On this episode of the podcast we speak with Thoreau College alumna Adeline Lyons and her collaborator Gabel Cramer about the diverse activities of the Youth Section of the Anthroposophical Society in North America, including the upcoming Youth Conference to be held August 3-7, 2026 in Fair Oaks California with theme "Courage: From Initiative to Idea to Initiative." We also discuss other conferences and gatherings organized by the Youth Section and Futuring Now, their journal of essays, poetry, and artwork published in hard copy thrice yearly (please subscribe!). We also discuss Gabel and Adeline's life and work at Free Columbia (Phimont, NY) and the Threefold Youth CoLab (Chestnut Ridge, NY), two anthroposophical artistic and life sharing organizations in New York State that have appeared previously on the podcast. Join us for a refreshing conversation with two visionary young people taking the lead on curating spaces for deep conversation and creative work around questions of vocation, meaning, spirituality, and the deep work we are called to do in our time.Adeline Lyons lives and works in the Threefold Community outside of New York City. She is involved as community organizer and event planner, a coworker of the North American Youth Section, editor, writer, and stage artist. She received a degree in Creative Writing from UW-Madison, and is also an alumna of Thoreau College! She keeps a Substack: @writingaworld Gabel Cramer is the director of development at Free Columbia, a community arts initiative that weaves together creativity, artistic practice, accessibility, and education. Along with this, he is an organizing member of the North American Youth Section, helping to run the finances, put on conferences, and collaborate with other passionate young people. He is sometimes a musician, sometimes a potter and sculptor, and often busy cooking, growing plants, and undertaking fun projects. After getting a master's degree in community development and planning, he has found great meaning in his work in the intersection of community, art, youth, education, and spirit, though often wondering how to bring it all into balance in his own life.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you're not alone, and support is available. You might consider reaching out to someone you trust or a support service in your area.IntroductionThis show is unlike our usual. It is a tribute to a well-known and beloved international educator who died by suicide in May, 2024. His name was Allan Bredy. We have included statements about Allan from his family, friends and colleagues. Audrey will be narrating, and has inserted quotes from the celebration of his life as well as some recorded testimonials. Even if you didn't know Allan, we think there will be some impactful take-aways for you -– on how to live fully, to lead with heart and to lift others up using all you've got.Allan was born in New Jersey to Canadian parents and grew up in Germany, France, and Oklahoma. As a younger man, he was a wrestler, shoe salesman, oil rig derrick hand, and farm hand. He met Julie in an Anthropology class; they were engaged in 3 weeks and married in 6 months. They lived in Spokane, Washington, before Allan became principal of Port Angeles High School. In 2000, he and his family moved to Singapore, where he was middle school principal at Singapore American School. He later became director of Lincoln School in Nepal, then of American Cooperative School in Tunisia, and then of American School of Brasília in Brazil. Eventually, Allan and Julie returned to the farm on Lummi Island, Washington. Later, he served as Interim Head at Dar es Salaam American  School in Rabat, Morocco, and as an administrator at The Index School in Washington. He was also an active member of Lummi Island Church and The Gathering Place.Themes: Allan as Coach and Team Builder | Allan's Warrior Code | Allan as Defender and Protector | A Life Fully Lived | Allan's Love of Music and Rituals | Allan's Values: Work, Purpose, and Courage | Family and ComplexityThank you to Gabel, Anton and Julie Bredy for giving us permission to create this tribute to Allan and to use quotes from his Celebration of Life and Facebook Page. In this episode of The Rainmaking Podcast, Scott Love speaks with executive coach and author Luci Gabel about optimal performance for high achievers—and Luci's definition is simple and practical: optimal performance equals energy. She explains that rainmakers and senior professionals aren't just managing tasks; they are managing the internal capacity to think clearly, communicate well, make high-stakes decisions, and stay steady under pressure. Luci introduces a framework of six “pillars” of energy that combine the physical and mental sides of performance: nutrition, movement, rest/sleep, mindset, communication, and vision. Her point is that you cannot separate physiology from leadership—small shifts in hydration, rest, movement, or self-talk can immediately improve focus, mood, decision quality, and resilience. Luci also emphasizes that most professionals don't pay attention to energy until they're already depleted; the first step is simply noticing what drains you and what elevates you throughout the day. Rather than overwhelming people with a complete lifestyle overhaul, she advocates high-leverage, minimal viable changes—one small adjustment practiced consistently for a week or two (like increasing water intake, taking a 10-minute walk, or turning screens off an hour earlier). She recommends turning the six pillars into a simple monthly self-audit: draw a “wheel,” rate yourself from 1–10 on each pillar, identify the lowest score, and focus on one small improvement there. Over time, this creates compounding gains in energy and clarity. Luci closes by pointing listeners to her coaching and group programs built on these pillars, along with her podcast, Leadership Life, Health and Happiness, for continued strategies on sustainable performance. Showing the political importance of play in postwar French literature In postwar France, authors approached writing ludically, placing rules and conditions on language and on the context of composition itself. They eliminated "e's" and feminized texts; they traveled according to strict rules and invented outright silly public personas. The Politics of Play: Oulipo and the Legacy of French Literary Ludics (2025, Northwestern University Press) is a comprehensive examination of how and why French authors turned to these ludic methods to grapple with their political moment. These writers were responding to a range of historical upheavals, from the rise and fall of French feminist and Third-Worldist groups to the aftermath of international socialism both at home, in the former Parisian Belt and in France more broadly, and abroad, in post-Yugoslavia Balkan states and elsewhere. Juxtaposing an array of case studies and drawing on cross-disciplinary methodologies, Aubrey Gabel reads three generations of the formalist literary group Oulipo, including Raymond Queneau, Georges Perec, and Jacques Jouet, alongside writers not traditionally deemed ludic--or sometimes not even conventionally known as novelists--such as the lesbian activist-writer Monique Wittig and the editor François Maspero. Gabel argues that literary ludics serve as both an authorial strategy and a political form: playful methods allow writers not only to represent history in code but also to intervene creatively--as political actors--in the fraught social fields of postwar France. Author Aubrey Gabel is Assistant Professor of French at Columbia University, as well as an affiliate with the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender (ISSG) and the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society (ICLS), and currently a fellow with the Institute for Ideas & Imagination. She has also published a number of articles and chapters in edited volumes on literary play and constraints, but also on bande dessinée and other comic genres. Host Gina Stamm is Associate Professor of French at The University of Alabama, with research  concentrated on the environmental humanities and speculative literatures of the 20th and 21st centuries, from Surrealism to contemporary science fiction and feminist utopias, in Metropolitan France and the francophone Caribbean, with a book manuscript in progress on posthumanist ecological engagement in the surrealist movement. Sarah and Ginny invite listeners to rethink modern scripts about career, timing, and what truly satisfies. Alex is a great communicator, Roman is a bit of an inventor, and Kali is an intuitive empath. It's summertime, and an adventure is triggered when they find themselves in the middle of a protest outside the local library by people who want to ban certain books. During the protest, people are focused on what they believe to be their Constitutional rights, causing the three teenagers to realize how little they know about the Constitution. In their search for answers, they discover a book with magical properties, which becomes a catalyst in helping them discover what the Constitution is really all about. Join the teenagers as this mysterious book enables them to travel through time and space—bringing to life historical figures like Ben Franklin, Wyatt Earp, Alice Paul, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and many more. Each of these historical figures will teach them about the original Constitution and its amendments. Through the eyes of these three teenagers, you'll be able to explore what it was like when the original Constitution was signed. You'll even travel to other countries, like Russia, where you'll meet Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in a field within the Gulag where he was imprisoned. Peghead Nation co-founder Dan Gabel joins us this week to talk about the online lesson portal's origin story, the growth they've experienced over the last decade, and some of their favorite online classes.  The Peghead Nation roster contains many former Fretboard Journal subjects and familiar faces to anyone who loves our podcast. In 2022, they even won a Distinguished Achievement Award from IBMA, the International Bluegrass Music Association.  This week, Peghead Nation is launching a live Flatpicking Old-Time Fiddle Tunes class with guitar virtuoso (and co-founder) Scott Nygaard. https://www.pegheadnation.com This week's show is sponsored by: Stringjoy Strings: https://stringjoy.com (Use the code FRETBOARD to save 10% off your first order) Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar: https://mmguitarbar.com Peghead Nation: https://www.pegheadnation.com (Get your first month free or $20 off any annual subscription with the promo code FRETBOARD at checkout). https://fretboardsummit.org/ https://www.fretboardjournal.com
