Some people would balk at that because Attica really is a restaurant known for its cooking, but the service is what carries it. It's what the great memories are built on. It's the human interactions,” Ben Shewry on The Restaurant Guys Podcast 2024BioFrom a childhood in New Zealand with some early experience at The Roxborough, Shewry moved to Australia and then America to further cement his skill set in the fundamentals of exquisite cookery. He has a passion for respectfully utilizing the foods unique to Australia and New Zealand. Our first guests formed a partnership that's brewing up some fun in Roxborough; Sweet Java Cafe's owner, Victor Young, and Sales Manager for Mermaid Spirits, Joe Berendsohn joined me to chat about the newly-opened cafe & cocktails spot. This is Victor's first time opening up a coffeehouse, and thanks to a mutual friend of theirs, a partnership was formed with Mermaid Spirits. And what was the result? A large space where the community can grab a cup of their favorite coffee on the way to work, or even work remotely inside of while also enjoying some of the scratch-made pastries. And when it's a little later in the day--be sure to try out one of the coffee-infused cocktails or other mixed drinks and enjoy the fun vibes of the space and neighborhood! https://order.toasttab.com/online/sweet-java-cafeKeeping caffeinated is top priority for most individuals, so we spoke with co-owner Luisa Toro from Roosters Coffeehouse which is located in Ledgewood, NJ. Roosters Coffeehouse is also the first cafe business that Luisa and her family have opened, and they take pride in offering the highest-quality ingredients and experiences for everyone who visits. And it truly is a family business; Luisa's father learned the techniques on how to properly roast every bean from where it was sourced. The rest of the family have roles in the business as well, and take joy in offering menu items not commonly seen--but very much enjoyed--by all who visit. So, if you're looking for a pick-me-up along with an empanada or Pandebono (cheese bread) then Roosters Coffeehouse should be your next destination! https://www.roosterscoffeehouse.comLastly, we sat down with Fearless Restaurant Group's Director of Hotel and Restaurants in NJ, Pete Palladino. Pete joined me to discuss all the fun, new, and relaxing aspects regarding Daddy O's Hotel and Restaurant located in Brant Beach, NJ, along with Tucker's Tavern in Beach Haven, NJ. The vibes include decor reminiscent of the 50's and 60's era, with multiple bars including a rooftop bar at both Daddy O's and Tucker's Tavern, and plenty of freshly caught seafood and unique cocktails. Look for their popular Bends & Brunch program on the weekend, the newly renovated rooms to stay & play at the shore, along with two new beers that were brewed for them as a collab from ManaFirkin Brewing Co. There's always something new, exciting, and delicious at Daddy O and Tuckers Tavern--so be shore to check them out! https://www.fearlessrestaurants.com/restaurants
The second episode in our new season finds us in conversation with Mark Roxborough from the Maiden City Garrison Fife and Lambeg Drumming Club. There is a rich historical tradition surrounding fife and Lambeg drumming in Northern Ireland and a tradition that more and more people are starting to reconnect with. Mark talks us through how the Garrison started and some of the events that they have been involved in and the benefits that has brought to personal lives and also the wider community. With the rich tradition of flute bands throughout the country this is another means for community musicians to connect with their culture and ensure that it doesn't die out. A big thank you to Mark for taking the time to share and the whole team at New Gate Arts and Culture Centre for allowing us to use the premises to record the episode. Join us next week when we speak to Lisa Williamson.

This is Part 3 of the Series "What's It Like Living In Philadelphia? Living in Philly Part 3. Question: Is Philadelphia the most dangerous city in the US? many people believe that it is based on the conversations we had with many of them which is featured on this episode. (Actually, another city recently became the most dangerous city.) We also explored city residents' perspectives on the upcoming US Mid-term Elections, the issue of gun violence, fatherhood, and the best parts of Philly. The respondents were quite revealing and provided an insight into the mood and temperature of the city after several shootings that has left many of their loved ones dead while others in some parts are experiencing tranquility and country. It is as if there is two Philadelphias, where the experience of living in Philadelphia differs compared to where you are and how closely affected one is to the issues. Nevertheless, there is still this city wide concern about the issues and many have opinions about how we can effect change. One gentleman said that it is stressing in Philadelphia in light of the recent violence perpetrated by young people and that "Philly needs a Father's Movement." Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom leads off the Dom Giordano Program by offering an update centered on the horrific shooting in Roxborough last week targeting high school football players that left one dead, telling of the repeat offenses by the lead suspect in the case. Then, Giordano swings back into a conversation about the upcoming midterm elections, playing back a clip from Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who suggested that education will continue to be a huge issue for voters in the election. Then, Dom welcomes Pastor Phillip Fisher onto the Dom Giordano Program after the Pastor invited Dr. Mehmet Oz to see the horrific situation in Kensington, the drug epicenter of Philadelphia. Pastor Fisher tells about the situation he's seeing play out on the streets of Philadelphia, explaining a point he made with the Senate candidate about baby formula being harder to find in Philadelphia than Fentanyl, the substance killing tons of drug users. Pastor Fisher explains why he invited the Doctor to Kensington, telling that he met the candidate first when Dr. Oz spent a day talking to people suffering from addiction in the neighborhood, explaining that he knew then that Dr. Oz was a man of God who puts his profession and humanitarianism over politics. In 1914, Elsie Roxborough was born into a wealthy, Black family in Detroit. But when she died in 1939, her death certificate listed her as white. Her life was rich, curious and at times, troubled, all while attempting a sort of high-wire-act of living multiple lives, between cities and names and races. Today, we talk about her life, death, and everything in between. GUEST: Ken Coleman, writer and reporter ---- Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Right this way. Fashion is so much more than glamor and celebrities. It showcases your personality and attitude in life. In this episode, Char Roxborough discusses the influence of fashion and styling in changing people's lives. As a mother and a successful fashion stylist, Char gives advice not only about fashion but also about career.
Isabella Augusta Persse was born in 1852 at Roxborough, near Kilchreest, South Co Galway. From a young age she had an interest in literature. Meeting a young William Butler Yeats in the 1890s was a turning point for both of them and they became lifelong friends and collaborators.
Jesse grew up in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia. Upon discovering HC punk, he fully immersed himself in the mid-/late-'80s scene. He founded Philly Zine and moved to a squat at 51st and Baltimore in West Philly. By the late '80s he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he sang for acclaimed (and often chaotic) bands such as Blatz, The Gr'ups, The Criminals, and The Frisk. He was an elected member of the Berkeley Rent Board, he's run a record label, and much, much more! Too much to cover in one episode, that's for sure! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adultingwell/support
