As a past champion of the event and a leading figure in women's golf, Stacy shares her experience of playing at Mission Hills, what the event meant for the development of women's professional golf, and her thoughts on how the LPGA tour has evolved since her rookie year in 2009. Andy and Brendan return to an old favorite format, the SGS Spotlight. The subject of this episode is the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open at Cherry Hills, won by the relatively unknown and extreme longshot, Birdie Kim, who pulled off one of the greatest shots in major championship history to clinch her only LPGA win. They set up how that historic venue played (hard) for this Women’s Open and if it’s due for another one. They discuss the trio of amateur phenoms in 15-year-old Michelle Wie, 17-year-old Morgan Pressel, and 19-year-old Brittany Lang all contending on Sunday to become the second ever amateur winners of the championship. This was also where Annika Sorenstam’s bid to win a calendar year slam came undone and Lorena Ochoa’s really started to take off. Ochoa also hit one of the worst shots you will ever see, which gets ample coverage here with citation to some humorous one-liners from Johnny Miller. They conclude with some of the larger themes on what happened to Birdie and the expectations (and burdens) that were then set for Wie, Pressel, and Lang.
Author Scott Gummer has discovered a fascinating untold story of a depression era character who shot 116 the first time he played golf and followed it up six months later with a 77 on his second round. Fascinated by golf's baffling complexity and dissatisfied by instructor's explanations, Homer Kelly had a 28 year odyssey that resulted in a book called the "Golfing Machine" published in 1969. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, calls in to start the show off talking about the Greenbrier Classic and the upcoming Open Championship from St. Andrews. Danny Lee won the Greenbrier Classic for his first win on the PGA Tour by outlasting three others and winning on the second hole in a sudden-death playoff. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship and now knows he can win on the PGA Tour. At the Greenbrier, Robert Streb putted with his wedge after damaging his putter during the final round of the tournament. Holly asks Todd about Bubba Watson, a resident at the Greenbrier Classic. Todd says that when a player wins he's mentally fatigued among many other things. Holly G asks Todd about Rory McIlroy announcing that he will miss the Open Championship due to an ankle injury he suffered while playing having a kick about with his friends. Todd feels that it is very smart of Rory to do this and give his body a chance to heal, especially after all that Tiger has tried to push through his pain and injuries. Todd said that he had injured his own ankle just by stepping off a curb while at the Dubai Championship. Jordan Spieth opted not to go to St. Andrews and scout the course for the upcoming Open Championship, but instead play the John Deere Classic. Todd says that there are a lot of birdies to be had at this course. Holly and Todd spoke about the fact that some people believe that he should be at St. Andrews scouting the course and prepare to win his third consecutive Major championship. Todd says that Spieth feels a loyalty to John Deere since they gave him a sponsor's exemption that led to a victory and launched his career. Holly and Todd also mention that Spieth is the favorite according to Vegas now that McIlroy is out. "He's not the longest off the tee ... but he has two big things that make him an elite player, there is no better clutch putter on the PGA Tour, his will, determination and heart is unmatched on the PGA Tour," said Lewis. Tony Leodora, GolfTalk Live and Golfstyles Magazine, calls in from the site of the U.S. Women's Open Championship at the Lancaster Country Club, Pa., to talk about this week's Major Championship event. Tony says that the course is a William Flynn designed golf course. Flynn has also designed other notable courses like Shinnecock Hills in Long Island and Cherry Hills in Denver. Tony said that Flynn was quarantined in the Philadelphia area for about 10 years during an outbreak of Tuberculosis. So Flynn worked in the Philadelphia area and spent some of his time designing several golf courses. As for the U.S. Women's Open this week, Tony mentioned that there have been torrential rains in the central Pennsylvania area and heavy rain was falling while he was on the phone with Holly G. Tony pointed out that 10 former women's open champs are playing in the this year's tourney as well as 10 former second place finishers like Stacy Lewis, Morgan Pressel and Suzann Pettersen. So it is sure to be an exciting week of golf. If you aren't in Lancaster for the tournament this week, you can watch it on Fox Sports and Fox Sports1, so check your local listings. Golf Digest Top 50 Coach @GaryGilchrist calls in from the #USWomensOpen in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to talk to Holly G about all things golf and his FREE Summer Golf Camp Session at the Gilchrist Golf Academy at Mission Inn Resort & Club, Howey in the Hills, Fla. Listeners can sign up on The Golf Insiders home page for the Gilchrist Golf Academy Fantastic Giveaway worth $1,850. Gilchrist coached Yani Tseng and helped he ascend to become the #1 ranked women's golfer in the World. Now one of his LPGA players he is coaching is Shanshan Feng. Gary feels that Feng is one of the most consistent ball strikers in the world. Gilchrist says that the women will have to learn how to putt the greens, especially with all the rain this week. Holly and Gary talked about the Swingclick training aid that he had a chance to test recently. I'm really impressed with the product, it's something that you can take to the range and it you don't have to put it on your club and make it heavier, but it attaches to your forearm and really helps you get your left arm in the correct position at the top of the backswing. Gary said that the Swingclick also helps you with your tempo and rhythm as well as helping you wind your body. Gary pointed out that too many golfers don't set up the correct way and Swingclick will help you with that too. From the John Deere Classic, Adam Schupak, Golfweek, calls in to wrap up the show. Holly and Adam talk about last week's win for Danny Lee and how this win might serve as a big breakthrough for him on the Tour. Danny won the U.S. Amateur Championship so young and everyone had great expectations for him. Holly and Adam also discuss Jordan Spieth honoring his commitment to play the John Deere instead of traveling over to Europe and getting acclimated to the time change and the scope of St Andrews. No one has one the first three legs of the Grand Slam on the PGA Tour since Ben Hogan did it in the 1950s. Adam said that he had been talking with former PGA Champion Lee Trevino, and Lee said that he liked to play in a tournament the week prior to a major championship so he would be able to figure out what is working and what was not. Lee didn't want to wait to get to the Major and try to figure it all out then. Holly asks Adam about Phil Mickelson's chances with all of the legal drama going on in the background. Adam mentions that Phil has played so well on links golf courses for the past couple of years. Of course Phil played terrific at Muirfield at won in 2013. Adam feels that if St. Andrews plays fast that it could work well for Phil. we really haven't seen very much from Phil lately. Since Mickelson won the Scottish Open in 2013 the week prior to winning the Open Championship the following week, Adam feels that we may find out more about Mickelson's game and his chances after this week's Scottish Open.
On the show this week, Bobby is back for an insider preview of TPC Harding Park which is just down the road from his new home and hosting the WGC Cadillac Matchplay this week. Barry & James talk about Tiger's schedule announcement of multiple events, James' new putter (with a name so long there isn't enough space to type it out), GAMEGOLF have an app for your phone and James is very impressed with his Zepp Swing Analyser. We review the events from last week on the main Tours. On The LPGA Tour, The Swinging Skirts Classic was defended by Lydia Ko defeating Morgan Pressel on the 2nd Playoff hole. On The European Tour, The VOLVO China Open was won by Wu Ashun who became the first Chinese player to win a European Tour event on Chinese soil and on The PGA Tour, The Zurich Classic of New Orleans was won in dominating style by Justin Rose, proving that he's not just a grinder, he can also shoot the lights out when required. To wrap things up, we look ahead to next week with events on The LPGA Tour - The Volunteers of America North Texas Shootout and The European Tour takes a break as the WGC Cadillac Matchplay Championships takes centre stage from TPC Harding Park in San Francisco with the best of the game taking each other on head to head.
MIKE BENDER Master Instructor, Mike Bender Golf Academy 2009 National PGA Teacher of the Year Growing up in Waterloo, Iowa, Mike Bender was an inveterate tinkerer. He would dismantle, then reassemble, radios, televisions, bicycles and anything else that could be taken apart and put back together. It was this razor sharp mechanical aptitude, an eye for detail and a passion for golf that have combined to allow this Midwestern native to become one of the top golf instructors in the world. Today, Bender can efficiently assemble a better golf swing for any golfer from rank beginners to the game's top touring professionals. This extraordinary knowledge combined with his ability to explain the necessary fundamentals in a clear and concise manner is why he is the 2009 PGA of America National Teacher of the Year, ranked among the Top 10 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest Magazine and, for more than a decade, has been included in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Teacher list. As Bender has quickly achieved worldwide recognition among his peers, the game’s top players have sought out his advice. Zach Johnson, 2007 Masters and AT&T Classic champion, has trained with Mike since Johnson was launching his professional career on the mini-tours at the beginning of the decade. LPGA tournament winners, Seon Hwa Lee and Joo Mi Kim also have been working with Mike for years. More recently, PGA Tour veterans including Skip Kendall and two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen have put their faith in Mike. All told, Bender has helped nearly two dozen PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour professionals with their games. Many of these professionals have a high comfort level with Mike because they know he has been in their shoes. Bender was a three-time NCAA All-American (1978-1980) and two-time NCAA Division III individual champion (1979-1980) before spending three seasons on the PGA Tour from 1987-89. This high level of competition inspired Mike to search out top teachers to help him with his own game. During the 1980s while he was competing, he spent significant time learning about the golf swing from Ben Doyle, Mike Adams, David Leadbetter and Mac O’Grady, all of whom have been ranked among the 50 Greatest Teachers in America by Golf Digest. It was while working with these teachers that Bender’s swing theories were refined. But having a solid understanding of the golf swing doesn’t necessarily make a teacher great. The instructor must also have a burning desire to transfer this knowledge to actual improvement in each student’s game. Mike not only wants to be able to explain how a student should make the most efficient golf swing possible, but he wants to make sure the student feels the proper swing for himself. Once the student can feel the proper motion, it becomes critical to find ways to enable the student to develop the correct motion even when the teacher isn’t watching. Bender’s revolutionary solution is called MEGSA PPE. For more than a decade Bender filled his garage designing prototypes of what was to become this breakthrough training system. The final result, which stands for Most Efficient Golf Swing Attainable Perfect Practice Equipment is now being used by more than a dozen touring professionals, including Johnson and Morgan Pressel. This comprehensive training station is located on a practice range or indoor facility and allows golfers to hit shots while avoiding the unit's adjustable bumpers which provide real-time feedback as to whether or not the club and body are in the preferred positions during the swing. Thousands of amateurs are already hooked on MEGSA PPE at select facilities around the country. While still in the early stages of the consumer roll out, Bender is working on plans to have MEGSA PPE equipped facilities throughout the world in the near future. Today, from his home base near Orlando at Timacuan Golf Club in Lake Mary, Florida, Bender continues to tinker, designing new training aids, refining MEGSA PPE and trying to understand in even more detail what traits can make a golf swing even more efficient and powerful. For Mike, it is a quest for perfection that will never be complete, it is also a quest that has already made Bender one of the finest instructors golf has ever known. Kent Brown is a golf professional whose career and interest in the game spans more than fifty years. His first coach and teacher was his father, who cut down a wooden-shafted five iron, for Kent, when he was only six. His love and passion for the game came almost immediately. Today he is often kidded by his friends as being one-dimensional. It is however, his total commitment to his sport, and his life-long desire to improve, and help others to improve, that has set him apart as one of the top teachers in the country. Even though Kent spends most of his time at junior golf tournaments, and teaching juniors, and adults alike; he has never stopped being a student of the game himself. Kent feels privileged to have had opportunities for personal interaction with many industry leaders, top instructors, and PGA Tour professionals—most notably, Ben Hogan. He currently serves on the Southern California PGA Advisory Committee. Kent played on his high school golf team before playing on scholarship at Cal State Long Beach, where he was team captain and number-one player in his junior and senior years. After instructing golf in the US Army, Kent turned professional, and joined the mini-tour ranks. He played competitive tournament golf for almost three years before accepting a position with the Ben Hogan Company in Ft Worth, Texas. It was there at the Ben Hogan Company, Kent continued his learning from the master. During his fifteen years with the Hogan Company, Kent became acquainted with tour player, and prominent golf instructor, Mac Ogrady. It was under Mac’s watchful eye that Kent developed as a professional’s professional. It was two years later, when long time friend, Dr. Tim Somerville, and Kent founded the now, world famous, Professional Golfers Career College, with campuses in Temecula, California, Orlando, Florida, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He served as Executive Director of the college for fifteen years, where he also taught Psychology of Golf, gave his students individual golf lessons, and taught them how to teach the game to others. After selling his interest in PGCC in 2005, Kent accepted a position with the International Junior Golf Tour as the West Coast Director. In this role, he continues to teach and motivate the next generation of young players. Mission StatementGolfer Girl Magazine will help to grow the community of female golfers by providing a magazine that is informative, educational, interesting, and wholesome. The content will be inspirational to help girls find inspiration from success of others and educational to learn about golf's history and famous women golfers. The Hooton sisters -Libby 17 years old -Courtney 15 years old and Chloe Belle 12 years, old began- playing golf in 1999 and have been avid players since they started. They love the game and all of its challenges.Every summer, they live and breathe golf and particularly enjoy the wonderful community of friends that they have developed. They love to read about the game, the players, and most of all, the fashions. Unfortunately, there are no known publications that are tailored to the junior audience.Twenty-five percent of all golfers are women. However, through 2003, only 13 percent to 16 percent of junior golfers were girls source: National Golf Foundation . This is an audience that had been underserved by the traditional golf marketers. Until now.Beginning in 2002, younger girl golfers began to have a big impact on the golfing market. Perhaps the biggest movement began when a young Hawaiian resident, Michelle Wie, began playing competitively in adult tournaments at the age of 12. Many have estimated that Wie will have the biggest influence on women s golf ever seen. However, there are also a number of other very young golfers making their mark on professional golf. In 2005, Paula Creamer was the second-highest ranked woman golfer by the time she was 18. Morgan Pressel just missed winning the 2005 women s U.S. Open while still a junior in high school. Many ofthe LPGA tour s top players are in their early twenties.Learn more at www.golfergirlmagazine.comMike & Billy also play GTR "Fore Play" golf trivia where the winner receives a $500 golf package courtesy of the Avila La Fonda Hotel, Inn at Avila Beach, Avila Beach Golf Resort and Blacklake Golf Resorts located in beautiful Avila Beach, California.
