A familiar sight on our highways is reaching the end of the line. Kenworth just announced that their W900 semi-cab is being discontinued after 65 years. It's the third longest-running vehicle line behind the Chevrolet Suburban and the Ford F-Series pickup. When you think of a big rig, it's one of the visuals that comes to mind. It's the rig that the Snowman drove in Smokey and the Bandit. The look of this semi hasn't changed since the 1980s. They are so omnipresent that you likely pass one anytime you're driving on the interstate. But to stay competitive, Kenworth is making a change... EPISODE 38 : TESLA CYBER TRUCK POLICE VEHICLE - UPG AFTER DARK In recent news tech firm Oracle announced that they would be piloting a new Tesla Cyber Truck police vehicle for the North America market. In light of this news, the gentleman decided to take on this monstrosity of an idea and put to an Unreasonable Grounds Podcast open discussion. Is the Tesla Cyber Truck platform a possible replacement for the Ford F-Series , Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram in the world of North American rural policing? Or, is this just another media stunt that will be used to develop future technologies and buzz for Oracle and similar distributors. Mike, Wes and Erik delved into the Tesla Cyber Truck in the first ever UGP After Dark episode. And yes folks, the sounds of chip bags rustling is free of charge! The second to last episode of Rock And Roll War Stories! Michael recounts driving two hours to Daytona Beach, FL from Gainesville for a gig and forgetting his guitar, how a poorly considered one night stand lost him a brand new pair of Doc Martens, the time he drove Chuck Wicks' brand new Ford F-Series pickup through the night after a show listening to club music, dealing with a torrential downpour while blinding drunk in Indiana, an Air B&B with no heat in Chicago in February with Freddy Jones Band, and the time Jimmy the bassist for Jameson Rodgers nearly passed out and went deaf at a gig opening for Dierks Bentley in Nashville. And that's only part ONE!

Cybertruck deliveries have begun! With a 2M order backlog the question now becomes how many of these will convert into real orders. In this video I share my projections for Cybertruck sales and demand. Five out of the top eight best-selling vehicles in America are pickup trucks, with a combined 2.1M in sales. The addressable market is clearly massive, but will the crazy design, and electric motor be enough to beat the Ford F-Series for the top spot? Let me know your Cybertruck sales projections below. Right now, I'm estimating 500,000 in 2026 sales at an average selling price of $70,000 generating an incremental $35B in sales for Tesla

On this episode, Chris and Chris discuss how growing up around trucks spawned Chris Swenson's passion for collecting and restoring Ford trucks and eventually sharing his fondness for the "Bumpside" generation with the world. They also run through all the Ford generations and the origination of their nicknames.Ford trucks are known for their generational nicknames, but the fifth generation 1967 - 1972 Ford F-Series are known for their unique three-dimensional spear or "bump" that runs from the front fender all the way back through the bedside. Coined "Bumpsides" by enthusiasts, this generation powered to the pinnacle of American pickup production and popularity with more engine choices, a larger and more comfortable cab and more aesthetically pleasing styling. Chris launched @bumpin_uglys, an Instagram account dedicated to "Bumpsides", that eventually grew a massive following of enthusiasts. That following is what made Chris Swenson the Bumpside aficionado.Thank you Maverick Cornett (@obsmaverick / @mavsfabshop) for requesting Chris Swenson as a guest on the show!Follow the podcast on Instagram and Facebook @classic4x4_trucks, check out our website at classic4x4.com and reach out if we can help you sell your classic, custom and modified truck or 4x4. As we do periodically throughout the year, on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast co-host Bruce Aldrich and I get caught up on the automotive industry news. There's always a lot happening, and our topics cover a wide range. First, car names can mean a lot toward the success or failure of an automobile. We found a recent list on a prominent auto site that lists the top-25 worst car names in history. The list comes to mind with the not-too-long-ago naming of the pending new Ferrari sport utility vehicle. It will be called the Purosangue. The concept cars at 2021 LA Auto Show included the Mullen Five. The EV sedan hasn't been made. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2021. Ferrari, of course, has long been associated with horses and its "Prancing Pony" logo. The new Ferrari is named after the word for an Italian thoroughbred. It's pronounced PURO-o-SAN-gue, and it's a hideous name. The list of the 25 oddball names of cars is a fun read, so have a listen. Also on this episode this I will be attending the LA Auto Show this week (Nov, 16-18) while Bruce produces my daily podcast interviews from the Los Angeles Convention Center. Electric vehicles will again be emphasized this year, and VinFast, the Vietnamese manufacturer, will be again be part of that portion of the show. VinFast will be the first Vietnamese car available in the United States with the pending debut in 2023. Speaking of debuts, as always the LA Auto Show will have its share of global and North American debuts. Manufacturer ambassadors are always par of the LA Auto Show. Image © James Raia/2014. The 115th The LA Auto Show will be held Nov. 18-26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Charge Cars, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, ElectraMeccanica, Fiat, Genesis, GMC, Hummer, Hyundai, INDI EV, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Porsche, Subaru, Supernal (Advanced Air Mobility), Volkswagen, Volvo and the abovementioned VinFast will have all exhibitions. But arguably the best bets, the most consistent, the cars for the every person, are presented every year. New models from the top-10 best-selling vehicles from 2021 will all be presented. Ford continued its dominance with the F-Series pickups accounting for 726,004 sales. The Ram pickup (569,388), Chevrolet Silverado (519,774), Toyota RAV-4 (407,739), Honda CR-V (361,271), Toyota Camry (313,795), Nissan Rogue (285,602), Jeep Cherokee (264,444), Toyota Highlander (264,128) and Honda Civic (263,787) completed the top-10. Despite the continuing chip shortage and Covid-19 ramifications, only the Chevrolet Silverado (down 13 percent), Ford F-Series pickup trucks (8 percent) and Toyota RAV4 (5 percent) had lower sales tallies in 2021 than in 2020. Bollinger Motors exhibited its concept vehicles for the past several years at the LA Auto Show. They've never been manufactured. Image © James Raia/2019. Manufacturers aren't required to detail what vehicles will be shown at the LA Auto Show. Some new offerings have been announced, others will be unveiled as late as the week of the show. Honda recently announced the public availability of the 315-horsepower 2023 Civic Type R. It's the most powerful production vehicle the manufacturer has ever sold, and its will have a starting MSRP of $42,895. Toyota has eliminated V6 Highlander, replacing for 2-23 with a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder. The new model will also feature new multimedia dashboard-area screens and new exterior paint choice, Cypress Green. The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. In June, 2021, Ted Cannis was appointed CEO of Ford Pro, the vitally-important division focused on commercial vehicles like the Ford F-Series trucks and Transit vans. Ford sees enormous opportunity to grow this division in terms of revenues and profits in the next three years. In our conversation, Ted Cannis shares examples of how small to medium sized businesses can get a lot more efficient and profitable in a short space of time through connected car software applications. Ford is also rolling out the F-150 Lightning and E-Transiti to commercial customers in the US and European markets in 2022. This will be a gigantic test to see whether battery-powered vehicles can meet or exceed the experience now delivered by gasoline-powered vehicles. Cannis offers a pragmatic view, saying that electric vehicles will be right for some customers while others - for example companies that do a lot of towing - might prefer to stay with gasoline engines and powertrains, at least for the time being. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGohttps://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=enhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/
There are more and more electric cars on the market as auto manufacturers move toward fleet-wide electrification. In the United States, pickup trucks are massively popular. The top three selling vehicles in the country are all trucks, led by the Ford F-Series. Thus, it is no surprise that automakers are now turning their attention to […]
The VW Golf is the third best-selling car in history, behind the top-selling Toyota Corolla and Ford F-Series of pickup trucks. More than 35 million of the versatile vehicles have sold since the car's debut as a 1974 edition. With the motoring icon approaching its 50th anniversary, author Russell Hayes has expanded and upgraded his book The Volkswagen Golf Story to include the full Golf 7 range and the latest incarnation, the Golf 8. The new edition is available from Behemoth Publishing Co-host Bruce Aldrich is on assignment, so I interview Hayes this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. Russell Hayes has authored his eighth book and second on the VW Golf. "Europe has always been the Golf's natural habitat; it's been one of the top sellers for a long time and I believe it still might be right now, " said Hayes while describing details of his eighth book. "But in the U.S., it's had a very interesting up and down career. VW: The long winding road "Although largely it's been replaced by the Jetta, I found the story of the Golf in the U.S. very interesting because they built them here between 1978 and 1987. It was trying to be a homegrown Golf and it was quite different than the European one." As Hayes details in Episode #222, VW Golf buyers in the U.S. eventually decided they'd rather have a European edition and U.S. production shutdown. The marketing for the second edition of The Volkswagen Golf Story elaborates: "The Volkswagen Golf is a motoring paradox, seemingly never really changing its look but always pushing technical development forward as a ‘classless' car which still carries a ‘premium' feel about it. While the VW Golf wasn't the first front-wheel-drive hatchback, its interpretation established the template for others to follow and the benchmark by which they are still judged today." VW: Lots of key industry players Author Russell Hayes discusses the history of VW in his book Volkswagen Beetles and Buses. From the development of the first VW Golf to interviews with key figures — Volkswagen's first designer to its former chairman — the book is the definitive history of the iconic vehicle. A London-based motoring author, Hayes has written eight books, including the first edition of The Volkswagen Golf Story in 2014. He has also written about the VW Beetle and Type 2 van. Other subjects have been as mixed as Lotus, the Ford Cortina, Aston Martin V8s and the Earls Court Motor Show. Hayes, also a guest on The Weekly Driver Post on Episodes #209 and #153, was formerly a motoring journalist for British magazines and national newspapers. He has also worked for TV programs such as Top Gear, The Car's the Star and Driven. VW: The little car phenomenon Please join me for an intriguing 30 minute-episode as Hayes and I discuss the phenomenon of the Volkswagen Golf. Hayes was also a guest on: Episode #209: The Big Book of Tiny Cars Episode #153: Volkswagen: Beetle to Buses, Smaller and Smarter. Ford's (F) legacy and customer base versus Tesla's (TSLA) brand power. Ford F-Series is the best selling vehicle for nearly 40 years, while Tesla's Cybertruck has over 650,000 preorders. For Tesla, the truck market is key to staying "king of electric", while for Ford, it is life or death with the Ford-150 being its biggest seller. Steve Westly weighs in on the strengths of both companies.
In order, the top 3 best selling vehicles in the U.S. last year were the Ford F Series, Ram Trucks, and the Chevy Silverado. Trucks in general are a large segment so it only makes sense that everyone is gunning to be the next and best electric truck manufacturer. https://evbite.com/upcoming-electric-trucks/

Show #741 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 7th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to PHILIP TRAUTMAN as a new PRODUCER of this here podcast. WHY DID AUDI REGISTER A1 ETRON Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt #Audi registered a small number of pure-electric A1 BEV models in March, suggesting an A1 badged BEV is likely on the way, or alternatively Audi are using it as a test mule for the #MEB based model soon to roll off @vwsachsen_de 's Zwickau line. In 2010 Audi did make the A1 e-tron, it was a protoype version of the A1 which had an electric motor driving the front wheels but a very small 12kWh battery pack. In the boot floor, where you would find the the BMW i3 range extender engine, Audi put a 245cc Wankel engine to generate electricity. Very similar to the current Nissan e-power cars. = In Feb of this year, Auto Express said: "Audi ready to expand its e-tron portfolio with a new all-electric supermini model, which will sit on the VW Group’s MEB platform. Audi is planning a huge expansion of its e-tron electric range over the next five years – and now a senior official at the firm has admitted to Auto Express that this wider range will stretch to a small car based on the VW Group’s entry-level EV platform. Known as MEB Entry, the architecture was revealed at the VW Group annual conference last spring. It’s designed to support vehicles of around four metres in length, about the same as a Polo or an Audi A1." But that was due to be 2022. MAZDA MX-30 WITH ROTARY ENGINE OFFICIALLY UNDER CONSIDERATION "The Mazda MX-30 electric crossover will be available in Europe in 2021, and it will possibly get a rotary engine as a range extender, according to a new announcement from the automaker." reports Motor1: "The version of the MX-30 coming at launch has an electric motor making 143 horsepower (106 kilowatts) and uses a relatively small 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery. This setup offers an estimated range of just 130 miles (209 kilometers). So far, there are no plans to bring the crossover EV to the United States, but it's hard to imagine the vehicle being competitive in the market with such a low range." https://www.motor1.com/news/408413/mazda-mx-30-rotary-engine/ TESLA MODEL 3 = 6TH BEST SELLING CAR IN USA "The Tesla Model 3 isn’t done with the headlines, despite the Model Y’s review-grabbing arrival and the coronavirus pandemic we’re dealing with at the moment. Tesla has climbed the rankings of the top selling cars in the USA and placed the Model 3 on the 6th rung*." reports CleanTechnica: "That’s up from 9th in 2019 as a whole, up from 13th in the 1st quarter of 2019, and up from 7th in the 4th quarter of 2019." Note: This is based on official figures from other automakers but an estimate for the Model 3. Tesla only reports global sales, without splitting them out by country or region, and has also started combining Model 3 and Model Y sales/deliveries. That said, CleanTechnica’s estimates are based on a variety of sources and data points. Camry, Corolla, Civic, Altima, Accord and Tesla Model 3. Pure-EVs reached their highest ever total, with almost 11,700 registered during the month. The previous record was a little over 7,700, also in September 2019. As might be expected with such a large increase on EV units registered, market share for pure-electric models hit a new record too." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8886/record-breaking-march-for-ev-industry/ VW SAYS THE COMBUSTION ENGINE IS FAR FROM DEAD "While some have rushed to announce the demise of the ICE is coming, the peeps from Wolfsburg don’t see it that way. In an interview with Autocar, technical chief Matthias Rabe explained why VW argues the traditional engine “will have a longer future than some people predict.” While synthetic fuels are still far from being massively produced for the automotive industry, he believes it makes sense to invest in e-fuels since EVs still have limitations in terms of range while their batteries are still large and heavy." according to Motor1: "Even though EVs will be the number one priority from now on, investments in combustion engines are still planned to update the vast array of gasoline and diesel powertrain VW sell across its many brands." https://www.motor1.com/news/408134/vw-combustion-engine-not-dead/ WATCH PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S BLOW PAST ITS TOP SPEED ON THE AUTOBAHN [audio] from Automann.tv in the Porsche Taycan Turbo S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0IAgkHpU54 KIA XCEED PHEV GOES ON SALE IN THE UK The addition of Plug-in Hybrid variants to the Kia XCeed marks the next step in Kia Motors’ vehicle electrification strategy. Now on sale in UK showrooms, the Kia XCeed PHEV represents the first time Kia has brought electrified powertrains to the Ceed family. The 8.9kWh battery pack is located alongside the 37-litre fuel tank beneath the rear bench, unlike many other plug-in hybrid vehicles, in which the battery pack takes up valuable cargo space. And a 44.5kW electric motor, The XCeed PHEV ‘3’ model is capable of travelling up to 36.6 miles on zero-emissions electric power, while the ‘First Edtion’ can travel up to 33.5 miles LONG RANGE RWD MODEL 3 OWNERS GET AUTOPILOT "Elon Musk has stated that owners of the now-discontinued Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive configuration will have the opportunity to purchase the company’s basic Autopilot in the future at a discounted price." says Teslarati: "Currently, owners of the Model 3 who purchased their vehicle before April 2019 did not have basic Autopilot included with the car. Owners of early build Model 3s were required to purchase basic Autopilot functions for $3,000. Tesla discontinued the production of the LR RWD Model 3 in June 2019. The LR RWD variant of the Model 3 offered a 325-mile EPA-estimated range rating along with a 4.9-second 0-60 MPH speed, just half a second slower than its sibling, the LR AWD variant. The car was a good option for those who wanted a vehicle that had a lot of range but did not need the all-wheel-drive capability." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-basic-autopilot-model-3-lr-rwd-price/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK If you’re staying at home and not driving, what condition or state of charge are you leaving your EV parked up in? Ford is one of the largest automakers in the world and is famous for its brands such as the Ford F-Series, Mustang, and many others. It is the largest family owned business in the world and makes cars, trucks, and other vehicles. Below are some notes from my analysis: Current share price in October 2018: around $9.20 per share Total shares outstanding as of 2Q 2018: 3,998,000,000 shares So total market cap right now is about $38 billion Expected earnings in 2018 to be $1.30-$1.50 per share, which is a P/E of 6-7x Cash net of debt (including marketable securities of Ford Motor Corp. but not of the credit business) is $9 billion. This equates to $2.25/share in cash, which is a decent amount. Really though it is a negative cash position of -$115 billion when accounting for all short and long term debt on the balance sheet. This is -$28.00/share in debt. The amount of net cash the company had in 1987, when Peter Lynch wrote about it, was $8.3 billion. So the cash position has gone up and down over time, but is significantly lower now when accounting for all debt. Ford Credit earned $2,300,000,000 in pre-tax profit in 2017. In 2018 it earned $1,286,000,000 in pre-tax profit in the first half of the year. It looks like based on the most recent trends that it will earn around $2 billion for the whole year of 2018 (although sales of cars and trucks tend to slow down a little bit by the end of the year). If we do what Lynch did and analyze Ford Credit as a stand-alone financial company, we apply a 10x multiple to the earnings. So, Ford Credit is worth around $20 billion. Dividing this number by the shares outstanding, we see that the financial business of Ford is worth around $5.00/share. So, let's put this together. Current share prices for the business is around $9.20. The net cash position is worth nothing. The financial business is worth around $5.00. 9.20 - 0 - 5.00 = 4.20. This equates to the car business being available for purchase for $16.8 billion. Comparison point from the past, at the beginning of 1994: Ford had 464 MM shares outstanding (common stock). Only 940 MM in profit for 1993, so $2.02 per share. 1984: $2.9 billion in profit 1985: $2.5 billion in profit 1986: $3.2 billion in profit 1987: $4.6 billion in profit 1989: $5.3 billion in profit 1990: $0.8 billion in profit 1991: ($2.2 billion) loss 1992: ($7.3 billion) loss 1993: $2.5 billion in profit Income from the Financial Services segment steadily grew over time throughout this whole period - Ford increasingly financed a higher percentage of cars, even though the total number of cars sold fluctuated a lot. Share count has hovered at 3.9 billion over the past several years - no change expected but dilution will likely occur if Ford starts to burn a lot of cash Dividend has fluctuated a lot up and down over the past several years - this is the way Ford does things and is likely to continue. A dividend cut is almost certain when the next recession strikes. In 1987 the business made $8.92/share assuming full dilution. That year it traded between $28.50 and $56.37. That is a P/E ratio of between 3 and 6. The P/E is between 6 and 7 right now - so it is no unreasonable for the share price to drop in half from here if profits (and dividends as well) fall. Lesson: Peak Earnings Trap - the raw P/E number tells you the stock is cheap, but that may just mean that the business has reached a high point in the cycle with its earnings. Wait until the earnings have collapsed and are starting to show signs of turning around. This may make the P/E look artificially high, but really it is trading at a discount. Example: Large oil companies can be an example of this. They usually trade around 10x but sometimes look like they are trading at 20x or 30x because oil prices suddenly collapse.
