Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Michele Neff Hernandez, Author, “Different After You:  Rediscovering Yourself and Healing After Grief and Trauma” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Michele Neff Hernandez, is an advocate, teacher, leader and author who exemplifies the meaning of personal growth, transformation and healing following one of life's most tragic and traumatic events: the death of a spouse.   In 2005, when our guest was only 35 years old with 3 children under 15 and 3 step-children in their late teens, her husband Phillip was suddenly killed in a cycling accident, plunging her into the devastating world of grief, despair, loneliness and profound heartbreak.  Over the next year, as she struggled through unknown emotional territory, she conducted in-depth interviews of 30 different widows across America.   That experience led her to create a non-profit organization called Soaring Spirits International, whose mission is to provide a space for widowed people to connect, to foster resilience, and to develop resources for grief recovery and the successful rebuilding of meaningful and satisfying lives.  Soaring Spirits International is the premier peer-based support organization for widows in the world, guiding people from great pain to personal empowerment.   Our guest is also the creator and director of the innovative Camp Widow Program.  She's won numerous awards for her work helping thousands of people navigate widowhood, and in 2021, she was named a CNN Hero.  In addition to being the CEO of Soaring Spirits International and the executive director of Soaring Spirits Canada, she's also the director of the Soaring Spirits Resilience Center located in Kerrville, Texas, whose mission is to research and build resilience in people who are bereaved.    Our guest has also written a compelling and insightful book entitled, “Different After You:  Rediscovering Yourself and Healing After Grief and Trauma”, in which she shares how she took the worst tragedy of her life – the loss of her beloved husband - and developed the coping mechanisms and skills to transform her pain into healing and positive change, and to turn surviving into thriving.  This heartfelt and very helpful book is relevant not only to those who've become widowed, but to anyone who's suffered ANY kind of catastrophic loss due to illness, divorce, an accident, the death of a family member or close friend, and even the loss of a career or a longtime home.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Michele Neff Hernandez, go to:https://micheleneffhernandez.com/ https://www.facebook.com/michele.n.hernandez https://twitter.com/MicheleNeffHer1https://www.instagram.com/micheleneffher/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY_8sMcexydgS5yaX4reKdQhttps://soaringspirits.org/ #MicheleNeffHernandez   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Asking for a Friend

Loss can come in many forms.  It can be a beloved career, a pet, the unfathomable loss of a child, or perhaps a marriage or life partner.  The grief and trauma that can follow such life events can be daunting.  Sometimes awful things happen to us, and we somehow gather up the courage to handle whatever life puts in our way, but how we get there is different for everyone. When you are ready to heal from the grief, the important thing is to recognize that you not only choose growth but embrace the new you that came out on the other side of the trauma.  Michele Neff Hernandez did just that, and she now shares with other widowed people her innovative grief support through Soaring Spirits International, a nonprofit providing research-based programs and a community of peers for anyone who has experienced the death of a spouse or partner. Michele Neff Hernandez is the author of the book Different After You : Rediscovering Yourself and Healing After Grief or Trauma, nonprofit leader, compelling speaker, and a 2021 CNN Hero.  Her story is one of grit, determination, and self-discovery.  Under Michele's leadership, Soaring Spirits has grown from a dream on a napkin to a global nonprofit serving over four million people to date.In this episode Michele and I discuss:Grieving what you lostInventory what you haveDeciding what you want to build nextAllowing yourself to be changed by traumaMichele is currently working on a book on self-love.  The love of self is the first piece to healing.Camp Widow is part of Soaring Spirits International.  There will be a PBS special about Camp Widow in November of 2023.If you would like to request a Newly Widowed packet for you or someone else, it will provide an orientation to all Soaring Spirits' programs.  (Requests for someone  other than yourself, will be sent to the requester.)Soaring Spirits Internationalhttps://soaringspirits.org/Michele Neff Hernandezhttps://micheleneffhernandez.com/Different After You : Rediscovering Yourself and Healing After Grief or Trauma is available at most booksellers.Follow Asking for a Friend on Social media outlets:https://www.instagram.com/askingforafriend_pod/https://www.facebook.com/askforafriendpod/Please provide a review and share. Note from the Host Judy Librach: I want to dedicate this show on grief and loss to one of my dearest friends Donna, who sadly and unexpectedly passed away in December. Donna was truly an angel on this planet with the biggest heart, and she was someone who was so outward-focused and she had such generosity of spirit - she just was a benevolent and blessed being. Losing a friend like Donna really has been brutal, and I wanted to do this show for everyone who is grieving her loss. There are many of them, but my heart goes out mostly to her beautiful family. This week on Finding Your Bliss, we have a show devoted to grief and loss, and how to heal after the death of someone that you love. In this week's episode, Michele of @soaringspiritsintl and a 2021 Top 10 CNN Hero, shares her story about the challenges of blending a family, but then enduring a devastating loss and grieving as a blended family. But because grief is cumulative and cumulatively negative, a previous divorce, followed by the sudden death of her spouse, then the death of her father, taught her so much more about what it means to grieve well. It's hard enough to be a widow and raise your own children, but few talk about the challenges of grieving with the children you raised as your own with a spouse who is no longer living. By the time her father's health was declining and he was put into hospice care, Michele had been around the grief block and was able to support her mother in a way she had never anticipated. And, the loss of her father, starkly different than the recent loss of her spouse before his passing, opened her up to have meaningful conversations at the end of his life that she still treasures today.   Grief has been the catalyst for what was initially going to be a book but later morphed into a movement in what is called Soaring Spirits Camp Widow which takes place in several locations around the United States and now in Australia, too. What is your grief trying to open you up to receiving? Michele allowed her heart to soar in the wake of her devastating losses. Let this episode inspire hope and instill the understanding that grief is what we make of it. We can allow grief to destroy our spirit, or we can allow it to aid us to transform our suffering and soar.  RESOURCES:Soaring Spirits Camp WidowBook, Different after You: Rediscovering Yourself and Healing after Grief and TraumaCONNECT:WebsiteFacebook@soaringspiritsintl / @micheleneffher______NEED HELP?National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. Ep #193 - Embracing Possibility, An Interview with author and speaker Michele Neff Hernandez. In this Empowering Chat I welcome Michele Neff Hernandez for a very timely and amazing conversation. Michele is the author of a new book entitled, Different After You, Rediscovering Yourself and Healing after Grief and Trauma. Michele is a widow. And through her experience of losing a spouse she learned things about herself that she didn't know. This personal trauma led her to write this book and become a motivational speaker on behalf of others who have lost a spouse or a partner. She also developed a non-profit called Soaring Spirits International that provides research-based programs and a community of peers for those that have lost a spouse or partner. Michele speaks to groups of all types about grief, hope and the healing impact of love. Michele's own personal loss of losing her husband in 2005 brought about her most transformative realization about how grief changes us. She was no longer the same person and could not return to being that person. She needed to work through her grief and her loss in order to rebuild her life as a resilient and empowered individual. One that was fully capable of living life fully and even joyfully. Different After You is not just for those that have lost a spouse or partner, it can also help those that are recovering from a life changing experience or trauma.   To learn more about Michele Neff Hernandez: MicheleNeffHernandez.com To purchase Michele's book, Different After You: MicheleNeffHernandez.com/book To learn more about how I show up in the world I invite you to visit my website: SusanBurrell.com

Earlier this week, we shared part one of this conversation, all about how to rediscover yourself after grief and trauma. And let me just say, this profound conversation has stuck with me ever since. So many things that Michele shared so far have come up in my dreams, in my conversations with others, and in my thoughts this week. I hope the same is true for you. Now, if you haven't heard part one, go back and listen to that one first. But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my conversation with author Michele Neff Hernandez as she simplifies how to rediscover yourself after grief and trauma. It's time to simplify… Here's how.  My special guest today is Michele Neff Hernandez and she's simplifying how to rediscover yourself after grief + trauma. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: When a life-altering loss or trauma has happened, so many people just wish things would “go back to normal.” Why this is not a good idea. How to grieve who you used to be before this big change happened without getting stuck holding on to the past. What “integration” is and the role it plays when you've experienced loss and are on the path of rediscovering yourself. Why she recommends thinking of yourself as “a goldfish in a fishbowl” as a way to simplify and filter out what doesn't help on the road to recovery. …and ultimately, what is needed in order to dream a new dream and (as she says) “own your phoenix.” All this month, we've been focused on simplifying different aspects of our body for better understanding on how our body, mind, and spirit are inner-connected. This powerful conversation tackles it from a slightly different angle and I'm so thrilled to share it with you. Take it slow, take deep breaths along the way, and more importantly, talk to someone about this episode.  Just one person to help you remove some of the burden off your shoulders and slowly move forward on your path. We were never meant to tackle life alone. You've got me, heart wide open, running alongside you as well. Just breathe, my friend. Q: Are you ready to rediscover yourself after grief + trauma? If yes, this one is for you. If you've experienced a loss recently, I'm sure you've also felt the effects of grief and trauma as well. Somewhere along the way, you might have lost yourself, too. Let's talk about that. My special guest today is author Michele Neff Hernandez and she's simplifying how to rediscover yourself after grief and trauma. Truth is, with this pandemic, every single one of us on the planet collectively have lost something these last few years. Big or small, that trauma stay stuck in our bodies and it needs time and intentional space to process it as part of the healing process. Here's how. — “Living through a traumatic experience often alters our perspective in a way that makes us better partners, employees, leaders, family members, and ultimately, better people. If you find yourself unable to love the version of you born through trauma, offer yourself tenderness. If you aren't able to release your daily heartache, offer yourself consolation. If you'd rather forget your traumatic experience than relive one moment, offer yourself empathy. If you can't stop yearning to return to the life you used to live, offer yourself patience. If you can't forgive yourself for what you view as failures — real or imagined — offer yourself mercy. If you are so afraid of future heartbreak that you aren't willing to take any risks, offer yourself kindness. Grief expresses itself in different shapes, forms, and times for everybody. Most of the time, widowed people don't know where to ask for help, company, or someone that understands the changes they are going through. Michele Neff Hernandez has developed research-based programs and created a community for individuals experiencing the loss of their partner through Soaring Spirits International. As a widow herself, Michele knows firsthand the grieving process. With the current pandemic going on, she recognizes challenges like isolation for people that have lost their loved ones. That is why Soaring Spirits have both in-person and virtual offerings for its services. We have to normalize grief as another element of human experiences in life. People need a support system, and this is what Soaring Spirits is doing. I had such a great discussion with Michele Neff Hernandez for this episode. Michele is the founder and executive director of Soaring Spirits International, which runs Camp Widow in multiple locations each year, as well as many other programs for widowed people. Soaring Spirits uses the broadest possible definition of “widowed” to include anyone who has lost their life partner. They have a very active blog, a widowed pen pal program, and the terrific new Soaring Spirits Resilience Center that is doing really exciting research. Some topics Michele and I discuss include: Her own journey to becoming widowed when her kids were young; Not knowing any other young widowed people until someone finally connected her with another widow who would become a lifelong friend; How Camp Widow came about on the back of a napkin on a long drive; What to expect if you attend Camp Widow; The opportunity to access Camp Widow Virtual workshops until April 30, 2020; The Resilience Scale available free on the Soaring Spirits Resilience Center web site; What they've learned from studying resilience in widowed people; Their widowed pen pal program and the Widow's Voice blog; Their free packets for newly widowed people; and What Michele's analogy about earthquakes says about how losing a spouse differs from losing a parent. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Michele Neff Hernandez.

Before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and before Dian Fossey left to find mountain gorillas, 23 year old biologist ANNE INNIS DAGG made a solo journey into South Africa.  Being a woman doing this in 1956, she had to overcome many sexist barriers to do her work.  She has sounded the alarm for the giraffes of Africa and the environmental alarm about what is happening to biological diversity on our planet. SECOND SEGMENT – Interviews with TAMMARA BILLIK and MICHELE NEFF HERNANDEZ on the event CAMP WIDOW sponsored by Soaring Spirits.  This organization is committed to helping widows and widowers deal with the loss of a spouse and living beyond that death.   Soaring Spirits has now created a weekend for LGBT widows and widowers to process their grief. THIRD SEGMENT – The 3 major faiths Judaism, Muslim and Christianity have each historically subjected woman to second class status. So what happens when a woman takes charge in each of these faiths to bring about cultural and social evolution? If you have lost a loved one and would like to share with others who are feeling that same sense of loss, this show will share information, tips and resources to find that help.  We all know that when someone says 'I know how you feel', they may seem to know but unless you have had that experience and encountered all the other life challenges that are to follow, you may not really know how I feel.  Companionship, friends, and acquaintances can grow by the people you may meet through this foundation. Take a step, get help, share your life, and start to light your life spark again.  There will be many people there to connect with you and help you hold your light.
