What makes Gen Z different from other generations in the workplace? How can an organization help all generations work their best? And what can senior leaders do to foster trust in a multi-generational workplace? In this episode of the On Aon podcast, Helen Payne and Anna Hislop discuss generational dynamics in the workforce.  Experts in this episode: Helen Payne, Global Director of Human Sustainability, AonAnna Hislop, Leadership Coach and Author, You Only Have to Ask, How to Realize the Full Potential of Gen Z at Work Key Moments: [1:37] What makes Gen Z different from other generations in the workforce[3:36] How senior leaders can build trust in the workplace[7:19] Other generations in the workforce[9:06] Examples of companies fostering high-performance across generations  Additional Resources:2025 Employee Sentiment StudyAnna Hislop, Leadership CoachYou Only Have to Ask, How to Realize the Full Potential of Gen Z at Work Soundbites: “Understanding and appreciating what all generations bring to the workplace is key to have a thriving team or a thriving company.” Anna Hislop“This generation (Gen Z) was shaped by quite an unstable world during their formative years. We had the economic instability during the Great Recession and what that did to their parents and other adults in their life. This is when conversations were had around the table of, I don't want to be just a number or I've dedicated so much time and so many years to this company and now I'm being laid off. There's no loyalty there to be had. So this is what shaped the younger employees and they're really working hard not to make the same mistakes as their older siblings or parents did.” — Anna Hislop“They're looking for a caring leader and they're looking for a leader who will give them clarity and direction. And they will work hard if they feel that they have the support, they know who cares about them and they know what they are expecting to achieve and do in their role.” — Anna Hislop

“We created a wellness paradigm that is very different from the first wellness establishments - from a yoga studio, to a wellness resort, to apps - and created a holistic approach that makes scientific sense, that makes common sense. That actually makes people understand the reality of what we are in today, rather than worry about the symptoms that they are feeling.” We're in great company with Vickum Nawagamuwage, Founder of Santani Wellness in the serene Kandy setting of his native Sri Lanka. Here, he's created the first and only award winning luxury wellness resort to focus on ‘human sustainability' - where he believes that protecting the world means protecting you as a human being, and of course his guest first - providing wellbeing through every sense of the experience for body, mind and soul.  Having traveled the world as a consultant, exploring his own career induced chronic stress healing journey, he found a global demand and newfound mission to address the modern mental health pandemic - starting with the ancient practices, sense of place, and welcoming hospitality of Sri Lanka.  In this episode, Vickum graciously shares his own personal story, the research and evolutionary realization that he has pursued, how his guests can learn about and discover this path to wellness for themselves, and where he hopes to take this practice next.  Top Takeaways [1:45] Born and raised in Sri Lanka, Vickum left to pursue a career of chasing higher education and climbing the corporate ladder in the US, where like so many others, he experienced for the first time the incredible stresses exerted on the mind and body from the struggle of modern day living.  [6:15] And yet stress itself is not the enemy, it is what drives us. Vickum shares how his recent revelation about the evolution of human nature led him to realize the disparity with how we manage it today.  [11:00] It used to be about survival of the fittest and thus it was most important to feed our bodies. Now, without that physical stress to survive, it is about how we train our minds to evolve, and yet we neglect to feed our minds with the necessary information and relaxation it needs. [21:30] What a shift from a curative health care system to a preventative one could look like, how Santani Wellness is leading this holistic approach to making fit not only our bodies, but our minds and spirits too, and why Sri Lanka is the perfect place to start. [29:05] A day in the life of a guest at Santani Wellness is completely customized to the individual - from the morning energizing yoga, to the meals, excursions, activities and treatments, from the evening calming yoga, to every experience and conversation in between.  [32:10] How Vickum originally found this 116 acre tea plantation and pristine forest that had the “natural energy” he was looking for to evoke those feelings in guests, and how the resort's “architecture of silence” allows nature to speak for itself to guests.   [38:40] Expect to indulge in gourmet wellness cuisine following the Ayurveda philosophy of ‘Rasa Haya' which translates to ‘six tastes', where the emphasis is on taste based nutrition balancing sweet, sour, salty, pungent (spicy), bitter and astringent (drying).   [56:15] Beyond building two other locations - Kirana, a Santani Villa  in Bentota and Sama, a Santani Retreat in Kosgoda - Vickum explains where he is taking the concept of Santani Wellness next.  Notable Mentions Knuckles Conservation Forest UNESCO Site Aro Ha Wellness Retreat, New Zealand Visit For Yourself Santani Wellness Website @santani_wellness Stay In Good Company Website

We're talking to Yemi Penn. She's an engineer, author, documentary producer, speaker, and is currently pursuing her PhD around how trauma can be transformative. She's a survivor herself who's self awareness and growth is ongoing. She's in the midst of transformation and change. So, it was the perfect time to dig really deep into topics like why life doesn't have to be a struggle, what trauma is, how the aftermath of traumatic events can lead to struggle, and the huge question of what is the point of trauma?Yemi then boldly and openly tells us about her own traumatic experience with specific examples of how it's rippled out into her life. A loss of power and consent led to a minimization of her voice. We explore how this became intertwined with personality, how she uses her voice now, the power of acknowledgement and awareness, some of the healing modalities Yemi has used in her own healing journey, and we even breach the topic of restorative justice and how punishment just isn't working to stop perpetrators. This episode may be hard to listen to for some of you, but I hope it inspires you to face any discomfort you may feel when you're ready in order to embrace the sometimes messy inner work required to heal your own trauma. We end the episode by considering the question, what would life look like without trauma. Yemi says she searched the depths of her soul to answer this question and the others throughout this vulnerable and informative interview. I invite you now to imagine for yourself a life and a world without trauma. If we can do that, we can get there.TRIGGER WARNING: We discuss child sexual abuse. We don't have to be what we've always been. We can change. We can move forward. We can create a life, and by extension, a society, that works better for us. And that, my friend, is what it's all about. We can't change the past, but we can change the here, now, and future. When you're ready, I'm here as a trauma-informed coach to hold space for you as you build awareness and heal trauma. Post-traumatic growth is possible.
