In this powerful conversation, investigative journalist Shoshana Walter exposes the dark underbelly of America's rehab industry. Drawing from her eight years of research for Rehab: An American Scandal, she reveals how court-ordered rehab programs have exploited vulnerable people by sending them to work unpaid in dangerous jobs — all under the guise of “treatment.” We discuss: The shocking origins of these labor-based rehabs and how they became so widespread Why our mainstream treatment system often fails people — and in some cases, increases overdose risk Real-life stories of individuals like Chris, April, and Wendy that illustrate both the broken system and the resilience of those fighting for change How loopholes and lack of oversight allow unethical rehabs to thrive Practical ways families can identify quality treatment programs and avoid predatory ones Despite the heavy subject, this episode ends with hope: a growing community of advocates and storytellers pushing for systemic change. Before we jump in, I just wanted to give you a little update on what I've been up to, and share a new meeting I'll be hosting. After creating and teaching a course called “Inner Compass”, I was feeling super burned out, so I decided to take some time off. I called it my "Self-Care Summer". I didn't do any new interviews, take on any new clients, or do any social media. It was a time to reset, heal and think about the direction of my work. My guiding thoughts were centered around one question: "What does God want for my life?" I was practicing total surrender, and I gotta tell you, it was a leap of faith, but then something interesting happened. Two podcasters published interviews I gave, and I realized something. I truly love sharing what I've learned in recovery. It really fills my heart with joy. That's why I've been doing the Sobriety Reset series for those who are coming back from another “Day 1”. Also I was invited to partner with OpenRecovery, a free app centered around recovery, to start a new community there. This means I'll be hosting free meetings that will make 12 principals accessible to my fellow skeptics, by providing a path around common obstacles. I'll leave links in the show notes so you can download the app, and there will be announcements for the launch date. I've been wanting to host a meeting since I published the book, and OpenRecovery is providing me with the platform! I'm really excited about it and I hope you'll join me. One last thing, if you enjoy this episode, it would mean the world to me if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. It might surprise you to know that according to the analytics, less than 1% of our audience will actually leave a review. By leaving a review, it helps others who are suffering to find the podcast and get the life saving resources they need to get and stay sober. You can even think of leaving a review as an act of service! So thank you so much for your support! So without further delay, please enjoy this episode, and let me know what you think!
On this Healthy Mind, Healthy Life episode, host Avik dives straight into the difference between a motivating “why” and an enduring purpose with guest Meghan Walsh—holistic coach and author of Rare Birds: Break Free from the Flock, Find Your Purpose. We unpack practical intuition (heart-centered check-ins), dealing with self-doubt and limiting beliefs, and how to turn so-called “weaknesses” into leadership strengths. Clear, applicable steps for anyone feeling successful on paper but unfulfilled in life and work. About the guest : Meghan Walsh spent 18 years in corporate leadership before choosing a values-aligned path as a holistic coach, speaker, and author. Through positive psychology and energy work, she helps high achievers reconnect to intuition, release self-doubt, and live their unique purpose. Her book, Rare Birds, releases Tuesday, September 23. Key takeaways: “Why” fuels action; “purpose” is the GPS. Your why can change with life seasons, while purpose provides longer-term direction. Intuition is quieter than the thinking mind. A quick heart-connection practice (breathe, place two fingers on the heart, ask, wait) helps you hear it. Self-doubt often masks self-worth issues. Notice procrastination and triggers; ask, “What's coming up for me right now?” to surface the story underneath. Rewrite old scripts through action. Small next steps compound, build evidence, and replace limiting agreements with empowering ones. Emotions are data, not defects. Meghan's “silver lining model” (Acknowledge–Connect–Empower) reframes perceived weaknesses into leadership strengths. Success “on paper” without fulfillment is a signal, not a sentence. There is always another path if you're willing to take the first step. Start today: do the 2-minute heart check-in, name one limiting belief, choose one simple action that aligns with your purpose. Book note: Rare Birds offers tools to identify your purpose, recalibrate self-talk, and set aligned boundaries. . What happens when the mental health system you've relied on leaves you depleted instead of healed? Our guest, Cooper Davis, shares his decades-long journey from being diagnosed with ADD as a child and cycling through stimulants, benzodiazepines, and antidepressants to reaching a breaking point in his late twenties. A 12-step rehab program—meant for substance addiction, not psychiatric drug withdrawal—introduced him to community, mentorship, and coping skills outside the medical model. Today, through the Inner Compass Initiative, which he runs with his wife Laura Delano, Cooper champions a mutual-aid approach that helps people make informed choices about psychiatric drugs and tapering. This candid conversation offers a rare insider's look at how one man transformed a personal crisis into a mission for mental health reform.Love the show? What does it really mean to trust yourself? Is fear just a byproduct of not knowing who you are—or who you could be?In this mind-bending interview, Paul sits down with Lawrence Yeo—creator of the illustrated blog More To That and author of The Inner Compass—to explore the tension between certainty and curiosity, mastery and status, and how to rewrite the internal scripts running your life.
In this episode of Healthy Waves, host Avik explores the power of reclaiming our inner compass and taking radical responsibility for emotional, mental, and physical health. Guests Dr. Marissa Heisel, a holistic healing expert, and Zoey Kyriacou, a licensed therapist and anxiety specialist, share grounded insights on self-healing, boundary setting, and redefining self-care. Together, they reveal how tuning into our body's wisdom, questioning external authority, and practicing practical mental health tools can create clarity, peace, and empowerment. This conversation bridges science and soul, helping you step into alignment and reconnect with your true self. About the Guests Dr. Marissa Heisel is a holistic healing pioneer with 25+ years of experience blending chiropractic care, midwifery, and energy medicine. She helps women reclaim authority over their health and live in alignment with their inner compass. Zoey Kyriacou is a licensed professional counselor, certified anxiety specialist, and founder of Mastermind Counseling. She supports high-functioning adults navigating anxiety, burnout, ADHD, and boundaries with a mix of heart and practical tools. Key Takeaways Radical responsibility begins with reclaiming inner authority instead of outsourcing all decisions to external systems. Modern health culture often conditions people into compliance; healing starts with curiosity, embodiment, and listening to the body. High-functioning adults frequently hide anxiety behind success; learning to challenge internal stories and self-talk is essential. Boundaries are difficult for people-pleasers but vital for sustainable mental health; practicing small “no's” helps overcome guilt. Self-care isn't always bubble baths—it can be the unglamorous choices like eating better, resting, or walking outside. True well-being comes from alignment with purpose, presence, and practices that reconnect us to nature and stillness. Lawrence Yeo — writer, illustrator and author of “The Inner Compass” — joins the show to discuss the power of intuition in an uncertain world. We explore why embracing uncertainty leads to greater curiosity, how social conditioning pulls us away from our true north, why doing things for their own sake builds authentic conviction and how journaling the "whys" rather than the "whats" can transform your self-awareness. This conversation flowed so naturally we jumped right in without a formal introduction! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Send us a textHave you ever silenced that inner voice—the one warning you something wasn't quite right? That nagging feeling before making a poor decision, the discomfort in a healing session that didn't align with your energy, or the instant knowing that a diagnosis feels off? Today's exploration dives deep into our most underutilized superpower: intuition. We've been systematically programmed to dismiss our internal guidance system in favor of external authorities. Whether it's the doctor's white coat, the friend's well-meaning advice, or the spiritual teacher's credentials, we've learned to override our gut instincts when they conflict with these outside voices. This disconnection leaves us vulnerable, dependent, and ultimately separated from our authentic selves. Through compelling real-world examples and personal stories, we examine how this pattern plays out repeatedly in our lives, creating consequences we could have avoided by simply trusting ourselves. The journey back to self-trust begins with recognizing the difference between resonance and dissonance—those feelings of alignment or misalignment that speak volumes if we'd only listen. Your body's wisdom communicates through physical sensations, emotional responses, and subtle knowings that deserve your attention rather than dismissal. By reclaiming this internal compass and walking away from the external programming that's kept us small, we step fully into our power and sovereignty. Remember: everything you need is already within you. Your gut instinct isn't just some vague feeling—it's your divine guidance system designed to steer you toward your highest good. Isn't it time you started listening?Support the show

One of the most powerful and misunderstood spiritual tools we have is your inner compass. When we take the time to cultivate a deep, and embodied relationship with this internal guidance system, we can walk through life with clarity, trust, and spiritual alignment, even during chaos. Today, we talk about how to identify what your unique compass feels like, how to recognize when you're off course, and how to realign with your soul's truth. This way you can stop outsourcing your wisdom and start remembering that you are your own guide, and that your map is being created with every step you take. Topics we explore: The difference between universal truth and your unique truth What it means to walk the mythic map How to identify your “yes” in the body Why positive thinking, although necessary, isn't always enough How spiritual devotion keeps you steady in uncertain times The connection between your central channel and inner guidance I'm here with you on this journey. Not just the theory. The truth of how I built my business through it.In this episode, I'm reflecting on the real difference between pushing and flowing, how I've created the most successful year in business yet, and why the instinct that got me here isn't hustle, it's something deeper. We're going beyond the content tips and tactics (even though those are powerful too) and into the heartbeat of how sustainable success actually feels.Grab the Flow Success Instinct PDF and start rewiring your success instinct into something that feels aligned, spacious, and completely yours.Connect with me on Instagram here.
In this summer reflection episode, I'm sharing a small story—just a quiet moment at an airport breakfast counter—that brought me back to the kind of person I want to be. It's a simple action, one that no one asked for or expected. But it reminded me that our small choices matter… especially now. Because let's be honest: it's not always clear what the “right” choice is anymore. Social norms are shifting fast. Families have vastly different beliefs about what should be taught in school. Everyone's following their own path, and as educators, we're constantly navigating conflicting expectations. You can't make everyone happy. And trying to please every person or reflect every worldview just leaves you feeling pulled in a dozen directions. So how do you decide how to show up—when there's no one-size-fits-all answer? For me, it comes back to personal integrity. To who I want to be, even when there's no rulebook. This episode is an invitation to use this summer season to realign with your inner compass and reflect on what kind of world you want to help build—starting with the small, almost invisible choices you make every day. We'll reflect on: Why integrity and empathy are more important than ever in a divided world How to center your actions around who you want to be (not who you're expected to be) Questions to help you define your personal values and vision Ways to leave things better than you found them, even in tiny, almost invisible ways This isn't about perfection. It's about intention. It's about being the kind of person who shows up with clarity, even when no one's watching. And it's about using this summer to reconnect with the kind of world you want to help create. Get the shareable article/transcript for this episode here.

Hey there! In this episode of Human Design Hive, we're diving into the May transits and what they mean for all of us energetically. If you've ever wondered how the monthly solar gates affect your energy and direction, you're in the right place! Human Design reveals how these cosmic energies create themes that influence everyone on the planet, and today we're breaking it all down.## In this episode, you'll discover:- How May kicks off the Quarter of Civilization - bringing your unique ideas into form- Why trusting your inner direction is the theme of early May (and how to stop controlling everything!)- The power of expressing your unique insights when the throat center activates- How to recognize when you're dimming your light to fit in (and what to do about it)- Ways to focus your natural skills and talents as we close out the month## Key Concepts We Explored:We start May in the Quarter of Civilization - where purpose is fulfilled through form, and where our carefully initiated concepts get concretized. This quarter activates all the gates of the throat center!(11:11) Gates 2 & 1: Direction & Self-Expression (May 3-8) These G center gates remind us to follow our inner compass rather than external expectations. When balanced in these energies, you naturally trust your path and allow the right resources to flow toward you. No need to control everything!(29:09) Gates 23 & 43: Assimilation & Insight (May 9-13) These individual circuit gates help you translate complex, novel ideas into language others can understand. It's about giving voice to your unique insights in ways that connect with people - especially when asked!(45:10) Gates 8 & 14: Contribution & Power Skills (May 14-19) This configuration encourages authentic self-expression and using your natural resources to make meaningful contributions. When you're true to yourself, you naturally empower others too.(53:35) Gates 20 & 34: Awareness & Power (May 20-25) The channel of charisma brings raw sacral power into expression through the throat. It's about being fully present in the NOW and following what calls to you in each moment.(01:10:08 ) Gates 16 & 9: Skills & Focus (May 26-31) We close the month with energy supporting enthusiasm for mastery and focused attention. This is perfect timing for honing skills you want to share with the world.(01:20:24)The Left Angle Cross of Incarnation 24/44, 13/7Connect With Us:Don't forget our free monthly community calls on the fourth Wednesday of every month!
