In episode 25, Johnny talks to music A&R man Martyn James. Martyn works for Universal Music in London and is one of the lucky few who gets to dig into the vaults of bands and solo artists to find things to put out on reissues and box sets. He was also part of the team that put together the Oasis documentary Supersonic back in 2016, directed by Mat Whitecross. Johnny's talk with Martyn covers Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and Hans Zimmer, they talk about how you can get into the music business through teaching pilates, and they discuss having to lie for a whole year about seeing Terminator 2 as an 11-year-old when you really went to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze. This conversation was recorded online in mid-March 2024. Thanks to James Van As who wrote and performed the brilliant music (check out James' Loco Looper game) and to Willow Van As who designed the amazing artwork and provided general podcast support. Happy birthday, Mr. Bond. Yes, this October sees 007 turn 0060 with the 60th anniversary of Dr No, the film that brought Ian Fleming's James Bond to the big screen for the first time. The celebrations begin this weekend with a series of Bond At 60 events at the BFI Southbank and BFI Imax, then a The Sound Of Bond concert at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday October 4, headlined by Dame Shirley Bassey, and the debut of Mat Whitecross' documentary, The Sound Of Bond, on Prime Video on October 5. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are the producers who have overseen not one, but two, key reboots of the character, through the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras, firmly keeping alive the traditions established by their father, Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli. They've been around since the franchise began — Michael cameoed briefly in Goldfinger in 1964, while a very young Barbara toured the world with her father as the movies became a cultural phenomenon in the Sixties — and in this special interview with Empire's Chris Hewitt, the two talk about their relationship with Bond, the movies and actors, through the decades, culminating in the major decision they made with the most recent movie, No Time To Die. Enjoy.
Mat Whitecross tells me about re-capturing 80s America and putting capitalism and pugilism in the ring for his new Discovery doc series The Kings, with Hagler and Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran; director Phil Barantini explains how, why and where he made his amazing one-take restaurant movie Boiling Point with Stephen Graham; I review of Licorice Pizza and A Hero.Music by Lee Rosevere. T.J. and Marquis also discuss more details on the upcoming massive Heavyweight Title bout in July between WBC champ, Tyson Fury and former champ, Deontay Wilder. It’s Episode 108! Mat Whitecross and Eran Creevy return this time for Matt’s choice The Other Side of the Wind the last film directed, co-written, co-produced and co-edited by Orson Wells, released in in 2018 by Netflix after more than 40 years in development. To say The Other Side of the Wind is experimental is an understatement - shot in 1970 it was meant to be Wells’ big comeback but continued into the 1980s and was caught up in various legal and financial troubles and languished in film purgatory, despite some attempts after his death, until Netflix gave it a new lease of life. The plot is a film-within-a-film narrative, following the last day of a Hollywood director (assume based on Wells) as he hosts a screening of his last film (assume this film) and the film footage screened is his satire on avant-garde European and Hollywood cinema of 1970s. How you feel about this film very much depends of your relationship with Wells and his work and history, it is ultimately a filmmakers film, and there is very little more than that, other than a period piece for the decline of classic Hollywood and the arrival of auteurs. Scores [supsystic-tables id=113] Definitely, a companion piece to the documentary They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead and The Other Side of the Wind scores mixed reviews from guests and Flixwatcher. Overall scoring 3.3, helped along by some solid fives from Matt. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Other Side of the Wind? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! It’s Episode 103 and Flixwatcher are joined by British filmmakers Eran Creevy and Mat Whitecross to review the 2019 Netflix produced Triple Frontier. Triple Frontier boasts an all star cast of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal, direction from J. C Chandor with the story by Mark Boal. They are a group of Special Operations soldiers who reunite for a heist to steal a lot of money from a South American drug lord. The first half of the film is the classic get the gang back together and the second half is the fallout from them stealing more money than they expected to steal. Which is the films major downfall, the motivation for the heist is they think they deserve to steal this money that isn’t theirs and the chain of events are triggered by their bigger greed of stealing more than originally planned to take. If you can buy this as a major plot point then you’ll probably enjoy this film. Scores [supsystic-tables id=108]Triple Frontier has all the elements that should make a great heist film but fails to deliver, it lacks the tension and surprise that is required to make this anything more than a standard action flick. Given the talent involved it is a massive disappointment. Overall Triple Frontier scores just 2.78. What do you guys think? Have you seen Triple Frontier? What did you think? It’s always a pleasure to welcome a directorial debutant to Soundtracking – what with their entirely fresh take on the art of source music and score. Not that Andy Serkis is a novice when it comes to cinema. As an actor, he played Gollum in Lord Of The Rings and Caesar in the Planet Of The Apes franchise, with roles in the new Star Wars and Black Panther to come soon. He also brilliantly captured the essence of troubled troubadour Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock N Roll, which was directed by our good friend Mat Whitecross. Indeed it’s thanks to Mat you’ll get to hear Andy’s version of My Old Man from the film – after his editor Marc dug out a copy for us. Andy’s first major foray behind the camera is Breathe. Starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, Breathe tells the story of Robin Cavendish, who was given three months to live after being paralysed from the neck down by polio at the age of 28. He became a pioneering advocate for the disabled and travelled the world with his wife, Diana Blacker, in the hope of transforming the lives of others like him. Since Robin's son Jonathan is Andy's partner at their production and motion capture company, Imaginarium, he had a deeply personal connection to the narrative. This extended to the music, which was composed by his friend, Nitin Sawhney. Now while this is Andy's first job in charge of an actual feature film, he previously directed the cutaway scenes for video game, Heavenly Sword. And who did he get to score that? None other than Nitin, of course ...

As subject matter goes, it doesn't get much more rock and roll than Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays, Ian Dury, The Stone Roses, Coldplay and Oasis. But, in one way or another, all these artists have featured in the work of British director Mat Whitecross. As we'll discover, Mat got his big break from Michael Winterbottom while working as a runner on the set 24 Hour Party People, which tells the story of Tony Wilson and Factory Records. The pair went on to direct Road To Gauntanomo together, before he flew solo on the Ian Dury biopic Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll and Stone Roses-inspired comedy, Spike Island. Coldplay are among his illustrious list of music video clients, while he's also worked with composer Ilan Eshkeri and Tim Wheeler of Ash on more than one project. Indeed, Ilan and Tim have very kindly supplied us with some of their favourite compositions for their film and TV work with Mat, which you'll hear throughout the show. And as if you needed more, there are excerpts from Rael Jones' score for Mat's Oasis documentary Supersonic too, amid the more familiar fare served up by the band themselves.
