Gone are the days of the Old West with sheriffs sitting astride their horses and star shaped badges gleaming in the dusty sunshine. But the idea of police on horseback isn't a total relic. San Francisco, with the country's second oldest mounted police force, still has a few hooved officers left. This week on the show, producer Katrina Schwartz heads to the stables to meet this four-legged squad. Additional Reading: After 150 Years, Why Do San Francisco Police Still Have a Mounted Unit? In the middle of his successful career in the biotech industry, Kevin Stark unexpectedly became a quadriplegic. A few years later, he met his lovely wife, Jamie, and they fell in love. On this special Valentine’s Day episode of the Joni and Friends Ministry Podcast, Kevin and Jamie Stark give honest insight about marriage and the role that disability plays in their relationship. They share what it really means for any couple to say “for better, for worse…in sickness and in health…till death do us part.” Joni and Friends was founded in 1979 by Joni Eareckson Tada who in a diving accident was left a quadriplegic at 17 years old. Ministry began as Tada, joined by friends around her kitchen table, responded to letters she received from people with disabilities in search of support. Over the past 40 years, the ministry has grown to serve thousands of people impacted by disability worldwide: Joni and Friends has delivered 150,000 wheelchairs and Bibles through Wheels for the World and provided Christian care to 63,000 special needs family members through Family Retreats. The organization also equips individuals and churches with disability ministry training and provides higher education courses through the Christian Institute on Disability. www.joniandfriends.org

What caused the end of the Ice Age? It’s a 20,000-year old mystery that’s being tackled by climate scientists across the county. Answering this question is not just about understanding the past -- it’s about developing a unified theory of the atmospheric system. And it can help refine climate models that project current and future rates of warming. Aaron Putnam and his research team from the University of Maine are searching for clues as to what caused this rapid melting of glaciers and ice sheets. To find answers, Putnam's team traveled to a remote ice field in the Mongolian Altai, a vast range of mountains that touch Russia, Mongolia, China and Kazakstan. This story is brought to us by Kevin Stark. He’s an environmental journalist who lives in Chicago. He embedded with Putnam’s team for the entire 6-week journey, a part his work as a Comer journalism fellow at Northwestern University.
