During RSAC Conference 2025, Andrew Carney, Program Manager at DARPA, and (remotely via video) Dr. Kathleen Fisher, Professor at Tufts University and Program Manager for the AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC), guide attendees through an immersive experience called Northbridge—a fictional city designed to showcase the critical role of AI in securing infrastructure through the DARPA-led AI Cyber Challenge.Inside Northbridge: The Stakes Are RealNorthbridge simulates the future of cybersecurity, blending AI, infrastructure, and human collaboration. It's not just a walkthrough — it's a call to action. Through simulated attacks on water systems, healthcare networks, and cyber operations, visitors witness firsthand the tangible impacts of vulnerabilities in critical systems. Dr. Fisher emphasizes that the AI Cyber Challenge isn't theoretical: the vulnerabilities competitors find and fix directly apply to real open-source software relied on by society today. The AI Cyber Challenge: Pairing Generative AI with Cyber ReasoningThe AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC) invites teams from universities, small businesses, and consortiums to create cyber reasoning systems capable of autonomously identifying and fixing vulnerabilities. Leveraging leading foundation models from Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, the teams operate with tight constraints—working with limited time, compute, and LLM credits—to uncover and patch vulnerabilities at scale. Remarkably, during semifinals, teams found and fixed nearly half of the synthetic vulnerabilities, and even discovered a real-world zero-day in SQLite.Building Toward DEFCON Finals and BeyondThe journey doesn't end at RSA. As the teams prepare for the AIxCC finals at DEFCON 2025, DARPA is increasing the complexity of the challenge—and the available resources. We talk about the ways in which admissions representatives visit your school, hometown, or surrounding areas. We share tips and advice on how to best interact with them while also being strategic in showing initiative to those schools you may or may not already know. Cameron Walsh completed his Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies at Appalachian State University, and has always had a passion for helping others. Spending 3 years volunteering to coach lacrosse at a local high school, he was able to guide his athletes through the scholarship and recruiting process, Cameron decided that his greatest desire was to help other students succeed in the college process. For the past 10 years, Cameron has been successfully steering hundreds of students from all walks of life on their college journey, staying in touch with them throughout their college years and transcending into a friendship. In addition to being a Division 1 Athletics Liaison for the single smallest D1 College in the nation, Cameron has also worked for the university serving the largest population of first-generation college students in North Carolina. Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring is a new technology designed to simplify and enhance the convenience of monitoring blood glucose levels for individuals with diabetes. Trilogy Technologies, a company specializing in non-invasive medical devices, has developed a device that not only detects blood glucose levels but also measures uric acid and total cholesterol levels. This device provides a painless and convenient method for individuals with diabetes to monitor their blood glucose levels, a significant improvement over traditional methods that require finger pricking.Non-invasive blood glucose monitoringThis device is considered a game changer in the market as it eliminates the need for traditional methods such as drawing blood and testing it in certified labs. Pre-clinical trials have been conducted on the device, and it has demonstrated an accuracy rate of 93.49% compared to the golden standard. The device is compact and user-friendly, requiring no needles or jabs, thus offering a painless experience. To use the device, it is simply pressed against the skin and held lightly. Within 40 seconds, the device displays the blood glucose, uric acid, and total cholesterol levels. The values can also be streamed to Android phones or iPhones for easy tracking and monitoring. The device stands out for its simplicity. It is a one-time purchase with no need for a subscription. It is rechargeable, allowing for easy and ready use. An accompanying app provides data analysis, assisting users in tracking their health and promoting self-care.One of the key advantages of this non-invasive blood glucose monitoring device is its affordability. As it does not require expensive patches or continuous supplies, individuals can purchase the device and use it for an extended period of time. Furthermore, all the analysis is done within the device itself, eliminating the need for data to be sent to the cloud, thereby ensuring privacy and avoiding potential risks.Bringing the product to market and beyondThe device has been well-received, with many seeing it as a potential solution to the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, particularly diabetes. It is believed that this device could benefit millions of people, reducing the pain and frustration of monitoring blood glucose levels. It allows people with diabetes and other issues to check their levels anywhere at any time without risk of pain or contamination.Currently, Trilogy Technologies is conducting clinical trials to obtain FDA approval for their device. This step is crucial to ensure the device meets the required standards for accuracy and safety. It is expected that the device will be available for consumers in the third or fourth quarter of the year.Trilogy Technologies has expressed hope for widespread support of the product. The company's goal is to enhance human health and encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own well-being. A release date in 2024 is being targeted. Conclusion: Trilogy Technologies is fixing blood glucose monitoringIn conclusion, this innovative device, the non-invasive blood glucose monitor developed by Trilogy Technologies, has the potential to significantly improve personal health, especially for individuals with diabetes. Its simplicity, affordability, and potential to revolutionize blood glucose monitoring could have a significant impact on personal health and well-being. 89, 9-9, SHOW NOTES & COPYRIGHTS, (Scheduled 2/2/2023) Today we will be reading and discussing 3 poems from the Last Notebook, an umpublished manuscript from 2020.March 29, 2020An interesting evening last night and an interesting morning today. Interesting, more like enlightening. The following poem is a result of last night's revelation from God. This morning when I opened my Bible, it opened to Psalm 31. This was not of my doing. I know that the poem is rather cryptic. But is what I believe I was lead to write.Psalm 31For the director of music. A psalm of David1 In you, LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness, 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me LORD, my faithful God. (NIV)BEWAREYesterday my world was turned upside down,Or so I thought.I had been caughtBelieving the lieAnd was wondering whyThe words of the songWere ever so wrong.Jesus often said, “Let those who have ears hear,And those who have eyes see.”What did I hold dear? What would I be?So many times we were warnedBy the voices the world scorned. We were told to take beware. We were told to take care.I had believed more than one false teacher. For that there is no rhyme. My focus was still Jesus,God's Son who saved us.But there are those who changed God's wordSo often through songs we have heard.Yesterday I was given sightInto the darkening lightOf too often believingThose who are deceiving. One can say Jesus is LordTo the lost earthly horde. But what lies behind the wordThey have sung that we have heard? When the singing does end,What message do they send?We must understandThis has been planned,Beyond the song,For way too long.May our faith be strong. Our God is never changing. We are not to be rearrangingHis word spoken that we have heard.Jesus is the Word.He is all we need. Our needs he does fed. There is nothing beyondThe word of God,Nothing to add to it.Look beyond the songThrough faith strong.Look beyond the song book.Look for the hook.My world turned upside down. No, it was set rightSo I would not drown. In truth there is no fright.3/29/2020, tcarterDiscussion:NEVER FORSAKENThose who know Your name trust You, for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek You. Episode Summary:In this episode of SaaS Origin Stories, Phil Alves is joined by Dani Grant, CEO, and Co-Founder at Jam.dev. This successful SaaS startup offers developers and project managers a fast and reliable debugging solution. Dani shares her insights on the different ingredients that make up a successful startup, including funding, attaining product market fit, and working with small and agile teams. Along the way, she also busts some commonly-held startup myths.Guest at a Glance:Name: Dani GrantWhat she does: Dani is the CEO and Co-Founder at Jam.dev, a SaaS startup that offers a fast and reliable debugging solution. Connect with Dani: LinkedInTopics we cover:Don't start without concept validation Investor meetings: how to ace themIs product market fit enough on your mind?Myth Busting - #1 - Go-to-market speed is criticalMyth Busting - #2 - Ship fast; just get it in front of the customerKey Takeaways:Worry About Concept Validation Before Thinking About Market ValidationThe concept of fast and reliable debugging software was born out of Dani's struggles while working as a project manager at Cloudflare, where project delays due to endless communications cycles on bugs and fixes were endemic. So the concept of Jam.dev was to deliver software that would speed up the debugging process. To validate the concept, she connected with over 50 project managers across various industries to understand if the problem was universal. Validating your idea is the first brick of your SaaS startup and a nifty talking point when in front of investors. We interviewed over 50 project managers across different industries to check if this was an issue they faced as well.Be Who Your Investors are Looking For - Helpful Tips for Investor MeetsDani spent two years at a VC listening to pitches, and she offers her insights on the typical investor's playbook. The investor's appetite is minimal, so how and what you pitch is critical. Don't focus on the investment you need; instead, focus on making the meeting a great experience for the investor. One that they will remember for a while and hence remember your proposal. Face-to-face meetings are better than Zoom meetings. Keep your answers short and engaging, don't jump into micro details. Offer a top view and then move on to offer further details. Make your meetings memorable. When answering questions, give a high-level overview first and then offer to go into details. You're now letting the VC steer the conversation.Achieving Product Market Fit and BeyondThe amount of mind space you devote to thinking about product market fit depends on the evolution stage of your startup. It should be front and center leading up to the launch and a couple of quarters down the line, and the retention rate is a good indicator of fit level. As the retention rate stabilizes, start thinking about how to tweak your product to improve the fit, customer feedback is vital at this stage. Once you achieve the desired PMF, other business priorities will occupy your mind, and you will think less about PMF. We moved from living and breathing PMF to not thinking about it, and we probably achieved our product market fit somewhere in between. Myth Busting - Go to Market Speed is Critical - Don't Reiterate the PrototypeOnce you have your prototype, don't think of it as the Holy Grail, which doesn't need fixing. Spending a few weeks revisiting your prototype and making required changes and upgrades can save you valuable time that you would spend on improving the framework post-launch. Pre-launch delays are less costly than post-launch ones. Spending a few weeks or even a month reiterating your prototype allows you to set a solid foundation and move faster one or two years down the line.Myth Busting - It Will Never Be 100% Right, so Ship Fast is Better Than Ship RightThe conventional logic says to get the product in front of the customer as fast as possible. But shipping a buggy product that is still a work in progress is a recipe for disaster. Dani gives the example of her startup, where they iterated the base software for 18 months before taking it to the market. At every iteration, they would use it as a customer to check if the software did everything it promised. In a SaaS environment, people rely on software to do their daily tasks, which must work every time.

In this highly requested solo episode, I share my key strategies on how to crush it in your career and win over your boss.I wasn't always in the position that I am in today. In fact, I recall being a university graduate with almost no industry experience. When I graduated from university I did not have any mentors or anyone to give me advice. All I had was my laptop, the internet and seek.com. I applied for 100+ jobs until I finally landed an interview with a cosmetics company. With my very minimal experience, the interviewers saw something in me and decided to give me a chance.Whilst landing my first ‘proper' job felt like a huge accomplishment at the time, that was only the beginning. I had to work extremely hard to get to the position I am today. I truly started from the ground up. But through consistency, determination and a positive mindset, I was able to quickly move past my entry-level position and start making my mark in the corporate world. In this episode, you'll learn:Key strategies I utilised to make a mark in my career, receive sizeable pay increases and win over all of my bossesWhy you should say yes to opportunities before you feel readyThe role of direct and indirect mentors in your career, and how to find oneHow to exceed expectations and why it pays to go above and beyondThe importance of knowing your worth and the value you bring to the marketplaceIf you enjoy this episode, please take a moment to subscribe, rate and review the Boss in Heels Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Please also recommend the podcast to a friend, family member, colleague or someone in your network who you know would benefit from listening to these episodes. You could say that Brin Amberlee isn't a traditional real estate investor. She doesn't have tons of experience with property management, construction, or investing, but she does have the will to succeed. As a quick recap from last week, the first 4 tips were:1. Update LinkedInThe first tip is all around LinkedIn. Make sure you are keeping your profile up to date and when you do make changes, that you turn your profile notifications off. Also be careful about what information you put out there and I'd also suggest not tagging your profile with Looking for opportunities.2. Keep your job hunt a secret at work The second tip I have and what would seem obvious to some is to keep your job hunt or dissatisfaction at work to yourself. It's competitive in the big 4 and you never know who is going to use that info to try to get ahead. We also talked about how to talk to your Partner or Director in case they ask you if you are job hunting and I gave some tips and a sample of what you can say back to that ask. 3. Be Smart on Social MediaThe third tip I had is similar to not sharing your job hunt at work but goes further to say - be smart on social media. You may be on private but you may have some people in your work network online or at least friends of friends and as you know, gossip spreads like wildfire in a big 4. 4. Don't publicly post your resumeThe fourth tip I have is to be smart about where you upload your resume. I know you want to leave your big 4 job, but don't post your resume somewhere publicly where someone can find it. Big 4 recruiters are looking for candidates all the time and may stumble across your resume. Be smart about how you apply. So now that we have a recap of the first 4 tips, lets jump into the next 4 tips. 5. Stop going above and beyondThe fifth tip I have on how to job search while working is my favorite. It's to stop going above and beyond. If you know you want to change jobs and you need more time to do other things, then start saying no to extra projects or other things that take you away from your actual job. I mean, what are they going to do, fire you? Never – you know they don't do that and honestly, it would make it so much easier if they did. Now, saying no may not be easy, as I know you're probably an over-achiever like I was, but think about what that extra work is going to do for you. It's only going to get you stressed and give you less time to job hunt and interview. And to be real, that extra work isn't what gets you promoted. It's the actual work your rated on. That extra work helps you stand out only if your work doesn't do it for you. So start saying no. So if you never said no, how do you start?Find the Full Show Notes Here.

In this episode Anni talks to Dawn Whittaker, Chief Fire Officer and CEO of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, as well as NFCC lead for Drowning Prevention and Water Safety.Anni and Dawn talk about how early experiences ignited Dawn's passion for safety and why as a leader she is committed to nurturing both physical and psychological safety. Background and career influencesGrowing up on a farm in Wales, Dawn learned to be pragmatic and safety-conscious at an early age. Along with her sister, she was a keen member of the Brownies, Guides and Rangers - always actively involved in team and community projects. She believes this to be a trait inherited from parents and grandparents. However, her real interest in fire safety was sparked on an Outward Bound course, whilst working for a company. Dawn was frustrated at the organiser's failure to conduct any health safety briefings about fire exits and so after checking local procedures, she undertook a fire safety drill. “I think they all thought I'd lost the plot,” she reflects. In terms of her interest in water safety, it was a near drowning experience aged just 16 that had a lasting impact. Dawn is now the national lead for water safety and drowning prevention for the National Fire Chiefs Council in the UK, heading up the Be Water Aware campaign. The aim is to promote safe use of recreational water spaces.Dawn wasn't always within the Fire Service however. In her early career she worked in the retail sector with The John Lewis Partnership, before moving into a managerial performance role at a County Council. Both roles led her to develop a passion for quality customer service and communication - something she has carried into her role at the Fire Service for over 17 years. Fighting fires during a pandemicDawn discusses the impact of the pandemic and praises her team who have worked tirelessly. In addition to provision of standard services, the Fire Service has been collaborating with partners like the Coastguard and supporting the local Ambulance Service with much-needed drivers through the pandemicHowever, she admits the pandemic has been tough on the service. Not least because it meant finding new ways to engage with the public. But also because many of her staff members have had to manage their duties alongside the emotional, financial and physical burden of Covid-19.“People might think firefighters, and our staff are all heroes and superheroes, and superhuman, but, do you know what, we're just people,” says Dawn.Inspirational leaders and inclusivityDawn reveals the many leaders who have inspired her journey, including colleagues from John Lewis and existing and retired Fire Service leaders like David Archer and Bruce Hoad, both of whom she praises for their commitment to driving inclusivity and equality in the service.Driving diversity is something close to Dawn's heart. She talks about being a role model and "holding a mirror up".Listen to the episode to discover:How childhood role models can shape actions in adult lifeCommunity values and teamworkSupporting employee wellbeing during the pandemic and beyondThe importance of collaboration in the communityWhy inclusivity and diversity is essential to the future workforce Celebrating human differences and the value these can bringFour key things all leaders should think about to unlock their potentialDiscover more and connect with DawnFor more information on East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service visit esfrs.orgYou can connect with Dawn Whittaker directly on LinkedIn.

Laurie Maddalena’s vision is to create a place where people love to come to work. Gallup has found in its most recent workforce study, she says, that only about 34% of American employees feel engaged at work.“Most people don’t enjoy their work and I think a lot of that has to do with leadership, the quality of leadership we have in our organizations,” says Maddalena, CEO of Envision Excellence, a leadership consulting firm that provides leadership development programs for managers and executives, keynote speeches, team building and leadership assessments. As antidote, Maddalena recommends leaders look to be “modern” leaders, focused on facilitating people doing the work, not fixing problems themselves. Modern leaders get to know their employees and place high value on the people side of the business, she says. New leaders sometimes struggle with taking a modern leadership approach because they have been promoted because they are technically adept—not because they have leadership skills. So instead of leading in the modern, they are more likely to lead as they were led, in a more traditional, directive rather than facilitating way.According to Maddalena, new leaders often struggle with: Getting focused. This could be because they haven’t had the necessary leadership training or aren’t getting enough guidance from their leader.Delegation. New leaders might think their technical skills are most important, when in fact their job as leader is to facilitate other people’s work.Supporting their staff’s engagement. Engagement comes when leaders step back and facilitate solutions rather than fixing things themselves, she says.To overcome these challenges, Maddalena recommends that new leaders:Ask for training and other help preparing for their new role.Look deeply at their leadership style and constantly develop themselves.Shift their mentality about leadership. “Leadership is a privilege and it’s a responsibility,” she explains. “It’s not a hat we wear. True leadership is service.”“I often say, ‘If it weren’t for the people, leadership would be easy,’” Maddalena adds. “Preparing yourself to be of service to people” is a key part of the job. In the show, Maddalena says it’s hard for people to lead in a modern way. Leadership training is important both for new and experienced leaders to continue to evolve.“We need active leadership” more than ever during the pandemic, she says, “meaning reaching out and checking in. People are really stressed. It’s going to take more energy and effort” than ever.“Our job as leaders is to focus on the people and facilitate the people side of the business,” she underscores. “The technical side will get done. But the people are who put the effort in to get the results, so we need to make sure that’s a big focus.”The show also gets into:How Laurie Maddalena fell in love with credit unionsLaurie’s favorite quote from Zig Ziglar and how that applies to leadershipPerspective on how leadership is the same or different during a crisis like the pandemicMaddalena’s assessment of leadership readiness at credit unions during the pandemic and beyondThe value of modeling leadershipThe CUES Emerge program and how Laurie Maddalena and her consultancy supported it

The Journey Continues: Barzakh and BeyondThe literal meaning of Barzakh to be a veil or a “curtain” which lies between two things, preventing them from meeting each other. In the context of the different phases of life, Barzakh is the state of existence between the life of this world and the Hereafter; the “curtain” which Allah has placed between the two worlds. It as being a period beginning from death until the Day of Judgment (Bihar al-Anwar); indeed, as mentioned in the Holy Qur'an itself, "Before us is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day we are raised (23:100). This verse is a clear indication that man certainly has a life after death but before the Day of Judgment. The exact nature of this life and what it will entail, we do not know, but our Imams have enlightened us of it to some degree through their various Hadiths.Sometimes a dead person is faced with trouble and difficulty when, suddenly, Allah grants him peace and prosperity. It is said unto him: “This is so because your such and such brother in faith has recited prayers on your behalf. A person asked him, ‘Can two dead persons be included in the same prayer?'” The Imam replied: “Yes, you can do so, for verily the dead man becomes happy when this prayer reaches him through you… Perform prayers, fasting, pilgrimage, give alms and do other good deeds on their behalf, for these enter his grave and is also written in his scrolls of deeds (Nam-e A'maal).
