POPULARITY
On Tuesday August 21, 2012, at 3:30 pm ET, I spoke with Josh Tillman, who'd left a popular band called Fleet Foxes to venture out on his own. He called himself Father John Misty and earlier that spring, Sub Pop had released his acclaimed debut album, Fear Fun. Josh and I had a talk about its meta- and philosophical themes, why he name dropped people like Neil Young and Jean-Paul Sartre, the novel he'd written, why he left Fleet Foxes, his interest in comedy, what his favourite Bob Dylan song was and under appreciated and over discussed aspects of Dylan's work, future plans, and more. Paul Bellini is noted as being the unofficial 6th Kids in the Hall, alongside Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Paul was one of the key writers for the Kids in the Hall's TV series and is also known onscreen as 'the guy in the towel.' Paul was there from the very start, at the legendary sketch group's early Toronto shows, and he gives us a deep dive into his history of Kids in the Hall, his collaboration with Scott Thompson, and the healing power of dark, twisted comedy. Send us a Text Message."The Kids in the Hall," a Canadian sketch comedy troupe, has left an indelible mark on the world of comedy since their inception in 1984. Known for their quirky and often surreal humor, the group comprises five talented members: Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Kevin McDonald. Together, they created a unique brand of comedy that resonated with audiences and influenced countless comedians.Kevin McDonald, one of the troupe's standout members, has been a driving force behind the group's success. Born on May 16, 1961, in Montreal, Quebec, McDonald has always had a knack for comedy. His comedic style is characterized by his physicality, expressive face, and ability to portray a wide range of characters, from the absurdly hilarious to the subtly satirical.McDonald's contributions to "The Kids in the Hall" are numerous and significant. He often played the role of the everyman caught in bizarre situations, which allowed him to showcase his impeccable timing and versatility. Some of his most memorable characters include the hapless corporate drone, the endearing and clueless Darill, and the enthusiastic but misguided "Sir Simon Milligan" of "The Pit of Ultimate Darkness" sketches.Beyond his work with "The Kids in the Hall," Kevin McDonald has enjoyed a diverse career in comedy and acting. He has made appearances in various television shows and films, lending his unique brand of humor to different projects. rWotD Episode 2551: The Kids in the Hall Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Sunday, 28 April 2024 is The Kids in the Hall. The Kids in the Hall is a Canadian sketch comedy troupe formed in 1984, consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Their eponymous television show ran from 1989 to 1995, on CBC, in Canada. It also appeared on CBS, HBO, and Comedy Central in the United States. The Kids made one film, Brain Candy, which was released in 1996. They reformed for various tours and comedy festivals in 2000. They later reunited for an eight-part miniseries, Death Comes to Town, in January 2010. An eight-episode revival season was released on May 13, 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. Their name came from 1950s TV comedian Sid Caesar, who would attribute a joke that did not go over well (or played worse than expected) to "the kids in the hall", referring to a group of young writers hanging around the studio. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:29 UTC on Sunday, 28 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Kids in the Hall on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.
We're ending the first week of our April theme known as “AWKWARD LAUGHTER 2: THE FLOP” with a selection that is a fond memory from our youth. Apparently, not enough people can say that they watched “KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY” in the theaters when it came out in 1996 but our two hosts actually did pay to see this movie. Or they at least borrowed money from their parents to go see it. The Canadien skit comedy troupe garnered a loyal audience in North America after spending years on basic cable and are absolutely influential to modern comedy. (The good stuff, anyway) It seemed exciting when Paramount opted to release a Kids in the Hall movie but, unfortunately, not much more than the hardcore Kids in the Hall fans went to see it. We were huge fans but were also children who were, admittedly, watching something more adult than our parents intended. It's amazing what they didn't pay attention to right under their noses. Decades later we reevaluate a personal cult favorite. A film project that brings about mixed feelings upon reflection for the talented players involved those being the director Kelly Makin and the cast. Shit, we might as well list them: Scott Thompson, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald & Mark McKinney. There you go. Does this smart character-driven satire of corporations and cynical marketing still hold up? Does it deserve more? How would this movie fare amongst people who didn't know anything about The Kids in the Hall? Hear us out and watch the movie at this link (that worked as of this posting) right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc4ND4Javf4 Pretty sure direct media for this has been out of print for a while so click away. Dear Podcast Peeps We've been trying to come up with an excuse for re-running the Kids in the Hall Podcast.. Why would we want to be listening – Again - to the dialogue between myself, Bruce McCulloch, and Scott Thompson. Maybe if it were Mark McKinney, Kevin McDonald, or the wonderous Dave Foley it would be sexy fresh, alive and legal. Keep in mind that somebody from KITH had to work the “secondary markets” and Scottie and Bruce drew the short straws. Please enjoy this encore performance on Mulligan Stew Podcast and don't let it spoil your weekend. Thanks, tdm

As returning guest and investigative journalist Alexander Zaitchik researched the twisted history of the pharmaceutical industry and big pharma's approach to patenting medicine for his book OWNING THE SUN:A People's History of Monopoly Medicine from Aspirin to COVID-19 Vaccines, a movie kept coming into his mind: Brain Candy, the Kids in the Hall's 1994 cult comedy about the devastating life cycle of a fictional cure-all psych med. He discovered that while the Kids in the Hall had set out to make a comedy broadly satirizing the widely prescribed '90s mood boosting drug Prozac, they'd accidentally created a comedy nightmare with surprising bearing on the real life practices of drug manufacturers. Brain Candy is an unheralded, rare example of perfect comedy. It's as dense with jokes as Airplane that ties together those hundreds of jokes into a tight, original story with a coherent argument. It was made at a time when the Kids in the Hall were estranged from each other and suffering from a range of crippling personal losses. It was critically lambasted, ignored by audiences and quickly dumped by its studio. I'd include a link for where you can stream it legally but, hey! Guess what? There's no such link. You can buy it on Blu Ray or DVD (and maybe find it and watch it, hint hint) but you can't legally stream it. This episode is a long time coming. Alex and I are both longtime Kids in the Hall fans and have been talking about doing a CDC episode about Brain Candy for years. Our dawdling worked out well. Our plan was to devote an episode to a largely forgotten cult movie. Little did we know that the Kids in the Hall would release a new sketch show on Amazon Prime that opens with a sketch about Brain Candy and features characters from the movie in several sketches.
Celebrating the return of their beloved and influential sketch show, streaming now on Amazon Prime, this week's guests are The Kids In The Hall… yes, seriously, we got all of them. Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson join Jesse David Fox for a hilarious (and at times somewhat chaotic) interview breaking down one of their favorite sketches from the new season, “Tart.” With a unique behind-the-scenes look at just how this talented group of friends manages to still find that comedy spark with each other after all these years, this episode will surely satisfy fans new and old. Howdy, listener! As our esteemed announcer Bill Heywatt has so aptly stated, you're listening to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and I am Marc Hershon, your host for the 305th edition of this 11-year-old audio entertainment production series. But I am only one of two hosts of Succotash. The other is Tyson Saner, and the two of us usually switch off hosting every other episode of the show so that this awesome task doesn't become too overwhelming and, also, so we can take time sampling and harvesting the finest – or at least most interesting – of what the legions of comedy soundcasts have to offer. Sometimes we even stray off the track of pure comedy offerings when it comes to genres. If you missed last week's Episode 304, Tyson was serving up samples from a trio of shows which included Hello Wonderful, Prolly Shoulda Known Better, and That Happens. You can still catch that installment at places like Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Audible, Amazon Music, Soundcloud, Podchaser.com, Podbay, YouTube, and on our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com. Apologies, by the way, for the late dropping of this episode. I got a little overwhelmed with real world stuff and so it took a while to get to all the listening, clipping, and assembling this week's show, which is entitled “Clips On A Whim”, I'm offering snippets from a quartet of soundcasts, including Entry Level, Last Things First, Parks and Recollection, and Timesuck!. I keep vowing to find our show some real sponsors to help pay for all the expenses we have that it takes to keep this show up and running but so far we still only have our one, long-running and completely fictional advertiser Henderson's Pants, makers of fine trousery since 1683,a and this week we are touting their exotic Chillin' Churidars. CLIPS Last Things FirstLet's start with a show that's been around longer than Succotash called Last Things First, hosted by journalist-comedian Sean L. McCarthy. A product of his homesite, TheComicsComic.com, this show has almost 400 episodes under Sean's belt, and it's totally engaging as he interviews comedians and other funny folks about what they consider historic firsts and lasts in their lives and careers. He recently talked to Bruce McCulloch from Kids in The Hall and, in just 30 minutes, they get pretty deep. In this clip, Bruce talks about their movie Brain Candy and also about some of the live shows. Parks And RecollectionI didn't really watch the NBC sitcom Parks And Rec, during its original run on TV but ended up loving it when my wife and I binge-watched the hell out of it during the pandemic lockdown. Now there's a watch-along soundcast for it, in the vein of Office Ladies for The Office. It's Parks And Recollection, hosted by actor and series regular Rob Lowe, along with writer/director Alan Yang. They do a one-for-one episode breakdown of the show and they're currently up to Season 3. I clipped their show about episode 5 from that season, entitled “Media Blitz”, and the guys talk about this being the first time the show gets into a local morning radio show called “Crazy Ira & The Douche”. Timesuck! with Dan CumminsDan Cummins is the host of Timesuck!, which is more than a comedy soundcast. He's a funny guy, but some of the episode dip into some pretty gruesome stuff – true crime and murder topics – but then he has episodes about cryptids and UFOs and cults and, well, with almost 300 episodes, each running between 2 and 3 hours in length, Timesuck! covers an amazing array of topics. Our clip is from Episode 286 from March of this year, entitled “Betty White: More Than A Golden Girl”. It's an amazingly in-depth retrospective of her life…with a few detours that may not be entirely factual. Entry Level with Brooks WheelanEntry Level with Brooks Wheelan features the host, a comedian who has the distinction of being a cast member for a single season on Saturday Night Live (from 2013-2014), who talks to people – mostly fellow comedians but also just regular folks - about not just their careers but specifically what jobs they held just before deciding to getting into whatever their main endeavor became. Our clip comes from Brooks' recent Episode 231 where his guest was Mitra Jouhari, an actor, comedian, and writer who you may know from her Adult Swim show the Three Debras and she also co-hosts a soundcast with Joel Kim Booster called Urgent Care. Shortly after moving to New York to pursue her still-defining itself career, Mitra took a gig working in a mattress store. Time for me to get out of here and upload this late entry. Don't forget that Tyson Saner will be back in this same feed next week with Epi306. In the meantime, if you're running late for a flight with your earbuds danglin gout of your ears as you jog down the airport concourse and somebody heading the other direction asks if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Then, back in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, John Nugent, and Irish Siri to talk about great movie scenes set in stadiums (or arenas), discuss the week's movie news (including a little bit we recorded on Friday morning), and review Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Quiet Girl, and Vortex. Bruce McCulloch and Vance Banzo are two guys from Edmonton, Alberta guys, united by comedy. McCulloch is a member of the legendary Kids in the Hall who has used his clout to boost Banzo's hilarious, multicultural comedy team, TallBoyz. The new Kids and the Hall is airing on Amazon Prime just as TallBoyz make its U.S. debut on Fuse TV and Fuse+. We talked with them about who gets to make what joke, if comedy is really harder because of our more sensitive times, and dealing with notes from higher-ups. Your host Tim Molloy also revisits an upsetting moment watching McCullock get pounded with questions over one of his many divisive (but lovable!) characters. Bruce McCulloch's characters and disposition on The Kids in the Hall would lead you to conclude he's somewhat shy, sensitive and kind. And while that may be true now, Bruce says he was an angry young man, a drinker, a fighter. Growing up in Calgary, there didn't seem to be much of a future for him, but improv comedy became the way out. Bruce talks with Marc about the darkness lurking beneath the Kids and why the group dissolved after making the movie Brain Candy. Bruce also talks about his friendship with the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip, his career behind the camera, and his new role producing and directing a sketch comedy troupe called Tallboyz.
