Exercise gives many of us a sense of control, stability, and discipline. Boutique fitness, with its fancy methodologies and curated lights, scents, and sounds, capitalizes on another, more elusive (and highly monetizable) feeling: purpose. For up to $50 per class, we're not only sold a vision of our best body, but also our best self. We're asked to set intentions, repeat affirming mantras, and see squatting and sprinting as a chance to ‘conquer the impossible'. The word 'community' is thrown around like cold towels. In a world that's lonely and often disappointing, it's easy to see why endorphins can quickly become addictive and studios marketing power and positivity become clients' second homes. But for employees of these studios, the culture is a LOT darker. I open up the episode with my own candid confessions about using barre and pilates as an emotional coping mechanism, especially when it comes to men and relationships; choosing body neutrality over body positivity; and my attraction to overpriced boutique fitness as a way to achieve the "clean girl aesthetic"...and therefore the semblance of a more put-together life. Then (13:35), with the casting help of Deuxmoi, we hear from anonymous former employees of Bar Method, DanceBody, Flywheel, Laughing Lotus, Orange Theory, Pure Barre, Taryn Toomey's The Class, an unnamed Los Angeles Lagree studio, and a Western Pennsylvania SoulCycle dupe. They tell stories about psychologically abusive training camps, CEOs with God complexes, intense fat shaming, raging eating disorders, overt racism, and severe underpayment. They walk us through how instructors get clients hooked on certain workouts, and what makes a marketing campaign effective. They reveal some of the WILD codes of conduct (or lack thereof) found in employee and trainer handbooks. And, most importantly, they encourage us to take a long, hard look at why we're often so willing to compromise our morals, on either side of the check-in desk, in pursuit of the “perfect body.” ~ GOT A SECRET TO GET OFF YOUR CHEST? The pop culture topics of the December 1989/January 1990 issue fall into a few clear categories. Want to learn about age-appropriate boys? There are What Now items on Fred Savage and Jared Rushton. Want to get confused by feelings of horniness for unbelievably hot men? There's a shirtless Patrick Swayze and Billy Wirth, the latter apparently One To Watch. Want to be really mean about people who are wealthier and more powerful than you will ever be? There's a swipe at Cher for being old (at 43), and a WHOLE bunch of snark in the results of the entertainment poll -- including the magazine's editors snarking at YOU and your choices! We, however, think you're just great, so listen to what we have to say about all of the above, and more! QUICK LINKS

Hey Tribe! Today I had an EPIC conversation with Dana Trixie Flynn, one of the most inspiring yoga teachers out there. Dana owns TWO yoga studios. One is called The Church of Yoga in New Orleans and the other is called Laughing Lotus, which has various locations including San Francisco. She has been teaching over 28 years. She brings so much wisdom and happiness to this episode. This convo was also REALLY COOL because I got to meet Dana IRL aka IN REAL LIFE! She just happened to be in San Francisco. She came over to my apartment, and we had a rad conversation about being connected and the importance of laughing together. She is an amazing human and an outstanding yoga teacher that understands yoga from the deepest perspective. We discuss all things yoga and how to step into our own individual awesomeness. She also presents a great reminder that joy is now and how we are all connected. EnJOY this episode.Follow Dana on Instagram @danatrixieflynnThis show is sponsored by Breitenbush Hot Springs https://breitenbush.com/MUSIC: Process by 92elmSUPPORT THE SHOW: If you find this podcast valuable you can support it directly by visiting https://dannipomplun.com/support/WRITE A REVIEW: If you like the podcast, please leave a review or rating on iTunes! A few years ago, after a bunch of rugs had been pulled, I walked into Dana Trixie Flynn’s yoga class in the Flatiron district of New York City. Off the street, through a weirdly corporate lobby, up an elevator, I opened a door with a neon pink Laughing Lotus sign to another world. Bright, playful, almost cartooney murals of gods and goddesses cover the walls of a long hallway into this kind of yoga Disneyland meets church. A huge yoga center by New York City standards that’s been going strong for 20 years, with 3 different studios, a huge teaching staff, a big free candy bowl of stick on bindees and rub-on gold tattoos. somehow, there’s always glitter stuck to your feet when you put your shoes on to leave. You know when Dana’s in the building because of her laugh, which of course she dropped as a sound check—a loud, over the top, invitation and welcome mat to let it all hang loose. There’s a lot of New Orleans in that laugh. More on that later. Her get up’s are as vivid and crazy as her tattoos, full sleeves and then some, there will always be extra leopard print, and probably a Laughing Lotus tee shirt tie dyed with the Dalai Lama or Janis Joplin in silhouette. Her hair a shock of whichever shade of the rainbow feels right, a lotus probably shaved into one side. The first words out of her mouth: Welcome, family. Dana’s one of the humans who makes New York, New York. So full of possibility, pride, play, She’s one of my joy gurus One of my goals in this podcast is to introduce you to them, teachers and leaders who are catalysts of transformation—humans who are creating communities and spaces of communal growth, whether brick and mortar, or digital, and daring to create funky family over a sterile business exchange, and stir soulful connections instead of envy or aspiration. Leaders whose mission is to inspire—which is another way of saying, to breathe together. Dana and I talk about her story and her work, which is basically just been various forms leading dance marathons. We talk a little bit about the history of yoga and its modern lineage, and I want right now to invite to stick around, especially if yoga’s not your thing, because it’s not really about yoga. Yoga’s not about yoga. It’s about everything. For me, yoga is any moment movement becomes a doorway to the heart. And that can mean the smallest movement—a shift of attention to a breath. One rep or step beyond what you thought possible. Ecstatic dance that spins you out of the old thought patterns. A moment of intentional stillness. Any moment we alter. Dana and I talk about yoga and jazz and sex and God and New York and spontaneity and discipline and creativity and community and New Orleans and resistance and rot and grace. We talk and weave in music, cause it’s our favorite short-cut to God. We talk about scavaging for joy. We talk about altering together. Welcome to the conversation with @DanaTrixieFlynn. This week's episode is like a shot of happy for your soul. I spoke to Dana Trixie Flynn, co-founder of Laughing Lotus about her new project: Dana is working on opening a donation-based yoga studio in the seventh ward of New Orleans. If you know Dana at all, you know how much she lives, breathes, and loves music -- so this new center will have live New Orleans jazz music. In this interview with Dana, I felt how uniquely suited she is to set up this studio and to nurture her students. She is all at once gutsy, big-hearted, charismatic, empathic, and bad ass.
