In my previous show about work life balance I lightly discussed becoming an unattached human. And in my podcast on spirituality I discussed ‘letting go'. Many have asked me for more on this topic, so here we go. I believe we can only become happy when we detach ourselves from things we need to be happy, this is where we get our POWER back. In life we attach our happiness to things, to certain outcomes, to certain people, to our perception of how life should go, and it's this that is making us unhappy. If you want to be a free, powerful, happy human, this is the recipe. 00:00 Introduction to Happiness 00:18 The Pursuit of Genuine Happiness 01:42 Detaching from External Influences 02:20 Managing Emotions Effectively 05:43 Breaking Free from Dependencies 09:13 The Power of Self-Belief 16:56 Creating an Energetic Imprint 19:49 Conclusion and Call to Action

Dive into Episode #116 of the Psych Health and Safety USA Podcast, featuring host Dr. I. David Daniels, PhD, CSD, VPS, and special guest Mark Tuggle, an author and advocate for mental health in black men. Black men in the United States can face many challenges when seeking mental health help due to several factors, including: - The Black community has historically viewed mental illness as a sign of weakness or lack of faith. This stigma can make Black men feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek help and can lead to them not being open to discussing or acknowledging their mental health. - One study found that 63% of Black people believe that a mental health condition is a sign of personal weakness. The stigma can also be rooted in slavery when it was commonly thought that enslaved people were not sophisticated enough to develop mental health disorders. - Black men may also face barriers to mental health services due to poverty, racism, and implicit bias from medical providers. They are less likely than white people to receive guideline-consistent care or to be included in mental health research. As a result, Black men are more likely to use emergency rooms or primary care for mental health problems. Mark began in therapy in the mid-90s after being diagnosed with an illness that he feared would take his life. After years in therapy, he began to realize that his experience was not unique, and he believed that he could not only recover himself but he could use his experience to advocate for other black men in discussions about mental health.

Why are men so depressed, frustrated and angry? So many men struggle with feeling disconnected, low, maybe even depressed, and far removed from their sense of purpose, often facing overwhelm, sadness and isolation. Life can then feel flat, and modern societal pressures only add to this burden. You or your partner might feel stuck and unsure of where to start, and the term ‘crisis of masculinity' just seems to ring a bell that strikes a chord in us, but one where no music seems to play. This show, and this 3 part series, is a journey of understanding male mental health. Men, like everyone else, need to grow, evolve, and connect with their true selves. Society often expects men to suppress emotions and prioritise logic over feelings, leading to profound unhappiness and mental health struggles. This is where I will argue that there is NO crisis of masculinity. In this episode, we look to uncover the reasons behind the high rates of depression among men. Could it be a crisis in masculinity, societal changes or physiological factors like declining testosterone levels, increased obesity, and sedentary lifestyles? Or is there much more to this conversation than meets the eye. This episode isn't just about understanding the problem; it's about finding solutions. By the end of this episode you'll understand the factors contributing to healthy male mental health, which of course links to our physical health, and have practical strategies to combat it. Men, it's time to challenge what you know and take steps towards a healthier, happier life. This week Hannah is joined by Men's work coach and founder of the online men's community, One Brotherhood, James Oliver. Hannah and James dive into a beautiful discussion around the intricacies of male mental health, and James explains how he got into this work, after his own battle with his mental health. James describes his work as “helping men rediscover who they were before the world got its hands on them” - by going beneath the surface level, and guiding men through what he calls ‘the DEEP work', he helps them tackle the root cause of issues such as shame, low-self-worth, self-sabotage and perfectionism, in order to achieve radical growth, healing and transformation in all areas of their lives. James believes that our external world is a direct reflection of our internal world, starting with our relationship with ourselves; this is one of the foundational principles that informs his work, and allows him to help men all over the world find inner-freedom and become self-led leaders in life, love and business. This episode ties into the theme of ‘Movember', and one that Hannah feels very passionately about - she thinks it is so important for men to feel safe to be themselves, to feel and to heal. Sending love to anyone going through a tough time, or battling with their mental health. See the links below for any help or guidance from James, and other communities. My guest today is Andrew Kauffman.Andrew is a returning guest to the podcast and I'm so happy to be continuing the conversation with him. Our first conversation is on episode 117, and I highly recommend listening if you haven't yet, as Andrew shared pieces of his journey including his experience coming out as gay as well as being a kidney donor to his father.Andrew is a coach, a writer and a teacher of creative writing. He believes that writing be a transformational aid for healing, in coaching, and in all contexts.Trained and accredited by The Professional Writing Academy in the use of expressive and therapeutic writing, he uses stories, metaphor and narrative tools to help his coaching clients cope with life transitions, and to derive meaning from challenging life events. In our conversation today, we talk about mental health and mental ill-health. Andrew cares deeply about mental health and wellbeing and his work reflects this compasion. One of the more specific areas we explore today is around male mental health. I admittedly am distanced from this topic and it was interesting to explore with Andrew. I came away from the conversation with a greater desire to be aware of the challenges of various groups of people, how they are both different and similar to my own journey. Holding the paradox of our differences and similarities is not necessarily easy. And there's no easy answers to the challenges of mental health and wellbeing. I believe conversations like this one are useful, however, despite not having a well-defined outcome or a pretty metaphorical bow to finish it off. Andrew, thank you again, for stepping into the conversation with authenticity and passion. Thanks you for sharing vulnerably from your own journey, the places you've found answers, and also the places you are still seeking understanding. Both in conversation and in writing you are inspiring as you model the challenging work that you also facilitate and invite others into as well for the sake of healing and making the world a better place. Please check out the links to Andrews work, his workshops, and to connect directly with him: Andrew is Writer-in-Residence at the UK's Centre for Mental Health. The feeling you'll leave today's episode with will be inspired, during the course of this process Isaac tore down the previous version of himself to rebuild and create the person he wanted to be which is where he stands today. In this episode you can expect to learn: Why even if you're training consistently for 7 years, you might not see the results you're after. Why breaking out of your comfort zone is truly one of the most powerful things you can ever do. Along with why reaching inside of yourself is the best place to start if you're ready to transform. “Don't Take Anything Personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.”-Don Miguel Ruiz
“The body needs to keep score of these traumatic events to protect itself. But unfortunately, this can cause anxiety. This can cause depression. This can cause substance abuse,” explains Dr. Jody Joshua Adewale. Dr. Jody is a clinical psychologist with his own practice and also a professor at East Los Angeles College. Today, Dr. Jody joins host Calvin to talk about Black male mental health, depression, and toxic masculinity. Later, they are joined by Charles Couch and Corbin Coleman who are the creators of the documentary, I'm Good Bro: Unmasking Black Male Depression. Historically organizations have used medical experimentation abuse in the Black community. This has caused an understandable distrust of authority figures and a tendency to shy away from seeking resources for mental health. Thankfully, things have begun to shift positively as more Black celebrities come forward about their own mental health struggles. Black men have started to be more in tune with their feelings and are beginning to seek support, however, there is still a stigma against vulnerability that needs to be addressed. It can be really helpful to come at mental health from a liberation framework because that takes into account the marginalization, structural discrimination, and other environmental factors that are ultimately the cause of the mental health issues. It is important for Black men to be allowed to be vulnerable without judgment. They need to know it is safe to seek resources and to ask for help. Many of the mental health struggles that are faced by the Black community are caused by external factors, and that is a piece that unfortunately medicine tends to overlook. By learning how to be more in tune with their feelings and understanding that vulnerability can actually be a strength, Black men can heal from trauma and move on from toxic masculinity. Quotes • “I think there's becoming a wave or a shift in thinking where black men and black women are starting to see mental health as a resource as opposed to something to run away from.” (16:09-16:19 | Dr. Jody) • “Individuals and organizations have used mental health as a way of exerting power and authority over the black community.” (16:47-16:54 | Dr. Jody) • “With these celebrities coming out and speaking about their mental health challenges, it's giving some people permission to do the same.” (18:18-18:24 | Dr. Jody) • “Mental health and medicine really fail to consider the social part of it, the environmental factors that are pulling this out.” (20:52-20:59 | Dr. Jody) • “The body needs to keep score of these traumatic events to protect itself. But unfortunately, this can cause anxiety. This can cause depression. This can cause substance abuse.” (24:07-24:17 | Dr. Jody) • “As soon as you say mental health, or mental illness, especially in the Black community, you're labeled crazy. When everybody has mental health, just like everybody has digestive health, or respiratory health, your mind is a part of your being.” (52:17-52:38 | Charles) • “Vulnerability has been stigmatized as a weakness in the black community when actually being vulnerable is a strength, because basically you're exposing yourself. And a lot of times, black men don't have that privilege just to be human and say, look, things are not good.” (59:26-59:47 | Charles) Links Connect with Dr. Jody Joshua Adewale, PsyD, MA: Twitter: https://twitter.com/dr_jodyadewale?lang=en Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oluyumi/ Books Absent Fathers: Understanding Perceptions Adult Males have of their Absent Fathers: https://www.amazon.com/Absent-Fathers-Understanding-Perceptions-Adult/dp/1499246277/ Children's Book: Who Can Curly Trust : https://www.amazon.com/Who-Curly-Trust-Jody-Adewale/dp/1507510462 Connect with Charles Crouch and Corbin Coleman of 4C Visuals Group: Website: https://linktr.ee/4CVisualsGroup Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/4cvisualsgroup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/4cvisualsgroup/ Documentary: "I'm Good Bro" Part 1 - Unmasking Black Male Depression: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_iCaM84HUg&t=32s Part 2 - The Year 2020 & Mental Health: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYfa7D3415k&t=6s About with Southern Soul Live Stream - Podshow Witty, thought-provoking, and uplifting, Southern Soul Livestream - Podshow is the program that you'll invite friends over to watch every week, where you'll learn about fascinating speakers and get to share in exciting experiences. There is a mental health crisis in America right now. Suicide deaths have ticked up in Ohio, with the increase greater in males, with Black Ohioans faring worse, with a 56 percent increase in suicide deaths over the last 14 years among those 25-64 years old. Today we are going to discuss Black males and depression -- suffering in silence. Joining the discussion are William Hasan, a mental health therapist with The Black Mental Health Corporation; and Donald; and Donald, a man who has experienced depression.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"John Cacioppo, Ph.D., and colleagues at the University of Chicago actually measured the electrical output of the cerebral cortex to demonstrate that, across a variety of situations, negative information leads to a swift and outsize surge in activity. One hurt lingers longer than one compliment. Nevertheless, the ability to rapidly detect bad news and weight it so heavily, Cacioppo says, evolved for a very positive reason—to keep us out of harm's way.”https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/201311/the-power-no

On today's episode I'm sitting down with Ghalib Hassam. Ghalib approached me as he wished to talk about how the passing of his father made him realise a lot about male mental health and toxic masculinity. Being from Pakistan, Ghalib argues that due to the culture there was not a lot of room for tears, expressing one's feelings, for sorrow and to deal properly with the passing of his father. I had to be "strong" and this pushed me away so much that I left the country for 4 years." Thus, he fled to Istanbul in the hope of finding happiness and a life where the ghosts from the past would not follow him."My mental health itself declined massively after his death since the only way to support my family was to be "strong" for them. Because that's what I was taught by my culture. " Ghalib was diagnosed with depression. Today, his idea about happiness is very different from what it used to be. He is back in Pakistan, from where he is currently telling us his story. This episode is for you whom are passionate about breaking down taboos, especially in the area of males mental health and whom is in the need of a good advice when looking for happiness and contentment in your life. Alan watts, a writer and 20th century philosopher once wrote:“Why don't you really know what you want? There are two reasons that you don't really know what you want. Number one: you already have it. Number two: you don't know yourself, because you never can. The Godhead is never an object of its own knowledge, just as a knife doesn't cut itself, fire doesn't burn itself, light doesn't illuminate itself.”To summarize… it's not your job to understand, know, and control everything. The sooner you accept and surrender to this… you are truly free.

Matt Rudd is my guest on today's Wisdom Wednesday and I'm so thrilled to have him. After reading his book, Man Down, I've been left pondering lots ever since. The book combines research with Matt's own personal exploration about why mental health in men is so troubled and what are possible solutions. Matt is a Senior Writer on The Sunday Times, he's an award-winning columnist and currently writes the column Man Trouble in The Sunday Times Magazine. He's written three novels and two non-fiction books including Man Down which explores male mental health. The reason why this topic is so important to me is because I grew up understanding that men struggle with mental health just as much as women as my father went through many periods of chronic anxiety, depression and even now it can be a daily challenge to manage. Matt is on a mission to create emotional equality and I couldn't be more supportive. He's passionate about creating a culture that allows all humans to process their emotions, regardless of what they look like or identify as.Find Matt: Twitter: @MattRuddBook: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Man-Down-Unhappy-What-About/dp/0349424810/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTColumn: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/profile/matt-rudd?page=1 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Henry Zhu studied psychology at Harvard and is now Chief of Staff at The JED Foundation, which aims to protect the emotional health of, and prevent suicide for, teens and young adults. While the foundation advises schools on mental health policies and runs PSAs with celebrities like Billie Eilish and leagues like the NBA, Henry is especially interested in male mental health and modern masculinity overall. Basically, how the culture pushes boys and men to think and behave in a certain way that is getting in the way of guys being their healthiest selves. As you might be able to guess, that's where what we focus our conversation on today. Relationships. Vulnerability. Self worth. All the things that make us whole. And don't let Henry's soft spoken nature fool you - he is incredibly passionate, knowledgable, and ambitious about improving mental health for young people and males in particular. PARENTS AS RARE - EPISODE 043 Cowden Syndrome & Male Mental Health - David Ross David Ross is a rare disease leader in men’s mental health. He plans and hosts valuable international support calls focused on men's mental health in the rare disease community. David is also a dad with a rare disease called Cowden Syndrome. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How did finding out about your disease shape your relationship with your daughter? I felt I wasn't supportive enough to my mother when she was facing Cowden Syndrome. When I was diagnosed with the same condition after she passed, while I couldn't go back and change how I supported my mother, I could support others. Looking back, I focused a lot on advocacy and my mother’s legacy. I've shifted my focus in the last year to my daughter and myself. My daughter needs more support and we need more time for us, and our relationship has become better because I've recognized and acted on that. When did men's mental health become a focus of your advocacy? Someone brought to my attention that a lot of men in the rare disease community didn't seek support or speak out about what they were going through. As I searched for my voice in the rare disease community, I decided to set up international group meetings for men who need a platform to share what they're going through and get mental health support. What was your experience opening up about your feelings, thoughts and struggles for the first time? After my mother passed away and in wanting to make a difference for myself and others, I felt strongly that I needed to speak out about what I was going through and how I was impacted. It has taken time to learn how to speak up, what to say and what not to say. While it was scary, connecting with others in the community continues to help me and inspires me to get my story out. What is your advice for other parents with a rare disease? Feel the feelings. There are so many feelings and emotions that come with chronic illness and rare disease, and you need to give yourself permission to feel all of them when they arise. Sometimes writing down what you're going through can help to express your feelings.
