Join your host Garhdo as he takes a special deep dive into one of the most interesting stories in comic history! Nowadays Marvel is the biggest franchise in the world, but in the late 1990s, after years of ownership by a capitalist corporate raider, they declared bankruptcy on the back of the comic book industry crash, something that their own actions a few years before to feed the comic spectator boom had helped to create. This is the story of how Marvel caused the comics crash. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garhdogoesgeek/support

Like us, Brad's a sophisticated nerd with a way with the words. In Brad's latest "weekly dispatch" e-newsletter, Brad dropped some interesting thoughts about the state of the modern comic book industry, and how it tracks against the broader trends in the fragmenting media industry. If you like what you here and want to hear weekly big ideas, cool stories, and what it all means subscribe @ BradBerens.substack.com. And we'll be soon to talk about one nation's descent into fascim. You know, happy stuff.

Comics' harassment crisis isn't just caused by the names you've seen in the comics news. It is enabled by an entire system of employment and fandom built on exploitation. Good thing there are some brilliant and brave people joining me to talk about what we can to do create meaningful change in the industry. Guests: Jay Edidin writes comics, short fiction, and narrative nonfiction; covers culture, arts, science, and gender as a journalist and essayist; edits comics, transmedia, and genre fiction; and is half of the podcast Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men. Jay was named ComicBook .com 2017 Comics Person of the Year for his investigative coverage of harassment issues at D.C. Comics and his work to foster diversity and inclusion in comics culture. Joan Hilty is a comics editor who came up in the 90s queer comics scene as a cartoonist, then had a 15-year editorial run at DC Comics/Vertigo, and now works with many of the Top 10 comics publishers in licensed publishing at Nickelodeon. She’s taught at Maryland Institute College of Art and is currently on the Cartooning faculty at School of Visual Arts. In 2014 she wrote about her experience with harassment in the industry for the Guardian, which was later a part of Jay’s Buzzfeed reporting leading to the ouster of a top editor at DC. Kwanza Osajyefo: Author and creator of BLACK, a comic that asks: what if only black people had superpowers. Kwanza has been a part of the comics for nearly 20 years. Beginning his career as an online producer at Marvel before moving into other media roles. He later returned to comics and launched DC Comics' digital publishing initiatives. We also take a deep dive into the latest thoroughly researched analysis from Comics Beat, as well as report on some other unfortunate events happening in the general comics industry, including but not limited to the exposure of Warren Ellis. Hey everybody, Magnus here. In 1992, Seven Men Disrupted The Comic Book Industry. And it was awesome! I love 1990s-era Image Comics. It's hard to find a comic book publisher that launched with more anticipation, excitement and hype than Image Comics did. I love Image Comics so much, in fact, that beginning in March of 2020 I'm embarking upon a brand new epic mega series. These Seven Men Are Disrupting The Comic Book Industry. I'm taking a fond long back at a handful of early 90s Image titles. What was good? What was bad? What were some missed opportunities? Well, things couldn't have been too horrible because those comics sold millions and millions of copies. So join in on the fun with me and take a fond look back at the comics of yesteryear. The jewel in the crown of the MCM / ReedPOP convention schedule, The MCM London Comic Con - taking over the ExCel Centre in London's Docklands over the weekend of Friday 26th-Sunday 28th October - was truly a breathtaking collection of the world's best media creators, from the world of comics, to manga/anime, to film and television, to role-playing and beyond. It was truly a sight to behold. And An Englishman In San Diego was part of it! Leonard Sultana hosted a number of panels and presentations at the show, both on the Comic Stage, the Centre Stage and also at a couple of satellite panels for invited VIP's - these are those recordings! The CBLDF (Comic Book Legal Defence Fund), represented by Alex Cox at the show, charged MCM to hold a roundtable discussion about the current state of comics coming from the US, taking on board recent arguments and conflicts within both fandoms, readership and creators themselves about diversity and representation, about the stemming of the tide of apparent falling sales and the landscape of comics, especially in regards to what are called the Big Two (Marvel & DC) and beyond. It was a fascinating conversation, in which Leonard was joined by Tara Ferguson, who works within the US and direct market with many creatives, retailers and publishers, and Lauren Klasik, representing one of the most exciting independent publishers on the shelves today, Zenescope Entertainment. Enjoy! Intro Music: 'Punky', bensounds.com
San Diego Comic Con is an economy in itself. This is the US's biggest pop culture convention and it has massive implications not just in nerd friendly TV, Movies and oh yeah, comics -- but also in politics. The Coven gathers to stir up the cauldron of issues surrounding women in the comics industry, especially with the Chelsea Cain situation. It's already obvious that the lion's share of caped crusaders or masked heroes are male - so it's no surprise when we find that there aren't many ladies writing comics. Unfortunately, where we can find examples of women working in comics they're often harassed on Twitter, another thing we've come to expect, and sexually harassed in their own workplace. The comics industry continually proves itself to be a dangerous place for women: they might be threatened with rape online, bitten in their office, or fired because men doing the harassing and biting can't control themselves. Share in our shock and outrage at the current state of women in comics and rejoice in how far we've come in terms of diversity in one of our favorite nerdy medias. But mostly be scared of Bitey the Clown.

In a ‘rewarding’ episode, we talk about how Five Stars is working out for us as a customer rewards program. Is it needed to stay competitive? On the heels of Wizard World Chicago, we reminisce about our earliest con-going experiences (and John Byrne). Armed robbery (not of Challengers, but next to). Secret product drops and the comics industry. Civil War II is late and longer and going to wrap AFTER the new Marvel Now launches, just like Secret Wars and All-New All-Different Marvel. So we DON’T learn from mistakes? Patrick is digging a bunch of Dark Horse titles.
There is not a place we can turn where current events are not effecting our every day lives. I feel incredibly honored to unveil the first episode of comic fuel to feature Ulises Fariñas and Lucy Bellwood as cohosts. Ulises and I jump right into the questions and geek out on what is important to think about when inking - both digital and traditional. We then go into great depth discussing "style" and how it is actually an incidental occurrence in your art as opposed to a measured goal. Lucy hops in during question three to talk about how to think about drawing background art in your panels. Ulises and I cap the entire episode off with a very important discussion regarding how race and equity is reflected in the comic industry. In fact, in writing the show notes for that segment, I was delighted to find several amazing articles that dealt specifically with how the comic industry is connecting to these important topics. This episode also includes some amazing borrow audio clips from Jason Brubaker, Ven. Robina Courtin, and art educator John Spencer. Such an amazing third episode. Easily the hardest I've worked on yet. Hopefully I can keep it up! Maya: How do comic artists deal with improvements in their style while making a comic book? Should a comic artist keep a consistent style? If so, how much should one practice style before starting to make comics? Michael, Poland: What are the elements of style of particular artists if I want to use their style in my own work? I usually think of such elements as: the coloring method used (with computer or water colors), shading, …. but what is it that distinguishes the one from the other? There are general groups of artists (e.g. European, Asian, …) who have similar style - how come they can be grouped - what is the key? Jasmine: How often would you focus on comic backgrounds?
