The need to move SMBs from Tactics to Strategy & how fractional CMO's can do that:  John Jantsch is a seasoned consultant, speaker, and bestselling author, notably recognized for his Duct Tape Marketing brand. He shares his journey of owning an agency for 30 years, highlighting his affinity for small to midsize businesses and the challenges they face, especially regarding budget and focus. Jantsch's Duct Tape Marketing was his solution to the market's need for effective and straightforward marketing services. Over time, his approach evolved into licensing his methodology to other agencies and consultants. In the last five years, Jantsch has pivoted towards offering fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) services, capitalizing on the growing acceptance and need for part-time executive roles. He explains that the fractional CMO concept is cost-effective, providing senior marketing leadership at a fraction of the cost of a full-time CMO, particularly beneficial for companies with revenues under $30 million.Jantsch observes an increasing demand for strategic marketing services, partly due to the market's rapid changes and the desire for differentiation among agencies. He notes that while there is a prevalent focus on lead generation and short-term goals in the industry, there's a growing recognition of the value of strategic planning, especially for businesses crossing the million-dollar revenue threshold.Helping agencies to increase profits by developing their own fractional CMO capacity:  In the second part of the interview, John Jantsch delves into the challenges and nuances of adopting a fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) role within agencies. He acknowledges the difficulty agencies face when shifting from execution-focused services to strategic consulting, especially with existing clients who may not perceive them in this new light. Jantsch suggests that offering strategic services as an add-on and targeting a more ideal client base can facilitate this transition. He critiques the common misunderstanding of having a marketing "plan" when businesses merely execute isolated tactics without a cohesive strategy. Jantsch emphasizes the importance of a targeted approach, focusing on the top 20% of customers and aligning marketing efforts with the entire customer journey, which he represents through the "marketing hourglass" concept. This approach entails understanding the customer's needs, refining messaging, and integrating strategic content creation.Jantsch also discusses the foundational phase of client engagement, where he insists on starting with a strategy phase, lasting about 45 days, to build trust and set the groundwork for further marketing efforts. This phase allows for the identification of a client's true challenges and needs, fostering a relationship where the agency transitions from a vendor to a trusted advisor. He highlights the importance of the CMO as the advocate for the customer within the company, ensuring that the entire customer experience, from initial contact through sales and service, aligns with the strategic marketing plan. Jantsch's approach underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of the client's business processes, which is crucial for delivering effective marketing solutions and establishing a long-term partnership. How to begin implementing a fractional CMO relationship with your client:  In the final part of the interview, John Jantsch discusses building trust and managing dynamics within client organizations as a fractional CMO. He notes the common presence of internal politics and resistance, but emphasizes that many organizations lack strategic direction, making them receptive to outside expertise. In the second part of our conversation, I ask Carol about the role of the tuba in the brass section and also the orchestra, and how her interpretation changes when playing with the different brass instruments, and how she adapts for different styles.  Carol has premiered solo works by Michael Daugherty and Wynton Marsalis, both written for her,  so I ask her to take us through the process of working with two different composers and the give-and-take process of bringing a new work to life.

Carol Jantsch made history in 2006 when she won the position of principal tuba with the Philadelphia Orchestra, becoming the first woman to win such a position in a major American orchestra. But even more impressive is that she won the chair while she was still in her senior year at the University of Michigan. Noted not only for her orchestral playing, she is a brilliant soloist, and in addition to her solo recitals has appeared with numerous orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra. Her career serves as an inspiration to young women throughout the world. When she was 14 years old, Carol was third tuba in the band at the Interlocken Arts Academy, but by the age of 18 was in the semi-finals for the principal tuba position of the New York Philharmonic and two years later won the principal position with the Philadelphia Orchestra, a position she still holds. So in Part 1, we discuss in depth her transition from being a student to becoming a professional.

Businesses today face the challenge of balancing their core values with the realities of the digital age — an age that has customers expect 24/7 access to brands. Surprisingly, the brands that put their customers first have survived even the worst phases of the pandemic, according to best-selling author and returning guest on Brainfluence, John Jantsch. Notes & Resources: https://www.rogerdooley.com/john-jantsch-engine/ John advocates customer-centric marketing and brings us lessons from his most recent book, The Ultimate Marketing Engine: 5 Steps to Ridiculously Consistent Growth. He talks about the importance of focusing less on generating “more” leads. Rather, you should enhance the buying experience of your existing customers to generate organic referrals and leads. He explains how strategically (and authentically) partnering with your top 20% customers does your business more good than investing in lead generation. John also reveals his 5-step marketing process that helps discover and map businesses to their ideal customers. Consistent business growth in today's times depends almost entirely on the quality of customer experience offered. Improve it and your customers will take your business to the next level before you  know it. Tune in to the conversation to learn more!

How To Avoid The Vicious Cycle Of Playing Small

Today we are talking all about playing small. Now, this is something a lot of us do early on in our business but sometimes it carries well into our business journey, or it can even cut short our journey that we are trying to find our way on.  The reason for this is that when we play small, we sabotage ourselves. Not intentionally of course, but we do get into a mindset of minimalism and even defeat. We keep looking for evidence of why we shouldn’t go bigger and find it because, well, that’s what we’re looking for.  Whereas, if we were looking for reasons to go bigger and celebrating our successes, we could find that too. So what I’m saying, is that if we go all in, we have a better chance for success than if we play small. Of course, going big can be scary and require you to put yourself out there in a way you aren’t used to. “Small is easy, small doesn’t attract attention, small is comfortable, small doesn’t offend, small doesn’t raise eyebrows, small keeps that little voice in your head quiet, small doesn’t hurt as much when you fall – and small keeps you right where you are.” - John Jantsch, Duct Tape Marketing Now, I know a lot of you come to Side Hustle Teachers because you aren’t happy right where you are, but if you keep playing small, that’s where you’re going to stay.  I want to emphasize that by going all in I DON’T mean to quit your job, sell your house, live off ramen noodles, and basically be a bag lady. Going all in means that you are standing up and proudly identifying yourself as a business owner. It means you tell people you know that you have a business, you celebrate your successes, and it means when people ask you what you do you say, “I’m a teacher AND I’m a business owner.” Now this can be a big shift but it is possible and it is so worth it.  Here are some ways that entrepreneurs could be playing small. Number 1: You use minimizing language.  One of the ways to look at this is called “upspeak,” and it’s when you turn every sentence into a question. It could be as simple as adding, “right?” to the end of a statement. Or it could be using filler words. But the worst culprit here is using “just.” “I don’t want to bother you, I’m just checking in,” or “I have this business, it’s just a little side thing I do.” See how easily we slip that in there to minimize what we’re doing, not to raise eyebrows like Mr. Jantsch said?  We all want to fly under the radar until magically one day we can announce that we’re a millionaire but that isn’t going to happen if we keep minimizing ourselves. Number 2: You pretend your business is a dirty little secret.  No one’s going to buy anything from you, whether it’s products or services, if you don’t tell them about it! Now, I’m not saying you need to DM everyone on facebook that you went to highschool with, nobody likes that person, but what I am saying is that you have to let people know you have a business. If you have a blog, share posts with your friends and family. If you have a business with physical products, let people know when something is on sale. You may not know what people want, but if you keep it from them, but if they don’t know what you have to offer, they’re going to go buy that something from somebody else. Number 3: You set small goals.  Now the problem with many new business owners is that we set micro-goals, but those are the only goals we have. Micro-goals are those baby step goals that are supposed to be working us to something bigger. But these goals like, “I want to sell one thing this month,” or, “I want ten page views,” don’t result in much change and they aren’t going to bring success. There’s nothing wrong with setting these micro-goals, but they have to be leading to something. Maybe you set an overall goal of 10,000 page views a month but you realize last month you only had five. So maybe your first goal is 100 so you need to work toward that by sharing your post and asking friends to share it with someone they think might enjoy it. Number 4: You only focus on the worst case scenario.  What if I tell everyone I started this business and it doesn’t work? What if I put myself out there but then have to later explain I’m no longer selling that, I’m doing this other thing? To all that, I say...SO WHAT? If anyone has followed my journey, you know that nobody's path is straight. If you start off one way but end up somewhere else, no one is going to judge you, they’re going to congratulate you for finding your very own “just right” business. So instead, try and focus on the best case scenario. What could go right? Success is different to everyone, so just think about how your life could be so much better if you reach your own level of success. As I said before, if you play it small, you hold yourself back from making big decisions that could lead you to success. So just to recap, instead of saying what you shouldn’t do, let me phrase it in a way of what you SHOULD do. Commit to going all in. Tell yourself and everyone you know, “this is my goal and this is how I’ll do it.” Replace that minimizing language. Catch yourself when you start using “just,” or answering in the form of a question. This isn’t Jeopardy. Own your answers, they’re from your own unique life experiences. Tell people about your business. Nobody can buy anything from you if they don’t know you have something to sell.  Set bigger goals for yourself. They should stretch you and make you uncomfortable.  Dream big. Let the worst case scenario worry about itself. Think about the best case scenario, spend your time there, and your whole perception of your business will shift. If you aren’t sure which side hustle business fits best with your interests and lifestyle, go to sidehustleteachers.com/quiz. He has interviewed thousands of guests and appeared on the other side of the mic, as a guest, hundreds of times. Dr. Sabrina was a recent guest on John’s Duct Tape Marketing podcast. Show Highlights: John’s previous books were “how-to’s”, but he had a desire to write a book that was more of a “why-to”. His mission has always been to bring life back into being an entrepreneur. John describes the basis for his book, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, and how the 1850s was one of the first counter-culture periods in America. We have to develop a level of trust and stop letting outside and subconscious voices control us.  This level of trust allows us to focus on the things we can control, which is how we show up and how we respond to everything that happens. A great deal of stress comes about by trying to control those things that aren’t in our control. Dr. Sabrina shares how we can develop self-trust and the two practices in her life that taught her to listen to her own voice: journaling and meditation. The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur ends each daily passage with a powerful question and provides us with an opportunity to think about life and circumstances from a different perspective. This can allow us to shift our mindset and yield new insights and opportunities for us. John reads the passage and question that corresponds with Dr. Sabrina’s birthday. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Dr. Sabrina divulges her next book: The 4 Week Vacation John’s answer is that every time he answers that question, he goes ahead and does it. Therefore, his answer is constantly evolving. He also relates that the next big challenge is to figure out a way to maximize his assets. Duct Tape Marketing is For Sale! A surprising challenge is figuring out who we are when we step away from the business that is so much a part of our identity. It’s important to have clarity around your mission. According to John, when people understand their true core values and they release the need to have a perfectly-refined purpose, the purpose will find them. Listening to her clients' needs is a way that helped Dr. Sabrina discover her gifts to share in the world. Stepping outside his comfort zone has enabled John to stretch and grow. Staying at the top of the mountain is beautiful scenery, but not much learning and growth happens there.  Links and Resources: Get Ready for 2020!! The Referral Engine by John Jantsch  Click here for the show notes! https://www.salesartillery.com/marketing-book-podcast/the-referral-engine-john-jantsch The small business guru behind Duct Tape Marketing shares his most valuable lesson: how to get your customers to do your best marketing for you. The power of glitzy advertising and elaborate marketing campaigns is on the wane; word- of-mouth referrals are what drive business today. People trust the recommendation of a friend, family member, colleague, or even stranger with similar tastes over anything thrust at them by a faceless company. Most business owners believe that whether customers refer them is entirely out of their hands. But science shows that people can't help recommending products and services to their friends-it's an instinct wired deep in the brain. And smart businesses can tap into that hardwired desire. Marketing expert John Jantsch offers practical techniques for harnessing the power of referrals to ensure a steady flow of new customers. Keep those customers happy, and they will refer your business to even more customers. Some of Jantsch's strategies include: -Talk with your customers, not at them. Thanks to social networking sites, companies of any size have the opportunity to engage with their customers on their home turf as never before-but the key is listening. -The sales team is the most important part of your marketing team. Salespeople are the company's main link to customers, who are the main source of referrals. Getting them on board with your referral strategy is critical. -Educate your customers. Referrals are only helpful if they're given to the right people. Educate your customers about whom they should be talking to. The secret to generating referrals lies in understanding the "Customer Referral Cycle" -the way customers refer others to your company who, in turn, generate even more referrals. Businesses can ensure a healthy referral cycle by moving customers and prospects along the path of Know, Like, Trust, Try, Buy, Repeat, and Refer. If everyone in an organization keeps this sequence in mind, Jantsch argues, your business will generate referrals like a well-oiled machine. This practical, smart, and original guide is essential reading for any company looking to grow without a fat marketing budget.

Carol Jantsch is a stunning virtuoso musician, which is perhaps even more remarkable for the fact that she performs on an instrument that isn't typically known for its virtuoso capabilities. As you'll hear in this interview, Carol thrives on hearing folks exclaim, “I never knew the tuba could sound like that!” I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Carol after a reading rehearsal together, and learned that she is not only a musical virtuoso, but between her varied interests in ultimate frisbee, distance running, reading voraciously and writing her own solo and ensemble arrangements for her tuba cover band, “Tubular”, she is also a virtuoso in the art of living. “SEO isn’t done unless your done growing.” Growth is something that John Jantsch has helped countless small businesses with in his decades of experience. As the author of the classic Duct Tape Marketing and founder of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network, Janstch has written five books on marketing. His latest, SEO for Growth, asks marketers and brand builders to rethink how they think about SEO. About John Jantsch John Jantsch is a marketing consultant, speaker and author of Duct Tape Marketing, Duct Tape Selling, The Commitment Engine, and The Referral Engine and the founder of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network. His latest book, SEO for Growth - The Ultimate Guide for Marketers, Web Designers, and Entrepreneurs, is changing the way the world thinks about SEO. Episode Highlights Why SEO? Why now? John noted that he gets this question a lot. “I wanted to change the mindset around this. SEO is a huge driver of growth. PR is a channel, content is a channel — so is SEO.” Yet too many view SEO as tactical. Something done after the fact. “They say, ‘we’re done with the campaign — now it’s time to SEO it.’" SEO for growth starts strategically. "You have to know who your customer is. You have to do keyword research and spend time on forums, Wikipedia, Google’s keyword manager, KeywordTool.io, and more.” SEO is not an easy box to check. What about SEO and branding? “Take out everything like the logo and the real workhorse of branding is messaging.” That gets you back to SEO. How do you position your brand around the people and problems that you serve? "We overcomplicate SEO.” While many SEO firms focus on how complex Google’s search factors are, Jantsch asks businesses to get strategic and systematic with SEO. How do we get started? “Make an editorial calendar for the year. Map out your topics and themes by month. This leaves you with both a content and an SEO asset. It’s like the confluence of rivers — when they merge there’s something new." What brand has made John smile recently? “The Hello Happiness Card Company makes me smile so much — I’m wearing their shirt today!” John loves reading the adventures of the founders via their email newsletter. Most businesses come up with all of their products and services first, and then go out and try to market them. But what about developing those things with your audience, in a collaborative fashion? Sort of like taking a "find them first and see what they need" approach. The key to any good marketing strategy is to market to the key audience that wants what you have, but what’s the most effective way? And if you find one platform or channel that works, should you just stick with that or add others to your repertoire? Try concentrating on your strengths and what is already working and then simply building upon that. A strong foundation is a great starting point, then slowly try casting your net deeper versus wider. John Jantsch is the marketing guy to look to if you're a small business trying to grow. His simple and effective approach to marketing can turn even the hardest cynics into believers once they start seeing real results from his effective marketing strategies.   www.agentsofchangecon.com/podcasts/130

Tubas for Girls, Harps for Boys: Shaking Gender Roles Among Instrumentalists

Conducting Business

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2015 19:08

According to several recent studies, young musicians are still following traditional gender stereotypes when they choose an instrument. Girls at a young age go for what they perceive as "feminine" instruments, such as the flute, piccolo, violin, and clarinet; boys gravitate towards trumpets, tubas and percussion. Kids’ views of masculinity and femininity can lead to other problems; for instance, boys who take up the flute are more susceptible to social isolation and bullying. Hal Abeles, the co-director of the Center for Arts Education Research at Columbia University's Teachers College, cites several reasons that these gender perceptions persist: a lack of role models, the physical size of an instrument, and general societal pressures. "Adolescents, males in particular, get intimidated by not being with the majority," he tells host Naomi Lewin. "So if the majority of students in your middle school who are playing flute are girls, young boys feel 'I want to belong.'" Abeles co-authored a 2014 study in the journal Music Education Research, which found that choosing the "wrong instrument" can provoke young students to drop out of instrumental music completely as they face online "cyber-bullying" and other forms of harassment. But our guests note that instrument-based stereotypes vary from culture to culture. Sivan Magen, a New York-based harpist, said he experienced few harp stereotypes growing up in Israel, "Especially in the States, it has become a woman's instrument." Magen notes that among his eight harpist classmates at the Paris Conservatory, four were male. Being strong-willed and successful can lessen a student's risk for harassment. Carol Jantsch, the principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra, says she never got grief from her classmates as a kid in Ohio. "If you're good at your instrument, your peers don't care what you play," she said. But today, she'll occasionally encounter conductors who use the phrase "gentlemen of the brass." "Usually I'll cough very loudly and they'll correct themselves after that," she noted (Jantsch appears in Part Two of this segment). Ricky O'Bannon, a writer in residence at the Baltimore Symphony, recently interviewed several teachers about this issue. Among his takeaways: It's better for teachers not to address the issue in the classroom. "The moment you start saying 'this instrument is not just for girls or not just for boys'" is the kiss of death, he noted. "Teachers are also playing YouTube videos in classrooms of counter-stereotypes," such as a beatboxing flutist. "It's about having a child find the instrument that they're going to enjoy and not having any extra pressures on that." Listen to the full segment at the top of this page and please tell us what you think below: have you experienced gender associations with an instrument? What can be done to lessen these?

I had an interesting interaction in Kansas City with the Budget rental car company. I am a Budget Fast Break member, which means that I get to reserve my car in advance and then arrive to the location with a car waiting for me. In this situation however, I arrived to my space and there was no car.The woman in the office told me they were sold out and all they had available was a mini van. And it bothered me because what's the point of my Fast Break membership if there's no car available for me?The situation wouldn't have been so unpleasant if she had said the two magic words of business:"I'm sorry."If you can teach everyone in your company to be sorry when things go wrong, or at least say sorry even if it wasn't your fault, people will respond more favorably to your overall business, especially in sticky situations.SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/jaybaer00SPROUT SOCIAL SHOUT OUTToday's Sprout Social shout out goes to John Jantsch (http://twitter.com/ducttape), an expert marketer, author of many books, an amazing public speaker, and a guy worth following in social media. NBN10 Show Notes Listen to episode 10 in iTunes or Stitcher. Please take a moment to leave me an audio comment. Record one now. How Duct Tape Marketing came to be. John shares the challenges small businesses face in online marketing. John has been blogging since 2002/2003 at Duct Tape Marketing. It seemed like a simple way for him to create lots of content. The 4 reasons you should create a blog: 1. It makes you easier to find.2. It gives you a platform to demonstrate your expertise.3. It makes you show up higher in search engines.4. It gives you and your customers, prospects and partners content you can share. Consistently producing valuable content has to be part of it. It doesn't matter what you put it on or what you call it. Ninety percent of the world needs a platform and a tool to make it easy to create and to produce content their prospects and clients want to find. We talk about John's new book, Duct Tape Selling: Think Like a Marketer-Sell Like a Superstar. John calls social networks “out posts”. You need to view them as ways to drive people back to your blog or newsletter. You have to always believe you are renting the space of social networks. Building a firm foundation is important. We talk about time management and family.  Check out my interview with Mark Schaefer about this too. If sales people want to survive, they are going to have to start learning how to use social media in a more effective way. They need to start to produce content that builds individual authority and expertise. “Marketing is ruining social media.” John's current favorite app is Word Swag - Cool fonts, typography generator, creative quotes, and text over pic editor. I've been using it to create the quote graphics for the show. "Behind every success business, there's an entrepreneur who's pretty sure she's screwing it up." IMAGE. I am thrilled to kick off a week-long series about pricing in small business with an interview with John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing.  John is a well-known authority on small business marketing who has a very popular blog and speaking platform. Despite his solid business background and decades of experience, the thing I like best about John is that he absolutely walks his talk. He is extremely grounded, kind and generous with his knowledge. Listen to the 30-minute interview here. Some of my favorite parts of the conversation: "Price is a terrible place to compete. There will always be someone willing to go out of business faster than you."There can be a backlash if you price your services too low, because your customers might think there is something wrong with you if you charge below the market, or that you cannot deliver the value promised in your offer."If people keep saying 'gosh, you are too expensive!' all that means is that you are not doing a good enough job educating them on why you are different."Measure the results of your efforts by following up with your clients to see what value you produced by working with them. This can give you fantastic data, case studies, testimonials and a strong foundation for referrals. You can find John at www.ducttapemarketing.com.  Also, check out his new course on Social Media Marketing at www.ducttapeu.com --- Tomorrow's guest expert on pricing will be Mark Silver from Heart of Business.
