Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:The Montreal Canadiens have lost another preseason game, dropping a 5-1 contest to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. Scott takes a look at where things went wrong, and despite the bad score line, why the Canadiens didn't actually play all that badly.Following that it's time for a little prospect discussion as Scott compares the preseason efforts of Justin Barron and Arber Xhekaj. While it was assumed Barron would be a lock to make the Habs, his play has suffered a little bit, while Xhekaj has seized much of the opportunity being afforded to him. Is starting in Laval going to be the best course for Barron, while Xhekaj might be a surprise to make the NHL roster. Finally, the rumors are out and about again and Scott has some thoughts on them. First is the Penguins apparently calling all 31 other NHL teams and saying former first round pick Pierre-Olivier Joseph is available if teams want him. Can the Habs find space for the 23 year old, or is it better to let their current prospect core fight for that spot? The Canucks are also trying to offload Michael Ferland's contract to free up future cap space for upcoming extensions. The Edmonton Oilers don’t have a ton of cap space to spend, and they’re not in the market for a d-man, but there are a few enticing UFA forwards out there. Can they entice a strong player, like Patrick Maroon was last year, to sign a one year deal with a cap hit in the range of $2.0 to $2.5 million per year? The opportunity to play with Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl is wide open for the taking. If a forward like Michael Ferland signed in Edmonton and made the most of that opportunity, he could cash in next summer, either with the Oilers or another team. Also, a handful of teams are pressed up against the cap with several strong young players to sign. If the Edmonton Oilers can't find the forward help they need through Plans A or B -- which would be an unrestricted free agent signing or a trade -- they should go to Plan RFA and make an offer sheet to one of the unsigned young forwards.

They include a top six Penguin who otherwise looks fantastic, a sobering season by a Coyotes defenseman that has cut back on taking shots, a Canes blueliner still taking shots but not getting anywhere, a New York top six/niner who has lost his early season sheen, and a couple of Avs forwards whose performances personify the mess in Colorado.Players discussed on this episode include Jonathan Quick, Ben Bishop, Peter Budaj, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Martin Hanzal, Kevin Shattenkirk, John Carlson, Matt Niskanen, Alex Pietrangelo, Colton Parayko, Alex Steen, Mark Streit, Connor Sheary, Chris Kunitz, Sidney Crosby, Patric Hornqvist, Valtteri Filppula, Steve Mason, Drew Stafford, Michal Neuvirth, Ryan Spooner, Frank Vatrano, Alex Burrows, Viktor Stalberg, Roberto Luongo, James Reimer, Thomas Vanek, Kyle Okposo, Evander Kane, Ryan O'Reilly, Jack Eichel, Michael Cammalleri, Travis Zajac, Kyle Palmieri, Taylor Hall, Antoine Roussel, Jason Spezza, Jiri Hudler, Ales Hemsky, Travis Hamonic, Josh Ho-Sang, Nate Prosser, Nick Leddy, Johnny Boychuk, Carey Price, Alex Radulov, Brian Elliott, Michael Ferland, Mark Giordano, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Mike Smith, Louis Domingue, Justin Faulk, Jacob Slavvin, Brett Pesce, Noah Hanifin, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, Mika Zibanejad and more. * * * Download this episode, subscribe, and review us on iTunes! If you enjoy the show, please support future episodes by becoming a patron of Keeping Karlsson.  Keeping Karlsson patrons can join our patron-only Facebook group and take part in (and receive audio from) a monthly live, face-to-face and interactive Keeping Karlsson recording! You can also support us by telling a friend, subscribing to and reviewing Keeping Karlsson on iTunes, and following us on Twitter (@keepingkarlsson). This is it-- the final preseason episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast!! Elan and Brian couldn't be more excited about it, and being closer to 2017-18 faceoff than ever, the guys feel ready to take seriously some of the line combo and deployment situations from the final minutes of exhibition play. They've also got tidbits from their drafts to share about under/overappreciated players, and run down a whole list of bubble guys that may or may not be worth taking a swing on late in a draft or as an early free agent acquisition. For some free bonus content, we livestreamed the Keeping Karlsson Ultimate Patron Fantasy League's Tier 1 Auction Draft! We laughed, we cried, we bid too much on Ben Bishop. Listen here, and see the results here. Also, we're having a Season 5 Launch Party in Toronto on Oct. 14th! Join us by RSVPing here. Oh and one last thing: Take on Elan and Brian in FanDuel's Daily Fantasy contests all season long, running each and every Thursday.  Players discussed on this episode include Jaromir Jagr, Shayne Gostisbehere, Patrick Eaves, Michael Ferland, Ivan Provorov, Robby Fabbri, Alex Steen, Vladimir Sobotka, Brayden Schenn, Dmitri Jaskin, Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto, Ryan Strome, Anders Bjork, Clayton Keller, Alex DeBrincat, Jakub Vrana, Mathieu Perreault, Brendan Gallagher, Sean Couturier, Jason Pominville, Vladislav Namestnikov, Zach Hyman, Scott Hartnell, Jake Guentzel, Timo Meier, Kevin Fiala and more. * * * Like what you hear?
