Lucy shares details about her Boxing Day event, (Dec. 26th, Basic Premise gallery, 918 E. Ojai Avenue), a festive gathering to celebrate creativity, camaraderie, and new beginnings with chocolate-chip miso cookies. She also talks about her open studio practice, inviting locals and visitors alike to drop by her workspace for casual conversations about art, storytelling, and life's everyday adventures. In true Lucy Bellwood fashion, these open office hours offer more than just a glimpse into her artistic process —t hey're a testament to her commitment to fostering connection. How might you care for yourself while caregiving? In this episode, Rachel Mark, Lucy Bellwood and I talk about caregiving. Rachel Mark is a fabrication artist for stop-motion animation and an ADHD/Creative Coach. She took care of her brother, Daniel, who was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy, and her uncle, Lou, when he was diagnosed with MAL syndrome. Lucy Bellwood is a professional Adventure Cartoonist, writer, and educator. She is taking care of her father, who has moderate stage dementia.  This is part two of a two-part episode. The first part is really about letting go — letting go of perfection to be a better caregiver — letting go of expectations of your loved one — and letting go of future expectations. This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Caregiving Journey, hosted by Breathing Wind founder and host, Sarah Davis. The Caregiving Journey miniseries explores:  How stories of other caregivers can help us feel less alone Ambiguous grief and caregiving at end of life The shifting roles of the caregiver How and why to seek self-care Joy in the caregiving journey In this ~48-minute episode, Rachel, Lucy, and Sarah talk about: 2:05 - “This is a list, I wrote it for both of you, I didn't know you at the time. But almost everyone is gonna face this at some point in their life. And so helping friends be prepared for this thing that is something no one ever trained us for is really important to me.” - Rachel 2:32 - How improv can be helpful when caregiving for people with dementia 5:47 - “But really, when you're at the center of this, your energy is so precious, and managing it is super important. It's okay to need a break. It's okay to take care of yourself first sometimes and prioritize your energy.” - Rachel 7:52 - Reflections on Zen Caregiving Project's caregiving class and giving self-love. 9:29 - The only one who won't leave you is yourself 10:17 - Though self-care is important, it's also important to lean on community 10:59 - Rachel's exercise to hold compassion and show up for others 12:22 - Lucy's reflections on her self-sufficiency bias 15:16 - How people show up when you need it the most 16:09 - Lucy's reflections on the community support she's had for caregiving for her dad during the pandemic 18:31 - “One thing that I did want to speak to is that both of you, I think, are only children. And I'm oldest, my younger brother was disabled. So the three of us have grown up in this concept of we are our own best friend, we are our own person, we have to be so self-sufficient. And it is so humbling when people start offering us help that we so desperately need and then crying releases — I didn't know how much I needed that because we didn't have the bandwidth to acknowledge our needs or the ability to ask for it.” - Rachel 20:46 - Learning how to accept help 22:55 - Lucy, on being able to accept help after the pandemic: “I would love to have people come over and play music, I would love to have people come hang out with my dad for an afternoon while we go off and do something else. Like there's recognizing that it is going to get easier. As the reopening happens.” 24:33 - “You are going to have moments where you feel so desperately lonely, like in a way that is to your core, debilitating. And, in those moments, this is where your brain is going to send you signals that it's not okay to reach out. [Saying], ‘it's not okay to talk to your friends. They're sick of hearing you.' Because depression has this voice that is all-consuming. It's hard when you're in it to get that sort of objective viewpoint but with the small voice that's inside, you can just start listing off the people that you love that are in your life that care about you and just start saying their names over and over and over again until that voice can get louder and counteract the one that tells you you're alone, you can't reach out.” - Rachel 27:29 - How Lucy's friends have modeled helping 29:17 - Rachel, on asking for help: “The best thing you can say is, ‘I just need you to be on the other end of the phone. I just need to hear you breathing.' And that's it.” 30:39 - It may feel overwhelming but it passes 34:08 - The desire for perfection in caregiving 35:23 - “Nothing in your life will prepare you for this. There's no course you can take, there's no master's degree that you could get.” - Rachel 37:00 - How Lucy has relied on intuition to help guide her decision on moving back to be a caregiver 40:06 - “No decision is final.” - Rachel 41:36 - Trap of resentment 42:57 - How to help the person you're caring for receive self-care 47:06 - “[Caregiving] is not a means to immortality.” - Rachel To find out more about this episode and subscribe to the newsletter, visit the show notes. How do you let go of making everything perfect when caregiving? In this episode, Rachel Mark, Lucy Bellwood and I had a conversation about caregiving. This is part one of a two-part episode. The first part is really about letting go — letting go of perfection to be a better caregiver — letting go of expectations of your loved one — and letting go of future expectations. The next part, to follow, is all about being held within (the “self-care” episode). This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Caregiving Journey, hosted by Breathing Wind founder and host, Sarah Davis. The Caregiving Journey miniseries explores: How stories of other caregivers can help us feel less alone Ambiguous grief and caregiving at end of life The shifting roles of the caregiver How and why to seek self-care Joy in the caregiving journey In this ~48-minute episode, Rachel, Lucy and Sarah talk about: 03:08: Background on Rachel's virtual accountability / self employed / freelancer coffee shop turned “emotional support animal” version of a coffee shop 08:30: “It's very easy to feel isolated, even when you aren't actually isolated.” 09:17: The relationship changes when caregiving 10:31: Rachel's story of caretaking for her uncle Lou with MAL Syndrome 12:55: Lucy discussing the negotiation process with another caregiver (her mom) and how she has had to let go of perfectionism when it comes to caregiving 18:56: “And I think there's a panic around when we're taking care of someone. And the only thing we can control is how well we're administering the meds on a daily basis and how well we're making sure they're doing their physical therapy. And so we kind of start obsessing and fixating on all of this little minutiae of like he has to get his breakfast exactly at this time.” 19:32: “It's a constant reminder of all the things that we can't control.” 23:28: Rachel discusses the importance of setting boundaries in her life and how it helped with caregiving for her uncle 30:30: Lucy recalling a situation when she noticed her father's decline due to vascular dementia.  31:48: “Grief is 100% the loss of your dreams of a future together and creating new memories.” 34:08: Anticipatory grief 37:18: How Rachel dealt with the coming and going, as well as staying true to herself while caregiving 39:44: Reflections on long-distance caregiving (the “Swooping in” thing) 41:35: How to get yourself out of the mindset of task-orientation to provide better care 44:22: “And so I've been trying to recognize that the things that are good for my dad are not always the things that he enjoys the most. And there are certain things that I think crisscross both directions.” To find out more about this episode and subscribe to the newsletter, visit the show notes. Since then, Bellwood has brought humor, generosity, and an irrepressible lust for life to a wide variety of projects. Her comics are often written and drawn in the field, leading to immersive snapshots of tall ship sailing and cutting-edge ocean science. We’ve all been there--you start out with the promise of a new day, a reasonably curated to-do list, and a commitment to make your art. And suddenly you look at the clock and it’s the end of the day and all you have to show for it is seven or eight little piles of unfinished good intentions. This happens to all of us. Whatever your skill level, it’s super easy to get lost in the various tasks that go into making art. And for good reason--not only is art a series of complex tasks, but we’re often performing the tasks in chunks of time either stolen from other commitments, or in the spaces between emotionally and physically expensive commitments. Lucy Bellwood, adventure cartoonist and artist extraordinaire, has accomplished significant feats for someone still so young, including developing a loyal and devoted fan base. She is currently working on a book project with Kate Milford about a seafaring adventure graphic novel series with kind and cuddly capybaras. We talk about the eternal artistic hustle, about Kant's admonition "to not number voices, but instead weigh them." Lucy talks about the famous blog post from Kevin Kelley's "1,000 True Fans," and how to develop and sustain enough people who will stick with an artist through thick and thin and allow them to achieve artistic freedom. We talk about earlier pre-Patreon and Kickstarter artists, Robert Musil and Harry Partch, who were free to create as they chose through the patronage of a small but dedicated group of fans. Featured in a prior issue of the Ojai Quarterly by Kit Stolz for her "100 Demon Dialogues" book, Bellwood has just signed a contract for 750 pages of drawings over the next six years. An Ojai native, Lucy talks about connectedness and being known through several generations, an experience rarely duplicated outside your hometown, even as she's been in Portland, Oregon for the past decade. Always innovative and forward-thinking, one of Lucy's news projects is the "Right Number," an anonymous confessional phone line where callers can leave messages and know that only one person will hear them. Her experience at Reed College was formative and unusual, prompted by an influential teacher in Ojai, and which has led to her prolific and unusual career path. We conclude with Lucy's perceptive insights into the social unrest in Portland, and how it does not line up with right-wing narratives, because the protests are limited to a small, six-block downtown zone and whatever rare acts of violence happens can be laid at the feet of police overreach. We did not get around to talking about the 1908 Tunguska explosion, Sumerian cuneiform or the Antarctic expeditions of Ernest Shackleton. Well, since that time, not only did she start and fund that project, she's just finishing up yet another Kickstarter project that was also funded, and this time in about 24 hours. Yes, that sound was your jaw hitting the floor. We'll wait for you to pick it up.... Listen in as Adam and Lucy discuss her pride and joy and struggles and fears with not just her current endeavor, the 100 Demon Dialogues, but also with being an artist on an overall level. From self-care to the financial burdens and planning as a freelance and independent artist, all of it is in play. They begin with Z. Akhmatova's Gods Can't Die, a lavishly illustrated fantasy of adventure and self-discovery. This is a relatively young webcomic, beginning in April 2016, so readers can easily jump on board with its prologue and first chapter. It's the story of Ena, born of both human and god, as she searches for her deity father and encounters other gods and creatures along the way. Next, they discuss Kamikaze, a futuristic dystopic tale created by Alan Tupper, Carrie Tupper, and Havana Nguyen. Its teenage protagonist, Markesha Nin, is a lightning-fast courier making deliveries within competing corporate interests and trying to provide for her blind father. The guys can't help but think of CW's The Flash when discussing this series. Finally, Sean and Derek wrap up with Sarah Mirk and Lucy Bellwood's The Secret Life of Gitmo's Women. This already-completed webcomic appears in the online magazine Narratively, and it presents the first-person accounts of two female naval veterans and their experiences at Guantanamo Bay. The conflict in their stories isn't what you might expect, but instead have everything to do with the military's (and our culture's) patriarchal structures.

Images for this episode are at http://www.multiversitycomics.com/podcasts/comics-syllabus-001-wonder-woman-year-one/ (also, please note a correction below- 5/31/2017) This week's Comics Syllabus podcast digs deep into the "Year One" story arc from "Wonder Woman" #2, 4, 6, 10, 12, and 14 by writer Greg Rucka, artist Nicola Scott, colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr., and letterer Jodi Wynne (leaving out an interlude in issue 8 with Bilquis Everly on art). I draw heavily on Carolyn Cocca's Superwomen: Gender, Power, and Representation (Bloomsbury), recently nominated for an Eisner, to consider the heavy "representational weight" that Wonder Woman has historically carried as the iconic female superhero. I think about how the "Year One" creative team deals with (or doesn't deal with) this history and the present in the pages and panels of their new origin story for Wonder Woman. (For a briefer primer on Wonder Woman and cultural history, check out this piece from the Nib by Lucy Bellwood and Sarah Mirk: https://thenib.com/what-does-wonder-woman-actually-represent?t=recent ) Also mentioned in this episode, an editorial from the National Review quoting a commentary piece from the James G. Martin Center throwing shade on the trend of comics in college classrooms: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/447676/comic-books-college-martin-center-article https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2017/05/graphic-novels-trending-english-departments-thats-problem/ and the venerable Comixscholars listserv where great researchers and theorists fan the flames. http://www.english.ufl.edu/comics/scholars/ SPOILER WARNING: In the beginning of the episode, we discuss Wonder Woman and comics in non-spoilery general terms. But after the first break at ( 33:00 ), we start diving into close-readings of the chosen work. So if you don't want to be spoiled on the events and details of this work, please go and read it first, and come back to finish the episode with us and enjoy it with us. Consider it homework, but more fun. You can find archives for this podcast(previously named "Study Comics with Paul") here. Or find the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Soundcloud. You can also follow Paul on Twitter @TwoPlai . Thanks for listening. CORRECTION (5/31/2017): Upon re-listening to the episode, Paul realized that one of his brain farts was an egregious error that needed correction, naming the WW variant cover artist of some controversy as Michael Cho-- an artist whose art and views Paul greatly admires-- when it is actually Frank Cho-- an artist whose art Paul sometimes admires, sometimes not so much. Paul is often unflatteringly mistaken for others, and so deeply regrets the flub, and has re-recorded that snippet for posterity. Also, while shouting out the Comix-Scholars listserv, Paul misspelled "scolars." Great job. The irony ..)

Lucy Bellwood writes seafaring comics. When I saw Lucy speak at XOXO this past September, I was absolutely smitten. Not only has she turned her love of tall ships into two crowdfunded comics, she is also incredibly honest about what it takes to live the life of a creative person. She spoke about finances, dreams, and how having a big year can mean recognition and happiness, but that money still plays into the conversation. It was an incredible speech. I knew I had to have her on the show. Thankfully, Lucy is a great sport and was absolutely game to chat. She shared about what it took to do two Kickstarter campaigns, how she is able to create with the support of Patreon, and she's also an inspiration when it comes to building community around the arts. I could have talked to her all day, but I know episodes over an hour are a little scary to commit to. I know you're not going to want to miss any of this conversation. I give you the delightful Lucy Bellwood... There is not a place we can turn where current events are not effecting our every day lives. I feel incredibly honored to unveil the first episode of comic fuel to feature Ulises Fariñas and Lucy Bellwood as cohosts. Ulises and I jump right into the questions and geek out on what is important to think about when inking - both digital and traditional. We then go into great depth discussing "style" and how it is actually an incidental occurrence in your art as opposed to a measured goal. Lucy hops in during question three to talk about how to think about drawing background art in your panels. Ulises and I cap the entire episode off with a very important discussion regarding how race and equity is reflected in the comic industry. In fact, in writing the show notes for that segment, I was delighted to find several amazing articles that dealt specifically with how the comic industry is connecting to these important topics. This episode also includes some amazing borrow audio clips from Jason Brubaker, Ven. Robina Courtin, and art educator John Spencer. Such an amazing third episode. Easily the hardest I've worked on yet. Hopefully I can keep it up! I feel like I know the basics, so beginner books aren't really teaching me anything new. I'm completely self taught, and would love to learn some subtly with my inks. Maya: How do comic artists deal with improvements in their style while making a comic book? Should a comic artist keep a consistent style? If so, how much should one practice style before starting to make comics? Michael, Poland: What are the elements of style of particular artists if I want to use their style in my own work? I usually think of such elements as: the coloring method used (with computer or water colors), shading, …. but what is it that distinguishes the one from the other? There are general groups of artists (e.g. European, Asian, …) who have similar style - how come they can be grouped - what is the key? Jasmine: How often would you focus on comic backgrounds? Are details like that important? Thanks to this week's cohosts!
