In March 1989, twenty-one-year-old University of Texas student Mark Kilroy and some friends traveled south of the border to Matamoros, Mexico to celebrate the end of spring break, along with thousands of other American students that year. After drinking all night at a bar on the night of March 10, Kilroy got separated from his friends when they decided to call it a night a little after 2:00 am. No one would see Mark Kilroy alive again. As one of several towns bordering the United States, Matamoros was popular with American tourists; however, by the late 1980s, it was beginning to develop a reputation for drug-related crime. In fact, Mark Kilroy was just one of sixty people who went missing in Matamoros in just the first three months of 1989 alone. When Kilroy's friends reported him missing to the Brownsville, Texas police a massive search began, with investigators fearing Mark might have been kidnapped by one of the local gangs. It turned out, the truth was far worse than anyone had feared. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Buy Tickets to MORBID LIVE at Radio City Music Hall on June 27th!
On 14 March 1989, University of Texas at Austin student Mark Kilroy was kidnapped in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, while vacationing during spring break. He was taken by his abductors to a ranch where he was tortured and sodomized for hours before being murdered in a human sacrifice ritual. Kilroy was killed with a machete blow and then had his brain removed and boiled in a pot. His killers then inserted a wire through his backbone, chopped off his legs, and buried him at the ranch along with 14 other people who had been killed there before him. Adolfo Constanzo, the leader of the cult, told his followers that human sacrifice granted them immunity from law enforcement for their drug smuggling operations. The killing drew worldwide media attention and initiated an international police manhunt because of the unusual circumstances of the crime. After the bodies were discovered on 11 April 1989, Constanzo fled to Mexico City but was eventually tracked down. As the police surrounded his apartment complex, Constanzo died after ordering one of the cult members to kill him with a machine gun. Sara Aldrete, another high-ranking member of the cult, was arrested at the scene along with several others. In 1993, the cult members were found guilty of a number of charges, including capital murder and drug trafficking. Several of them, however, claimed they were not guilty of Kilroy's murder and told the press they were tortured to confess. Only two suspects remain at large.ContentsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
In March 1989, 21 year old pre-med student Mark Kilroy disappeared during a spring break trip to Matamoros, Mexico after being separated from his friends for just a few minutes. But what initially operated as a standard missing person case quickly escalated into an international investigation involving U.S. and Mexican authorities. As the search intensified, it led to the discovery of a place called Rancho Santa Elena, which was a remote property tied to drug trafficking and ritual practices. It was a place where at least 15 bodies would eventually be recovered, all of which were victims of ritual sacrafice. What started as one disappearance ultimately exposed a pattern of violence that extended far beyond Mark, revealing a case far more disturbing than anyone had expected. Our other podcast: "FEARFUL" - https://open.spotify.com/show/56ajNkLiPoIat1V2KI9n5c?si=OyM38rdsSSyyzKAFUJpSywMERCH:https://www.redbubble.com/people/wickedandgrim/shop?asc=uPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/wickedandgrim?fan_landing=trueYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@wickedlifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wickedandgrim/ Instagram:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wickedandgrim/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/wickedandgrimWebsite: https://www.wickedandgrim.com/
Episode 412: In March 1989, 21-year-old University of Texas pre-med student Mark Kilroy travelled to South Padre Island with friends for spring break. One night, they crossed the international bridge from Brownsville, Texas, into Matamoros, Mexico, for drinks and a night out. In the early hours of March 13, as the group headed back toward the United States, Mark was briefly left standing alone near the roadside. When his friends turned back moments later, he had vanished. At first, they assumed they had simply become separated in the crowds, but Mark never returned. His disappearance triggered an urgent search on both sides of the border that would soon uncover something far more disturbing than anyone imagined, a discovery that exposed a hidden world of violence and horror behind one young man's spring break trip. Mark Kilroy was a bright, athletic college student - a pre-med major with a promising future. Blowing off steam on a spring break getaway to the sun-drenched border town of Matamoros, Mexico. But somewhere between the neon-lit bars and crowded streets, Mark vanished without a trace. At first, it looked like another spring break gone wrong - just a kid who wandered off. But what investigators would uncover over the next few weeks was darker, stranger, and more terrifying than anyone could have imagined. Buried in the desert was a secret ranch… A bloodstained altar… And the remains of a human sacrifice performed by a cult that believed death could make them invisible to law enforcement. This isn't just a story of murder. It's a story of black magic, cartel power, and how one young man's disappearance unraveled a ritualistic killing spree that shocked the world. The Narco-Satánicos were a notorious criminal cult based in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, that became infamous in the late 1980s for combining drug trafficking with ritualistic killings. The group was led by Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo, a Cuban-American who called himself a "palo mayombe" priest—a religion with African-Cuban roots that he distorted into violent, occult practices. Key Facts:1. LeadershipAdolfo Constanzo was the leader and spiritual figurehead. He gained followers among drug traffickers and law enforcement, who believed his rituals brought protection and power.Sara Aldrete, a college student, became his second-in-command and was dubbed the "High Priestess."2. Beliefs and PracticesThe group practiced a twisted version of Palo Mayombe, involving animal and human sacrifices.Constanzo believed blood rituals would protect their drug operations and make them invisible to police.Victims were sometimes tortured and mutilated as part of these rituals.3. Criminal ActivitiesThe cult was heavily involved in drug trafficking, especially smuggling marijuana across the U.S.–Mexico border. They operated on a ranch called "Rancho Santa Elena" near Matamoros, which became the site of gruesome discoveries.4. The Murder of Mark KilroyTheir activities came to light after the 1989 abduction and murder of Mark Kilroy, a University of Texas student on spring break.Kilroy was kidnapped, tortured, and killed as a human sacrifice. The high-profile case led U.S. and Mexican authorities to investigate the cult.5. Collapse and AftermathPolice raided Rancho Santa Elena and discovered numerous mutilated bodies buried on the property.Constanzo died in a shootout with police in Mexico City in May 1989—reportedly after ordering one of his followers to kill him rather than be captured.Several cult members, including Sara Aldrete, were captured and received lengthy prison sentences.Cultural ImpactThe case shocked both Mexico and the U.S., blending true crime with horror elements. It inspired books, documentaries, and films due to its disturbing mix of drug crime and ritualistic occultism.Note: I was very limited on what I was able to ask Sara, due to her being under contract for a documentary at the time.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unforbidden-truth--4724561/support.

In March of 1989 promising pre-med student Mark Kilroy and his friends went to Matamoros, Mexico during spring break for a few days of fun. What was supposed to be a nice break from studying turned into an unforgettable tragedy. While out in Mexico, after a fun night of dancing, Mark Kilroy vanished. It would take a month for his family and law enforcement to find out what happened to him. Mark Kilroy was one of over 20 victims that crossed paths with a Narco-Satanist cult in Matamoros, Mexico. The cult was operating a drug smuggling business in a Ranch called Rancho Santa Helena. The cult would "sacrifice" humans and animals in order for "spirits" to grant them protection from law enforcement. The Gray (@thegray.art) Learn more about your ad choices. Warning: This episode is graphic. Listener discretion is advised. It is a rite of passage for many American college students, and that is Spring Break. It's a time when students can cut loose, drink too much, and make plenty of bad decisions. Whether Palm Springs or Palm Beach, kids flock to the surf, sun, and sand to have a week full of fun. As parents, we know our children are getting older, and we would probably prefer them not to go, but we have to trust them and know they will be ok but…what if the darkness that lurks out there is more evil than we could ever comprehend and it is just waiting for the right moment to strike. On Wednesday, March 15, 1989, in Brownsville, Texas, two young men came into the station to talk to Chief Investigator George Gavito. The two men tell the investigator their good friend is missing as they explain that they are visiting South Padre Island for spring break. When investigators finally learn what happened to Mark Kilroy, it is indeed the stuff of nightmares. Nowhere will you find more opportunities for disaster, than on spring break. A place with beautiful warm weather, water, and copious amounts of alcohol that attracts thousands of young adults every year. Spring break destinations have disproportionately high rates of human trafficking , DUI deaths, and incidents of alcohol poisoning, rape and illicit drug use. They can be very dangerous especially if your guard is always down. In the United States, these trips are projected as a right of passage when your passage is not yet complete. Holly and Leslie both have stories to offer on this topic, so we thought a story swap would be the best way to approach it. This week Leslie tells us about the disappearance and tragic murder of 21 year old Mark Kilroy. In March of 1989 University of Texas at Austin student Mark Kilroy disappeared in Matamoros, Mexico while on Spring Break in South Padre Island with 3 of his childhood friends. On April 11, his body was discovered along with 14 other victims on a ranch in Santa Elena, Mexico. Investigators discovered that he was the victim of a drug cult that practiced human sacrifice. It was supposed to be a fun spring break trip - in 1989, Mark Kilroy and his friends from college went to South Padre Island, Texas, to party and have fun. During a short trip across the border into Mexico one night, Mark got separated from his friends - and was never seen alive again. His family and friends suffered an excruciating 4-week search for Mark, until his body was found on a Mexican ranch - along with evidence of a cult that practiced human sacrifice.
Amongst many tangents, Mallory takes us on a journey to Matamoros, Mexico - a popular spring break spot for college students across the US. While popular, Matamoros was quickly becoming known for its increasing amount of missing person cases. For context, our story takes place in the spring of 1989 and 60 people were documented missing in the first 3 months of that year alone. An investigation was launched in March of 1989 when Mark Kilroy, an American student, goes missing. The investigation leads officers to a ranch where a group of cultists were stationed. The media gave the group the name the Narcosatanists. What was discovered on that ranch in Matamoros sets off a chain of events that leaves police horrified and many dead.

A mysterious young woman taking college courses in South Texas befriends a charismatic Cuban American. The two of them work their way into a drug gang in Mexico. In the aftermath of finding the bodies on a ranch, investigators seek the couple. They are focusing on Aldolfo Constanzo, the Cuban American who they believe is the cult's leader. He keeps slipping out of their grasp. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/darkness-podcast/support
The bodies unearthed at a Mexican ranch and the people who buried them lead investigators to believe there's something deeply sinister going on. While tabloids publish screaming headlines feeding into the “satanic panic” and the border communities fear who has been living alongside them, Mark Kilroy's family offers forgiveness. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/darkness-podcast/support
Across the border from Matamoros, community members and law enforcement join Mark Kilroy's friends and family in a desperate search. The friends go on the popular TV crime show, “America's Most Wanted,'' and Mark's father pleads on TV for anyone to come forward with information. Police set up road checkpoints, and a car blows right through it. The driver thinks he has powers that make him invisible to law enforcement. Police follow him to a ranch in Mexico … ending the search. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/darkness-podcast/support
A group of friends takes a break from the rigors of college by hitting the beaches of South Padre Island during spring break. Just a short ride and a bridge crossing away, the Matamoros, Mexico nightclubs beckon the partying students with cheap alcohol and nonstop dancing. The friends get separated amid a swarm of students. They can't find Mark, their buddy who goes to the University of Texas. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/darkness-podcast/support
In March 1989, University of Texas student Mark Kilroy had everything going for him. He was preparing to take the MCAT exams and apply to medical school. He'd just turned 21. He was ready to finally take some time off from school and celebrate with his friends at America's biggest Spring Break party spot…South Padre Island, Texas. In far south Texas, it wasn't uncommon for students to cross the border into Mexico to continue the party. But after a night of partying in Matamoros, Mark Kilroy never came home. His family searched for him for a month until they learned of Mark's grisly end at the hands of a cult led by the handsome and charismatic Adolfo Constanzo, or “El Padrino.” In season three of “Darkness” from The Drag Audio Production House, which brought you “The Orange Tree” and “Darkness: Austin Bomber,” hear the story of how Mark Kilroy's family maintained their faith while searching for their son, and the tale of “Los Narcosatánicos,” the drug gang behind his death. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/darkness-podcast/support
