Show #804   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and hel p you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER via Patreon RICHARD LUPINSKY   'ONE MILLION MILE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY IS NOW 'READY TO PRODUCE' "The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." Zeng Yuqun, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), has said the Ningde-based manufacturing firm has the capability of making a battery pack that can last for about 16 years, powering an electric vehicle for 1.24 million miles." writes Newsweek: "According to the SCMP, CATL signed a two-year contract to supply batteries to Tesla in February this year, and its technology is set to be incorporated into the Model 3 range of vehicles being made at Musk's new gigafactory located in Shanghai."   On Elon: "We're getting along well and he's a fun guy. He's talking about cost all day long, and I'm making sure we have the solutions."   https://www.newsweek.com/tesla-elon-musk-one-million-mile-battery-ready-produce-chinese-partner-catl-says-1509293   FORD REVEALS ESCAPE PHEV PRICE, RANGE AND MORE FOR U.S. "Ford announced its first new plug-in hybrid model in the U.S. market, the Ford Escape PHEV, which earlier was launched in Europe as Ford Kuga PHEV. The Escape PHEV might be one of the top-selling plug-in hybrids and a major competitor to the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It will start at less than $35,000 (MSRP), before destination charge and an eligible federal tax credit of probably over $6,700." says InsideEVs: " The EPA-estimated all-electric range will be about 37 miles (59.5 km) so really not bad, although the RAV4 Prime is able to go up to 42 miles (67.6 km). The battery pack (14.4 kWh) is installed under the second-row seats."   Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product development and purchasing officer said: “The original Ford Escape was the world’s first hybrid SUV and the all-new Ford Escape plug-in hybrid represents how far we’ve come in technology and efficiency. The all-new Escape plug-in has more power and more passenger space than the Fusion Energi plug-in, as well as four times the cargo volume behind its second-row seats. Escape also has an additional 11 miles of all-electric driving range before it uses a drop of gas.”   https://insideevs.com/news/427357/ford-escape-phev-price-range-us/   VOLKSWAGEN REPLACES DIESS WITH RALF BRANDSTÄTTER FOR THE VW BRAND "Ralf Brandstätter is the Volkswagen brand's new CEO as a promotion over his previous role as the marque's chief operating officer. He takes over the role from Herbert Diess who is currently the CEO of both the VW brand and VW Group as a whole. " reports Motor1.com: "The company's board positions this change as letting Diess put a greater emphasis on running the business, rather than splitting his focus between two roles.  The shakeup comes amid VW having some problems in Europe. The company had to halt deliveries of the new Golf because of an issue with the software for the emergency call function – a mandated feature in Europe. The problem affected around 15,000 cars that the automaker had already delivered to customers.  There are also rumors about problems with the software suite in the company's forthcoming ID.3 electric car. The exact nature of the issue isn't clear, but elements within the system are allegedly not able to communicate correctly. There are reportedly over 10,000 technicians working to solve the problem."   Spiegel.de reports (Google Translate from German): "There is also a problem with the electric ID.3, with which VW wants to build a Golf successor in the mass market and establish an E series with billions of dollars in investment. The model from the Zwickau plant, which is to be ordered from mid-June, will initially only come with a slimmed-down range of functions. Reason: software delays."   https://www.motor1.com/news/427604/volkswagen-new-boss/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news   https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/vw-konzernchef-diess-gibt-fuehrung-der-kernmarke-ab-a-5a78ea2b-a531-4f94-b995-dae144216e5a   CHINA'S BYD IN TALKS TO SUPPLY JLR FROM UK BATERY PLANT "Chinese EV and battery specialist BYD is in talks with Jaguar Land Rover to supply automotive batteries from a UK plant, a source with knowledge of the situation said." writes Automotive News Europe: "JLR CEO Ralf Speth has previously said the UK needs its own battery cell production, but operated independently of JLR. The UK would be BYD’s first European battery cell factory but the company is also looking at other European locations, the source said. JLR currently sells the Jaguar I-Pace electric crossover, which is built by Magna Steyr in Austria. It plans to produce a full-electric version of the Jaguar XJ sedan at its Castle Bromwich factory in England."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/chinas-byd-talks-supply-jlr-uk-battery-plant   WIRELESS CHARGING UPDATE "Wireless parking places, if they work well with a variety of vehicles, are primed to be part of the gold rush. WiTricity's charging coils, which China chose for its national wireless standard in May, can reach parked electric sports cars and SUVs alike with clearance ranging from 4 in.–10 in." says CNBC: "Charging vehicles in motion is on the table with existing technology too, since the distance between a car's carriage and the road stays fairly constant. Fellow wireless charging company Qualcomm Halo, which WiTricity acquired last year, has built a 300-ft test track in France that can charge cars driving at highway speeds. And Israeli start-up Electreon is electrifying short stretches of road in Israel and Sweden. If automakers can settle on one standard technology, omnipresent, automatic charging stations would let electric vehicles go farther on smaller batteries, reminiscent of Tesla's imagined fuel-free planes. Hands-free charging also will grow more essential if cars get more autonomous, since they won't be able to plug themselves in."   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/08/researchers-work-on-the-next-generation-of-wireless-charging-for-evs.html   ALL-NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER The New Fiat 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback makes its debut today following the successful unveiling of the New 500 ‘la Prima’ convertible in March. The New 500 ‘la Prima’ hatchback – including the fitment of the easyWallbox – is priced at £26,995, including PiCG. The lithium-ion batteries, with a capacity of 42kWh, give the New 500 a range of up to 199 miles in the WLTP cycle. To optimise charging time, the New 500 electric is equipped with an 85kW fast charge system. The New 500 also comes with a 11kW onboard AC charger. Sherpa mode optimises the available resources to reduce fuel consumption to a minimum -  maximum speed is limited to 50mph; accelerator response is managed in order to reduce energy consumption; and deactivation of both the climate control system and heated seats. The electric motor has an output of 87kW, providing a maximum speed of 93mph (self-limited) and acceleration from zero to 62mph in 9 seconds and zero to 31mph in 3.1 seconds. The New 500 electric is the first FCA car to be equipped with the new UConnect 5 infotainment system, the connected platform designed for the future. Developed with the idea of providing customers with a completely new user experience, UConnect 5 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operating systems and can be used in wireless mode. My Remote: checks the battery charge level from a smartphone; schedule vehicle charging during the most convenient time periods; know the exact location of the car; lock and unlock the doors and set the climate control system.   MERCEDES GLA 250 E 2020 REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and B 250 e plug-in hybrids are available to order now.  . The GLA with plug-in hybrid drive system will follow a few weeks later   "The new GLA 250 e is plug-in hybrid motoring at its best, and for many prospective buyers this could be the GLA to go for. Impressive all-electric running combines with surprisingly sporty yet economical hybrid drive when the petrol engine is brought into play." is how AutoExpress reviewed it: "Joining electrified versions of the latest CLA and CLA Shooting Brake in British Mercedes showrooms is the new GLA 250 e, which shapes up as a rival for plug-in hybrid versions of the latest BMW X1 and X2 and the Volvo XC40. Total system power stands at 215bhp and 450Nm, while the electric power is stored in a 15.6kWh battery. The GLA 250 e can recharge at 24kW."   38 miles on EV power, 86mph on the motor.   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/gla/352426/new-mercedes-gla-250-e-2020-review   The Mercedes B 250 e is now on sale, with first deliveries expected in late summer. It is only available with AMG Line Executive equipment grade or higher, so prices start from £35,280.   CHINA’S EV MARKET IS RECOVERING "In China, exactly 55,829 battery electric cars and 14,370 plug-in hybrids from local production were sold in May. The sales figures for so-called New Energy Vehicles were thus 25.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year, but 19.5 per cent higher than in April 2020." reports Chris Randall for electrive: "The best-selling electrified model in May was the Tesla Model 3: CPCA statistics show 11,095 units of the locally manufactured American electric sedan sold in China. That is a good three times as many as in April (3,635). However, sales of the Model 3 in April were also down sharply on March (10,160). Tesla itself probably contributed to the new high with a price reduction for the Model 3 Standard Range announced at the end of April. "   That price drop kept it in the window for Chinese subsidies. And what about the Long Range RWD Model 3 they started delivering at the end of May?   David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData: "This is the second consecutive monthly rise for the Chinese vehicle market, as it rebounds from sharp declines in the first quarter caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus. China was first into the COVID-19 crisis and first out of it, so developments in China’s economy are being watched very closely."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/09/chinas-ev-market-is-recovering-sowly/   WOULD YOU SWAP TO AN ELECTRIC CAR IF THEY WERE £6,000 CHEAPER? Government could announce a scrappage scheme for only electric vehicles Motorists who scrap an old petrol or diesel car would get £6,000 off a new EV Plans could be announced next month, according to report from The Telegraph It mirrors plans in Germany that are part of a €130bn Covid-19 stimulus package EV buyers there will receive an industry and government-backed subsidy of €9k   "It could mean that the price of the British-build Nissan Leaf electric vehicle falls from £26,845 to just £20,845 and would see a new VW ID.3 zero-emission hatchback cost around the same as an entry-level petrol-powered Golf. The Prime Minister would also see the move as a positive break for UK manufacturing, with the popular Nissan Leaf build at the Japanese firm's factory in Sunderland and Mini's Plant Oxford producing the all-new Mini Electric." writes This Is Money: "The price of a Nissan Leaf would drop to around £20,000, which will be on par with the Nissan Qashqai, starting from £20,565 in the UK. The all-new £24,400 Mini Electric would fall to just £18,400 - a like-for-like fee as a petrol Mini Cooper. Tesla's most affordable Model 3 would decrease from around £40,000 to £34,000, around the same a a mid-spec BMW 3 Series saloon."   Read more here: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-8398385/Boris-Johnson-considering-slashing-prices-new-EVs-6-000.html   Add £3000 for the PiCG and that's £9000 off the price.   Fiona Howarth, chief executive at Octopus Electric Vehicles: "'Consumers who want to switch to greener driving can be put off by the more expensive initial outlay for an electric vehicle compared to petrol or diesel. But by reducing this cost, EVs will become more affordable and dramatically increase uptake. In 2019, around 100 people every day were losing their life due to poor air quality. The government can really make a difference and save lives by encouraging the switch to clean, electric cars."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #741   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 7th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Welcome to PHILIP TRAUTMAN as a new PRODUCER of this here podcast.   WHY DID AUDI REGISTER A1 ETRON Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt   #Audi registered a small number of pure-electric A1 BEV models in March, suggesting an A1 badged BEV is likely on the way, or alternatively Audi are using it as a test mule for the #MEB based model soon to roll off @vwsachsen_de 's Zwickau line.   In 2010 Audi did make the A1 e-tron, it was a protoype version of the A1 which had an electric motor driving the front wheels but a very small 12kWh battery pack. In the boot floor, where you would find the the BMW i3 range extender engine, Audi put a 245cc Wankel engine to generate electricity. Very similar to the current Nissan e-power cars. =   In Feb of this year, Auto Express said: "Audi ready to expand its e-tron portfolio with a new all-electric supermini model, which will sit on the VW Group’s MEB platform. Audi is planning a huge expansion of its e-tron electric range over the next five years – and now a senior official at the firm has admitted to Auto Express that this wider range will stretch to a small car based on the VW Group’s entry-level EV platform. Known as MEB Entry, the architecture was revealed at the VW Group annual conference last spring. It’s designed to support vehicles of around four metres in length, about the same as a Polo or an Audi A1."   But that was due to be 2022.   MAZDA MX-30 WITH ROTARY ENGINE OFFICIALLY UNDER CONSIDERATION "The Mazda MX-30 electric crossover will be available in Europe in 2021, and it will possibly get a rotary engine as a range extender, according to a new announcement from the automaker." reports Motor1: "The version of the MX-30 coming at launch has an electric motor making 143 horsepower (106 kilowatts) and uses a relatively small 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery. This setup offers an estimated range of just 130 miles (209 kilometers). So far, there are no plans to bring the crossover EV to the United States, but it's hard to imagine the vehicle being competitive in the market with such a low range."   https://www.motor1.com/news/408413/mazda-mx-30-rotary-engine/   TESLA MODEL 3 = 6TH BEST SELLING CAR IN USA "The Tesla Model 3 isn’t done with the headlines, despite the Model Y’s review-grabbing arrival and the coronavirus pandemic we’re dealing with at the moment. Tesla has climbed the rankings of the top selling cars in the USA and placed the Model 3 on the 6th rung*." reports CleanTechnica: "That’s up from 9th in 2019 as a whole, up from 13th in the 1st quarter of 2019, and up from 7th in the 4th quarter of 2019."   Note: This is based on official figures from other automakers but an estimate for the Model 3. Tesla only reports global sales, without splitting them out by country or region, and has also started combining Model 3 and Model Y sales/deliveries. That said, CleanTechnica’s estimates are based on a variety of sources and data points.   Camry, Corolla, Civic, Altima, Accord and Tesla Model 3.   As for top vehicles, Ford F-Series, Silverado, Ram Pickup.   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/05/tesla-model-3-6th-best-selling-car-in-usa/   UK EV REGISTRATIONS BREAK RECORDS “Registrations of electric vehicles have broken almost all records in March 2020" says Green Car Reports: "A combined figure of more than 18,500 is almost 6,000 units more than the previous record from September 2019. Pure-EVs reached their highest ever total, with almost 11,700 registered during the month. The previous record was a little over 7,700, also in September 2019. As might be expected with such a large increase on EV units registered, market share for pure-electric models hit a new record too."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8886/record-breaking-march-for-ev-industry/   VW SAYS THE COMBUSTION ENGINE IS FAR FROM DEAD "While some have rushed to announce the demise of the ICE is coming, the peeps from Wolfsburg don’t see it that way. In an interview with Autocar, technical chief Matthias Rabe explained why VW argues the traditional engine “will have a longer future than some people predict.” While synthetic fuels are still far from being massively produced for the automotive industry, he believes it makes sense to invest in e-fuels since EVs still have limitations in terms of range while their batteries are still large and heavy." according to Motor1: "Even though EVs will be the number one priority from now on, investments in combustion engines are still planned to update the vast array of gasoline and diesel powertrain VW sell across its many brands."   https://www.motor1.com/news/408134/vw-combustion-engine-not-dead/   WATCH PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S BLOW PAST ITS TOP SPEED ON THE AUTOBAHN [audio] from Automann.tv in the Porsche Taycan Turbo S   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0IAgkHpU54   KIA XCEED PHEV GOES ON SALE IN THE UK The addition of Plug-in Hybrid variants to the Kia XCeed marks the next step in Kia Motors’ vehicle electrification strategy. Now on sale in UK showrooms, the Kia XCeed PHEV represents the first time Kia has brought electrified powertrains to the Ceed family. The 8.9kWh battery pack is located alongside the 37-litre fuel tank beneath the rear bench, unlike many other plug-in hybrid vehicles, in which the battery pack takes up valuable cargo space. And a 44.5kW electric motor, The XCeed PHEV ‘3’ model is capable of travelling up to 36.6 miles on zero-emissions electric power, while the ‘First Edtion’ can travel up to 33.5 miles   LONG RANGE RWD MODEL 3 OWNERS GET AUTOPILOT "Elon Musk has stated that owners of the now-discontinued Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive configuration will have the opportunity to purchase the company’s basic Autopilot in the future at a discounted price." says Teslarati: "Currently, owners of the Model 3 who purchased their vehicle before April 2019 did not have basic Autopilot included with the car. Owners of early build Model 3s were required to purchase basic Autopilot functions for $3,000. Tesla discontinued the production of the LR RWD Model 3 in June 2019. The LR RWD variant of the Model 3 offered a 325-mile EPA-estimated range rating along with a 4.9-second 0-60 MPH speed, just half a second slower than its sibling, the LR AWD variant. The car was a good option for those who wanted a vehicle that had a lot of range but did not need the all-wheel-drive capability."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-basic-autopilot-model-3-lr-rwd-price/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 239 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #442   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 13th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ELON TWEETS We'll kick off with a series of tweets by Elon Musk and because I'm being selfish I'll start with the one which is of most interest to RHD buyers in the UK. I actually missed this tweet but it was sent to me by podcast supporter David Finch...   "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k." "Ahem RHD"   Journalist Tom Randall: "Tesla shares fell after Nikkei reported that Panasonic is freezing spending on more Gigafactory expansion. Panasonic said it reached 35 GWh/yr capacity in March. That's already enough to build over 500k Model 3/yr+Powerwalls—more than Tesla can handle" Elon replied: "Incorrect. Pana cell lines at Giga are only at ~24GWh/yr & have been a constraint on Model 3 output since July. No choice but to use other suppliers for Powerwall/Powerpack cells. Tesla won’t spend money on more capacity until existing lines get closer to 35GWh theoretical."   As for Full Self Driving Elon said: "Please note that the price of the Tesla Full Self-Driving option will increase substantially over time" "Starting May 1"   On the subject of reliability: "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k."   On the subject of Full Self Driving, Patreon Supporter Cesar Trujillo said to me: "Shooooot. With all the Tesla news I wondered if FSD autopilot would come down in price again. I looked on my car and on my Tesla account and there is no where to upgrade anymore. I should have done it when it was cheap. I only bought the enhanced autopilot not full self driving during the fire sale."   And on the AI podcast: "“Buying a car today is an investment into the future. I think the most profound thing is that if you buy a Tesla today, I believe you are buying an appreciating asset – not a depreciating asset. The cars currently being produced, with the hardware currently being produced, are capable of full self-driving.”   GM REPORTEDLY WON’T INVEST IN ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK STARTUP RIVIAN "A proposed tie-up between the largest U.S.-based automaker and a fledgling company trying to make an electric pickup truck may be doomed, based on a new report from Bloomberg. The publication reported Friday that General Motors and Rivian have ended discussions that would have had the Detroit-based auto giant give the startup a healthy cash infusion to bring its products to market." says Zac fro InsideEVs.com: "The deal would have placed GM alongside Amazon as a major investor in the startup manufacturer, as the tech giant announced a strategic investment with Rivian in February that was part of a $700 million equity round. GM’s role was reportedly to help Rivian with manufacturing and parts purchasing, while GM would have received the engineering it needed to make an electric pickup truck before key rivals Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles would be able to. Trucks are essential to all three of those automakers’ profits."   https://insideevs.com/gm-rivian-electric-pickup-truck-amazon/   TESLA MODEL 3 LEASE PROGRAM OPENS DOOR TO FUTURE RIDE-HAILING NETWORK "Tesla has officially launched its Model 3 leasing program to include any variant of the all-electric midsize sedan." says Teslarati: "Unlike traditional agreements, the Model 3 vehicles under lease will not be available for purchase once the lease matures. Tesla intends to use those vehicles as part of its coming autonomous ride-hailing network, a service dubbed as the Tesla Network. The decision to maintain ownership of its leased Model 3 fleet for such future use indicates Tesla’s high level of confidence in the development of its Full Self-Driving program. Any revenue lost from not offering its used cars for purchase is clearly expected to be generated through other profitable means"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-lease-ride-hailing-network/   TESLA OPENS ORDERS FOR CHEAPER MODEL 3 VERSION IN EUROPE AND CHINA "Along with the changes to its vehicle lineup last night, Tesla also opened orders for a cheaper version of the Model 3 in European markets and China." writes Fred at Electrek: "After removing the Mid-Range and Long-Range RWD Model 3, Tesla is now offering only Standard Range Plus along with the Long Range AWD and Performance versions. Tesla says that the other versions can still be ordered as “off-the-menu” items, but that’s now Tesla’s main Model 3 lineup. For European markets, the introduction of the Standard Range Plus version results in the cheapest Tesla ever being available on the old continent. In Norway, Model 3 now starts 377,020 Kroners, which is equal to about $44,375 USD."   https://electrek.co/2019/04/12/tesla-opens-orders-cheaper-model-3-europe-china/   AUTOCAR FIRST DRIVE: REDESIGNED, EURO-SPEC KIA SOUL EV "We recently shared Autocar’s first drive of the all-new Kia Soul EV. However, that drive took place in South Korea. Now, the publication has access to a Euro-spec model and provides initial insight." says InsidEVs.com: "The gas-powered Soul is a popular vehicle in the U.S. due to its low price and considerable versatility. However, Autocar points out that it’s not nearly as sought-after in Europe. Kia is moving to change that by offering a completely redesigned all-electric Soul with a 64-kWh battery pack and plenty of range. In addition, while the new, gas-powered Soul will still be sold in the U.S., European customers will only be able to buy the battery-electric variant. Autocar says that while Kia’s e-Niro may be more practical due to its greater cargo capacity, the Soul has an edge when it comes to its interior, and it’s performance is about equal to that of the Niro EV   TOP GEAR DISSECTS THE PININFARINA BATTISTA, THE 1,874-HP EV "During the Geneva Motor Show last month, we saw the most powerful road car ever to come from Italy. No, it wasn’t a Ferrari or a Lamborghini – actually, it was the first creation from Automobili Pininfarina, which is now an automaker, not just a design studio. Pininfarina says the Battista is the “world’s first pure electric luxury hyper GT” and the car deserves every single word from this colorful description. In a new video, the folks over at Top Gear explain why." reports Motor1: "Probably the most interesting part of the video shines more light on the construction of the Battista, starting with information about the 120-kWh battery, which is, in fact, the same battery package you can find in a Rimac Concept_Two. Reid then talks about the four electric motors that propel that car – and one important thing we learned is that most of the car’s driving modes actually limit the amount of torque you have available in order to make the machine more easily controllable for the driver."   https://www.motor1.com/news/344319/top-gear-dissects-pininfarina-battista/   CAR AND DRIVER SAYS KIA NIRO EV IS A SPECTACULAR ELECTRIC CAR "Kia isn't helping its sales prospects by limiting the Niro EV to only 12 states (California and seven of the other ZEV states—but neither Vermont nor Maine—plus Georgia, Texas, Washington, and Hawaii). Although Niro EVs are already being produced in Kia's Hwaseong, South Korea, plant and are en route to U.S. dealer lots, pricing has yet to be announced. But a safe bet is that they will arrive at the same $37,495 the Kona Electric demands. Plus, Hyundai and Kia have sold so few electrified vehicles that theirs will get the maximum $7500 federal tax credit for years to come—a perk for which Teslas and Chevys no longer qualify."   https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a26144426/2019-kia-niro-ev-driven/   KIA MIGHT START MAKING ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE "Kia is experiencing a success story with its lineup of plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles. Which has now presented it with a problem of making enough to satisfy demand. That’s why it’s reportedly looking into building its electrified cars in Europe." reports InsideEVs.com: "While the Niro, Optima and Soul hybrids and electrics are currently all made in South Korea for global consumption, Kia may leverage its plant in Slovakia to supply European markets, according to Automotive News Europe. Kia Europe Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera told the publication the company would need to sell 32,000 EVs every year from 2021 to comply with the EU’s emissions regulations. Kia is being pressured by the EU to cut its fleet average for C02 emissions to 94 g/km by 2021, something it can only do by selling more plug-ins."   https://insideevs.com/kia-electric-cars-europe-production/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 9th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   AUDI CONTINUE ADVERTISING E-TRON I’m not a fan of ads, but in my Twitter timeline I was very happy to see Audi spending money on social media with a 12 second video of the Audi e-tron in action. "Join the electric revolution. Order your #etron now" The link goes to beta.audi.co.uk/electric-car/e-tron.html with the heading "Electric Goes Audi". On the page the sections are The e-tron, Charging, Grants and Benefits, Finance and Service Plans, Technology, Pod Point and Formula E. THe e-tron from £71,490. The e-tron launch edition £82,240. "The special Launch Edition adds even more allure to the already stylish e-tron. 21” alloy wheels, black styling details and full body-coloured bumpers give the car an immediate and dramatic presence. Many advanced features, such as Matrix LED headlights, come as standard; others include the unique virtual door mirrors, Adaptive Cruise Assist and Comfort remote preconditioning. And for an extra sense of light and spaciousness, there’s a panoramic glass sunroof that displays the skies to all occupants. Image includes optional Catalunya red, metallic paint and black roof rails."   CCS COMBO CHARGES TESLA MODEL 3 The very first European-spec Model 3's in Europe are in the hands of customers and immediately they headed not to Superchargers, but to the High Powered Chargers like Fastned and IONITY. Now some of them can't charge at the full 350kW because they're waiting for liquid cooled cables but they'll certainly do 150kW I gather. This is interesting because Tesla has always has its own connector but in Europe they're fitting the CCS Combo plug. So no more CHAdeMO adapter to purchase. The previous spec of CCS was limited to 200amps but the new protocol CCS2.0 allows for a lot more juice, and that's what I mean by High Powered Charger. And so the Netherlands-based Fastned, who tweeted a graphic with the charge speed they had recorded on their system. The MOdel 3 went straight to 125kW and stayed there to 50% state of charge, dropped down to 50kW at 75% and gradually went down from there and it tapered off. What I thought was interesting was that at 50% it drops off quite quickly. But is that unfair, because my experience of Supercharger a Model S it doesn't hit peak speed for that long, but the taper off seems more gentle. Let me know!   (Explanation of why charge speed tapers for beginners)   ELON FLIES TO EUROPE And isn't it weird what the internet can show us. As I was working today I saw tweets from people with plane tracker apps saying Elon Musk had taken off in his Gulfstream jet and was headed East, crossing the Atlantic. It soon because clear he was heading to Europe. It’s interesting because he asks for his callsign to be blocked so this was an aviation expert who worked out the route of the N628TS. He landed around 1715 local time in Ostend, near to where the cars were delivered to Zeebrugge. Not only is he very hands on with any issues, but also it’s fair that over the weekend he sees for himself the logistics on the ground.   RENAULT ZOE TO GET CCS COMBO AND 22KW ONBOARD AC A story I came across because I follow Eric Feunteun, he's the Electric Vehicle Program Director for Renault: "The European passenger plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market ended the year on a positive note, registering a near record 40,500 units in December with the 2018 count ending at a record 386,000 deliveries" according to CleanTechnica. The Zoe was the December winner with 5,382 in the month, well ahead of the LEAF, the I-PACE and any Tesla. On the year 2018 the Zoe sold 38,538. "This positive score is the result of LG providing more batteries to the French carmaker, thanks to the ramp up of its European factory in Wroclaw, Poland. Without the battery bottleneck, we should finally see the real demand for the Zoe."   And late last night I also found an article in French, so I was relying on Google Translate with this one. It's on largus.fr. The new Zoe is being revealed at the Geneva show soon, and will be based on the new Clio. Inside the main dash will be 7 or 10 inches, with the 10 inch dash also showing the sat nav just like the latest VW system. THen the centre screen will be 7" or 9.3", and have all the controls including climate. There's adaptive cruise and Level 2 self driving, so Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Jam system. The battery was upgraded in 2017 to a 41kWh. That stays although more power will be on tap, but they add CCS Combo plug AND 22kW onboard AC charging. That's the perfect combo. DC Fast Charging or AC Semi-Fast. One of my listeners Mike Winter explained it's because of the sheer amount of 22kW posts in France. Production starts in Q2 and marketed at the end of Summer. Production will be 440 a day.   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/03/europe-ev-sales-renault-zoe-wins-in-december-nissan-leaf-takes-2018-title/   https://translate.google.com/translate?depth=1&hl=en&nv=1&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&sp=nmt4&tl=en&u=https://www.largus.fr/actualite-automobile/renault-zoe-2-2019-tout-savoir-sur-la-nouvelle-zoe-electrique-9620390.html&xid=17259,15700021,15700186,15700190,15700248   POLESTAR 1 SPIED PLAYING ON A FROZEN LAKE "Polestar’s big debut on the automotive market will soon become a reality. The brand from Sweden is putting the finishing touches on the Polestar 1 which should go into mass production before the end of 2019. Still, apparently, there are several things that need to be refined before the sports coupe reaches the production phase." reports Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "[Spy photographs show] a prototype of the car doing some high-speed tests on a frozen lake somewhere in Sweden. Almost every part of this trial car looks ready to be put on the assembly lines but the test drivers are probably gathering more data about the vehicle’s behavior under certain conditions."   https://www.motor1.com/news/304493/polestar-1-spied-winter-testing/amp/   ALL-NEW 2020 KIA SOUL ELECTRIC SPOTTED IN NEW COLORS InsideEVs is talking about the new Kia Soul EV: "When it debuted in LA, the all-new Kia Soul EV was seen in just a color or two, but now we get to see the long-range electric in a plethora of new hues. These new images, captured at the Kia Irvine site, show us what the Soul EV looks like in colors other than that neon green. There’s a graphite Soul EV with a tan roof. A black version with a red roof and more." From Kia: The next generation Kia Soul EV celebrated its world premiere at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. One of the most upbeat urban compact crossovers is back with even more appeal & upgrades. The vehicle will be powered by a next-generation, state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium-ion polymer 64 kWh battery. That’s the same as what’s found in the Kia Niro EV, which goes some 301 miles per charge (WLTP) or an estimated 260 miles EPA. Considering that the current Soul EV, with its 30-kWh battery pack, is EPA-rated at 111 miles, we figure this 2020 Soul EV, with 64-kWh on board, will travel close to 240 miles per charge, maybe even more. Sadly, since its Kia, this will be a limited offering in the U.S., so availability will be an issue. The 2020 Kia Soul EV is set to utilize a 201 horsepower electric motor, delivering 291 lb-ft of torque. However, the new battery is currently being tested to ascertain precise EPA-estimated range. Results are expected early in 2019 and will be announced at a later date." The curb weight of the Soul EV is a lot less than the eNiro, so that range might be good!   https://insideevs.com/2020-kia-soul-electric-spotted-new-colors/   TESLA AUTOPILOT APPROVED EUROPE "The Tesla Model 3 was officially approved for sale in Europe, but as it turns out the original Type Approval from RDW in the Netherlands doesn’t include the Tesla Autopilot" reported InsideEVs this morning, but then added: "Tesla has reportedly gained European approval for Autopilot." The approval for the feature arrived early on Friday from the Netherlands Vehicle Authority RDW. "The first Model 3 delivered to customers in Europe has disabled Autopilot feature, which according to Tesla is expected to be enabled in Europe next week, when a separate approval will be issued. The slight delay between car sales and enabling Autopilot is apparently caused by the requirement to additionally test the Autopilot for Model 3 (it has different hardware than Autopilot in Model S and Model X)." Meanwhile: "Tesla has opted to offer Enhanced Autopilot as standard for the electric sedan. As could be seen in Tesla’s order pages for China, the offer appears to be available only for Model 3 purchases. Pages for the Model S and X still list the driver-assist suite as a 46,300 yuan (around $6,800) addition." according to Simon at Teslarati: "The inclusion of Enhanced Autopilot is available for all Model 3 orders in the country, meaning even reservations for the Long Range RWD Model 3 –currently the most affordable Tesla available in China — include the driver-assist suite for free.
