This week on Real Talk with Rachael, I'm speaking once again with Lee Strobel. Lee is a New York Times bestselling author whose books have sold millions of copies worldwide. He earned a journalism degree at the University of Missouri and was awarded a Ford Foundation fellowship to study at Yale Law School, where he received a Master of Studies in Law degree. He was a journalist for fourteen years at the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers, winning Illinois' top honors for investigative reporting (which he shared with a team he led) and public service journalism from United Press International. Lee also taught First Amendment Law at Roosevelt University. A former atheist, he served as a teaching pastor at three of America's largest churches. Today he's founding director of the Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics at Colorado Christian University. Lee and his wife, Leslie, have been married for more than fifty years and live in Texas. Their daughter, Alison, and son, Kyle, are also authors. Key Points from Our Conversation: Lee wrote Is God Real? at the request of his publisher after realizing how many Google searches have been performed on the topic. People are deconstructing or leaving Christianity due to increased skepticism and less popularity among younger generations. Evidence for the resurrection is the key tenant of the Christian faith. We can have confidence in this evidence based on execution, early reports, empty tomb, and eyewitnesses Many people will point to suffering as a case against a good, loving God, but true love involves free will. We as imperfect humans have allowed evil and suffering to exist, but in His goodness, He fixes the things He had no part in breaking. It can be easy to feel as though God is too hidden, but often it's not that He isn't instructing us, it's that He's saying something we'd rather not hear. A majority of Christians tend to rely on their personal experiences as validation of His existence, which is a valid expression of faith. However, we need to know the evidence as we will be challenged by those who have had different experiences. The "apologetic pyramid" involves looking logically through the evidence that points to Christianity from three different world views  - theism, atheism, and polytheism. Only Christianity passes the test of logic and livability. Let's Get Real Practical: As we move into the new year, I'm pausing, processing, and praying about where the Lord wants to take the show in 2024. In the meantime, please take some time to process and pray through 2023 with my latest Talk Therapy series. When most of us think of an "evangelist", it's usually a heroic example like Billy Graham or else a bit of an oddball operating on the fringe of our church. We don't see ourselves as Billy and we don't want others to think we're the oddballs, so we shy away from evangelism altogether. Our guest on PEP Talk today wants us to realise that different types of evangelism can match our unique personality and gifts. This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with Atheist-turned-Christian, Lee Strobel about his documentary The Case for Heaven. Lee is the former award-winning legal editor of The Chicago Tribune and a New York Times best-selling author of more than forty books and curricula that have sold fourteen million copies in total. He currently serves as Founding Director of the Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics at Colorado Christian University. In 2017, Lee's spiritual journey was depicted in an award-winning motion picture, The Case for Christ, which showed in theaters around the world. Lee and his wife, Leslie, have been married for forty-eight years. Their daughter, Alison, is a novelist and homeschooling expert (www.goodschooling.net), and their son, Kyle, is a professor of spiritual theology at the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. Key Points from Our Conversation: If you're in a relationship with an unbeliever, be sure to build your relationship with God while maintaining the relationship with your spouse. It's also vital to have a good spiritual mentor to help guide you. Lee wrote The Case for Heaven after a near-death experience and through his research found that the evidence shows our souls live on after death. There are two aspects of the afterlife - the intermediate state when the soul leaves the body and lives on with the Lord or apart from Him and the second state when we are reunited with our resurrected bodies and spend eternity in physical heaven or hell. The research about near-death experiences shows that the commonalities are consistent with Christian theology. There are two common misconceptions about hell - it's not a place of fire and brimstone, that's just a metaphor to indicate it's the worst place to be. There also seems to be different degrees of hell, which would be consistent with the justice of God. God doesn't send people to hell, He honors their free will choice to remain separated from Him. There is not enough research to support loved ones being able to contact us after they pass. The Bible teaches there is a chasm between the living and the dead and it's an area we're warned not to get involved with. You will never regret being courageous for Christ. Have you ever experienced a near death experience? Have you ever wondered what Heaven is like? Will there be marriage or even our favorite dogs in Heaven?  Well, friends, We are tackling all of that in this amazing episode with my new friend, the one and only, Lee Strobel! This one is very special and a bit vulnerable for me. I was moved in the moment and shared something I've never shared before.  After a near death experience several years ago, Lee knew he needed to tackle life's last and, in his opinion, most important question—what happens once we die, which was a bit of a pivot from his normal line of work. In fact, as an atheist-turned-Christian, he has been described in the Washington Post as “one of the evangelical community's most popular apologists.” Lee joins me on the show today to talk about his latest book, The Case for Heaven: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for Life After Death, and the things he learned after two years of researching, interviews and studying the Bible.  Listen to learn more about:  Near-Death Experiences (NDE) and if we can trust them or not What neuroscience tells us about our souls and surviving the demise of our bodies What physics, history and philosophy say about life after death The difference between annihilationism and universalism and why it matters Favorite quotes: 1. Look at what actually takes place during a near death experience, not how people interpret it. Because people can interpret it through the lens of their worldview. So what actually happens during most near death experiences is consistent with what the Bible tells us about the afterlife. 2. Heaven will resemble our present Earth, but it would be a transformed place for transformed people. 3. If you look at the cosmos, you look at the stars. You look at these billions of galaxies that are light years away. When we look, we say ‘Well, we'll never be able to get to those.' In heaven, what if in a mere thought, you could explore a distant galaxy? 4. On earth, we have certain colors that we can see and it's based on the color spectrum of the light from the sun, but in heaven, the color spectrum would be based on the light of God. We will see colors that we can't even describe in this world because they're not in our color spectrum. In this episode I answer this question:  1. If someone wanted to start reading the Bible for personal growth, where would you have then start?  (39:45) Great things we discussed:  1. Lee Strobel 2. The Case for Heaven: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for Life After Death  3. Case for Christ 4. It's A Wonderful Life 5. Return of the God Hypothesis: Three Scientific Discoveries That Reveal the Mind Behind the Universe 6. Lee Strobel Center on Evangelism and Applied Apologetics  7. Yellowstone 8. Joy To The World  9.
