The No. 6. The pivot. The volante. The trinco. Defensive midfielders come in many shapes and sizes, but they've become perhaps the hottest property in the game behind an elite goalscorer, because the elite ones are so rare and are often the difference between the best and the rest - just ask Manchester United. Today, we took a look at those at the top of the pile - the top five defensive midfielders plying their trade right now, and in the process, had a deep think about what the role actually entails. There's some time to think about who might be the next generation starting to make their mark here as well. On top of that, there's Things We Love, where Dean discusses Kai Havertz's recent glorious form as Chelsea's out-and-out centre-forward; Sam talks about Roberto Carlos playing for a Sunday League side in Shropshire (off the bench!) and Jack waxes lyrical about Mikel Arteta's Arsenal being in the ascendancy, and their youthful vigour paying off. Click ‘Subscribe' now to make sure you never miss our Premier League betting previews! Merry Christmas! We hope you're suitably stuffed full of turkey, roasts, veg and mince pies. We can verify that we certainly are on this end! We've got Premier League predictions and picks for every game in this festive period, so let's get into it! Monday's action starts in south Londona at Selhurst Park, as Crystal Palace entertain Leicester City. Palace have lost their last two games by a 10-0 aggregate scoreline. The Eagles are still 14th in the standings, but these results cannot continue under Roy. Frank Lampard's Blues are at home to Aston Villa later in the afternoon, with Chelsea hitting some inconsistencies in December having won two and lost three of their previous five games. Monday's action is rounded off with Manchester City's trip to Goodison Park. The Toffees are second in the division and could top the table, should they beat Pep Guardiola's side by an 11-goal swing. It could happen. Maybe. Into Tuesday, and we've got five games to enjoy. Brighton are at home to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal; that's a real relegation six-pointer(!) Europe's worst side (statistically proven) Sheffield United make the trip to Turf Moor to take on fellow strugglers Burnley. At the same time, Southampton host West Ham at St. Mary's Stadium. We've got a real clash of styles at the Hawthorns, as Sam Allardyce's West Brom welcome Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United. Can Big Sam start the Baggies' survival here? Tuesday's action is rounded off with Manchester United's clash with Wolves. The Red Devils are up to 4th in the table and are now just five points off top spot. The final game of Matchday 16 is on Wednesday, as Tottenham welcome Fulham to north London. Jose Mourinho's side have fallen off dramatically in recent weeks and are without a win in four league games. Due to that, Spurs have now dropped to 5th. Spursy. The final game of MD16 sees defending champions Liverpool play Newcastle at St. James' Park. Our resident host Eduardo Siles is once again joined by football broadcaster and writer Tom Williams to work their way through another busy and hectic Premier League weekend on Matchday 16. Part 1 We have reached the halfway point of the Premier League season. When we made our preseason predictions I don't think many would have said that Liverpool would be 13 points clear of second place Leicester City, that Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur would be in sixth place, that Carlo Ancelotti's Everton would be in 10th place and that Mikel Arteta's Arsenal would be 12th. It's a crazy time we're living in. Hello and welcome to the final Total Football podcast of 2019. I am your host Declan Harte, and joining me is Andrew Conway. Andrew, this all makes sense though, right? Part 2 Arteta's start as Arsenal manager hasn't exactly gone to plan, picking up 1 point from 6, but have the performances been promising? Manuel Pellegrini was sacked as West Ham manager, with David Moyes returning to the club on an 18 month deal. VAR had a busy Christmas, with everything really coming to a head during the Liverpool-Wolves game, but this week saw numerous goals chalked off over very fine margins. IFAB have stepped in to suggest the Premier League are using VAR wrong, but it seems like it's not very clear how else they can be using it. Part 3 Over the last week every Premier League club has played two times, most playing their games within 48 hours of each other. Wolves in particular drew the short-end of the stick having to play the champions Man City and the champions-elect Liverpool within 40 hours. This saw sides stretching their squad limits, with Brendan Rodgers even making as many as nine changes between fixtures. Now, only two days later, they all must play again on Wednesday. Many managers across the division have been very outspoken in their desire for this fixture congestion to change. What are the solutions to this annual problem, and what effect has this had on this season's topsy turvy table? Part 4 The fixture congestion continues as 18 teams take to the field on Wednesday, with the final 2 competing on Thursday. On Wednesday we have the two big games of the matchday. Old foes renew their rivalry in Pep Guardiola versus Carlo Ancelotti. And later that evening Arsenal host Manchester United, can Mikel Arteta pick up his first win as Arsenal manager?
