More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Send us a textGet the Episode Guide at https://michellenezat.com/510downloadWe have an enemy known as the Father of Lies, so it makes sense that one of his tactics is to convince us to believe lies about ourselves AND lies about how God sees us. We combat these lies with the truth from Scripture, and Megan Woods sings about this in her song "The Truth."Let's take the message from this song and see where it comes from in Scripture. And let's take it a step further to examine the WHOLE truth.Key Points Covered in This Episode:Song Introduction - "The Truth" by Megan WoodsA powerful song that speaks against negative self-talk and replaces lies with biblical truth.Michelle's initial hesitation in using this song on the podcast and how she overcomes it.The Dangers of Misapplying ScriptureThe fine line between biblical encouragement and self-centered theology. How the church can sometimes distort Scripture to make it more about us than about God.A snippet from Michelle's novel, "A Seat at the Table" - Purchase on AmazonBreaking Down the Lies vs. The Whole TruthLies we tell ourselves: I'm not enough, I'm unlovable, I'm a failure. The enemy's tactics: Repeating accusations that become deeply ingrained. The exercise of writing down accusations to recognize patterns.Developing a Biblical WorldviewWhy knowing Scripture for yourself is crucial. The balance between focusing on God and understanding our identity in Him.Scripture's direct response to self-doubt and identity crises.Song Lyric Analysis & Supporting Scriptures"The truth is I am my Father's child. I make Him proud, and I make Him smile."1 John 3:1 – We are called children of God.Romans 8:16 – The Spirit testifies that we are God's children.Numbers 6:24–26 – God's face shines upon His people.Psalm 18:19 – God delights in us."I was made in the image of a perfect King."Genesis 1:26-27 – Created in God's image."He looks at me and wouldn't change a thing."Ephesians 2:4-5 – God loved us even when we were dead in sin.God's love is unconditional, but it transforms us (Galatians 2:20, Colossians 3:9-10)."The truth is I am truly loved by a God who's good when I'm not good enough."A reminder that our worth isn't found in ourselves but in the goodness of God."I don't belong to the lies; I belong to You."John 8:44 vs. Galatians 5:24 – The contrast between belonging to the enemy and belonging to Christ. This Week's ChallengeRead Psalm 139, but look for what you learn about God more than what you think it says about you. Read 1 John and the context of Romans 8 and observe what you learn about God's love and our status as God's children. Do I Know Who I Am?John 8:14 “Jesus responded, “Just because I am the one making these claims doesn't mean they're invalid. For I absolutely know who I am, where I've come from, and where I'm going. But you Pharisees have no idea about what I am saying.”This was not the verse I thought I would be using this morning. I first went to look at John 8 for verse 12, which says, “Then Jesus said, “I am light to the world, and those who embrace me will experience life-giving lights, and they will never walk in darkness.” Is that a great verse, or what? I think we all know Jesus is the light of the world. We have probably even said that before. However, I am not sure we all know that means we will never walk in darkness. Some of us may feel like we are walking in darkness right now. However, this verse is telling us that if we embrace Jesus, we will experience life-giving lights and will never walk in darkness. Why do we feel like we are walking in darkness, then? Is the enemy blocking out this life-giving light? Are we looking for this light in all the wrong places? Why isn't this life-giving light shining through into our darkness? I know some people who are very close to the Lord, and yet this year has been really tough for them. They feel they are walking in darkness right now, and they feel like they can't even pray. Maybe you are in this place too? If so, I want to assure you that the Lord is with you, even in this darkness.I have studied something called the Dark Night of the Soul in depth this year as some of the women in my mentoring group really wanted to learn more about it. One big thing that I learned is that even though the Lord seems really far away from you when you are going through it, He has actually never been closer to you. I learned sometimes it is necessary for us to go through a dark period where we receive no consolation from the things that used to bring us consolation so that we can learn to rely only on the Lord and not on the feelings we get from Him. We need to continue to have faith in doing the things we are used to doing, even when they don't bring us great joy, comfort, or even peace. The people who have gone through a Dark Night of the Soul all have at least one thing that helped them: being faithful in their prayers and their spiritual habits, even when they received nothing back from them. People who are going through a Dark Night of the Soul feel extremely far from the Lord. They can't feel His presence, they don't hear His voice, they don't feel any consolation. Yet, God is right there by their side, giving them the strength to persevere, and when they come out of it, they will be so much stronger and closer to the Lord.I thought that was what this whole episode was going to be about. They I read on a bit further, and I saw the verse for today. When I read it, the words just pierced my heart immediately. Let me read it to you again. “Jesus responded, “Just because I am the one making these claims doesn't mean they're invalid. For I absolutely know who I am, where I've come from, and where I'm going. But you Pharisees have no idea about what I am saying.” the words that pierced my heart were, “For I absolutely know who I am, where I've come from, and where I'm going.” As soon as I read it, I heard that voice inside me say, do you? Do you absolutely know who you are, where you've come from, and where you are going?”I knew those questions were ones that I needed to share with all of you because they are great questions. I was praying with some youth over the weekend, and identity seemed to be something they struggled with, too. There is so much confusion and chaos in the world today. That is from the enemy. God is not the author of confusion and chaos. He is the author of peace. The enemy wants us to question who we are. He wants us to question where we came from and where we are going. If we are looking to the world to help us define who we are, then, of course, we would be confused. Our identity doesn't come from the world; it comes from God. He is our creator. He knows exactly who He created us to be.We tend to associate our identity with our vocation or our jobs. For instance, I am a mom and a wife. I might think that is my identity. However, my most important identity is that I am a child of God.There are so many songs out there that remind us of who we are in God's eyes. They remind us of our identity. There is a Lauren Daigle Song called I Believe. The chorus of that song says, “ You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing. You say I am strong when I think I am weak. And you say I am held when I am falling short. And when I don't belong, oh You say I am Yours, And I believe (I). Oh, I believe (I). What You say of me (I). I believe. The only thing that matters now is everything You think of me. In You, I find my worth, in You, I find my identity. As you can see in this song, God's truth is contrary to most of what we hear from the world. God says we are loved. He says we are strong. He says we are held; we are never alone. The world tells us we are on our own. It tells us we aren't good enough, and it tells us no one will love us unless we pretend to be someone that we aren't. Those lies are not from the Lord. I bet it makes Him so sad when we believe those things about ourselves. Kind of like how we feel when we hear our kids say they don't like things about themselves. One of my sons used to say that he hates how he looks. He said he looks in the mirror and hates how the person looking back at him looks. He is now starting to love the way he looks. He has found a style of clothes that he likes. He has found out how to wear his hair. I am not sure if he likes it because others are starting to notice him more or if people are starting to notice him more because he is more confident in who he is. It makes my heart so happy that he likes who he is right now. I imagine that is how the Lord feels when we are loving on ourselves too. When we are secure in who He says we are.One of my newest favorite songs is called The Truth by Megan Woods. The chorus of this song says: “The truth is I am my Father's child. I make Him proud, and I make Him smile. I was made in the image of a perfect King. He looks at me and wouldn't change a thing. The truth is I am truly loved by a God who's good when I'm not good enough. I don't belong to the lies; I belong to You. And that's the truth.” I love the song because it reminds us of the truth that we are children of God. He is our Father, and he is proud of us. He looks down at us and smiles. He made us in His image, and He loves us just as we are. He wouldn't change a thing. God is good, even when we aren't. He makes us good if we let Him.We do not belong to the lies of this world. We belong to God. If we wonder who we are, we can look to the Bible to see who God says we are. You can search the internet with the key words who does God say I am in the Bible and you will find lots of scripture verses. I will put the link to one article I found in the show notes. (Click Here for the article) Here are a few to get you started.I am a child of God. (John 1:12)I am a friend of Jesus (John 15:15)I have been justified and redeemed (Romans 3:24)I will not be condemned by God (Romans 8:1)I have been called to be a saint. (1 Corinthians 1:2; cf. Ephesians 1:1; Philippians 1:1; Colossians 1:2)I am a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)I have been set free in Christ (Galatians 5:1)I am chosen, holy, and blameless before God. (Ephesians 1:7)There are so many others, but I don't want to keep you here all day. I invite you to click on the link below and read all the different parts of your identity in Christ. It really is amazing. We think we don't know who we are, but then, when we read the Bible, it tells us very specifically who we are. Can you imagine how different your life would be if you absolutely knew who you were, where you've come from, and where you're going? You can find those answers in the Lord. He will show you if you just spend some time with Him and ask Him. What have you got to lose? I promise you will find better answers than you have been getting from the world.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, help us to learn who we are to you. Help us to learn our true identity.  Help us to know, like Jesus did, who we are, where we came from, and where we are going. Help us turn to you for those answers. We love you, Lord. We are tired of believing the lies of the enemy. Help us to believe the truth of who we truly are. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name. Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I felt convicted as I was doing today's episode that next month's theme for mentoring will be identity. Why not start the year off knowing who we truly are and who God created us to be? Do I need to remind you that politics is show business? It's all about seeming to be the best instead of necessarily being the best. This is why politicians often say the most ridiculous things and make the most outlandish promises. It's also why they boil complex issues down to simple catchy slogans which are repeated ad nauseum until they gain their own reality. But eventually, reality catches up. Yesterday's backdown over the Fast-Track legislation is proof of that. Under the coalition's original proposal Simeon Brown, Shane Jones and Chris Bishop had the power to green-light anything, even if all advice was against it. This was all in service of the thesis that New Zealand is bogged down in red tape. A slogan hammered time and time again in the election until a significant number of electors believed that giving 3 ministers such power was without risk - and possibly good for the country. The coalition's answer was totalitarian. I was flabbergasted when I first read the policy and astounded that there was not more outrage. It was immense power in the hands of 3 men. Imagine if Michael Wood, Megan Woods, and Willie Jackson had been granted such power in the last Government. You'd be up in arms saying it was undemocratic and dictatorial. It was much more undemocratic than any co-governance plan. But we all heard silence. We'd been well trained and well indoctrinated and no one complained. Now the National-led coalition has seen sense and now the new Fast-Track legislation means a panel of experts in the field will have more say. Which looks almost the same as Labour introduced before the last election - because it is. So in other words, this Government is no more committed to fast tracking as the last lot. So then you ask yourself - what was all that about? It's all about politics, it's all about getting your vote. Meanwhile, the credit agency Fitch came out with their assessment of our credit rating and with it our economy. And despite the widely distributed idea that we're stuffed for generations - the credit agency called us an advanced and wealthy economy. Excuse me? They paid credit to macroeconomic corrections that started during Labour's reign. I beg your pardon? They said New Zealand has a long-standing commitment of fiscal prudence. This is all running against the popular mantra that the last Government left an economy in tatters. It's not in good shape but it's also not in tatters. Fitch pointed out that the real problem with New Zealand's economy is our high level of household debt and a high current account deficit. In other words, we save less than we spend and make up the difference by borrowing foreign capital. That's on you and me and the long-running housing crisis rather than any crisis in Government spending. But you know, politics. Good politics says it's all the fault of the last lot and the best Government policy is to do less. We've become wet, scared, and lacking mojo and confidence. New Zealand has pledged a 41 percent reduction from 2005 levels across all sectors of the economy. But according to government estimates, we are on track to overshoot this by 114 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e). That's more than double New Zealand's net emissions from 2021. The next government's policies will be key to determining whether or not we meet the target.  Here to debate these issues and more we're joined by Megan Woods for Labour, Simon Watts for National and James Shaw for the Greens. The Labour Party is unapologetically targeting higher income New Zealanders with its solar panel policy announced today. If elected labour will offer a cash back of up to four thousand dollars for roof top solar panel and battery systems for residential homes. The party says Aotearoa needs to boost renewable electricity by 68 percent by 2050 and solar will lower household bills by up to 50 percent and reduce reliance on the grid. But the $218 million initiative comes with terms and conditions. To be eligible; the household must have a combined income of less than 250k a year and there's also a cap on the value of eligible properties. But rentals will be eligible for the rebate. So week one of the campaign, well I call it week one because the two major parties had their launches. Of course, they've been campaigning for months, unless you are Chris Hipkins who upon receiving a poll a week or so back claimed he hadn't campaigned at all, until Megan Woods on this show busted him. He showed ironically that same trait this week when he started defending Willie Jackson, who blatantly made stuff up about Act and National and the minimum wage. Even when he corrected it, he got it wrong. Instead of being straight up and down about it, Hipkins started dancing on the head of a pin and used the word "technically". He shouldn't do that, it makes him look churlish and dishonest. It was the same trick with the vaccines. No one made you get one, technically he was right. But if you were a nurse, or ran a business where a jab was required, you didn't have to get one the same way you didn't have to have a business or a job. So not really a choice then, is it? The policy of the week was Act and their productivity work. National gets a mention for a tunnel and some EV chargers, but mainly the dumping of the ute tax. Labour get the "are you serious?" policy award for their five things to make the economy grow, as though anyone can argue with them and they should have already been in place for at least six years. And in that is part of their problem. The cold, hard truth is they really can't campaign on their record, for obvious reasons. The media get a 6/10. There is no shortage of coverage but, boy, you have to look for it. There are live streams of announcements, there is detail about the place; but there is also a predilection for the pointless. There's been coverage of protests and name calling and, from some, an obsession to see skullduggery where there isn't. The lying, the straight up and down lying, by your Andrew Little's and Willie Jackson's and Shannon Halbert's does need to be called out. It needs to stop. Chris Bishop gets Cry Baby of the Week for his faux upset over the union ads. Yes, they were low rent and, given about a quarter of union members voted for National in 2017, you might ask whether it's a good use of your subs. But it is hardly the most egregious campaign crime ever committed. Add to that a couple of polls, so we've had the numbers to chew over, and for the first week I've had a ball. The desperation isn't on show yet and no one made a major gaffe. But there's plenty of time for that yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Greenpeace is calling for caution, when it comes to the mega private green investment fund unveiled by the prime minister today. The government's partnered with a controversial investment giant Black Rock to launch a $2 billion fund to help transition Aotearoa to a 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says it's a game changer, but there was limited detail about how the fund will work and what terms and conditions they've put on the controversial multinational. Blackrock is a big investor in fossil fuels and is currently being under investigation in the US for allegedly investing in blacklisted chinese companies that are on a no go list for human rights and security reasons. Greenpeace is concerned about the heavy reliance on private investment and a lack of policy details with the announcement. He warned the level of investment needed to maintain the industry's infrastructure and enable a transition to a low-carbon economy would see a doubling of power bills within the next five years. A report from the Boston Consulting Group last year put the total cost of getting the country to 98 percent renewable electricity by 2030 at $42 billion. So is that feasible? Is the existing structure of the industry working well for customers? Do we need a separate Ministry of Energy help drive policy and regulatory settings? And could technological breakthroughs - like the creation of microgrids discussed on the programme yesterday with researcher Dr Jeremy Watson - help inject some self reliance for households when it comes to power generation?
