After years of putting together mockups and designs, and after years of going from concept to code, we have finally removed the Beta label off our site and have launched this massive rewrite as our primary website for SermonAudio! A solid foundation has been laid for the future. The new SermonAudio website is much more than a fresh coat of paint. It takes loads of technology to make it all work—a fresh new design language, a rewritten client-side framework, a corresponding server-side framework, a rewritten API layer, the database, and plenty of caching to keep things running smooth. The entire architecture for the new site is foundationally different from the existing website. It was necessary to do so in order to get off of legacy back-end systems and embrace the newer development tools that today's developers are using. We have been hard at work building out the physical infrastructure needed to guarantee the protection of our expanding library of almost 3 million sermons. However, The Vault is much more than just 3 petabytes of raw storage. It's an active computing cluster of 2,500 CPU cores and 8TB of high-speed RAM which allows us to have the horsepower needed to run the new resource-hungry website and scale as traffic increases into the future.**Launch Day Announcement:**https://www.sermonaudio.com/news/launch**The Vault Site:**https://www.sermonaudio.com/vault

In fact, the trendy stocks dominate now more than ever. The seven megacap stocks — Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA), Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon.com (AMZN), Meta (META) and Tesla (TSLA) — account for 29.7% of the S&P 500 as of April 17, says Datatrek Research. That's up from the group's 27.9% weight in the S&P 500 in 2023. Seeing the group's hold over the world's most popular index grow this year might surprise you. Shares of Tesla are down 37.4%. Microsoft Azure for example is the leading direction in the company's cloud services. But, things are more complicated ·         Windows OS - from Windows 95 till 10th version is only 15 years. And in May 2021 with the 21H1 update rumors are saying that the next thing that will happen in Autumn 2021 is the release of Windows 11. It was and continues to be one of the largest sources of revenue for Microsoft.  ·         Microsoft Teams - An alternative to Slack, some would say, but Microsoft is putting more than just a comfortable chat for users. It is designed to become a digital environment for companies and employees of any company in the world.  ·         Xbox - the gaming industry is growing, and Microsoft couldn't stay apart from this topic. Sony needed competition and Xbox is the best possible alternative to it at the moment ·         LinkedIn - Since 2016 when Microsoft acquired LinkedIn, the professional social network continued to grow and became a unique and indispensable tool for HR professionals all over the world.  ·         Minecraft - as if Xbox was not enough, Microsoft dive into the gaming industry even more with Minecraft.  So, there is a good portfolio for Microsoft which in its turn provides a series of exclusive services, or competitive Microsoft Azure is a top cloud service provider competing with Google Cloud and AWS from Amazon.   Revenue of Microsoft broken down by segment 2012-2023 Published by  Lionel Sujay Vailshery,  Mar 27, 2024  In its 2023 financial year, Microsoft generated 69 billion U.S. dollars from its productivity and business processes segment and a further 88 billion through its intelligent cloud segment. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Stuff I buy and use: a listicle to boost your consumer surplus and productivity, published by Aaron Bergman on June 1, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Note: this post was originally written for my blog, which may be why some parts might not appear to have been written for the Forum. I may publish a more anecdote-rich, freewheeling version there soon, in which case I'll make this a linkpost. Thanks to Martin Glusker for his detailed, very helpful thoughts and feedback. Intro This post is my attempted contribution to the blogosphere's “things I recommend you buy and use” micro-genre. To give due credit to my intellectual forefathers: Sam Bowman's archetypal founding text, published in 2017, has since catalyzed iterations by Rob Wiblin, Michelle Hutchinson, Megan McArdle, Arden Koehler, Arden again, Julia Wise, James Aung, Rosie Campbell, Michelle Hutchinson, David Megans-Nicholas, Ben Schifman, Yuriy Akopov, Yuriy again, Sam himself again, and surely many others too in the five years since. Those articles are generally cogent, succinct, easy to read, and well-organized. This one is not. While writing, some of my “recommendations” metastasized into needlessly elaborate product reviews or gratuitously heterodox hot takes. It's also a bit heavier on the dietary supplements than is typical. So, without further ado, sit back and enjoy this hypertrophied smorgasbord of “product recommendations.” Part 1: Non-consumables 2021 MacBook Pro (An accidental mini-review) 14" model starts at $1,999. 16" model (which I have) starts at $2,499. Good condition used versions go for $100-$500 below retail on eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace. After experiencing some buyer's remorse with the smaller 14" screen, I up selling this laptop and buying a used 16" version, each for ~$500 below retail. You can also spend up to 1 Trillion USD $6,599 for all the bells and whistles. I know, an expensive device purchased by around 0.3% of all humans on Earth in 2021 isn't really what the “stuff you should buy” micro-genre is all about. Well that's too bad, because I really like this computer and three of its features in particular: 1) Bright screen This is the feature I care about and appreciate most. Apparently some people are perfectly satisfied with dimmer screens. If that were me, I probably wouldn't have gotten this computer. All 2021 MacBook Pros reach 500 nits (brightness/surface area) for everything, and 1,000 or more for some content. For reference: Older Mac laptops max out at 400 nits (brightness/surface area), and I regularly wished my 2017 Air would get brighter. Most inexpensive (and some pricier) monitors reach 250. Most name-brand but less expensive models do even worse, like this HP at 220. New Dell laptops (e.g. this one for $1,449) can reach 500, but at this point you're not saving a huge amount of money compared to Apple. Honestly, I'm not sure why Apple doesn't make a bigger deal out of this; it's arguably the only feature that matters every second you're using the device and the new line of MacBooks are significantly brighter than almost every other make and model. To self-plagiarize some Tweets from a few months back: And ~95% of the time I keep the screen on full blast, churning electrons into a delightfully vociferous stream of electrons. 2) A ~luxurious~ amount of storage For an additional $2,400, you can get a Pro with 8TB of storage, enough to contain God Himself hold many large files and applications. But you can probably save your money for the other items on this list, because the base 512GB capacity is really quite a lot. For reference, this was my storage summary after importing every file accumulated throughout high school and college and adding a bunch more: 3) Good battery life In short, it's nice to be be able to carry the thing around more or less al...

Music Production Made Simple

In this podcast episode of Music Production Made Simple, I discuss hard drives with you for your music production computer. There's two main hard drives we use for our music production computers.. That is Mechanical Hard Drives (HDD), and Solid State Hard Drives (SDD). There are also what's called a "hybrid hard drive" where there's a small amount of SSD built into a Hard Drive to help it run a little faster by "caching" common files for faster loading. Mechanical Hard Drives A mechanical hard drive is more affordable, and is able to be purchased with LOTS of storage space. You simply provide a power cable from your computer's power supply (PSU), and a SATA cable plugs into the HDD and motherboard for the data connections. As I said in this episode, I liked the 5400RPM hard drive, as the noise was not audible in my acoustic computer case to help keep things quiet.. the 7200RPM can be hard audibly. Solid State Hard Drives: At the time of making my music production computer build video, 250GB was like $200-300!!! Now you can get 1TB-2TB for that same price.. (about 5-6 years later..) SSDs are awesome because they are QUIET and FAST. The only problem at the moment is you can't buy them in LARGER sizes like 4TB or 8TB (maybe in the old card-type SSDs).. but they are still pricey. Conclusion.. Hard Drives for Music Producers So I hope the gives you insight to buying hard drives as a music producer. Currently we use an SSD for our main C: drive which is where we install our operating system (Windows for example), and our most important programs and files like FL Studio, Drum Kits, and our main VSTs. For our LARGER files (like my FL Studio courses), we store these on a HDD (Hard Drive) because it's more affordable. Hopefully in the coming years we will be able to just use one hard drive again, but this time on a fast SSD that is affordable, with a reasonable capacity to keep up with all our digital assets nowadays.. By the way, you can checkout my FL Studio Books if you'd like to become a better producer! =========================== GET THIS EPISODE'S RESOURCES: https://itsgratuitous.com/podcast/s2e23-different-hard-drive-types/ ===========================

This week it's all about CES 2022! So much to talk about including Sony getting into the electric vehicle market. We read your emails as well. Samsung Neo QLED - The powerful evolution of Samsung Neo QLED is built on Quantum Matrix Technology. It precisely controls Samsung's exclusive new Quantum Mini LED to express blacks, whites, and every shade in between, more accurately than ever. Enjoy great detail in dark and bright areas. Micro LED - MICRO LED is an inorganic, self-emitting LED designed to change the world of displays. Creating light and color on its own, MICRO LED delivers true-to-life color and contrast with optimum brightness in every scene. Discover stunning details on our biggest screen that surpass your greatest expectations. When you want more than one view, MICRO LED allows for four split-screen views. See up to four screens at once from a variety of sources — including the four HDMI ports — each giving you an immersive experience. The Frame - A minimalist-inspired design makes The Frame blend flawlessly with your interior. A slimmer profile, wider range of hues, and monochromatic back provide a sophisticated appearance from every angle. Connect the One Invisible Connection cable to discover what makes The Frame a modern masterpiece — on or off.³ The Premiere - Ultra-bright, high-resolution images are projected with cutting-edge Triple Laser Technology. The Premiere LSP9T uses a triple laser light source for dramatic home cinema viewing that nearly replicates a theater experience.⁸ Get precise color accuracy and incredible contrast with the Premiere LSP9T 4K Smart Triple Laser Projector.⁹ The Premiere LSP9T is the world's first HDR10+ certified projector for realistic, vibrant viewing. $3500 for 120” $6500 for 130” Eco Remote - combines a built-in solar panel with new wireless charging technology that uses radio waves emitted by Wi-Fi routers. It works by “collecting routers' radio waves and converting them to energy,” Samsung explains. And because it doesn't require any special Wi-Fi technology, it's compatible with almost every router in use today. The Freestyle - is a projector, smart speaker and ambient lighting device all rolled into one lightweight, portable device weighing only 830 grams (1.8 lbs). The Freestyle comes with full auto keystone and auto leveling features that allow the device to automatically adjust its screen to any surface at any angle, providing a perfectly proportional image every time. SmartThings Cooking -  A new service from Samsung SmartThings is designed to make your culinary journey seamless. An automatic Meal Planner powered by Whisk's Food AI recommends meals for the whole week, makes shopping lists with the ingredients you need, and connects to grocery retailers for one-stop shopping straight from the Family Hub™ refrigerator or your mobile screen. Recipe instructions can be sent directly to synced Samsung cooking devices to minimize hassles and mistakes. Samsung Health Smart Trainer on Samsung 2021 TVs: Samsung Health seamlessly transforms the home into a personal gym, and the new Smart Trainer4 feature tracks and analyzes posture in real-time, just like a personal trainer. During and post-workout, Smart Trainer provides feedback on form, helps you count your reps, and estimates calories burned. With video and interactive training via Bixby-enabled voice control, Samsung Health Smart Trainer elevates and personalizes the home workout experience. JetBot 90 AI+: Coming to the US 1H 2021, this new vacuum cleaner uses object recognition technology to identify and classify objects to decide the best cleaning path. LiDAR and 3D sensors allow JetBot 90 AI+ to avoid cables and small objects, while still cleaning hard-to-reach corners in your home. Also outfitted with a camera, JetBot90 AI+ is integrated with the SmartThings app to assist you with home monitoring. Samsung Bot™ Care is designed to use AI to recognize and respond to your behavior. It will be able to act as both a robotic assistant and companion, helping to take care of the details in your life. It will also learn your schedule and habits and send you reminders to help guide you throughout your busy day. Samsung Bot™ Handy: Also in development, Samsung Bot™ Handy will rely on advanced AI to recognize and pick up objects of varying sizes, shapes and weights, becoming an extension of you and helping you with work around the house. Sengled The Smart Health Monitoring Light bulb claims to read heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs through entirely non-invasive sensors. It uses a radar sensor instead of a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, meaning it can read through materials and detect more subtleties. Ideally, the higher sensitivity would allow for the light bulbs to detect different people, see movement through textiles and other complexities of off-skin health tracking. According to Sengled, a collection of Smart Health Monitoring Light bulbs connect via Bluetooth mesh to create a virtual map in your home, relying on several points of “view” for complete health tracking. To be clear, the light bulb doesn't have a camera or anything built in. It can't see or record you, just sense you. Kohler can now run you a bath with just a voice command PerfectFill - PerfectFill consists of a drain kit and digital valve that work together to draw the bath to your preferred temperature and depth. PerfectFill starts at $2,700; that doesn't include a Kohler spout and compatible Kohler bath. It also needs to be professionally installed. PerfectFill will be available to order in 2022. Kholer's Stillness Bath, which was teased at CES last year, will be available to purchase in 2022. It starts at $8,000 and incorporates that PerfectFill tech in a smart bathtub that combines water, light, fog, and aroma to create an “at home spa-like experience” Robern IQ Digital Lock Box — a smart lock box that fits in a bathroom vanity cabinet for storing medication and personal items. $450 Touchless Residential Bathroom Faucets starting at $199 Purist Suspend can be operated by the puck-shaped remote to turn the faucet on and off and adjust the temperature. The main concept here — beyond being quite the statement piece — is reducing counter clutter. With Suspend, your kitchen faucet will no longer be in the way when you're washing dishes (was it really ever?). The faucet hangs from the ceiling and has 180 degree rotation. LG LG OLED EVO Gallery Addition - The next evolution of Self-Lit Pixels brings a new definition of brightness. The latest LG OLED TV features the all-new Brightness Booster powered by an advanced processor making the display 30% brighter than before. This cutting-edge technology revolutionizes picture quality, producing deeper shades of black and brighter highlights to reveal incredible levels of detail and color. LG UltraGear Gaming Setup - This setup consists of a super fast IPS monitor with ATW Polarizer technology that supports high-fidelity color for reproducing vivid scenes. The monitor is compatible with next generation game consoles. Also included in the setup is the The LG UltraGear™ Gaming PC 17G90Q and the LG UltraGear speakers to elevate your gaming experience and deliver detailed, lifelike sounds. LG's smart TVs all run WebOS - now renamed WebOS 22 (for the year). The platform is getting a few updates, including the ability to add user profiles. Users will login and get their own mix of content—but not TV display settings. QNED Mini LED - LG is also updating its 4K QNED line for 2022.  They all feature updated Quantum Dot technology in which the Nano Cell is now an emissive layer. The crux of quantum dot is the clarifying of the light from Blue LED to running some through the Quantum Dots to run them green and then a Nano Cell layer that emits red light. LG claims a 90%+ DCI-P3 wide color gamut reproduction compared to the 70% coverage on traditional LED-LCD TVs. The use of Mini LEDs gives the displays more discrete control of black levels and dampen haloing. Their 8K displays have 2,400 local dimming zones. LG's Magic Motion Remote has also seen some improvements, thanks to a reduction in redundant buttons and a smaller overall profile.  LG Dolby Atmos Soundbars - LG has also implemented some notable improvements to is Dolby Atmos soundbars. In addition to a new dipole-style wireless surround speaker available in the company's flagship soundbar, LG is adding an up-firing speaker to the center channel to increase clarity, presence, and intelligibility for moments when voices can frequently get buried by otherwise explosive soundtracks for action sequences. Instaview Refrigerator - Simply knock twice to illuminate LG's largest, edge-to-edge InstaView™. See favorites in an instant without ever opening the door. Bring one of the hottest trends home with the Craft Ice™ maker that automatically makes batches of three or six slow-melting Craft Ice™ per day. The UVnano™ dispenser automatically removes up to 99.99% of bacteria on the nozzle after 24 hours.* Eve Systems' CES focus is on HomeKit, Matter, and Thread The Eve Outdoor Cam - The floodlight/security camera combo is expected to be available April 5 for $250. It's 1080p outdoor security camera with a 157-degree field of view and infrared night vision with an LED floodlight. Eve MotionBlinds will also support the Matter standard. Cisco Silicon One: The Back Story

Cisco's single-chip ASIC-based architecture dubbed Silicon One breaks so many well-established precepts, it can help to approach some of the biggest ones first. In fact, once you can accept that a single silicon design, can work well for both routing and switching, other breakthrough claims become easier to swallow as the hyperbole begins to make sense.Distinctions between routing and switching often feel superfluous to the casual observer. Hardware differences are justified by the unique role or place in the network. A network, by definition, requires coordination between elements built from different architecture. Network operators dedicate many resources to refining the orchestration these elements require to squeeze maximum results as they optimize both speed and efficiency. Operators have had to spend a lot of time testing features across the network as a result. Silicon One offers the first single silicon architecture serving different market segments and different functions in its bid to sharply cut operator OpEx.Now, I prefer my marketing promises as more of an amuse-bouche. Did you know that MS Word will open pdf files and try to convert them into an editable form which can be saved as a pdf or docx? The MS Office Android app has this capability as well. Also, if the pdf is on your Google drive then it can be opened with Google Docs. Though it's not as good as MS Word, you can extract the text within the file and edit to your heart's content. ------------------- Ian Barton on Unraid and Antec P101S Mid Tower Case I have upgraded disk capacity a couple of times, which means I have several spare "smaller" drives of 2TB and 4TB. My current setup uses RAID1, which means I need two drives that are mirrored to avoid loss of data if one of them dies. Unraid uses a completely different system. There is one parity drive, which stores information that allows a crashed disk to be restored. You can then add as many other disks as you want, providing that each disk isn't larger than the parity disk. So if your largest drive is 8TB your parity drive needs to be at least 8TB. Unraid isn't free, but you can have a 30 day free trial. Cost is $59 for up to 6 attached disks. There is also support for docker containers and virtual machines. I have had a couple of Antec cases in the past. Unfortunately, they are so ancient they won't fit newer motherboards. Antec cases are well built and have several features e.g. rubber grommets to reduce noise from hard drives. However, the main region I want this case: you can install up to 11 storage drives! Reasons for this are explained in the next post about Unraid. Hardline on the hardware: Microsoft introduces a faster Surface Go 3, Wi-Fi-only Pro X, and more... Especially if you’re judge-judy-slapping-your-watch-waiting-dot-gif for those new Apple Silicon Macs, some models of which might take up to 2 years to get here. And if you need to do real desktop-class work right now, big screen, big silicon, big Bootcamp or Windows VM especially, and yeah, big budget if you take that iMac to just… iMax, how well will last of the Intel and AMD iMacs do for you?Well, I’ve got Mary Spender of YouTube, Nebula, and music fame with me right here, we’re going to tell you all about it, and we’re going to do it right now!

Kyle and Gilbert recap the Quarantine Conference and drop some productivity bombshells, brought to you by Zoombridge Instatwittica, GmbH.Show NotesWut up, fam? Shoutout to Tom for is great work on the Quarantine Conference episodes. Gilbert is back at the console and every um is a dagger, every clip a very Catholic whip. Smash that bell, bitches. The RICE method. How to burn your clothing for safety.Pour one out for Adam Schlesinger. An excellent, Fleishman-esque summary Zoom's foibles. Please don't shut up, Glenn.Davis Vantage Vue and Pro 2, plus WeatherLink.ATP and Upgrade on Dark Sky.With things like AirTags and Dark Sky is Apple about to start a more significant push for using all our phones for better (but hopefully more secure) info a la Tile and Waze?PostLab supports Premiere now.LumaForge on local and remote (via PostLab) collaboration in Final Cut.Wait, WTF is PostLab?Apple, with magically impeccable timing, endorses PostLab for the purpose of collaboration in Final Cut workflows. Turns out that's a thing. If only it were native. Shame.Hedge acquires PostLab. And after we recorded, MergeX was also added to the system. How Adobe does remote collaboration.Turns out Adobe had cut Team subscriptions down to the level of the base All Access sub (30% less), so there was no cost difference at all. Smart move. Deal no longer active.Descript really does do some cool stuff for audio collaboration. Too bad it's so weird.Although even with just 4GB or 6GB of RAM in 2018-2020 iPads Pro, LumaFusion is still doing some cool things. Final Cut for iPadOS should still be a thing.Furthest Avid bin close request? No.Nobody knows what Main Stage is.How multitrack compositions work in Descript. If (1) you're not a musician, (2) you just want a next-level DAW for recording and editing podcasts, (3) you'd like to pay once out of pocket, and (4) you're feeling a bit masochistic, Logic currently has a 90-day free trial. Normally it's only 30 days. Same with Final Cut.Education discount for Apple Pro apps.Ringr and Zencastr do some interesting stuff, but can be scary given how the guest uploads work (don't close the browser!).Also, remember, the "Z" and C" are silent.Cut the FLAC.Buuuuut, Zoom offers native recording and individual remote tracks unlike Call Recorder. Ugh.Rogue Amoeba is so fucking awesome. Buy all their things, especially if you're on a Windows PC.Fission needs to be a bigger part of the audio editing discussion. For now, check out the Smart Split feature. We might've put a picture of Logic's Strip Silence view in our chapter art. Probably not though. Is the subscription model fading for freelancers? Here's one hot take!Steve on Flash. So good. Will he really leave?Putting a Photos library on a NAS is a pain in the SaaS.Extremely fast local collaboration with Gilbert's NAS.The QNAP TVS-672XT and all its special things.Seagate Iron Wolf Pro HDDs. Gilbert has six of these at 10TB each in RAID5. Total usable capacity ~50TB, less the NAS's OS and stupid drive rounding. The awesome Samsung EVO 970 Plus M.2 NVME SSDs. Gilbert has two at 1TB each in RAID0, but read only. Total cache capacity is ~1.8TB after rounding, etc. He is not using any additional over-provisioning for these excellent drives. With their native over-provisioning they're rated at 350GB/day for a decade. Plus, no risk of data loss via failed cache given read-only. If they were set up as read/write he'd use RAID1, limiting the total cache to ~950GB.MikroTik's Latvian SFP+ hotness. What JBOD actually means. What Gilbert is planning to use to backup the NAS.QNAP Snapshots. Here's a Jellyfish solution that does less in a much more user-friendly way for a mere $21,000.The sparse image trick also works for helping prevent application memory overflows (I'm looking at you, Adobe and Avid) if you have the apps installed there instead of on the local drive. Not generally recommended.

This week we feature outspoken commentator and podcaster Kirk McElhearn, In this segment, Kirk starts the discussion by talking about his use of 8TB drives for backup, as Gene examines the lower prices for SSD, which cost several times that of traditional hard drives. Both are concerned that Apple still charges $1,400 for a 2TB SSD upgrade for the Mad mini. With the recent announcement from Apple CEO Tim Cook that the company would miss its earnings guidance, the possible reasons are discussed. In addition to the sales falloff in China, and the fact that people hang onto their devices longer, should Apple consider offering lower priced models to compete better? What about the iPhone SE, which met the needs of people who want small handsets at a relatively affordable price. Apple has run closeout sales on the SE, but only briefly. You'll also hear an encore presentation of a segment with commentator Josh Centers, Managing Editor for TidBITS, and author of "Take Control of Apple TV" and other titles, who covers Apple's expected TV programming, and how it might be presented. What about the new rumors of an updated TV app that will showcase the programs free and present other streaming services for in-app purchases? Does the world need yet another streaming service? What about Google's decision to cancel Plus next year, which is yet another service the search giant has canceled over the years. Did it ever stand a chance against Facebook? What about Facebook's own security problems, and will that ultimately lead to another social network eventually catching fire and taking over the market? Consider that young people these days are mainly focusing on YouTube, which is owned by Google.

We feature outspoken columnist and podcaster Kirk McElhearn, also known as Macworld's "iTunes Guy." Kirk discusses his recent purchase of an 8TB backup drive to accommodate his large music library. After a brief discussion of the recent Wikipedia leaks of alleged CIA efforts to hack tech gear, including smartphones and cars, Kirk makes yet another criticism of what he regards as the failure of Apple to address the needs of professional users. He explains his ongoing skepticism about Apple CEO Tim Cook's promises this customer base. The discussion moves to Apple's opposition to the right-to-repair bill being debated in Nebraska, which would require that parts and repair manuals be made available to non-authorized dealers. You'll also hear from commentator Bryan Chaffin, co-founder and co-publisher of The Mac Observer. Bryan is also outspoken about his concerns about Apple's commitment to the needs of professional users, that the Mac Pro was first launched in mid-2013 and has yet to be updated, yet sells for the same price. He remarks about the fact that Apple only released a small number of new products for 2016, and wonders what might come in 2017. He goes on about his skepticism of Cook's reassurances about Apple's commitment to pro users. There's also a spirited debate about Apples opposition to a right-to-repair bill, and whether the company should be forced to sell parts and manuals to third-party unauthorized repair shops. Gene maintains that customers should have the right to repair their gear where they want without risking the loss of Apple's new product warranty.

This week on BSDNow, we will be talking shop with Josh Paetzel of FreeNAS fame, hearing about his best do's and do-nots of using ZFS in production. Also, a quick iX Systems Mission Complete (https://www.ixsystems.com/missioncomplete/) Submit your story of how you accomplished a mission with FreeBSD, FreeNAS, or iXsystems hardware, and you could win monthly prizes, and have your story featured in the FreeBSD Journal! *** FreeNAS Logo Design Contest (https://www.ixsystems.com/freenas-logo-contest/) Rules and Requirements (https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/freenas-logo-design-contest.39968/) For those of you curious about Kris' new lighting here are the links to what he is using. Aside from his issue with tap-to-click on the touchpad, his PC-BSD experience has been pretty good. (Larry, if you hear this, jump on #pcbsd on FreeNode and we will lend a hand) He mentions that this really isn't his first time running BSD, apparently back in ye-olden days he got NetBSD up and running on a PowerBook G3, until an update brought that experience to abrupt ending. He gives a shout-out to the FreeBSD Foundation as being a great go-to source for wrapup on the previous year in FreeBSD land, while also mentioning the great 4.4 release of DragonFly, and some of the variants, such as RetroBSD and LiteBSD He leaves us with a tease for 2016 that work is ongoing on Twitter to port over Mopidy, a python based extensible music server *** A look forward at BSD events throughout 2016 (http://www.bsdevents.org/scheduler/) After a quick look back at 2015, now its time to start planning your 2016 schedule. The BSDEvents site has a calendar of all the upcoming conferences / shows where BSD will have a presence this year. There are quite a few items on the agenda, including non BSD specific conferences, such as SCALE / Fosdem and more. Take a look and see, you may be able to find something close your location where you can come hang out with other BSD developers. (or better yet), if a linux conference is coming to your town, think about submitting a BSD talk! Additionally, if getting BSD Certification is something on your 2016 resolutions, you can often take the test at one of these shows, avoiding the need to travel to a testing center. *** The 'Hidden' Cost of Using ZFS for Your Home NAS (http://louwrentius.com/the-hidden-cost-of-using-zfs-for-your-home-nas.html) An article was recently posted that seems to be trying to dissuade people from using ZFS for their home NAS It points out what experienced users already know, but many newcomers are not strictly aware of: Expanding a ZFS pool is not always as straightforward as you think it should be ZFS was designed to be expanded, and it handled this very well However, a ZFS pool is made up of VDEVs, and it is these VDEVs that provide the redundancy. RAID-Z VDEVs cannot be changed once they are created. You can replace each disk individually, and the VDEV will grow to its new larger size, but you cannot add additional disks to a RAID-Z VDEV At this point, your option is to add an additional VDEV, although best practises dictate that the new VDEV should use an equal number of disks, to avoid uneven performance So, if you started with a 6 disk RAID-Z2, having to add 6 more disks to grow the pool does seem excessive For the best flexibility, use mirrors. If you had used 6 disks as 3 mirrors of 2 disks each, you could then just add 2 more disks at a time. The downside is that using 2TB disks, you'd only have 6TB of usable space, versus the 8TB you would get from those disks in a RAID-Z2 This is the trade-off, mirrors give you better performance and flexibility, but less space efficiency It is important to note that the diagrams in this article make it appear as if all parity information is stored on specific drives. In ZFS parity is spread across all drives. Often times, the data written to the drive is not of a size that can evenly be split across all drives, so the data actually ends up looking like this (http://blog.delphix.com/matt/files/2014/06/RAIDZ.png) The errors as I see it in the original article are: It notes that the hidden cost of ZFS is that if you add a second RAID-Z VDEV, you will have a whole second set of parity drives. While this is a cost, it is the cost of making sure your data is safe. If you had an array with more than 12 drives, it is likely that you would to be able to withstand the failure of the larger number of drives The article does not consider the resilver time. If you did create a configuration with a very wide RAID-Z stripe, the failure of a disk would leave the pool degraded for a much longer time, leaving your pool at risk for that longer period. The article does not consider performance. Two RAID-Z2 VDEVs of 6 disks each will give much better performance than a single VDEV of 10 or 12 disks, especially when it comes to IOPS. *** ZFS Boot Enviroments now availble in the FreeBSD bootloader (https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=293001) It's been in phabricator for a while (and PC-BSD), but the support for Boot-Environments has now landed upstream in -CURRENT This work was helped by cross-project collaboration when an IllumOS Developer, Toomas Soome, started porting the FreeBSD loader to IllumOS to replace GRUB there This gives Beastie menu the ability to look at the ZFS disk, and dynamically list boot-environments that it finds. (Much nicer than GRUB, which required a pre-written configuration file) This work was extended further, when Toomas Soome also ported the Beastie Menu to the UEFI loader (https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=293233) which is now enabled by default for UEFI (https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=293234) All of these changes are scheduled to be merged back in time for FreeBSD 10.3 as well. There is also a patch being worked on to support booting from ZFS in UEFI (https://reviews.freebsd.org/D4515) This is exciting times for doing neat things with ZFS on root, these plus Allans forthcoming GELI support (https://reviews.freebsd.org/D4593) will negate the necessity for GRUB on PC-BSD for example (Kris is very happy) *** Interview - Josh Paetzel - email@email (mailto:email@email) / @bsdunix4ever (https://twitter.com/bsdunix4ever) ZFS Support *** News Roundup RetroBSD being tested on ESP32 (http://retrobsd.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37470) More hardware news for RetroBSD and LiteBSD I don't know much about this hardware, but there is a lot of discussion in the forum threads about it Not sure what you are supposed to accomplish with only 400kb of ram LITEBSD Brings 4.4BSD to PIC32 (https://hackaday.com/2016/01/04/litebsd-brings-4-4bsd-to-pic32/) It is interesting to see these super-small boards with only 512kb of memory, but will crypto offload support It is also interesting to see talk of 140mbps WiFi, can the processor actually handle that much traffic? BSD Unix-like OS is Resurrected for Embedded IoT Market (http://thevarguy.com/open-source-application-software-companies/bsd-unix-os-resurrected-embedded-iot-market) Related to the above stories, we also have an article about BSD making a resurgence on various Internet of things devices, which mentions both RetroBSD and LiteBSD The article mentions that this is an exciting development for embedded vars who now have an alternative licensed open-source OS to potentially use *** HardenedBSD's new Binary Updater (https://hardenedbsd.org/article/shawn-webb/2015-12-31/introducing-hardenedbsds-new-binary-updater) It looks like there is now another way to update your FreeBSD(hardened) system The post by Shawn Web, details how the new updater will work in future releases of HBSD Right now it looks fairly straight-forward, creating both the base.txz and kernel.txz, along with some data for etcupdate It includes a nice option for the kernel name in the update, allowing different kernels to be installed / updated at will Everything is cryptographically signed and verified using the base system openssl The build system is fairly simple, only requiring “sh/git/openssl” to create the binary updates Planned features also include updating of jails, and ZFS boot-environments *** Sometimes, processors need (BSD) love too (http://functionallyparanoid.com/2016/01/02/sometimes-processors-need-love-too/) We have a blog post from Brian Everly, talking about his long journey into legacy processors and the plans for the future to work on better supporting them on OpenBSD ports He begins with the story of his UNIX journey to today, and why this fostered his love for many of these old (and not so old) architectures, such as Sparc64, PPC32, i386. This journey ended up with the purchase of some legacy hardware (ebay is your friend), and the creation of a database listing the major port blockers on each platform This is the great kind of thing folks can do to step up and help a project, even as a weekend hobby it's great to run some hardware and help test / fix up issues that other developers maybe don't interact with as much anymore. *** Beastie Bits The standard MWL disclaimer (http://blather.michaelwlucas.com/archives/2510) PC-BSD 11.0-CURRENTJAN2016 Available (http://lists.pcbsd.org/pipermail/testing/2016-January/010350.html) NetBSD pkgsrc-2015Q3 statistics (http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-pkg/2015/12/28/msg016193.html) NetBSD pkgsrc-2015Q4 released (http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-pkg/2016/01/01/msg016213.html) First Reproducible builds conference in Athens (http://blog.netbsd.org/tnf/entry/reproducible_builds_conference_in_athens) The creator of the original ThinkPad design passes away (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/01/06/thinkpad_designer_obituary) Feedback/Questions Andrew - High Contrast (http://slexy.org/view/s213iCKLwn) John - FreeNAS followup (http://slexy.org/view/s21ClGePLP) Giorgio - Custom Install (http://slexy.org/view/s21527pkO1) Don - ZFS Slowdowns (http://slexy.org/view/s2jOlCsjkU) Fred - Dual Boot PC-BSD/Linux (http://slexy.org/view/s21uaB0FDU) ***
