Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 79th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging nearly 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2022! For this installment, titled "The Play's the Thing," in my Friday Night Feature I talk about show-within-a-show plot points I encountered in "Leverage," "Burn Notice," "The Closer," "Monk," "Hung," "In Plain Sight," "The Simpsons," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Better Off Ted," and their place and use in productions. In Cross Connections, I explore K. Callan's appearances as a Golden Thread through a lot of the media I grew up watching and throughout my media collection, and representing the tightest connection I've found so far to "Knives Out" through Frances Conroy in "Remington Steele" and Ed Begley Jr. in "St. Elsewhere" to "Six Feet Under," binding quite a few shows to the mystical center of my media collection in my "Studio Six Feet Under" challenge. I also noted Justina Machado in the "One Day at a Time" reboot puts every Norman Lear production also one step removed from "Six Feet Under." And K Callan's involvement in several shows featured in Chris Cooling's podcast "Forgotten TV" gave me a great opportunity for a quick shoutout to that excellent production. Other connections I talk about in my Classic Collection discussion include Christine Baranski's appearance in "Psych" with the more usual recurring character of Cybill Shepherd in "Cybill." Also, John Schneider's appearances in "Dirty Sexy Money," "Nip/Tuck" and "Leverage," and connections through "The Closer," "Cougar Town," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Rescue Me." In Fond Reflections, together with the loss to the world of Betty White, I extend my deep condolences to the "All About Agatha" podcast team, with the sudden passing of cohost Catherine Brobeck, celebrating her contributions in superlative discussion, debate and insights into the vast majority of mystery novelist, Queen of Crime Agatha Christie's body of work, and all the best to Kemper Donovan in the wake of the devastating loss of his friend and cohost in this more than five year journey. It was so good to have this too brief acquaintance. In my Classic VHS-to-DVD collection, discussion of dustups on "Rescue Me," additional cross connections, a screen capture of cool art I saw in "Burn Notice" I posted to VideoFuzzy's Instagram account, a clip from Portishead's "Only You" in the cold open for "Warehouse 13," and the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers. Also, tracking the car crash I foreshadowed a couple episodes back, documenting some weirdness I encountered in hopping from Binder No. 6 to Binder No. 7 – a blank disc, two copies of disc 1241 (now marked 1241-1 and 1241-2), and the odd displacement of Disc 1449, now exhaustively documented among this latest installment of "History's Most Boring Mysteries." In my Current direct-to-digital collection, discussion of "Doctor Who: Flux," exploring Weeping Angels, Division, an Ood, the Mad Mole of Liverpool, a snake alien involved from the earliest beginnings of UNIT, and at the center of it all, a tri-phasic Doctor and her team with chameleon arch tech, a grumpy doggo, a planet called Time, the Temple of the Mora and a confrontation with the Vanquishers while a Gallifreyan scientist tries to destroy the universe from outside of it. Also, commentary on "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," "Queens," "Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes" and the 2002 Bruce Willis movie "Bandits" featuring Tanita Tikaram's "Twist in my Sobriety." And in What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I have been watching "My Hero Academia," and we recently took in the prequel installment, "The King's Man." Fun show. Finally, a link to my eighth installment of "VideoFuzzy: The Video" with comments from my Friday Night Feature: https://youtu.be/Xdn6tRm2LU4 TOP TEN: Here's a "top ten" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort. One of the stars of the award winning hit shows, Castle and This is Us, sits again with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres. He is THE Jon Huertas, and he tells the story behind saying the line "the canvas came up empty" a few hundred times during his tenure on Castle and how he had to get creative to make the dialogue interesting and keep the job exciting. Actors need to think outside the box because often times dialogue is exposition without any depth or deep character development. He reveals how he won the job on This is Us. He was doing a chemistry read with the lead of another hit show, One Day at a Time, Justina Machado, and working with the legendary Norman Lear, when the casting director saw his work and asked him last minute to meet NBC executives. He won the part, as he says, "by thinking outside the box and making interesting choices" different from the other 10 men vying for the same role. It's not about the words on the page, it's about what each actor brings to the words that is truly unique only to themselves. There is no one like him. There is only one Jon Huertas. Justina Machado’s lives by the motto that “It’s Never too Late.” After working for years as a supporting actor in popular television series, including HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and USA’s “The Queen of the South,” she landed her first lead role when she was in her early 40’s in the critically acclaimed show “One Day at A Time.” Like her on-screen character, Penelope Alvarez, in the re-imagined series from the 70’s, Machado is passionate about challenging stereotypes about what it means to be a Latinx family. She is especially proud to be part of a show that made its name by showcasing representation in all its forms, from PTSD, immigration, addiction, LGBQT, all of which she believes can help change the narrative. And because “it’s never too late,” she will be making her directorial debut next season as the show moves from Netflix to its new home at Pop TV.

On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Podcast, Graham & Jocelyn discuss how Netflix has arbitrarily canceled some of its greatest original shows. The two co-hosts focus specifically on 5 original series which the streaming platform has either canceled, or announced it will not renew for another season. We begin by lamenting the cancellation of Tuca & Bertie, starring Tiffany Haddish, Steven Yeun, and Ali Wong, after a one season run. Next Jocelyn & Graham moved on to one cancellation which has hurt them the most; which happened about two weeks ago when Netflix announced it would not renew The OA for a third season. The OA is very special to our podcast and if you're a new follower, you can find our special episode "Deciphering The OA" which is episode 13. Jocelyn has been a vocal supporter of The OA on Instragram as she spearheaded a #SaveTheOA campaign which has been joined by several thousands of Instagram followers. The conversation continued on to the cancellation of Friends From College, a fantastic little comedy starring Keegan Michael Key, Fred Savage, Billy Eichner, Annie Parisse, and Cobie Smulders (Robin from HIMYM). Next we talked about the cancellation of the show One Day At A Time; which was revived as a Latin family with Rita Moreno as the coolest Abuela in the world, Justina Machado as a single mother and war veteran raising a family while dealing with the wounds of war. Jocelyn & Graham expressed their relief as they learned the show was picked up by Pop TV. The last cancellation was that of Jessica Jones. Jocelyn theorized the cancellation of all the Netflix's Marvel shows might well be the streaming platform anticipating it might be forced to give up the rights to those series once Disney Plus is up and running. Graham loves Jessica Jones, like he really loves Jessica Jones. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/rss/kickinandstreaminpodcast?auth=QVLr3ZF4bBkffNZls4lBWTuUc2Tb0MD0)

‘I hope people can say, “Your show made my life better”’: Justina Machado & Gloria Calderón Kellett

The star and showrunner of Netflix’s "One Day At a Time" — one of Hollywood's few series starring and led by women of color — talk Hollywood, sexism and the stereotypes they’re tired of hearing about Latinas. It’s a TV show about a Cuban-American single mother who works as a nurse. She’s an Army veteran and her ex-husband is still a contractor overseas. She has post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety. Her teenage daughter is an out and proud lesbian in a world that isn’t always welcoming. Her son has been bullied by racists who tell him to “go back to Mexico,” even though he’s a third-generation American. Her mother, a devout Catholic and Cuban immigrant, and lives with them in a small apartment in a working-class Los Angeles neighborhood. If you’re among those who read that and think the show isn’t for you, Machado is having none of it. “We get this question a lot, like, ‘What does it have to do with me? Why should I watch it?’” Machado said in an interview for POLITICO’s Women Rule podcast. “And I’m saying personally, I grew up watching white people and I identified with them. And I didn’t have anything in common with ‘Growing Pains.’ I had nothing in common with Kirk Cameron. … They were telling universal stories about family, about love, about all of these things.” “When I wake up in the morning, I don’t think, like, ‘Another day in the life of a Latina!’” chuckled Gloria Calderón Kellett, the series’ co-runner, who joined Machado on the podcast. “You just wake up, and you’re a human and you’re trying to go about your day.” Over its three seasons, “One Day At a Time” has earned a devoted fan following, both for its sharp writing and for its perspective on the world. It’s one of relatively few TV shows in Hollywood both led by and starring women of color (Machado’s mother is portrayed by Rita Moreno, the legendary EGOT winner whose career has spanned from “Singin’ In the Rain” and “West Side Story” to the Netflix series). Having strong women behind the camera makes a difference, too. “Day One of our show, we sit down with our staff and we say, ‘Hey, listen. If you have something — your kid has something at their school, you get to go to that,’” said Calderón Kellett. “‘And for those of you who have chosen not to have children, but your dog or your mom or your best friend is the most important person in the world to you, they have something? You get to go to that. All of you get to live your lives. And we’re going to try very hard to get out of here so that you can have dinner and have a full life outside of this.’ The moment you say that to anybody, they will kill for you.” Having worked a steady career in TV on series like “How I Met Your Mother” and “Rules of Engagement,” Calderón Kellett said she was moved to take the approach because she’s toiled away in so many toxic and unaccommodating male-dominated writers’ rooms. “Here I am in Hollywood, and I’m suffering [because of] a guy who doesn’t want to go home because he doesn’t like his wife and kids, and he wants to hold me hostage here while he’s telling dick jokes,” she said. “The more I would be in rooms where there would be half women, or more and more women, the more that type of misogynistic behavior ended. It would just start to end.”

It’s a golden age of television, the common refrain goes. But for some traditionally marginalized communities, there’s nothing golden about not seeing yourself reflected in the shows you watch and stories you see. "One Day at a Time," a Netflix reimagining of the hit 1970s show of the same name, is seeking to shift that narrative. Ed and Daniella sat down this week with Gloria Calderón Kellett, Justina Machado, and Isabella Gomez—the showrunner and stars, respectively—at the Eaton Hotel in Washington, D.C., to get their sense of what representation means to them and how their show fits into a broader push for including more diverse voices in Hollywood. In speaking with the three women, it’s striking to hear how the communities they portray on screen—Latinx, LGBT, veterans, and more—have affected them, not just the other way around.

"I have people that are not Latino arguing with me about what we’re like," Justina Machado says about two-thirds of the way through her chat with Todd. The actress, who joins ITYI to talk about the latest season of her Netflix sitcom One Day at a Time, has been giving superlative performances for two decades now, with a career that encompasses everything from the live episode of ER to an Arsenio Hall sitcom to the classic HBO drama Six Feet Under. But it's One Day at a Time that has given Machado a part that lets her show off all she's capable of. In any given episode, she might play the highs of being a hugely accomplished working mom, or the crippling lows of depression and PTSD. She gets to deliver wisecracks that bring instant laughter and long monologues that will wring tears. She gets to do anything and everything and a little bit of what's in between. That's why Todd wanted to have her on, but their conversation very quickly ranged from talking about One Day at a Time to talking about women of color finding work in Hollywood, while trying to avoid taking roles that are simple stereotypes, as well as what Machado has learned from getting to work with Rita Moreno (a pioneer when it comes to Latina actresses) on One Day at a Time. And lest you think that sounds too heavy, know that every answer Machado gives is punctuated by her amazing laugh — one of the best in show business. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on The Little Radio Show we talk about our favorite new (and not-so-new) Netflix shows. These include: One Day at a Time Club de Cuervos A Series of Unfortunate Events “One Day at a Time” is garnering a lot of attention. It's a reboot of a 1970s/1980s hit sitcom that launched the career of Valerie Bertinelli. The new version, a Netflix original, has a mostly Hispanic cast and focuses on three generations of a Cuban-American family. Justina Machado plays the mom, a newly-separated military vet who has recently-returned from the Middle East. Of particular interest is the fact that the show marks Rita Moreno's return to the (small) screen. We talk about our opinions on the show. “Club de Cuervos” is revisited … enough said. And we take a look at “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” Netflix's take on Lemony Snicket's children's book series. Isabella Gomez was born in Medellin, Colombia where she was raised. She grew up an only child surrounded by older kids and adults, making her an outgoing little girl. Isabella loved to be the center of attention from an early age and would make friends wherever she went, from school to waiting rooms. She was always very assertive so when a 6 year old Isabella told her mom that she wanted to act, her parents knew she meant it. Luckily, her mom Eliana had a close friend that was involved in the industry and through him she started dipping her foot in the commercial world in Colombia. She was in love right away, and her vivacious personality at such a young age caught the eye of those around. From there she was booked to be the host of the launching of a government issued program that focused on providing food for kids in need in the state. At the mere age of 6 she hosted a 2 1/2 hour long ceremony all by herself, shocking the audience and those working with her. She continued to host ceremonies and kept working on commercials. When Isabella was 10 her dad Sergio decided to move to the United States in search of a better life. Once in Orlando, Florida she pushed to finally be put in professional classes so she could further pursue her passion, but the language barrier prevented her from being able to go in right away. Determined to train, Isabella worked on learning English and getting rid of her accent. Soon enough, her mom agreed to enroll her in the little acting studio down the street, the Lisa Maile School. She eventually took almost every course available, all the while forming a strong bond with an administrator there, Loretta Rispoli. She would later make a phone call to close friend Traci Danielle, president and owner of Brevard Talent Group, urging her to give this little newcomer a chance. Soon after Isabella had signed with her very first agent, an agent she still has to this day and considers a close friend. Now with Traci’s help Isabella broke into the commercial industry in the United States, working on projects such as Tobacco Free Florida, Friendly’s, Publix, Universal Studios and so on. After working with a couple different coaches she decided to try a new one her mom recommended, Kia RiddickTaylor. This ended up being a match made in Heaven both in a professional sense and a personal one. Isabella found a new home, a new family and a second mom in her studio. Due to the relaxed, open-minded nature of the class and the people in it she was able to finally fully give herself over to her craft with Ms. Kia guiding her every step of the way. It was with her that Isabella believes she began finding who she was as an actress. With a whole new skill set and a boosted confidence Isabella was sent off to audition for her very first character role in a then new Nickelodeon show called Grachi. The process took about 6 months, a time in which the show was renamed Every Witch Way, and she had made it to test deals and was being flown out to Los Angeles for the final audition. It was everything her and her parents had dreamed off, it seemed as if she had made it. Getting the call that she had in fact not been chosen shattered her. However, instead of wanting to quit, it made her want to get booked even more. She flew to LA and met with a few managers, one of them being Doyle Rice, who her dad took an immediate liking to. However, she chose someone else and secured her first manager. Isabella went on to a Theatre Magnet Program in high school and her freshman year she flew out to LA for 7 weeks so she could partake in her first pilot season. After booking a print for Coke and several callbacks for different shows she landed her first character role, Cristina Sandoval on Matador, Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming show. For about the next year she flew back and forth from Florida to California in order to work on the show and attend school and soon after talks of moving to the City of Angels began. She kept auditioning and training and half way through her sophomore year she got cast as one of the leads in The Illusion by Tony Kushner. The show is set up so the leads play 3 different characters throughout the show and she played Melibea/Isabelle/Hippolyta. She took the challenge head on and after it was over she felt certain she was ready to take the next step in her career.   In the summer of 2015 Isabella and her family packed up once again and moved cross-country so she could further pursue her career in acting. Her contract with her previous manager being over, she reconnected with Doyle Rice and signed with him. His style and personality were a much better fit for her and her family, making them more excited and driven than ever. She started training and auditioning again, but she found it difficult to adjust to a new teacher and to being in the room after doing self tapes for so long. The first 6 months of her living there were dry, with just a single callback and an increasing frustration. After the holidays the new year came and Isabella had a long chat with Ms. Kia that reassured her she has the capability to do this. With a new mindset and a new pilot season to focus on she put all her energy and effort into her craft. She booked a little role on Modern Family and continued to audition for other projects and soon after she found herself at a callback standing in front of Norman Lear. He was looking for the daughter in a remake of One Day At a Time, this time with a Cuban-American family. A chemistry read and a few days later she got the call that she had booked the role of Elena Alvarez, who she would play alongside the legendary Rita Moreno as her grandma and the wonderful Justina Machado as her mom. Now the first season is almost done and Isabella has started looking for her next project until the possible season 2 of ODAAT.
