Eight Senate Democrats break ranks to join Republicans in advancing a deal to end the government shutdown, sparking fury within their own party. President Trump issues symbolic federal pardons for 77 so-called “alternate electors” from the 2020 election, drawing outrage from Democrats and legal analysts who say the move has no effect on ongoing state cases. President Trump reportedly threatens to sue the BBC for $1 billion over a documentary that misrepresented his January 6th remarks. Two star Major League Baseball pitchers are indicted for allegedly conspiring with gamblers to rig pitches and profit from insider betting. Walmart: Learn how Walmart is fueling the future of U.S. manufacturing at https://Walmart.com/America-at-work Herald Group: Learn more at https://GuardYourCard.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Former Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney and National Review Contributing Editor Andy McCarthy is in for Jim on Tuesday's 3 Martini Lunch. Join Andy and Greg as they discuss the fate of Obamacare subsidies, how to stop Chinese nationals from buying land near U.S. military bases, and the leftist revolt (again) vs. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.First, as Democrats demand the extension of Obamacare premium subsidies, Andy and Greg explain how they were supposedly a "temporary" provision during the pandemic and should be scrapped. But Andy points out that the subsidies were another step in the Dems' tireless push for government-run health care, so rooting them out will be very difficult.Next, they react to reports that a convicted Chinese fraudster owns land adjacent to the Missouri Air Force base that's home to the B-2 Stealth Bombers that that targeted Iranian nuclear sites in June. Andy explains how there is some tension in law when it comes to stopping our top foreign adversary from getting so close to our most sensitive sites, but there's something far more important than the courts or Congress when it comes to stopping the Chinese from doing this. Finally, they shed zero tears for Sen. Chuck Schumer as the increasingly left-wing base revolts over how Senate Democrats handled the latest shutdown fight and Schumer's feeble attempts to appease the base through this pointless shutdown left him even more of a pariah in his own party. And as awful as Schumer has been, it's almost certain the next Senate Democratic leader will be even worse. Please visit our great sponsors:OneSkin uses the patented OS-01 Peptide™ designed to keep skin healthier, stronger, and more resilient over time.

The Spectator Australia deplânge situația.

Send us a textGiants fans are sending a message — and this week, it was written across the New Jersey sky. Before kickoff, not one but two planes flew over MetLife Stadium carrying banners aimed at ownership. One read, “Mr. Mara, get well and watch the Giants Nation Show,” and the other pulled no punches: “Mr. Mara, enough is enough. Clean house.”The message was clear — Giants fans have had enough. From empty seats to early exits, frustration is boiling over in Big Blue Nation. We dive deep into what this means for the team, the front office, and the relationship between the franchise and its loyal fans. Then, we tackle the latest Evan Neal trade buzz, after Josina Anderson reported that the Giants had exploratory talks with the Raiders about moving the struggling offensive lineman. What's real, what's smoke, and what's next for a former first-rounder fighting for his spot?Meanwhile, Deonte Banks finds himself under the spotlight after a report from the NY Post claimed he dodged reporters — literally sneaking out after a tough game. Is it immaturity, frustration, or just bad timing? We break down what accountability means in a locker room on the edge. And then, there's the viral postgame presser moment — Coach Brian Daboll being asked if he was crying after the loss. His reaction, the context, and what it says about the emotional toll of this Giants season all get the Goofball treatment. Finally, we wrap up with a full Week 9 NFL recap — every major game, key takeaways, and a few tangents that only the Goofball Army could deliver. From angry skies to locker room whispers, this week had it all — and we're here to break it down with humor, honesty, and a little Giants pain therapy along the way.

The Siege, Starvation, and the Start of the Communard Revolt. Sebastian Smee discusses how during the Prussian siege of Paris, Parisians suffered terribly in the coldest winter on record. Radical Republicans grew furious at the moderate government's failure to defeat the Prussians. When the government surrendered and accepted severe conditions, the radicals decided to revolt. The revolutionaries, gathering in March 1871, seized cannons and established the Commune. The Communards were more libertarian than communist, aiming to democratize society. They were violent immediately, and the government forces retreated to Versailles. Paris found itself besieged again by French government forces directed by Adolphe Thiers.

Paris 1874: The Artistic Revolt Against the Salon and the Birth of Impressionism. Sebastian Smee discusses how on April 15, 1874, an exhibition opened marking the birth of Impressionism. The group, including Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, Cézanne, Degas, and Berthe Morisot, set up the show deliberately outside the established Salon. The Impressionists were frustrated by repeated Salon rejections and were in revolt; they wanted to paint contemporary life and fresh landscapes, rejecting the hierarchy and "made-up landscapes." The name Impressionism originated as an insult from a critic, inspired by Monet's painting, Impression, Sunrise. Critics found the paintings unstructured and lacking deep meaning. A crucial figure absent from the exhibition was Édouard Manet, considered the "father of Impressionism," who still believed success required Salon acceptance and saw the Impressionist show as a small, isolated "silo."

Kenneth G. Appold joins Jana Byars to talk about his new book, Luther and the Peasants: Religion, Ritual, and the Revolt of 1525 (Oxford UP, 2025).  The German Peasants' Revolts of 1525 were a defining moment both for the Protestant Reformation and the history of European culture. But while the conflicts are well-studied, they are typically analyzed today from political and socioeconomic perspectives, whereas the protagonists themselves framed them in religious and theological terms. Luther and the Peasants takes these perspectives seriously to offer a novel and timely reinterpretation of the uprisings. A detailed examination of peasants' religious lives reveals commitments to peace, social harmony, and the environment that came into conflict with spiritual priorities of the Protestant Reformation, notably with those of Martin Luther. Drawing on the peasants' own documents, such as the famous manifesto The Twelve Articles, the book provides a thorough re-examination their actions, including their negotiations with lords and their organization into bands and Christian brotherhoods, and a fresh analysis of their behavior in battle. This ritual reconstruction makes peasants' statements and behaviors historiographically legible for the first time, effectively giving voice to an illiterate rural people, and offers new ways of reading Luther's 1525 writings on peasants, which are among his most challenging works. In this context, the 1525 conflict between Luther and the peasants comes to light as the collision of two different religious worlds, each incomprehensible to the other. This, in turn, reveals the important role played by religion in a defining moment of early modern European history. Kenneth G. Marjorie Taylor Green, Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and others decry the impact of deploying National Guard troops from one state to subjugate law-abiding citizens and legal immigrants in another state, covering up child abusers, and driving up costs via tariffs and the expiration of health insurance subsidies • Ongoing threats against citizens in states engaging in peaceful protests against the regime's authoritarian activities • The moral schism between those on the left and those on the right and their respective perceptions thereof Our hosts briefly check in on the latest dispatch from Troll-sylvania, this week's sick burn coming from someone trying (and failing) to insult members of our team by accusing us of sounding like we "must've went to college," which is hilarious on two counts: Thinking that a college education means you're stupid The incorrect grammar baked into the unsuccessful insult In an effort to take things out on a high note, our hosts wrap up the episode by trading answers to questions pulled from our Delve Deck conversation card sets! Kenneth G. Appold, James Hastings Nichols Professor of Reformation History, Princeton Theological Seminary. Learn more about your ad choices. In this solo episode, I dive into the electrifying intersection between Zeal & Ardor's genre-bending music and Frantz Fanon's revolutionary psychology of liberation.I trace the origins of Zeal & Ardor — from Manuel Gagneux's provocative “what-if” experiment blending slave spirituals and black metal — to their evolution into a powerful exploration of history, rage, and rebirth. Through Fanon's lens, this fusion becomes more than music: it's a sonic revolt, a reimagining of how trauma, faith, and resistance can transform into new cultural life.Along the way, I unpack Fanon's ideas about the “white mask,” violence as catharsis, and the creation of a new humanism, showing how Zeal & Ardor's sound captures the psychic energy of decolonization. This episode is part cultural analysis, part therapy session, and part love letter to the power of art to rework our deepest wounds.

Today we're going to cover developments from 2022 onward. One of the main themes in that period has been the rise of the far right. In 2022, the parties of the radical left, the Communist Party and the Left Bloc, lost ground and were no longer part of the governing majority. In this year's general election, the right-wing Chega Party became the second-largest force in the Portuguese parliament. Chega's breakthrough came at the expense of the Portuguese Socialist Party, which now had the third-largest group of MPs. For the Socialists, it represented a dramatic fall in the space of three years. Catarina Príncipe is a contributing editor for Jacobin and she co-edited the book Europe in Revolt. She's also a member of the Left Bloc.
