Can fairy tales really shape a child's moral compass? Join me as we navigate the enchanting realm of classic fairy tales, inspired by literary giants like Dr. Vigen Guroian and Bruno Bettelheim. We'll unravel the mysteries behind these timeless stories and their profound influence on nurturing a child's moral imagination, contrasting the enduring narratives of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen with their modern retellings.

[úvod do 16:47] II. Pinocchio: Chudá, otravná loutka – a ještě otravnější otec [33:30 až 49:20] V. Co o nás říkají současné pohádky? Get ready to be enchanted! In this episode of the Reading with Your Kids podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with the acclaimed magician, Jeff McBride. Jeff shared his incredible journey into the world of magic and how it all started with a simple "pick a card" trick that changed the course of his life. Jeff's passion for magic is truly infectious. He explained how a deck of cards is a treasure trove of stories, with each suit and number representing different elements of the natural world. From the 52 cards symbolizing the weeks of the year to the four suits mirroring the seasons, Jeff showed us that magic is so much more than just sleight of hand - it's a gateway to storytelling and imagination. As a master of his craft, Jeff also shared his teaching philosophy. He emphasized the importance of not just learning magic tricks, but diving deep into the psychology, theater, and history behind the art. Jeff encourages his students, young and old, to explore the full spectrum of magic, from dance and acting to philosophy and folklore. One of the highlights of our conversation was Jeff's discussion on the power of repetition in storytelling. Drawing from the work of renowned child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, Jeff explained how repeated exposure to stories helps children internalize the lessons and gain confidence by identifying with the protagonist. Whether you're a seasoned magician or simply looking to add a little wonder to your family's reading time, Jeff's insights are sure to inspire. So get ready to unlock the magic of storytelling and create cherished memories with your loved ones! We also had a chance to chat with Dr Andrea Clark. Dr Andrea, a clinical child psychologist, celebrates the importance of communal meals and emotional learning in her debut children's book, "Welcome Home, Indigo Owl," which explores themes of community, friendship, and emotional growth. Fairy tales are among the most familiar cultural objects, so familiar that we let our kids play with them unsupervised. At the same time, they are also the most mysterious of artifacts, their heimlich giving way to unheimlich as soon as we give them a closer look and ask ourselves what they are really about. Indeed, these imaginal nomads, which seem to evade all cultural and historical capture, existing in various forms in every time and place, can become so strange as to make us wonder if they are cultural at all, and not some unexplained force of nature — the dreaming of the world. In this episode, JF and Phil use "Rapunzel" as a case study to explore the weirdness of fairy tales, illustrating how they demand interpretation without ever allowing themselves to be explained.

The title of this week’s episode—”Let’s go Bruno”—requires some explanation, though you’d be right in assuming that “Bruno” fills the same place as “Brandon” in the more familiar slogan of the moment. In this case it refers to the famous and celebrated child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim. Lucretia was struck by Ann Bauer’s searing article in The Tablet, “I Have Been Through This Before,” which recounts the awful abusiveness and quackery of Bettelheim which somehow never drew any critical attention, and suggests some obvious parallels with today’s COVID mandate mania, not to mention a parallel public celebration of an obviously defective doctor whose name rhymes with grouchy. Sample from Bauer: [He] required the unquestioning, devout allegiance of his team to constantly remake reality so that it conformed to his recommendations. Steve recalls once knowing someone who had been committed to Bettelheim’s care as a child, and who wrote after Bettelheim’s death with the same point in Commentary in 1991: Ronald Angres, “Who, Really, Was Bruno Bettelheim?” The close: So to the scandal of terror spread by Bruno Bettelheim in his school another scandal needs to be added: the fact that so many people who knew about the terror went to such lengths to cover up for him—and, to judge by the mostly adoring accounts that have appeared in the press after his death, that they are still willing to do so. We don’t actually get to the Bettelheim story until the last half of the episode, as we cover a lot of related ground getting to that point, including some new whisky reviews, some samples from the Babylon Bee’s brand new Guide to Wokeness, the continued descent of President Brandon, what’s up with Kyrstin Sinema, and the prospects of the Virginia gubernatorial election next week. Lucretia, to my shock and surprise, is actually optimistic about Youngkin’s chances! Otherwise, as she says herself, she’s “mad as hell and not going to take it any more!”

Witty and wilfully idiosyncratic, Carter conjured sex and death from fairy tales in The Bloody Chamber, used her Somerset Maugham Award money to leave her husband and go to Japan to write, and absorbed the Latin American influences of Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez. We hear how she enlisted the Marquis de Sade as an ally of feminism, embraced pulp genres and opened doors for David Mitchell, China Miéville, Helen Oyeyemi and more, while always attending to the grammar of the folk story. "When you look in the background of the Mona Lisa you see how much attention the artist paid to the landscape - it's at a certain horizon, the left horizon is higher than the right horizon, it's interesting. The parents and the family are the landscape into which the infant is born. If every infant is thought of as if it is the Mona Lisa in the center, potentially beautiful, the landscape is the parental and family environment."      Episode Description: We discuss the emotional context into which every child is born. Dr. Szajnberg and his colleagues' research followed 76 individuals from birth to age 30. They collected and studied films of mother-infant feedings along with later careful interviews and testing throughout the children's lives. They learned that there are elements of parental caretaking that dependably increase the likelihood of the child's favorable development. Likewise, they've learned that there are elements of parental caretaking that dependably increase the likelihood of the child's problematic development. Dependably but not with certainty. They describe numerous examples of individuals whose outcome is not reliably predicted from their early development. Dr. Szajnberg closes with a description of his own early development and the possible role that it played in his own life.   Our Guest: Nathan Moses Szajnberg, MD is a psychoanalyst and was the Freud Professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem 2007-10. Dr. Szajnberg attended the University of Chicago College and Medical School and trained in pediatrics, general psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry.  He's received two NIMH awards, the Ticho Award, and was the Wallerstein Research Fellow in Psychoanalysis (2005-16). He is the author of Reluctant Warriors: Israelis Suspended between Rome and Jerusalem, Sheba and Solomon's Return: Ethiopian Children in Israel, and Jacob and Joseph, Judaism's Architects. In the second episode of our series on the forest in fiction, Ellen Handler Spitz - a renowned specialist of psychology and the arts and senior lecturer in the Humaninties program at Yale - and I discuss Sondheim and Lapine’s musical, Into the Woods. Into the Woods brings together characters and story lines from several well-known fairy tales, drawing particularly on the Brothers Grimm’s versions, and explores the moral repercussions of the characters’ actions in a second act that begins “Once upon a time… later.” In his 1976 book The Uses of Enchantment, psychoanalyst Bruno Bettelheim likens the woods of fairy tales to the unconscious. Spitz gives us a new version of this analogy, arguing that in Into the Woods, the woods function as “the province of and” where the choices we have to make in real life are suspended; where you “can meet a wolf, or a witch, a giant, a spell or a prince,” which may cause you to change or to learn something new. But there is no easy resolution in Sondheim and Lapine’s musical. As Red Riding Hood reflects, after having survived her encounter with the wolf, “isn’t it nice to know a lot!…. and a little bit not.”If you’ve never seen Into the Woods, I encourage you to watch the stage production before you listen to this episode. A big thank you to Stephanie Kovacs Cohen and Adam David Cohen from Arc Stages who allowed me to use audio excerpts from their wonderful 2104 production of Into the Woods in this episode. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2020 64:00

Far from an offhand or casually constructed story, The Ickabog intentionally continues many of the themes and structures of the Harry Potter books in a fairy tale genre.  In this month’s episode, Katy and John talk with Harry Potter scholars John Pazdziora (University of Tokyo-Komaba) and Lana Whited (Ferrum College) about our first analyses of The Ickabog, which was released in installments from June to July 2020. The slow release has allowed fans of Harry Potter once again the delights of speculating about what will happen next, and we have captured that spirit in our conversation recorded after Chapter 51 was posted.  Lana Whited points out the connections with "The Emperor’s New Clothes," while John Pazdziora shows how they fit within the French conte tradition that combined fairy tales with social criticism. Following both those traditions, The Ickabog lures the reader into a politically sharp and often violent tale. We discuss what the fairy tale theories of Bruno Bettelheim tell us about how children process gruesome stories. The third-person omniscient, even parental, voice of the narrator serves a purpose in talking readers through the difficult experiences of the Cornucopians.  Other literary allusions abound. The name “Beamish” references “The Jabberwocky”; the Ickabog reminds of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The Ickabog’s cave recalls Odysseus’s encounter with the Cyclops, but also Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, where the stories that compose reality are revealed to be false. We consider whether The Reluctant Dragon and The BFG might contains clues for us about the Ickabog’s true nature. We also use Freudian psychoanalysis to interpret the story in surprising ways. The Ickabog’s name allows several possible literary and linguistic interpretations. The Ickabog is a story about stories: why we tell them, how they influence us, and how our interpretations may change with our experience of the world.  There are similarities between this story and both Harry Potter and the Cormoran Strike series. From common thematic elements to alchemical symbolism and once again a chiastic, turtleback structure for the tale, we consider how parallels to these other works reveal the meaning of The Ickabog. We then use that knowledge to make predictions for its end. How well did we predict it? Listen in and see what you think!

Intro: Reading Luc Étienne's expressions forward and backward produces sentences in different languages. In 1883 John Maguire invented a raincoat that wouldn't make your legs wet. Understanding of cognitive bias is a great inroad to self-acceptance of your own having made bad decisions because it's something we're all saddled with; every single one of us. Everyone is set up with the same set of biases. At this point, most cognitive biases are bugs; not features but just understanding that cognitive bias exists can keep us from kicking ourselves when we're down. Even though cognitive biases are sort of a built-in problem within the mind, they're also something that can help you make a connection to that past imprints in your mind so that you can heal. - Jesse Lawler How can you wade through all of the different opinions, research, and even your own past experiences to uncover and explore your cognitive biases? JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST  20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE On Wellness Force Radio episode 207, AXON Labs Founder and Smart Drug Smarts Podcast Host, Jesse Lawler, joins us for the third time to share how to heal the psychic wounds that have been imprinted in your mind, the best way to seek out information without the bandwagon effect, and the dangers of groupthink and how to avoid it. Discover how you can get out of your mind and into your soul to reveal who you truly are.  "We're always completely aware of the context of our own decisions which is why they seem completely reasonable to us. Just because they seem reasonable to us, it doesn't mean they're worth something to anybody else and vice versa." - @Lawlerpalooza http://bit.ly/wfpodcast    "Intelligence is as fixed as a person's height." Right? But guess what - you're part of the species that invented platform shoes, stilts, elevators, helium balloons and rocket ships. Smart Drug Smarts is for people interested in maximizing their brains -- both in health and utility -- using the latest findings in neuroscience. Join Jesse Lawler as he chats with neuroscientists, biochemists, futurists, and multi-domain researchers into cognitive enhancement. Sleep, optimal nutrition, supplements and nootropics, cognitive enhancement, Artificial Intelligence, ketogenic diets, psychedelics, and tDCS are all on the table. Smart Drug Smarts doesn’t advocate any particular approach -- we’re here to provide an accurate-as-possible body of knowledge in a field where the options available are growing daily.   Listen To Episode 207 As Jesse Lawler Uncovers: Whether or not in-person job interviews actually have any value at all when it comes to choosing the right candidate. The actual number of cognitive biases that we experience in a lifetime. Placebo vs Nocebo in studies and how they can affect the outcome result. How overwhelming it can be to make choices; especially when we face decision fatigue. Psychic wounds - how we can perceive them as trauma and how they imprint in our minds. The various expectations every person is born with and how a moment of being let down can negatively affect them. Bruno Bettelheim's thesis about expectations and being let down. What people get wrong or confused about cognitive bias. How optical illusions are an excellent way to understand what cognitive bias actually is. The fundamental attribution error - what it is and how we naturally react to it in different scenarios. How we can seek out the best, correct information out there amongst everything that's available to us. The replication crisis when studies are repeated or semi-repeated by different people with new results that don't match up with the original findings. How to correctly educate yourself on a new diet before actually trying it out. The power of looking at both the pros and cons in order to make a good decision. The best way to seek out information without the bandwagon effect, the dangers of groupthink and how to avoid it, as well as how psychic wounds have been imprinted in your mind. What kind of world we might be setting up for future generations. Whether or not psychedelics and deeper states altered states of consciousness help reimprint past tragedies and elevate the pain of cognitive biases in our mind. What work you should do in order to integrate your mind before actually doing psychedelics. How you can improve your emotional intelligence by exploring your cognitive biases. What Jesse is doing now to continuously explore and discover who he is. Power Quotes From The Show “The world is something that we make. If we’re giving everybody participation awards so a kid feels like they’re the specialist snowflake in their class just by being there, that doesn’t necessarily set themselves up for today’s world.” – @Lawlerpalooza http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "We intuitively think that more choices are good. So, if you give people three options, they'll analyze all their options and make a choice. However, if you give them 35 choices of the same thing, we won't want to read every label and either we end up not making a choice or just grab the closest one and make a completely uneducated choice versus at least looking over the top three." - Jesse Lawler "According to Bruno Bettelheim's thesis, the developmental age at which a person has when they experience their first big disappointment with reality really sets the psychic trajectory in motion that they will have for the rest of their life. You don't necessarily need to try to address it but sometimes that's good in certain cases. However, at least try to realize why you missed understanding the world so much that it came and smacked you in this particular way. The difference between somebody who receives a psychic wound when they were two versus fourteen is how they address it from a psychological standpoint and what's going to motivate them going forward throughout their life." - Jesse Lawler  "So much of the information that each of us get day in and day out now is coming through some sort of digitally mediated stream rather than our own direct senses whether it's this conversation that we're having over the internet or news that we're reading that somebody else heard, it was written down, or transmitted to us, etc. If you had lived 200 years ago and you were a farmer, a lot of the information you got was from the work of your own hands. I would have known how the soil worked because I dig the soil with my own shovel and had first-hand experience with the world. You might not have known a lot but the things that you would've known came from direct experience and not mediated by any third party." - Jesse Lawler "Groupthink is definitely a danger. If you're in a group of 10 or 12 people, what the first person says has a primacy effect and can really affect what everyone else says. The first one to speak up is usually one of the more dominant ones of the group and holds a lot of social capital among everyone and it becomes harder for each person to voice their own opinions if that's something that's going to cause conflict. So, when I seek advice, I try to get advice individually from a group so that they're not coloring one another's opinion." - Jesse Lawler "The world is something that we make. If we're giving everybody participation awards and if a kid feels like they're the specialist snowflake in their class just by virtue of being there, that doesn't necessarily set themselves up for today's world but it might set them up for the world that exists in 20 years when if you feel bothered by anything outside, you can just plug into virtual reality where all of a sudden you're the star of your own television show in a Trumanesque world." - Jesse Lawler Links From Today's Show Jesse Lawler Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Smart Drug Smarts Facebook Twitter YouTube WFR 097 Jesse Lawler: Brainpower, Consciousness, & The Placebo Effect WFR 036 Jesse Lawler: How to Build A Bulletproof Brain Smart Drug Smarts Podcast Smart Drug Smarts Podcast #220 - Cognitive Fallacies with Dr. Richard E. Apparently Isabelle's work is winning the bidding war at the art show. This is how I view art, it is possible to win or lose. Jon came shopping with us and we had a bit of a conversation about visiting our friend Ken and having a nice time over at his place. Jon held a baby, lots. The title has literally nothing to do with the podcast, but, Jon came up with it.... We talked a bit about Bruno Bettelheim, a 'psychologist' (he probably didn't have a PhD in psych, indeed, he probably only ever took three intro courses) and his views on autism. Isabelle is reading his stuff for an art project/grant she is putting together.

This free online lecture is part of the Mythgard Academy Guest Lecture Series. Both mythical studies and the study of fairy-tales took on new importance during the early nineteenth century, along with the entirely new development of comparative philology. Jacob Grimm was in all three cases the pivotal figure. The relationship between them continued to fascinate both scholars and creative writers, including Andrew Lang, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and their successors. This lecture will show how scholarly research acted as a direct stimulus for many creative writers.   Recordings from Thursday, Sept. 10 Watch: Video Listen: Audio Suggested Reading C.S. Good stories are often referred to as spellbinding. Of course they are not witchcraft, but the deft hand of the writer, who concocts a magical combination of the familiar and the unknown, of surprise and recognition, of enchanting prose. Drawing from the ideas of Kate Bernheimer and Bruno Bettelheim, among others, we’ll investigate the history of fairy tales, their story structures, the ways in which they’re rooted in a knowable world, and the elements that give them a sense of urgency, surprise, and wonder. We will connect fairytale techniques to those used in contemporary stories, and consider exercises that might bring enchantment and magic to your prose.
