YUH 150 is Mick The Digital Doctor and "Ian Hunter On Track". When our guest saw that Sonicbond publishing had the legendary Ian Hunter of Motte the Hoople covered in a book about that important British band from the early 70's, he was moved to approach them with a project covering Hunter's work since leaving the band in 1974. After all, some of the artist's greatest songs have come in the almost 40 years since "All The Young Dudes" broke through. Songs like "Once Bitten Twice Shy", "Cleveland Rocks" and "The Golden Age of Rock and Roll'". In 2023, Hunter brought together a collection of some of the greatest rockers of the last 60 years to release "Defiance Part 1", a 10 track record that serves as a testament to Ian's powers as a vocalist and prominant stature in the history of rock and roll. If it wasn't for this album and it's lead single of the same name, the underground band Mott the Hoople probably would've faded into obscurity forever. But an up and coming singer/songwriter named David Bowie saw the potential in this glam band and their silly name and produced their album designed to turn them into superstars. And it worked! For a bit, and then the lead single is the only song people know of these guys. And now we're taking a retrospective look at this album. Let's sea dive into Mott the Hoople's "All The Young Dudes"!

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Steve Miller. Steve is a veteran journalist and a reporter at RealClearInvestigations. He's also the author of Detroit Rock City: The Uncensored History of Rock 'n' Roll in America's Loudest City. Steve's Music Pick: Mott The HoopleDo you remember the Saturday gigs? We do, we do! Mott The Hoople are known outside of specialist rock audiences these days either as "one of those weird bands from That Weird Era with one of those memorably weird names" or as a putative 'one-hit wonder' performing a song most people associate with David Bowie. So that's where you're wrong, kiddo. Mott The Hoople was a band that managed to set Britain (and particularly London) afire during the early Seventies, even as they consistently eluded chart success. They were brought together by famed rock & roll madman/record-jobber/A&R man/heavy drinker Guy Stevens, who realized his dream of creating a band that sounded like both The Rolling Stones AND Bob Dylan simultaneously by pairing a chubby Dylanesque vocalist/pianist (Ian Hunter, hiding his insecurity behind enormous shades) with a workaday gigging band that hailed from within spitting distance of the Welsh border (the Doc Thomas Group, with Mick Ralphs).  From that fusion came Mott The Hoople, and their 1969 self-titled debut album. The pure rock & roll energy -- gruff, with zero pretensions, utterly available to the fans and the audience, yet strangely literate and aspirational as well -- was there from day one. The only question was whether Mott could ever properly harness it in the studio. The gang argues that they actually did quite a good job during their pre-Bowie years (especially on Brain Capers, an album of such loopily memorable hard-rock ferocity that it must be heard to be believed), but the record-buying public certainly didn't agree.Which is where David Bowie stepped in, rushing to save the band after they'd announced their own dissolution in the UK music press. His song "All The Young Dudes" became their most famous number, and yet on this episode everyone is at pains to argue that neither the song nor its namesake album are the real highlight of Mott's career. So let us explain to you how a band you've more or less never heard of recorded one of the greatest albums of the entire decade after their involvement with David Bowie as we sing you the ballad of Mott The Hoople. And if it seems we've lost just a little bit on the journey, then please treat us kindly.

Hi Folks!  We are listening to David Bowie's 1972 album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars'.  A concept album/rock opera/glam rock/proto-punk masterpiece.  This album has a little bit of everything and tells the story of space alien Ziggy Stardust and his quest to save planet Earth from an apocalyptic event only to get side tracked by his ego and fail.  That sounds like a lot for an album whose run time is only 38 minutes but its all in there. We discuss why this album is still relevant, how the ego can be problematic and how a song called 'Rock and Roll Suicide' can be hopeful.  Thanks for listening!Intro/Outro Music:Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5011-upbeat-foreverLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

I’m Danny Lane, the curator of The Music Museum. This exhibit is called Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. During the late 60s and early 70s, “Psychedelic Music” was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. There are events you don’t want to remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. Our goal with Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. *****Join the conversation on Facebook at----- https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 or by email at***** dannymemorylane@gmail.com *****For your service and your sacrifice, this is Vietnam War: The Music.
