impact of identity and diaspora support on Irish Republicanism. We reflect on the historical context of the Troubles, the perceptions of violence, and the lasting impressions from interviews with individuals on both sides of the conflict.Andrews books - https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Andrew-Sanders/author/B005CSPUIC?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=trueDark Finds Podcast IG - https://www.instagram.com/darkfindspodcast/Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/darkfindspodcast/membershipDark Finds IG - https://www.instagram.com/dark.finds/Dark Finds YouTube Channel for more dark long-form content - https://www.youtube.com/@DarkFindsChannelDark Finds book - https://amzn.eu/d/3VHPOTjKey takeawaysWar is a recurring theme in history, often driven by underlying tensions.Security is often used as a justification for military actions.Media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception of violence.Radicalization can stem from feelings of injustice and inequality.Internment has historically led to increased violence and radicalization.Socialism has been a significant aspect of Irish Republicanism. The dynamics of violence can change over time, affecting recruitment.Power vacuums within organizations can lead to chaos and infighting.Necropolitics highlights the state's role in determining who lives and dies.Contemporary issues often echo historical conflicts. Is polygamy justifiable according to the Bible? In this video, we explore what Scripture really says about polygamy, marriage, and God's original design for relationships. Many people—especially young Christians, college students, and skeptics—ask why polygamy appears in the Old Testament and if it's ever acceptable for Christians today. We dive deep into the biblical narrative, examining key figures like Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon, and compare their stories to God's clear intentions for marriage revealed in Genesis, the teachings of Jesus, and Paul's letters.Whether you're wrestling with hard questions about biblical ethics, want to strengthen your Christian worldview, or simply curious about how the Bible treats complex moral issues, this video is for you. Our channel tackles controversial topics and gray areas of the Christian faith, helping believers think biblically and critically about modern issues.Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more honest conversations about faith, theology, and the Bible. Sam Cooke was a lot of things: soul superstar, civil rights champion, whip smart entrepreneur. But he was also a serial womanizer with an unbridled libido. On December 11, 1964, Cooke was shot to death by Bertha Lee Franklin, manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles. The killing was ruled a justifiable homicide due to Cooke's unruly, drunken behavior, which involved him holding another woman captive in his hotel room and allegedly raping her earlier in the evening. With full appreciation of the #MeToo moment we are currently all living through as a culture, Disgraceland, with fresh eyes, looks into this crime and the successful effort by Sam Cooke's family and powerful music industry colleagues to salvage his legacy and reputation by personally discrediting his victim. Send us a text00:27 - Are AI Apps now investable?AI applications like Harvey ($3B valuation), Cursor ($10B), and Perplexity ($9B) may form a sub-asset class. They act as service providers, cutting operational costs (e.g., reducing law firm expenses by 30-50%), but face risks from AI platforms like OpenAI encroaching unless they secure proprietary data or niche use cases.11:30 - Pre-IPO stocks that will never IPO?!Companies increasingly avoid IPOs, leveraging private markets for higher valuations and liquidity without public burdens like quarterly earnings. This trend, seen with figures like the Colson brothers, boosts secondary market opportunities.31:13 - Are AI Platform valuations justifiable?AI platforms like OpenAI, with rumored $2K-$20K/month PhD-level agents, hold stronger moats via data and infrastructure. Apps built on top struggle to justify valuations (e.g., $10B for Cursor), though strategic investments (e.g., OpenAI Ventures backing Harvey) may offer protection.New AI ventures like Safe Superintelligence ($30B) and Thinking Machines Lab ($9B), founded by ex-OpenAI billionaires, ride a valuation surge dubbed “greater fool theory.” High employee compensation (e.g., millions in 1-2 years) might misalign incentives, potentially slowing innovation.
People getting let go is all over the news right now and sometimes there is a VERY good reason for someone to get fired. Send us a textState lotteries are a 12-figure business in the US of A. Americans spend more money on lottery tickets than on books, video games, recorded music, movie and sports tickets combined. Of course, lottery revenue is allocated to public goods like schools and parks, but it's a double-edged sword, as lotteries are disproportionately funded by the poorest third of households, i.e., the people who can least afford them. Mark takes Joe through the checkered history of lotteries, their pros and cons, and the role they might play in the lives of all those people who trade their hard-earned dollar for an elusive dream.

Summary of Chapter 5: Homicide Chapter 5 provides a comprehensive overview of homicide, focusing on various types of homicide, legal defenses available to defendants, and the processes involved in the investigation and prosecution of homicide cases. 1. Definition of Homicide Homicide is broadly defined as the killing of one human being by another. It includes both lawful and unlawful killings. Unlawful killings are typically classified under criminal law as murder or manslaughter, depending on the presence of malice aforethought, the intent of the perpetrator, and other circumstances surrounding the act. 2. Types of Homicide Murder: The unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought. It is divided into first-degree (premeditated) and second-degree (non-premeditated) murder. Manslaughter: A less severe form of homicide characterized by the absence of malice aforethought. It is divided into voluntary manslaughter (intentional killing in the heat of passion) and involuntary manslaughter (unintentional killing due to recklessness or negligence). Justifiable Homicide: Killings permitted under the law, such as in self-defense or defense of others. Excusable Homicide: Killings that occur under circumstances that are considered less blameworthy, such as accidental deaths. 3. Voluntary Manslaughter Voluntary manslaughter involves an intentional killing that occurs in the "heat of passion" as a result of adequate provocation. Key elements include: Intent to kill or cause serious harm. Adequate provocation causing a reasonable person to lose self-control. The killing occurred while the defendant was in a state of passion. 4. Involuntary Manslaughter Involuntary manslaughter involves an unintentional killing resulting from recklessness or criminal negligence. Key elements include: The killing was unintentional. The defendant acted with reckless disregard for human life or failed to exercise reasonable care. 5. Justifiable and Excusable Homicide Justifiable Homicide: Involves killings that are permitted under the law, such as self-defense, defense of others, or actions taken by law enforcement officers. Excusable Homicide: Involves killings that occur under circumstances that reduce the defendant's culpability, such as accidents or lack of intent. 6. Legal Defenses in Homicide Cases Defendants may raise various defenses to argue they should not be held criminally liable for the killing: Self-Defense: Using reasonable force to protect oneself from imminent harm. Defense of Others: Using force to protect another person from imminent harm. Insanity: The defendant was unable to understand the nature or wrongfulness of their actions due to a severe mental disorder. Duress: Committing a crime under the threat of imminent harm or death. Diminished Capacity: The defendant's mental capacity was impaired, reducing their ability to form the necessary intent for a higher degree of homicide. 7. Homicide Investigation and Prosecution The investigation and prosecution of homicide cases involve several critical steps: Crime Scene Investigation: Securing the scene, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses. Autopsy and Medical Examination: Determining the cause and manner of death and testing for drugs or alcohol. Legal Proceedings: Arrest and charging, preliminary hearing, arraignment, trial, and sentencing. Sentencing: Sentencing varies based on the degree of the offense, circumstances of the crime, and the defendant's criminal history. Factors influencing sentencing include the severity of the crime, aggravating factors, and mitigating factors. Overall, Chapter 5 delves into the complexities of homicide law, providing an in-depth look at the various types of homicide, the defenses available to defendants, and the procedural aspects of handling homicide cases in the criminal justice system. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

But some consumers, small businesses and advocacy groups are warning transaction fees are stil too high, and customers may still being ripped off. Ellen O'Dwyer reports.

Torture is generally thought of as a bad things - an unacceptable means to an end. But what if that end is justifiable? In many cases, torture is clearly unethical - for example when used as a means of political suppression, as a fear tactic, or for a forced confession. But what about torture in more ambiguous cases - when the torturer is fairly confident that the person being tortured has key information that could save many lives if it were obtained? On this episode of Created To Thrive Podcast, host Lori K. Snyder and guest, Lisa Pinney delve into the topic of processing anger for better mental health. They explore how impostor syndrome can lead to negative thoughts and self-doubt, as well as the impact of past experiences and others' opinions on feeling like an impostor. They discuss the difficulty in recognizing and accepting one's own truth, which can result in feeling insecure and questioning oneself. The hosts emphasize the importance of making a stand for oneself, which often leads to anger or frustration. The episode takes a unique turn as they discuss how anger during menopause is a topic that is not often discussed in relation to women. The speaker shares their personal experiences of increased anxiety, anger, and feelings of defeat during menopause. They felt alone and had unfounded anger towards their husband. The hosts highlight how menopause can bring up unresolved feelings and emotions that were not dealt with previously, making it a transformative time where individuals are forced to pay attention and make necessary shifts. Throughout the episode, we emphasize the importance of processing and recognizing secondary emotions. We discuss how commonly taught techniques to manage emotions and change negative thoughts may not work with emotions like anger, as they need to be processed on a deeper level. They encourage listeners to sit still, practice the pause, and pay attention to thoughts and feelings. They explore the connection between emotions and organs, emphasizing the importance of taking care of the soul and body as part of holistic wellbeing. The episode also addresses societal expectations placed on women and the suppression of anger that often comes with it. The hosts discuss the potential negative consequences, such as facing resistance and questions about authority when women assert themselves. However, they highlight how speaking up and expressing one's truth can be empowering and something to be proud of. The hosts explore the need to recognize patterns, process emotions, and bring them into the light. They stress the importance of addressing natural concerns and taking care of natural needs before seeking spiritual answers. Connecting with God can help fulfill emotional desires and provide comfort, strategy, and guidance in taking bold steps of faith. In closing, the host thanks the guest for her insight and discuss plans to address prolonged anger and its consequences in a future episode. They stress the importance of processing emotions, as suppressing them can lead to destructive behaviors such as lashing out or taking anger out on others. They share personal experiences of suppressing their own emotions in the past and highlight the importance of being honest with oneself and finding healthy ways to sit with emotions and be kind to oneself. Whether it's skiing in Afghanistan, eating lobster in Cuba, or a package tour in North Korea - here are some things to consider for when you plan your next holiday. In this episode of the podcast we explore the ethical boundaries of travel and tourism to countries under a repressive regime. Is it justifiable to travel to such places, potentially aiding oppressive governments with tourism dollars? Or, could these visits serve as a crucial bridge, creating an avenue for dialogue and cultural exchange, and an opportunity for the outside world to witness the realities on the ground? Our host for this episode is Philippa Thomas, and our guests are James Willcox, Suki Kim, and Evan Dyer. — We'd love to hear your feedback and what you think we should talk about next, who we should have on and what our future debates should be. Doc couldn't reach Embiid and couldn't get past the second round. But if Harden had a hand in firing it would feel dirty and icky.
