Adam talks with British journalist and author Kate Mossman about her excellent book Men Of A Certain Age, in which she details encounters with elder statesmen of Rock. Kate tells Adam about meeting Kiss, Ray Davies and Kevin Ayers, her deep-level Queen issues, and the extent to which the relationship between father and daughter informs her feelings about some of her older male musical idols. And Adam recounts a recent encounter with a musical hero that was so nearly a dream come true… but ended in abject humiliation.Conversation recorded face-to-face in London on March 11th, 2025Thanks to Séamus Murphy-Mitchell for production support and conversation editing.Podcast illustration by Helen GreenPRE-ORDER 'I LOVE YOU, BYEEE' by Adam Buxton - 2025NORD VPNEXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee!PICS, VIDEOS AND LINKS (Adam's website) Hosted on Acast. ... and we wouldn't have it any other way! Chris and Pedro are back with a new season of your favorite podcast (um...hosted by two knuckleheaded, middle-aged Bronx-guys, of course). On this episode we salute all the hardworking — and the lazy-ass — Dads out there. Our holiday doesn't get the same hype as "Mother's Day" but honestly, but that’s just fine with us. Sit back, put up your feet, and enjoy the Return of the Macks!
Ah, Mother's Day. That day of the year that brings with it a mixture of guilt, apprehension, obligation and confusion. You know: The essential ingredients of any familial relationship. For Pedro and Chris, the relationships with their mothers are fraught with baggage -- some more than others. In Chris's case, it's more the size of carry-on luggage. And with Pedro...well, let's size it up as a steamer trunk. And having the bombardment of commercial messages from retailers, florists, online advertisers and the media about the importance of Mother's Day does not help.Should we, as sons, act out of a sense of obligation? Shouldn't we be honoring our mothers all year-round?Do we automatically owe them our respect and love because, let's face it, they gave birth to us, wiped our asses when we were little and put up with our nonsense for lo these many years? How do we define the relationships with our mothers as sons and adult men and fathers ourselves?Well, we dive into all of that in this latest episode of About Men Radio. Give a listen and tell your friends. And by the way, would it kill you to call your mom just once in a while?
Farmville. Mafia Wars. Poking friends. Ah, Facebook. Not that many years ago it seemed so innocent and harmless. Taking online quizzes about which Harry Potter character I was? There is a kitchen magnet I have that boasts about drinking coffee: “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Yeah, it’s a similar feeling I have about retirement. I’ll retire when I’m dead. New "Kahnversations" Podcast with Actor Alanna Ubach! In this episode of "Kahnversations," we interview Alanna Ubach. Alanna Noël Ubach was born in Downey, California, USA and is of Puerto Rican and Mexican decent. A chameleon-like actress and voice over talent, she is best known for her roles in MEET THE FOCKERS, RANGO, the Peabody Award- winning MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE, HUNG, LEGALLY BLONDE, WAITING, and her portrayal of Jo Frumpkis in Bravo's first scripted series, GIRLFRIENDS' GUIDE TO DIVORCE. She was recently seen in the Netflix film TO THE BONE, alongside Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves, and has a voiceover role in Pixar's upcoming COCO. She has voiced several cartoon roles on series such as EL TIGRE, WELCOME TO THE WAYNE, TEAMO SUPREMO and HANDY MANDY! Ubach is hardly recognizable from one character to the next, leveraging her broad width of versatility on stage, screen, and animation. She began acting professionally at the age of five. Quoted as "an exceptionally talented and protean actress" by The New York Times and Variety, Ubach made her Off-Broadway debut at the age of fifteen in CLUB SODA. She later starred in KINDERTRANSPORT at the Manhattan Theater Club and PATRIOTIC BITCH, a one woman show at New York's Harold Clurman Theater. Alanna resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Thomas Russo. You can download or subscribe to the podcast for FREE by clicking below. If you like “Kahnversations,” please leave a rating or review on our iTunes page! There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. Spending time with Donny Most, aka, Ralph Malph, IS Happy Days. Warm, open, thoughtful and fun, Donny, maintains his teen spirit- infectious sweetness. Two degrees of craziness, I reconnected Donny with his childhood camp bud, who doubled as my boyfriend (see Cloris Leachman), coveted his first show-biz gig, and share mad love for his lifelong best friend, Anson Williams. Maybe that 'splains why I feel like I've known him forever. It seemed like such a good idea at the time. Chris and Pedro were just planning on having a drink or two after work at a local dive bar. What could possibly go wrong? Listen in as two (very) hungover old friends are hit with the sudden realization that they may be too old to party like … Continue reading BONUS EPISODE: We Really Are Getting Too Old For This → The post BONUS EPISODE: We Really Are Getting Too Old For This appeared first on About Men Radio.
We found it! Pedro and I recorded an episode a few weeks ago that fell somewhere into the couch cushions but fear not, we’ve dusted it off and it’s as good as new. Well, almost. We do discuss (belatedly for you dear listeners) our sense of loss at the death of our beloved Carrie Fisher, … Continue reading Lost Podcast Is in the Wild! → The post Lost Podcast Is in the Wild! appeared first on About Men Radio.
A midlife crisis makes for good movie fodder: There is the wayward husband who suddenly wants to take up with a younger woman or the guy who believes that getting a bright shiny sports car will make him youthful. The truth is having a midlife crisis is not just the stuff of fiction. It is … Continue reading “Manopause” and Having a Midlife Crisis → The post “Manopause” and Having a Midlife Crisis appeared first on About Men Radio.
I busted Father John’s chops for not wanting to join the rest of us at the shooting range. He took it in stride — as he always has — and just casually lit up his cigarette with the air of a man who’s heard it all before. You see, John dislikes guns and he wasn’t going to … Continue reading Locked and Loaded → The post Locked and Loaded appeared first on About Men Radio.
I think I have reached the official “hey-kids-get-off-my-lawn” age. I do not think of myself as being a curmudgeon but I am starting to embrace being curmudgeonly. I revel in the things that annoy me and enjoy being self-righteous about it. So in the best spirit of the late Andy Rooney from “60 Minutes,” here … Continue reading Hey You Kids! Longtime listeners of the podcast know that getting the entire AMR Posse to reach a consensus on anything is quite the achievement so this episode may come as a shock. Father John, Coach Silvio, SuperDad, Mele Mel along with yours truly, El Kaiser, have unanimously agreed that getting healthy should be our top priority for the rest of the year. … Continue reading No More Excuses, It’s Time to Get Healthy → The post No More Excuses, It’s Time to Get Healthy appeared first on About Men Radio.
In this latest episode of About Men Radio shenanigans, Pedro and Chris talk about men’s health — no, not the magazine — but what it takes for men our age to be of sound bodies. (Forget about our minds, those are shot!) Partly the discussion was spurred on by recent medical procedures we both endured … Continue reading Talking Men’s Health → The post Talking Men’s Health appeared first on About Men Radio.
As fathers, we hardly lead the lives of television characters such as “Father Knows Best,” “Leave It to Beaver,” or “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.” Unlike television characters, our parenting efforts lack a script. We make it up as we go along, drawing on what experiences we recall from our parents. The results are far … Continue reading Father’s Day Roundtable → The post Father’s Day Roundtable appeared first on About Men Radio.
This sure as heck is not your father’s economy or job market. Gone are the days when a person could expect to start, stay and retire from the same company after 30 or more years of service. Just because Pedro and I are men does not mean we can explain everything about what our gender does. Paul's guest this week is Emmy-Award winning writer, comedian, Executive Producer and Showrunner Mike Royce. A fellow upstate, New York native, Royce grew up near Syracuse and attended Ithaca College before heading to NYC to pursue comedy as a career. Mike gives a lot of background on the New York City comedy scene post-boom when he was the house MC at the Comedy Cellar performing with a lot of his comedian buddies like Dave Attell, Todd Barry, Louis CK. Mike then went on to a job as an audience warmup comedian on Spin City before teaming up with Ray Romano on Saturday Night Live and coming up with one of the great catchphrases of all-time "Sweet Sassy Molassy" during the hilarious SNL Sportscenter Spoof. Mike then moved to Los Angeles when he was offered a writing job on Everybody Loves Raymond, and went on to win two Emmy Awards, before being hired as the showrunner for Louis CK's HBO Sitcom "Lucky Louie." From there he went on to be the showrunner on "Men Of A Certain Age" starring Ray Romano, 1600 Penn, and has a new show called "Enlisted" that begins in November on Fox. The two talk about the transition from standup to TV writing and producing as well as getting into some sports talk, as Mike is a big hockey fan- NY Rangers and now LA Kings.
Tune in to an early edition of "That's Entertainment" with Tammy Jones-Gibbs as I interview actress Suzy Nakamura from the new NBC's show "Go On," which also stars actor Matthew Perry on Tuesday, September 11 @ 10:30am ET.
Apologies in advance to anyone who believed me when, during the last edition of Succotash - that would be Epi15, that there was going to be a "regular" clip-heavy version this time. As luck, the Fates and some long-ago reserved vacation time would have it, I'm vacationing in Honolulu, Hawaii, as I both record this epi and bang out this blog entry. Since, therefore, I'm about 2400 miles from my beloved Studio P (and my equally beloved executive producer Joe Paulino and his audio magicianship), I'm opting to run an interview as the core of this edition. Jon Manfrellotti It's a great interview with a longtime friend of mine, comedian/actor Jon Manfrellotti. You might recognize him from his recurring roles on TV, either as Gianni on Everybody Loves Raymond or as Manfro, the bookie from Men Of A Certain Age. I talked to Jon about his standup career as well as his acting work, then we also veer into his favorite hobby: playing guitar. There are parallels between getting into a comedy career and starting a podcast, as well as maintaining both, and we hit on that a little bit, too. In addition to the interview, I do manage to get in five podcast clips and a Burst O' Durst, so it's like presents under the tree. I even run 15 minutes over with this episode to give you a little extra Succotash for the holidays! Here's who's up this time around... Affirmation Nation One of my favorite podcasts to come on the scene this year is Seth Morris' character of Bob Ducca and his short daily attempts to make life just a little bit better. Check out Bob's Christmas wish list, then go catch him over on Earwolf.com and on iTunes. Wrong Foot Podcast Podcasting is a great medium for audio sketches and you'll find the folks behind theWrong Foot Podcast stretching the envelope. They can be found at WrongFoot.net and on iTunes. Delicious Mediocrity We've featured Derek Sheen and Douglas Gale before, but that's because they put out a nice, consistent product when it comes to interviews and commentary. With a comedy angle steeped in the Northwest, catch more at DeliciousMediocrity.com and iTunes. The Gentlemen's Club Host Caleb Bacon has cranked out the episodes and features a mixed bag special of guests, ranging from strippers and porn stars to comedians, actors and sports celebrities. The clip we include here features adult film actress Randi Wright talking about her antics on TV. Get yourself a free pass at GentlemensClubPodcast.com or on iTunes. The Dhead Factor In a previous appearance, these guys from Australia's capital were only doing a rambling commercial - here's an actual clip. I was recently interviewed by Jabs, one of the Dheads, and you can catch that show and their others at TheDheadFactor.tumblr.com and iTunes. We finish off the show with our regular feature, the Burst O' Durst, done up by politicomic Will Durst, who spouts off on his own site at WillDurst.com and on Twitter as @WillDurst - follow him! You can also follow us, @SuccotashShow and, if you REALLY want to help a podcast out, jump up our listing in the podcast section of iTunes and rate us and/or click that li'l ol Donate button the right hand side of the page...that one...right there. No, no...THERE. We'd really appreciate it. My New Year's Resolution is to deliver a full-on clip-heavy episode of Succotash first thing in 2012. Until then, however, get busy with Epi16 and please be sure to pass the Succotash. — Marc Hershon

Mike Royce Executive Producer and writer of Men Of A Certain Age and Everyone Loves Raymond is our guest. Men Of A Certain Age is a fantastic series on TNT starring Ray Romano Scott Bakula Andre Braugher and Brian White to name of few in this outstanding cast. This comedic drama has taken on a storyline dealing with the subject of teen anxiety and panic disorder. It is written and portrayed so well and with such insight into parental confusion and teen avoidance that I just had to have him on. Equally intriguing is the obsessive compulsive tendencies of the father (Ray Ramano) and the effect that it has on the relationships in his life. This show is far from gloom and doom, it is one of the funniest, smartest and compelling TV Series you will find. If you have not seen this show you are missing out . It is hilarious - heart warming - contemporary and one of the best shows on television. Who knew men of that certain age could be so cool!
