Crises going nuclear

Security expert John Blaxland and physicist Ken Baldwin join us to discuss Dutton's nuclear plans, politicised debates and poly-crisis. Is it possible to decarbonise through nuclear energy? Does the debate around these complex issues indicate a failure in public discourse? And what does this say about our ability to govern and manage a ‘poly-crisis'? On this episode of Democracy Sausage, John Blaxland and Ken Baldwin join Mark Kenny to discuss crises everywhere, all at once — from energy transition to governance and security. John Blaxland is Professor of International Security and Intelligence Studies in the ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, and the Director of the ANU North American Liaison Office. His recent report for the RSL Defence and National Security Committee is Adapting to Poly-Crisis: A Proposed Australian National Security Strategy. Ken Baldwin is a physicist in the Research School of Physics, the founding Director of the ANU Grand Challenge: Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia-Pacific (2018-2021), and the inaugural Director of the ANU Energy Change Institute (2010-2020, now incorporated into ICEDS). Mark Kenny is the Director of the ANU Australian Studies Institute. He came to the University after a high-profile journalistic career including six years as chief political correspondent and national affairs editor for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times. One of the most memorable stories I have read in The New Yorker was published in 2003. It was called "Jumpers." The author, Tad Friend, interviewed people who had survived plunges off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Ken Baldwin was 28 and depressed. He said: "I still see my hands coming off the railing. I instantly realized that everything in my life that I'd thought was unfixable was totally fixable - except for having just jumped." Kevin Hines was 19. His first thought was, "What the hell did I just do? I don't want to die." He later told The New York Times: "I know that almost everyone else who's gone off that bridge, they had that exact same thought at that moment. All of a sudden, they didn't want to die, but it was too late. Somehow I made it; they didn't; and now I feel it's my responsibility to speak for them." I wondered if anyone had survived a fall from the Bear Mountain Bridge and found two: a 20-year-old West Point cadet in 2005 and a 16-year-old girl from Mohegan Lake in 2014. I also found two who survived the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge: a 20-year-old man in 1998 and another man in 2022 who was rescued by a police officer on a jet ski. I wanted to ask them if they had thoughts similar to Hines' but only the cadet was identified. He did not reply to an email, which is understandable. The fact is, scientists have researched whether bridge barriers save lives, and the conclusion is that they can be effective. An argument leveled against them, besides the cost, is that people intent on killing themselves will find another way. But mental health professionals believe that bridges and firearms (which 25,000 people use to kill themselves annually) empower impulsive decisions, and that if the person encounters an obstacle, the cloud often passes. One study in the 1970s tracked people who had been prevented from jumping from the Golden Gate; it found that just 10 percent went on to kill themselves. Pleas Grow for Bridge Fencing In other words, "90 percent got past it," Richard Seiden, who conducted the study, told The New York Times. "They were having an acute temporary crisis, they passed through it and, coming out the other side, they got on with their lives. "At the risk of stating the obvious," he added, "people who attempt suicide aren't thinking clearly. They might have a Plan A, but there's no Plan B. They get fixated. They don't say, 'Well, I can't jump, so now I'm going to go shoot myself.' And that fixation extends to whatever method they've chosen. They decide they're going to jump off a particular spot on a particular bridge, or maybe they decide that when they get there, but if they discover the bridge is closed for renovations or the railing is higher than they thought, most of them don't look around for another place to do it. They just retreat." Another researcher, Dr. David Rosen, interviewed 10 people who had survived bridge jumps. "What was immediately apparent," he told The Times, "was that none of them had truly wanted to die. They had wanted their inner pain to stop. They wanted some measure of relief, and this was the only answer they could find. They were in spiritual agony, and they sought a physical solution." Like anyone who suffers from depression, I know how despair can fuel thoughts of a quick escape. For that reason, like many people in my boat, I will never own a firearm. As for a bridge, Kevin Hines jumped and returned with a message: He made a huge mistake. But he got a second chance. In distress? In an intimate and revealing conversation, we ask Ken Baldwin, one of the few survivors of an attempt from the Golden Gate Bridge, to tell us what was going through his mind when he headed there to end his life. It's a conversation we'd only have with someone who has had a lot of time to process his attempt and who is in a much healthier and stable place, which Ken is. He freely tells his story in an effort to let us know that even the things in our lives that feel irreparable and hopeless may look very different when viewed through healthier lenses.

Over the past decades, Australia has lacked stability in its climate policy even as climate change becomes impossible for the world to ignore. With Australian voters heading to the polls this Saturday, does the country have the policy promises it needs to spark an energy change? On this episode of Policy Forum Pod, Ken Baldwin, Kylie Catchpole, and Mark Kenny look at how Australia can transition to renewables even without a strong policy framework to lead the way. Ken Baldwin is Director of the Energy Change Institute at ANU, and Deputy Director of the Research School of Physics and Engineering. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Project Steering Committee for the Australian Energy Technology, and since 2014, he has been a Board member of the South East Region of Renewable Energy Excellence. Kylie Catchpole is at the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University. Her research interests are in nanotechnology and new materials for solar cell applications. She has a physics degree from the ANU, winning a University Medal, and a PhD from the ANU. Mark Kenny is a Senior Fellow in the ANU Australian Studies Institute. He came to the university after a high-profile journalistic career including six years as chief political correspondent and national affairs editor for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Canberra Times. He is also the presenter of Policy Forum's Democracy Sausage podcast. Our presenters – Quentin Grafton and Martyn Pearce – also discuss the upcoming election, and the difficulties in understanding multiple policies when trying to cast an informed vote. Yes, it is I – Marc Hershon – your host and 100% recyclable container for Epi 127 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. We’re back to the clippage this time, with a fully loaded Succotash Clips show. We’ve got a full rack of comedy podcast clips ready to roll, from the Bertcast, BrianTALKS, Buffet Kings, Now That I’m Older, Push The Button, Rick & Paul Heal The World, Screams & Moans, Sup Doc, Wicked Theory, and You Made It Weird. We’ve also got a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with our resident political comic, correspeondent, and commentator Will Durst, plus a classic spot from our sponsor, Henderson's Pants. THE CLIPS BertcastOur Associate Producer Tyson Saner clipped us off a chunk of the Bertcast, hosted by comedian Bert Kreischer. Bert’s a funny guy and I love his appearances on Doug Loves Movies, especially when that insane laugh of his get going, all girlish and giggly. He tours the comedy clubs a lot but he also cranks out the episodes. This is from back in December, Epi150, when he had comedian Jimmy Tingle on the ‘cast. Now That I’m OlderAnother clip from Tyson’s harvest comes to us from the Now That I’m Older podcast, hosted by Ken Baldwin and Shane Smith. The general premise for the show is that getting older sucks but can also be awesome at the same time. The two host like to poke fun – at the world at large as well as each other. And they occasionally review movies. The clippage is from Epi47 from December, and features Shane going off on the worst part of his telemarketing job. Sup DocI think I mentioned the title of this next podcast we’re featuring when it first came out, for two reasons. The first is that one of the co-hosts, Paco Romane, is a comedian and actor in San Francisco whom I happen to know. The second reason is the close connection our shows’ titles have – ours, of course, is Succotash, as in “Sufferin’ succotash”, the catchphrase of Warner Brothers’ cartoon cat, Sylvester. Paco and his compadre in podcasting, George Chen, run Sup Doc, which may sound a lot like Bugs Bunny’s “What’s up, doc?” tagline. Like our show, theirs has nothing to do with those characters. Sup Doc is a podcast that looks at film documentaries. I’ve been hanging onto this clip for a few months because I wanted to see the film they were talking about first, which is Going Clear, the somewhat chilling doc about Scientology. Their guest in this show, Epi16, is Jamie DeWolf, who is also the great-grandson of none other than Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard. You Made It WeirdNext episode we’ll feature our live recording made at The Improv in Los Angeles, featuring Dana Carvey among other guests. Tyson clipped an episode of Pete Holmes’ You Made It Weird from the end of December 2014 that featured Mr. Carvey in a long episode. In this snippet, Dana thinks on Lorne Michaels and also Paul McCartney in the year before SNL’s 40th anniversary. BryanTALKSI first learned of the BryanTALKS podcast from a note that host Bryan Cain-Jackson dropped into the Tweetsack. (By note I mean “tweet” and by “Tweetsack” I mean “Tweetsack”.) He wanted to know if I’d had a chance to check out his brand new podcast, which I hadn’t. But I did after that and I liked what I heard! Part sketch, part news, part reaction to the news, and interviews makes for a well-rounded show with a decent sound. Bryan seems to be connected – this clip comes from his recent episode, where he was hanging on the set with the entire cast of NBC’s show Undateable. Rick & Paul Heal The World, A Comedy PodcastThanks to our man Tyson, we have a clip from a podcast called Rick & Paul Heal The World. Sounds like a tall order. I can’t find the last names of these guys anywhere, which certainly limited their liability if they DON’T end up healing the world. Just to get you back in the holiday mood, this clip is from just before last Christmas where Rick & Paul explore the pain and misery of holiday shopping. Screams & Moans I wanted to play a clip from a podcast by a longtime supporter and friend-of-Succotash, Megan Moen. I only knew her by her Twitter handle for a long time, @podcastwhore, but it’s already been two years since she kicked off her Screams & Moans podcast. So congrats, Megan! Her guest in her 36th episode is Wayne Baglin, whose own podcast, The Crunch Time Show, is — I think — in the Podcast Graveyard, but who was also an inspiration to her getting started. Buffet KingsWe got a note to check out a show from Adelaide, Australia, called The Buffet Kings. So of course we did. Byt their pictures on the SoundCloud page for this show, the three hosts — Matt O’Brien, Matt Rix, and Luke Verharen — are are “gentlemen of proportion” (to use a phrase a tailor once used on me when fitting me for a tuxedo.) This clip is from their second episode, where they obviously feel they are in a position to chat about how funny can directly translate to body mass…or not. Push The ButtonAssociate producer Tyson Saner clipped off a bit of the Push The Button podcast, hosted by David Vox Mullen and Mr. Anderson. They chat it up about a bunch of different things and, in this clip, they’re talking about the bru-ha-ha that kicked up this past holiday season over Starbucks changing the design of their holiday cups. Wicked TheoryOne of our awesome Twitter supporters is Bill Sweeney, one of the hosts and the producer of the Wicked Theory podcast. So I thought it was high time we played a clip from a recent episode. He’s joined by his buddy Dom, his brother Bob and NOT by his buddy Ed, who called in sick. The Wicked Theory guys cover a lot of shows and movies and comics and stuff in every episode, so they’re packed with nerdy goodness. Or goody nerdness. That’s going to put the bow on this edition of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. If you have any desire to help a brother out, there are 99 things wrong with our website but our Donate button isn’t one of them. Works just fine. As does our Amazon banner at the top of the page. Click that sucker, buy something on Amazon, the world’s largest anything store, and we get a tasty kickback. Or buy yourself a Succo-t-shirt, mug or other gewgaw at the Succotashery, easily accessible at the aforementioned http://SuccotashShow.com. — Marc Hershon P.S. I want to leave you with a reminder that our very next episode is not just a Succotash Chats installment, but it was recorded live at the Improv in Los Angeles. Our guests were Dana Carvey, his sons Dex and Tom, and Wayne Federman. Our announcer Bill Heywatt even made the trek to LA along with me to be at The Comedy Lab in West Hollywood.
