"Hear the voice of the Spirit, to a church waiting for a better day. Do not receive the grace of God in vain, for I heard you. I helped you and I tell you, “now is the time of God's favour, now is the day of salvation. (2Cor 6:2). The Kingdom of God only manifests on this earth, when God’s people operate by the knowledge of what NOW IS, not the knowledge of what MIGHT BE. For the Kingdom of the Son, is the realm of what NOW IS."

Seasons’ Greetings. I’m Colonel Mike Cornell and I am privileged to deliver this month’s Wing Command Team Message to you, the men and women of the 102nd Intelligence Wing. For many of us, December is traditionally a time to reflect on our accomplishments over the past year, and an opportunity to look ahead, and set goals for ourselves in the year to come. But after what has been a tumultuous and unprecedented 12 months, that might seem like an exhausting endeavor. To be sure, no one among us has been unaffected by this pandemic. For some of you, that might include losing someone you love, caring for a sick friend or relative, or recovering from COVID-19 yourself. If you have experienced any of those things then my heart goes out to you, and those in your life infected by this virus. And for all of us, this pandemic has exacted a heavy toll on our resiliency and productivity. As a commander, I know firsthand that many of you juggled your professional and family obligations as your usual support structures collapsed. Maybe you came to work every day worried about your children after their daycare facility or school closed. Maybe you are a young Airmen who saw your college plans derailed as universities suspended classes. Maybe you know someone who lost their job or had to close down a family business as the result of the pandemic’s economic impact. Maybe you are among the thousands of Americans who had to postpone or cancel vacations, weddings, or other important celebrations. Or maybe, like me, you are unable to see an elderly parent or grandparent as often as you’d like because they are at higher risk of infection. And, as if that was not enough of a burden to carry, we all watched with sorrow as our great Nation endured a summer of social unrest and an election year marked by sharp political division. Undoubtedly, each of us has suffered from the stress of these events over the past 12 months, along with the isolation that comes with not being able to socialize with family and friends as much as we’re accustomed to doing. And so it is tempting to avoid looking back over the past year. And looking ahead, most of us can think of nothing more than returning to life as we knew it in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way that each of us works, socializes, and cares for ourselves. But I urge you to resist those temptations. Because as I look back at 2020, I cannot help but marvel at your unwavering commitment to our Air Force Core Values – Integrity, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. Your dedication, and your accomplishments under great adversity, assure me that this Wing will continue to surmount any and all challenges that might lie ahead in 2021 and beyond. Whatever impact this pandemic has had on your personal lives, each of you rose to the occasion in the finest traditions of the National Guard. You met every obstacle head-on, looked out for your fellow Wingmen, accomplished the mission at hand, and showed yourselves to be shining examples of why this Nation always perseveres -- because the things that bind us as Americans are stronger than those things that divide us and, when the country needs us most, its citizens come together. You did just that. You not only took care of yourselves and your families through these stressful times, but you also came together as National Guardsmen to assist your communities, and defend your country. Many of you stood watch in our streets to protect your fellow citizens in the exercise of their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble, while also ensuring that criminal elements did not seize upon those protests to destroy property or inflict harm. A significant number of you kept the pressure on our adversaries through the uninterrupted performance of the Wing’s Title 10 intelligence missions, often providing continuity to our active duty and intelligence community partners, as they adjusted to operations during a global pandemic. Your analyses were briefed to Combatant Commanders, US Ambassadors, the National Security Council, and the White House. Meanwhile, our Cyber Engineering & Installation units ensured critical communications continued to enable global, full-spectrum operations. Dozens of you from across the Wing deployed overseas in support active duty operations worldwide. Separately, other Wing members deployed out of state to provide hurricane relief or to assist the federal government with election security. Closer to home, scores of you stepped up to fight the COVID-19 virus across the Commonwealth, as members of JTF-Minuteman – the largest domestic activation in the history of the Massachusetts National Guard. Citizen-Airmen of the 102nd provided everything from medical care, to the construction of field hospitals, to testing and logistics, and hospital security. Back home here at Otis, all five Groups continued to maintain our responsibilities to organize, train, and equip Airmen for a variety of federal and state missions -- often doing so remotely or with minimum manning. Simultaneously, you prepared for – and excelled at -- an Air Combat Command Inspector General midpoint Unit Effectiveness Inspection AND a 16th Air Force Service Cryptologic Component inspection. You maintained the standards that are expected of you as Airmen, remained clear-headed and focused, and presented yourselves to the Governor and the President as ready and capable military forces. And since March, your careful adherence to DoD, State, and Wing rules of engagement regarding mask wear, social distancing, and self-care have allowed the Wing to maintain our mission readiness, and remain safe from widespread infection. So as you reflect on 2020, remember that you have done what few generations before you have been asked to do. You defended freedom at home and abroad, you cared for those in our society who needed it most, and you ensured that this Wing remains ready to meet any challenge. And you did it voluntarily, selflessly, and flawlessly. I am proud to call you my colleagues. And so -- as you look forward to 2021 – I urge you to not waste time dreaming about what your life MIGHT BE when this pandemic finally ends --- and it will end. Focus instead on all you have learned about yourself over the past year and use it to build the life that you want for yourself RIGHT NOW. Because this experience has made you stronger and more resilient than you were less than a year ago. And make no mistake – the federal government and the Commonwealth will undoubtedly continue to call upon the Massachusetts National Guard to respond to crises in the coming year -- whether they be from this virus, our climate, external threats, or the civil unrest that sometimes accompanies social change and the growth of democracy. So, if you can do so safely and within the guidelines set by our Governor and DoD leadership, then take a well-deserved break to celebrate the holidays with friends and family. Develop a self-care plan to recharge your batteries so that you can return in 2021 mentally and physically fit to fight and ready to answer the call, if asked to do so. And remember that, no matter what the coming year holds, the hard part is over. You have demonstrated that you are not only capable of surviving – but also thriving -- under great adversity. Whatever 2021 brings, you’ve got this. Colonel Riley, Chief Dubuc, the other Group commanders, and I are in constant awe of the level of professional excellence that each of you brings to the mission. On behalf of the entire leadership team, thank you for all that you do to make this Wing the best in the Air National Guard. Have a great December drill, and -- in the spirit of whatever beliefs or traditions you may choose to celebrate -- I hope that you have a happy and restful holiday season.

Every few months, photojournalist Vincent David Johnson sets out on a road trip. His purpose: to document “rural America and the little pieces of Americana I find along the way.” Writing earlier this month in The American Conservative, Johnson said he thinks of his work as “modern-day exploration.” The problem with that description, he acknowledges, is that explorers go to find something new. In contrast, “I know what I’m going to find and it hasn’t changed for almost three decades now.” Small towns are in serious trouble. Tens of millions of people left rural communities in the second half of the 20th-century, and many communities continue to lose their young people to larger cities. Businesses and population alike have taken huge hits, as freeways run motorists around (or over) these towns, but never slowly through them. Rural taxpayers subsidize their own demise, even as they pursue an approach to growth that is designed to decline. Vincent David Johnson’s article, and the challenges facing rural America, are the subjects of this week’s episode of Upzoned. Host Abby Kinney, an urban planner in Kansas City, is joined again by regular cohost Chuck Marohn, the founder and president of Strong Towns. Together, Abby and Chuck discuss the macro-forces arrayed against small towns, as well as the ways in which small towns become their own worst enemy. They talk about whether air travel is “one giant overpass for most of the country.” And they discuss the #1 thing we can do to help small towns. Then in the Downzone, Chuck talks about reading Adults in the Room: My Battle with the European and American Deep Establishment, by the former Greek finance minister. And Abbey recommends American Nations, by Colin Woodard, a book about the 11 regional “nations” that comprise North America. Lonely, selfish and maladjusted? NOT. Careful consideration of all the ramifications of your family-size decision is smart. Perhaps you’re leaning toward having only one child; there are plenty of good reasons to stop there. But you’ve heard only children are spoiled and selfish, or can be peculiar. It turns out these are myths. Journalist Lauren Sandler did a lot digging, and in this episode she tells us there is “a lot of data supporting the one-child family as a healthy, important choice.” Lauren wrote a Time magazine cover story on the subject, The Only Child: Debunking the Myths. She followed up two years later with the book, One and Only: The Freedom of Having an Only Child, and the Joy of Being One. Bottom Line: “In hundreds of studies during the past decades exploring 16 character traits — including leadership, maturity, extroversion, social participation, popularity, generosity, cooperativeness, flexibility, emotional stability, contentment — only children scored just as well as children with siblings.” FINAL WEEK TO FUND THE ONE PLANET, ONE CHILD BILLBOARD CAMPAIGNThe next $1,000 in pledges will be matched. Pledge Here. “As these climate issues have become more a part of our cultural conversation, I have found the population question to be missing in ways that really scare the hell out of me.”– Journalist Lauren Sandler "When Special Projects Coordinator Carolyn VandenDolder, and I sat down last week for this conversation with Lauren, I was expecting some good information from a knowledgeable journalist. Little did we know, we were in for a supremely thoughtful, intelligent conversation with an amazing woman, mother and citizen of the planet." – Dave Gardner Even though “one-child families make obvious sense in a time of diminishing resources,” Lauren reports, “the world is still telling us we should have larger families.” Lauren shares that kids have been sold a fantastical vision of what adulthood is supposed to be, but they’re bumping into a lot of realities now – student debt, housing costs, job prospects, childcare costs, etc. “It’s not about buying another Barbie for the dreamhouse anymore.” So when women begin choosing childfree or fewer children, the assumption is that they are not getting what they desire. But that’s just because their desires have been “set” before they’re even ready to decide what their desires are. A few tidbits of her insights: “We live in a society that expects women to be mothers more than they want us to be anything else.” “We aren’t really examining our family size choice, and when we do, we generally end up with a smaller family.” “It turns out brutal sibling rivalry isn’t necessary to beat the ego out of us; peers and classmates do the job.” “…hundreds of studies in the 1980s and found that only children had demonstrably higher intelligence and achievement; only children have also been found to have more self-esteem.” “As the mother of one child, I enjoy more time, energy and resources than I would if I had more children. And it is hard to imagine that this isn’t better for my family as well as for me.” “Instead of making family choices to fulfill breeding assignments we imagine we’ve been given, we might ensure that our most profound choice is a purely independent, personal one.” “Having the bandwidth for citizenship, pleasure, power, is very difficult for women while they’re raising children.” “I don’t care if you’re teaching your kids to recycle if you have five of them…. If you want to have five kids and that’s incredibly important to you, great. But don’t see it as the ‘woke’ choice.” LINKS: One Planet, One Child Billboard Campaign The Only Child: Debunking the Myths – by Lauren Sandler One and Only – by Lauren Sandler Only Children: Lonely and Selfish? – by Lauren Sandler Confessions of a Juggler – by Tina Fey What’s the rudest question you can ask a mother? We advocate and support a smaller, truly sustainable human population – through dramatic and voluntary reduction in birth rates. Zondag 19 mei 2019, Brugge Opgenomen vanuit het repetitiekotje van Might Be. Kevin Pottier was sidekick. Veel luisterplezier!
In 1800 a 12-year-old boy emerged from a forest in southern France, where he had apparently lived alone for seven years. His case was taken up by a young Paris doctor who set out to see if the boy could be civilized. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore the strange, sad story of Victor of Aveyron and the mysteries of child development. We'll also consider the nature of art and puzzle over the relationship between salmon and trees. Intro: Reading Luc Étienne's expressions forward and backward produces sentences in different languages. In 1883 John Maguire invented a raincoat that wouldn't make your legs wet. the restoration project. Joshua James. 15 October 2017 Small Group Study Questions: (1) Nerd question: Paul reads the Old Testament very strangely (well, he reads it as a first century, Jewish-Christian, former Pharisee). Do you find the way he has handled it alarming? Or just confusing? (Re-read 3.15-16 for one example.) (2) Paul began the letter (and chapter three) speaking derogatorily to the Galatians ("I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you..."; "You foolish Galatians"). In 3.15, he calls them "brothers and sisters." Can you empathize with Paul's anger and also his familial concern for these churches? have you had situations where you have had to manage anger and familial love for people? (obviously) Share a story. (3) After three chapters of argument, Paul begins to turn a corner by attempting to reinforce the *identity of the Galatian Christians. "So in Christ you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." (v. 26) "If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (v. 29) Discuss your identity in Christ. Do you accept that you belong to Christ, that you are children of God, that you are heirs? How does your wrestling with these concepts help/hurt? (4) In 3.28, Paul describes the barriers (of ethnicity/race, class, and gender) that are decimated by our union with Christ. Discuss the *practical effects of this in our lives. (Or perhaps better, discuss what the *practical effects MIGHT BE if we lived in light of this radical truth.)

Rueben Wood interviews Dj Luke Nasty on his new ep and success of his records. After the release of his certified Gold hit “Might Be” last year, Luke’s newest single “OTW” is on track to deliver the same accolade. The single broke top 10 at Urban mainstream radio with the video receiving more than 2M views so far and counting. Now, Luke is opening the doors to ‘Boom Boom Room,’ his newest EP that dropped today.According to Luke, the project is meant to provide hope. In fact, that’s precisely what inspired the effort’s Boom Boom Room title.“One of my favorite movies is Life starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence,” says Luke. “Eddie had this idea of this club called the Boom Boom Room and it was just his thing that kept him going. It was a dream. What really got inspiring was him telling people about it gave them hope. That’s what I hope my music and movement does,” said Luke.

Life has its ups and downs. We all experience trouble, perplexities, adversities and pressures. Being a child of God does not exempt us from having to live through these things in life. Life has a way of humbling all of us. At times, life will bring us to our knees because in a moment’s time, life can change. Paul writing to the Corinthian church makes a simple statement. We may be surrounded by trouble, but we will live in victory. Life does not determine our destiny; our response to life will determine our destiny. How we respond to the trials and tribulations in life will chart course of our life and will ultimately determine our eternity. Paul says, “We are troubled on every side, but not distressed”. The word used for trouble means pressure. He didn’t say MIGHT BE; he said ARE troubled. We will all experience pressure: on our job, in our marriage, in our relationships. By leaning our faith and relationship with God, we can overcome anything. We can be troubled, but how we respond to that trouble is up to us. Paul tells us that it is possible to be in a world where there is pressure, but not be overwhelmed. The bible tells us that no matter what pressure is brought to bear in our life, God has made a way out. This is contrary to what the world tells us. The world will tell us that there is no hope, and no way out. We can get out of it, if we will just stay with God. Out text says that we are perplexed, but not in despair. The word perplexed means confused. Life has a way of throwing things at us and we have no idea how to respond. Sometimes the pressure is so great that we become confuse and at our wits end. Paul tells us that we can be at our wits end, but not be at our faith’s end. Though we may be confused, God is not. God is never at His wits end. Life does not depend upon my knowledge of the big picture. It depends on His knowledge of the big picture. Even though we may be perplexed, we can rely on God. Paul says that we are persecuted but not forsaken. We suffer undeserved things, but God will never abandon us. God will never leave nor forsake us. There is nothing in the world that can alter the loyalty of God. People, friends, loved ones, our job may all forsake us, but God never will. God is on our side. Out text concludes by saying we may be knocked down, but we are not knocked out. We cannot get through life without being hit. However, we must get back up after we are hit and continue on. God’s promise is that He is on our side, and that no matter how many times we get knocked down, He will be there to help us get back up.
